Contemporary Hindi productively combines an established English loan base with करना: फ़ोन करना, डाउनलोड करना, चेक करना, बुक करना, सेव करना, and ईमेल करना. The loan contributes the specialized action, while करना carries Hindi tense, aspect, mood, negation, and agreement. This is not unfinished or automatically “mixed” grammar; many such predicates are the ordinary vocabulary of work, travel, media, and digital life.
Productive does not mean unrestricted. Communities conventionalize particular bases, pronunciations, spellings, and alternatives. फ़ाइल डाउनलोड करना is established, but a learner cannot take any English verb, preserve English inflection, and append करना.
The English base stays fixed; करना inflects
The loan element normally does not change for Hindi person, tense, or aspect. The verbal material appears on करना and its auxiliaries.
| Function | Hindi form |
|---|---|
| habitual | ईमेल चेक करता है |
| progressive | फ़ाइल डाउनलोड कर रही है |
| perfective | कमरा बुक किया |
| future | लिंक शेयर करेंगे |
| imperative | पासवर्ड सेव मत करना |
अदिति दफ़्तर पहुँचते ही अपना ईमेल चेक करती है।
aditi daftar pahũcte hī apnā īmel cek kartī hai.
Aditi checks her email as soon as she reaches the office.
मैं अभी नया वीडियो डाउनलोड कर रहा हूँ।
maĩ abhī nayā vīḍiyo ḍāunloḍ kar rahā hū̃.
I'm downloading the new video right now.
The loan base डाउनलोड stays unchanged; the Hindi verbal morphology begins at कर रहा हूँ.
Hindi word order remains Hindi
Objects and most complements precede the loan + करना predicate. English download the report becomes रिपोर्ट डाउनलोड करना, not a verb-first sequence.
क्या तुम आज रात की ट्रेन के टिकट बुक कर सकते हो?
kyā tum āj rāt kī ṭren ke ṭikaṭ buk kar sakte ho?
Can you book the train tickets for tonight? (informal)
कृपया हस्ताक्षर करने से पहले पूरा दस्तावेज़ स्कैन कीजिए।
kripyā hastākṣar karne se pahle pūrā dastāvez skain kījie.
Please scan the entire document before signing it. (respectful)
Focus and afterthought can change surface order in real conversation, but learners should not copy English verb–object order as their neutral template. Hindi information structure still operates around a clause-final predicate.
Perfective ने and object agreement
An English-loan + करना predicate is normally transitive when it has an object. In a canonical perfective clause, the agent takes ने. An unmarked direct object can control the perfective form of करना:
तारा ने ज़रूरी फ़ाइल डाउनलोड की।
tārā ne zarūrī fāil ḍāunloḍ kī.
Tara downloaded the necessary file.
सहायक ने सभी तस्वीरें स्कैन कीं।
sahāyak ne sabhī tasvīreṃ skain kīṃ.
The assistant scanned all the pictures.
हमने सम्मेलन के लिए तीन कमरे बुक किए।
hamne sammelan ke lie tīn kamre buk kie.
We booked three rooms for the conference.
The agreement targets are feminine singular फ़ाइल, feminine plural तस्वीरें, and masculine plural कमरे. The loan base does not itself receive agreement.
When the object is को-marked, it cannot control the perfective; masculine singular किया is the normal default:
मैंने रीना को कल ही मैसेज किया।
maĩne rīnā ko kal hī maisej kiyā.
I messaged Reena just yesterday.
Some colloquial varieties and highly code-mixed speech extend default किया even where edited Standard Hindi prefers object agreement. Learners writing Standard Hindi should use फ़ाइल डाउनलोड की and तस्वीरें स्कैन कीं. Variation should be recognized, not turned into a false claim that agreement is absent.
करना versus होना
Loan bases also participate in an agentive/nonagentive alternation. करना introduces the person or system causing the action; होना presents a process or resulting state without profiling that agent.
मैंने दोनों फ़ाइलें अपलोड कीं।
maĩne donoṃ fāileṃ aploḍ kīṃ.
I uploaded both files.
धीमे इंटरनेट के कारण दूसरी फ़ाइल अपलोड नहीं हुई।
dhīme iṇṭarneṭ ke kāraṇ dūsrī fāil aploḍ nahīṃ huī.
Because of the slow internet connection, the second file did not upload.
The second is not a word-for-word English passive. It construes the upload as a process that failed to reach completion. Feminine फ़ाइल controls हुई.
रात में फ़ोन अपने-आप अपडेट हो गया।
rāt meṃ fon apne-āp apḍeṭ ho gayā.
The phone updated automatically during the night.
हो गया foregrounds the attained updated state. A deliberate causer would instead be expressed with किसी ने फ़ोन अपडेट किया.
Aspect and boundedness
Many digital predicates have a natural endpoint: a file becomes downloaded, a seat becomes booked, or a message becomes sent. Progressive aspect views the process before that endpoint; perfective aspect presents it as bounded.
वीडियो डाउनलोड हो रहा था कि बिजली चली गई।
vīḍiyo ḍāunloḍ ho rahā thā ki bijlī calī gaī.
The video was downloading when the power went out.
