लेना as self-directed or completive vector

As a vector, लेना follows a bare lexical stem and presents the event as completed, secured, or brought under the agent's control: पढ़ लिया, सीख लिया, नोट कर लिया. It often suggests that the result matters to the doer—something is finished for one's own purposes, incorporated into one's resources, or taken care of before moving on.

This “self-directed” center is a tendency, not a claim that every subject acts selfishly or receives a concrete object. In दरवाज़ा बंद कर लिया, the agent secures a closed state; nothing is literally “taken.” The overall compound pattern is introduced under compound verbs: lexical stem plus vector.

Bare stem + inflected लेना

The lexical verb remains bare, while लेना carries tense, mood, and agreement.

Lexical eventCompoundFrequent profile
पढ़- “read”पढ़ लियाreading completed
सीख- “learn”सीख लियाknowledge acquired
नोट कर- “note”नोट कर लियाinformation secured for later use
बंद कर- “close”बंद कर लियाclosed state brought under control

मैंने नया रास्ता सीख लिया।

maĩne nayā rāstā sīkh liyā.

I learned the new route.

सारा ने नंबर नोट कर लिया।

sārā ne nambar noṭ kar liyā.

Sara noted down the number for later.

हमने बारिश से पहले खिड़कियाँ बंद कर लीं।

hamne bāriś se pahle khiṛkiyā̃ band kar līṃ.

We closed the windows before the rain.

The compound uses सीख लिया, not सीखा लिया. The latter can receive a causative sense in other contexts. Keeping the lexical stem bare is part of the construction, not optional stylistic shortening.

💡
Vector लेना does not mean that the agent literally takes something. Ask whether the event's result is secured, completed, or made relevant to the agent.

Simple verb versus secured completion

A simple perfective reports a bounded event. लेना additionally makes the endpoint or its usefulness salient.

नादिया ने निर्देश पढ़े।

nādiyā ne nirdeś paṛhe.

Nadia read the instructions.

नादिया ने निर्देश पढ़ लिए।

nādiyā ne nirdeś paṛh lie.

Nadia finished reading the instructions.

The minimal pair holds the reader and text constant. पढ़े is a neutral fact. पढ़ लिए suggests that the reading task has been completed and its result is now available to Nadia.

मैंने बैठक से पहले खाना खाया।

maĩne baiṭhak se pahle khānā khāyā.

I ate before the meeting.

मैंने बैठक से पहले खाना खा लिया।

maĩne baiṭhak se pahle khānā khā liyā.

I made sure to eat before the meeting.

The second often suggests practical foresight: the speaker took care of eating before becoming busy. English may use only intonation or got X done to express this relevance.

Agent benefit, control, and convenience

लेना is common when the action prepares, protects, or equips the agent.

निकलने से पहले टिकट डाउनलोड कर लो।

nikalne se pahle ṭikaṭ ḍāunloḍ kar lo.

Download the ticket before leaving. (informal; secure it for use)

थक गए हो तो थोड़ी देर आराम कर लो।

thak gae ho to thoṛī der ārām kar lo.

If you're tired, rest for a while. (informal)

ज़रूरत हो तो मेरी छतरी ले लो।

zarūrat ho to merī chatrī le lo.

If you need it, take my umbrella. (informal)

The last example contains lexical लेना: छतरी is literally taken, and no preceding verb stem occurs. The first two contain vector लेना after कर-. Structure, not English translation alone, tells the uses apart.

Agent orientation is not limited to physical benefit. A speaker may secure understanding:

पहले नियम अच्छी तरह समझ लो।

pahle niyam acchī tarah samajh lo.

First make sure you understand the rules. (informal)

The result “rules understood” is brought into the addressee's control before the next step.

लेना and देना contrast in viewpoint, not in rigid pronoun roles

The same lexical event can be profiled differently:

यह फ़ॉर्म भर लो और अपने पास रखो।

yah form bhar lo aur apne pās rakho.

Fill out this form and keep it with you. (informal)

यह फ़ॉर्म भर दो और काउंटर पर जमा कर दो।

yah form bhar do aur kāuṇṭar par jamā kar do.

Fill out this form and submit it at the counter. (informal)

भर लो profiles securing the completed form for the addressee; भर दो points toward making the completed form available for submission. Context creates the contrast. It would be too crude to teach लेना = for oneself and देना = for another as exceptionless equations.

मेरे लिए भी एक सीट बुक कर लो।

mere lie bhī ek sīṭ buk kar lo.

Book a seat for me too. (informal)

Here लेना occurs even though another person benefits. The addressee is asked to take responsibility for securing the booking. Participant orientation is pragmatic, not a fixed beneficiary argument.

💡
Use the लेना–देना contrast as a prediction, then check actual usage. लेना often keeps the result within the agent's sphere; देना often releases it outward, but lexical convention and context can override a simple beneficiary chart.

Tense, habit, mood, and commands appear on लेना

The vector can carry many inflections; it is not a past-tense marker.

मैं रास्ते में दवा खरीद लूँगी।

maĩ rāste meṃ davā xarīd lū̃gī.

I'll buy the medicine on the way. (female speaker; take care of the task)

वह यात्रा से पहले नक़्शा डाउनलोड कर लेता है।

vah yātrā se pahle naqśā ḍāunloḍ kar letā hai.

He downloads the map before a trip.

कृपया अपना नाम लिख लीजिए।

kripyā apnā nām likh lījie.

