छोड़ना as cessation or abandonment

Hindi छोड़ना covers release, departure, abandonment, and cessation: नौकरी छोड़ना “leave a job,” काम अधूरा छोड़ना “leave work unfinished,” and धूम्रपान करना छोड़ना “stop smoking.” Completed abandonment very often appears as छोड़ देना, where lexical stem छोड़- combines with vector देना to make the separation or cessation a salient result.

This topic sits at the edge of the ordinary bare-stem vector system. In the productive cessation pattern, the activity appears as a direct infinitival complement before छोड़ना; छोड़ना is not merely attached to a bare event stem. Recognizing that structural difference prevents many errors.

Leaving or abandoning a noun

With a noun phrase, lexical छोड़ना means leave, release, give up, or abandon. The simple perfective is possible, while छोड़ देना makes the resulting separation or finality more prominent.

नैना ने पुरानी नौकरी छोड़ी।

nainā ne purānī naukrī choṛī.

Naina left her old job.

नैना ने पुरानी नौकरी छोड़ दी।

nainā ne purānī naukrī choṛ dī.

Naina gave up her old job for good.

This minimal pair holds the job and departure constant. छोड़ी neutrally records the event. छोड़ दी profiles the separation as settled and consequential. Vector देना does not literally mean that the job was handed to a recipient.

कूरियर ने पैकेट दरवाज़े के पास छोड़ दिया।

kūriyar ne paikeṭ darvāze ke pās choṛ diyā.

The courier left the package by the door.

टीम ने मुश्किल आते ही परियोजना अधूरी छोड़ दी।

ṭīm ne muśkil āte hī pariyojnā adhūrī choṛ dī.

The team abandoned the project unfinished as soon as difficulties arose.

In the first, the package remains at a location. In the second, अधूरी describes the state in which feminine परियोजना is abandoned. The common semantic core is separation from the agent's continuing control or effort.

💡
In छोड़ दिया, छोड़- supplies the lexical meaning “leave/release/abandon,” while दिया profiles a decisive resulting separation. This is not an example of छोड़ना serving as the final vector.

Stopping an activity: infinitive plus छोड़ना

To stop or quit doing something, Hindi places the activity-denoting infinitive directly before छोड़ना:

activity in -ना + छोड़ना / छोड़ देना

आदित्य ने रात को कॉफ़ी पीना छोड़ दिया है।

āditya ne rāt ko kofī pīnā choṛ diyā hai.

Aditya has stopped drinking coffee at night.

बारिश शुरू हुई तो मज़दूरों ने बाहर काम करना छोड़ दिया।

bāriś śurū huī to mazdūroṃ ne bāhar kām karnā choṛ diyā.

When it started raining, the workers stopped working outside.

The first cessation can be a lasting change of habit; the second can be the endpoint of one ongoing episode. छोड़ देना itself does not specify whether the cessation is permanent. Time expressions, aspect, and the nature of the activity supply that interpretation.

The infinitive is a direct activity complement, so it appears in the direct -ना form—not automatically in oblique -ने:

उसने हर बात पर बहस करना छोड़ दिया।

usne har bāt par bahas karnā choṛ diyā.

He or she stopped arguing about everything.

The whole activity हर बात पर बहस करना is what was abandoned. English uses an -ing form after stop; Hindi uses its own nominal infinitive and keeps normal SOV order.

💡
Do not learn “English gerund = Hindi -ना” as a universal equation. Here करना works because the entire activity is the object of छोड़ना. Other Hindi predicates select different infinitival cases or postpositions.

Cessation versus pausing for another purpose

English stop doing and stop to do differ, and Hindi makes the distinction with entirely different structures.

रवि ने गाड़ी चलाना छोड़ दिया।

ravi ne gāṛī calānā choṛ diyā.

Ravi stopped driving / gave up driving.

रवि ने फ़ोन करने के लिए गाड़ी रोकी।

ravi ne fon karne ke lie gāṛī rokī.

Ravi stopped the car in order to make a phone call.

In the first, driving is the activity terminated. In the second, फ़ोन करने के लिए is the purpose of stopping the car; Ravi may resume driving afterward. Hindi does not use छोड़ना merely because English happens to contain stop.

Agreement and ergativity

Both simple perfective छोड़ना and compound छोड़ देना are transitive. The agent normally takes ने, and an eligible unmarked object controls agreement.

मीरा ने दोनों अंशकालिक नौकरियाँ छोड़ दीं।

mīrā ne donoṃ aṃśkālik naukriyā̃ choṛ dīṃ.

Meera quit both part-time jobs.

Feminine plural नौकरियाँ controls standalone दीं. Before an auxiliary, the vector appears as दी and plural हैं/थीं carries number.

मीरा ने उस संस्था को छोड़ दिया है।

mīrā ne us saṃsthā ko choṛ diyā hai.

Meera has left that organization.

Marked संस्था को cannot control agreement, so दिया is default masculine singular even though both the agent and referential object are feminine.

In cessation predicates, the infinitival activity behaves as a masculine singular nominal complement for agreement purposes:

उसने देर रात संदेश भेजना छोड़ दिया।

usne der rāt sandeś bhejnā choṛ diyā.

He or she stopped sending messages late at night.

The vector is default-looking masculine singular दिया; it does not agree with plural संदेश, which is embedded inside the activity phrase संदेश भेजना.

Negation has two important readings

Negating छोड़ना can mean that cessation did not happen—therefore the activity continued:

दबाव के बावजूद उसने अभ्यास करना नहीं छोड़ा।

dabāv ke bāvajūd usne abhyās karnā nahīṃ choṛā.