Please write down your name. (respectful)

Future लूँगी, habitual लेता है, and respectful imperative लीजिए retain the completive or preparatory profile. Respect comes from लीजिए and the address situation, not from vector लेना itself.

Agreement and ergativity

In an active transitive perfective compound, the agent normally takes ने. An unmarked object can control agreement on लेना.

अंजलि ने दोनों किताबें खरीद लीं।

añjali ne donoṃ kitābeṃ xarīd līṃ.

Anjali bought both books.

अंजलि ने दोनों किताबें खरीद ली हैं।

añjali ne donoṃ kitābeṃ xarīd lī haiṃ.

Anjali has bought both books.

Feminine plural किताबें produces standalone लीं but ली हैं with a following auxiliary. A को-marked object cannot control agreement:

अंजलि ने रोहन को बुला लिया।

añjali ne rohan ko bulā liyā.

Anjali called Rohan over.

The compound is default masculine singular बुला लिया. It does not agree with feminine ergative अंजलि ने or marked masculine रोहन को.

An intransitive compound agrees with its unmarked subject:

बच्चियाँ जल्दी सो गईं।

bacciyā̃ jaldī so gaīṃ.

The girls went to sleep early.

This example uses vector जाना, not लेना, and shows why agreement belongs to the full predicate rather than to a memorized vector ending.

Negation: no endpoint, denied endpoint, or apprehension

Neutral negation often uses a simple verb:

मैंने आज अख़बार नहीं पढ़ा।

maĩne āj axbār nahīṃ paṛhā.

I didn't read the newspaper today.

If the speaker denies or questions the specifically completive result, लेना can remain:

मैंने सारी मिठाई खा नहीं ली; कुछ मेहमानों के लिए बची है।

maĩne sārī miṭhāī khā nahīṃ lī; kuch mehmānoṃ ke lie bacī hai.

I didn't eat all the sweets; some are left for the guests.

तुमने सारे पैसे खर्च तो नहीं कर लिए?

tumne sāre paise xarc to nahīṃ kar lie?

You didn't go and spend all the money, did you? (informal, apprehensive)

The second question combines तो नहीं with कर लिए to express concern about an attained result. Compound verbs are less frequent under plain negation, not ungrammatical there.

Lexical compatibility matters

लेना combines readily with controlled, telic actions such as reading through, memorizing, buying, noting, deciding, or completing a practical task. It is less natural when no controllable result can be secured. Do not attach it automatically to every verb merely to mean “completely.”

उसने जवाब सोच लिया।

usne javāb soc liyā.

He or she worked out the answer.

This conventional compound profiles reaching and securing a decision. But a state such as “know” normally uses जानना, not an invented vector compound intended to mean “finish knowing.” These restrictions are partly arbitrary and must be learned from usage.

A short dialogue: getting tasks under control

क्या तुमने यात्रा का बीमा देखा?

kyā tumne yātrā kā bīmā dekhā?

Did you look at the travel insurance? (informal)

हाँ, शर्तें पढ़ ली हैं और योजना भी चुन ली है।

hā̃, śarteṃ paṛh lī haiṃ aur yojnā bhī cun lī hai.

Yes, I've read the conditions and chosen a plan.

ठीक है, अब उसकी रसीद डाउनलोड कर लो।

ṭhīk hai, ab uskī rasīd ḍāunloḍ kar lo.

All right, now download its receipt. (informal)

The initial simple verb neutrally asks whether the topic was examined. The reply uses पढ़ ली/चुन ली because two decisions are settled. The final कर लो assigns one more task whose result the addressee should secure. In a formal interaction, the same instruction would use कर लीजिए.

Common Mistakes

❌ उसने पूरा लेख पढ़ा लिया।

Incorrect for ‘finished reading’ — पढ़ा लिया can be causative; the vector construction needs bare पढ़-.

✅ उसने पूरा लेख पढ़ लिया।

usne pūrā lekh paṛh liyā.

He or she finished reading the whole article.

❌ जया ने दोनों किताबें खरीद लिया।

Incorrect — unmarked feminine plural किताबें controls the vector.

✅ जया ने दोनों किताबें खरीद लीं।

jayā ne donoṃ kitābeṃ xarīd līṃ.

Jaya bought both books.

❌ मीरा ने अमित को बुला ली।

Incorrect — अमित को is marked and cannot control agreement; default लिया is required.

✅ मीरा ने अमित को बुला लिया।

mīrā ne amit ko bulā liyā.

Meera called Amit over.

❌ मैं आवेदन भर लूँगा हूँ।

Incorrect — future लूँगा already closes the finite predicate; do not add हूँ.

✅ मैं आवेदन आज ही भर लूँगा।

maĩ āvedan āj hī bhar lū̃gā.

I'll finish filling out the application today. (male speaker)

❌ कृपया अपना नाम लिख लिया।

Incorrect as a respectful instruction — लिया reports a completed event instead of requesting one.

✅ कृपया यहाँ अपना पूरा नाम लिख लीजिए।

kripyā yahā̃ apnā pūrā nām likh lījie.

Please write your full name here. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

Vector लेना presents a result as completed, secured, or brought into the agent's sphere. It often marks practical preparation or agent relevance, but it neither literally means “take” nor guarantees that only the subject benefits. The lexical stem stays bare, लेना carries inflection, and perfective compounds obey ordinary ने, object-agreement, and default-agreement rules. Under negation, the vector remains when its attained result is specifically denied, questioned, or feared.