Despite the pressure, he or she did not stop practising.

It can also deny a feared decisive abandonment:

मैंने नौकरी छोड़ नहीं दी; सिर्फ़ दो हफ़्ते की छुट्टी ली है।

maĩne naukrī choṛ nahīṃ dī; sirf do hafte kī chuṭṭī lī hai.

I haven't quit my job; I've only taken two weeks off.

The first uses simple नहीं छोड़ा to say an activity continued. The second retains छोड़ दी because the speaker specifically rejects the result “job definitively given up.” This is the same discourse principle explored under compound verbs under negation.

Resolute कर छोड़ना is a different, restricted pattern

Traditional descriptions also list bare-stem compounds such as कर छोड़ना. In contemporary educated Hindi, this is much less productive than लेना, देना, जाना, or डालना and often sounds (literary) or rhetorically determined. Crucially, it does not mean “stop doing.” It presents an act as irreversibly or resolutely carried through.

Modern speech more often uses the expanded frame करके ही छोड़ना:

वह सच्चाई साबित करके ही छोड़ेगी।

vah saccāī sābit karke hī choṛegī.

She will not rest until she has proved the truth.

The literal pieces do not map one-to-one onto English. ही and the “do and only then leave off” frame create determined commitment. Learners should recognize compact कर छोड़ना in elevated prose, but should not generate it freely as a general cessation marker.

छोड़ना is not the permission verb

English leave and let overlap historically, but modern Hindi uses oblique infinitive + देना for permission: मुझे जाने दो “let me go.” छोड़ना means release only when an actual participant or object is being released: मेरा हाथ छोड़ो “let go of my hand.”

मेरा हाथ छोड़ दो; मुझे जाने दो।

merā hāth choṛ do; mujhe jāne do.

Let go of my hand; let me go. (familiar)

The first छोड़ दो releases a physical object, the hand. The second जाने दो licenses the action of going. Treating both English uses of let as छोड़ना produces unnatural Hindi.

Register and a short dialogue

छोड़ना/छोड़ देना is neutral across everyday speech and ordinary writing. त्याग देना is (formal) or elevated and often suggests principled renunciation rather than an everyday decision to quit.

क्या तुमने कॉफ़ी पीना पूरी तरह छोड़ दिया?

kyā tumne kofī pīnā pūrī tarah choṛ diyā?

Have you stopped drinking coffee completely? (informal)

पूरी तरह नहीं; मैंने सिर्फ़ शाम की कॉफ़ी छोड़ी है।

pūrī tarah nahīṃ; maĩne sirf śām kī kofī choṛī hai.

Not completely; I've only given up my evening coffee.

अच्छा किया—अब शायद नींद बेहतर आएगी।

acchā kiyā—ab śāyad nīnd behtar āegī.

Good decision—perhaps you'll sleep better now. (informal)

The question uses छोड़ दिया to test a completed change of habit. The answer chooses simple छोड़ी है because it narrows the abandoned item to one specific serving. The vector is a viewpoint choice, not an obligatory translation of quit.

💡
When choosing between छोड़ा and छोड़ दिया, ask whether you are neutrally identifying what was left or foregrounding the settled separation. Neither form by itself guarantees permanence.

Common Mistakes

1. Using the oblique infinitive without a postposition

❌ उसने देर रात चाय पीने छोड़ दिया।

Incorrect — the activity is a direct complement here, so use पीना, not oblique पीने.

✅ उसने देर रात चाय पीना छोड़ दिया।

usne der rāt cāy pīnā choṛ diyā.

He or she stopped drinking tea late at night.

2. Copying English postverbal order

❌ उसने छोड़ दिया धूम्रपान करना।

Incorrect in neutral Hindi — the activity complement precedes छोड़ दिया.

✅ उसने धूम्रपान करना छोड़ दिया।

usne dhūmrapān karnā choṛ diyā.

He or she stopped smoking.

3. Ignoring agreement with an unmarked noun

❌ आरती ने अपनी नौकरी छोड़ दिया।

Incorrect — feminine नौकरी controls दी.

✅ आरती ने अपनी नौकरी छोड़ दी।

ārtī ne apnī naukrī choṛ dī.

Aarti quit her job.

4. Using छोड़ना for permission

❌ मुझे बोलना छोड़ो।

Incorrect for 'let me speak' — छोड़ना expresses cessation or release, not permission for an action.

✅ मुझे बोलने दो।

mujhe bolne do.

Let me speak. (familiar)

5. Confusing “stop doing” with “stop in order to do”

❌ मैं सिगरेट पीना छोड़ दिया।

Incorrect for 'I stopped in order to smoke'—and the perfective subject would also require मैंने.

✅ मैं सिगरेट पीने के लिए रास्ते में रुक गया।

maĩ sigreṭ pīne ke lie rāste meṃ ruk gayā.

I stopped on the way in order to smoke. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • A noun before छोड़ना names what is left, released, or abandoned; छोड़ देना makes the resulting separation salient.
  • To stop doing an activity, use a direct -ना infinitival activity complement: काम करना छोड़ देना.
  • Simple छोड़ा and compound छोड़ दिया differ in viewpoint, not in a rigid temporary-versus-permanent opposition.
  • Perfective forms keep normal ने, object marking, and agreement; an embedded activity infinitive does not pass its internal object's features to the vector.
  • Restricted resolutive कर छोड़ना/करके ही छोड़ना means determined completion, not cessation, and should not be generalized freely.