मैंने नक़्शा डाउनलोड किया, लेकिन अभी खोला नहीं है।
maĩne naqśā ḍāunloḍ kiyā, lekin abhī kholā nahīṃ hai.
I downloaded the map, but I haven't opened it yet.
The second sentence reports one completed event and denies a different subsequent event. Hindi does not require a vector merely because the action has an endpoint.
Adding vectors to a loan predicate
A vector follows bare कर-, not the loan directly:
मैंने स्टेशन का नक़्शा फ़ोन में सेव कर लिया।
maĩne sṭeśan kā naqśā fon meṃ sev kar liyā.
I saved the station map on my phone for my own use.
समीरा ने संशोधित रिपोर्ट सबको ईमेल कर दी।
samīrā ne saṃśodhit riporṭ sabko īmel kar dī.
Sameera emailed the revised report to everyone.
Compare रिपोर्ट ईमेल की with रिपोर्ट ईमेल कर दी. The simple form reports the action; कर दी presents the report as sent outward and the task as completed. Similarly, सेव कर लिया profiles a result secured for the agent. These vectors contribute direction, affectedness, and boundedness rather than literal giving or taking.
इस पेज को बुकमार्क कर रखना; कल फिर देखेंगे।
is pej ko bukmārk kar rakhnā; kal phir dekheṅge.
Keep this page bookmarked; we'll look at it again tomorrow. (informal)
Here रखना presents a maintained result. It cannot be replaced indiscriminately by देना merely because both can follow कर-.
Negation and prohibition
Plain negation normally stays with the करना predicate. A retained vector is appropriate when its result is specifically at issue.
हमने अभी वापसी के टिकट बुक नहीं किए हैं।
hamne abhī vāpsī ke ṭikaṭ buk nahīṃ kie haiṃ.
We haven't booked the return tickets yet.
जाँच किए बिना यह ड्राफ़्ट शेयर मत कर देना।
jā̃c kie binā yah ḍrāfṭ śeyar mat kar denā.
Don't go and share this draft without checking it. (informal warning)
The first neutrally denies booking. The second retains देना because accidental outward release is the feared result.
Register and durable alternatives
Loan predicates have different social distributions. For the larger distinction between established loans, momentary code-switches, and deliberately hybrid styles, see English code-switching and Hinglish.
- फ़ोन करना is neutral across most spoken contexts; artificial दूरभाष करना is not its everyday replacement.
- चेक करना is neutral in conversation; जाँच करना suits neutral edited and formal prose.
- बुक करना is ordinary in travel and hospitality; आरक्षित करना is (formal) and common in official notices.
- प्लान करना is (informal) to neutral in speech; योजना बनाना is usual in edited formal prose.
- प्रिंट करना is neutral technical vocabulary; मुद्रित करना refers especially to formal printing or publication.
Do not label every English loan vulgar, careless, or youth-only. Conversely, do not fill a formal government notice with conversational loans when an established institutional term serves the audience better.
A dialogue: ordinary digital Hindi
क्या तुमने प्रस्तुति की आख़िरी स्लाइड अपडेट कर दी?
kyā tumne prastuti kī āxirī slāiḍ apḍeṭ kar dī?
Did you update the last slide of the presentation? (informal)
हाँ, अपडेट करके फ़ाइल टीम को ईमेल भी कर दी है।
hā̃, apḍeṭ karke fāil ṭīm ko īmel bhī kar dī hai.
Yes, after updating it, I've also emailed the file to the team.
अच्छा, सार्वजनिक लिंक अभी शेयर मत करना।
acchā, sārvajanik liṅk abhī śeyar mat karnā.
Good; don't share the public link yet. (informal)
The speakers combine a formal-domain noun प्रस्तुति, an English loan स्लाइड, and ordinary Hindi morphology without switching grammatical systems. The contrast between कर दी and plain negative imperative मत करना reflects result focus, not different levels of correctness.
Common Mistakes
1. Inflecting the English base
❌ मैंने फ़ाइल डाउनलोडेड की।
Incorrect — the established base डाउनलोड stays fixed; Hindi inflection appears on करना.
✅ मैंने फ़ाइल डाउनलोड की।
maĩne fāil ḍāunloḍ kī.
I downloaded the file.
2. Omitting करना in a finite progressive
❌ वह टिकट बुक रहा है।
Incorrect — the progressive attaches to कर-, not directly to बुक.
✅ वह अगले हफ़्ते के टिकट बुक कर रहा है।
vah agle hafte ke ṭikaṭ buk kar rahā hai.
He is booking the tickets for next week.
3. Copying English predicate order
❌ मैंने डाउनलोड की रिपोर्ट।
Marked as an afterthought, not the neutral order expected for 'I downloaded the report.'
✅ मैंने रिपोर्ट डाउनलोड की।
maĩne riporṭ ḍāunloḍ kī.
I downloaded the report.
4. Ignoring object agreement in edited Standard Hindi
❌ नेहा ने नई तस्वीर सेव किया।
Nonstandard in edited Hindi — unmarked feminine तस्वीर controls की.
✅ नेहा ने नई तस्वीर सेव की।
nehā ne naī tasvīr sev kī.
Neha saved the new picture.
5. Omitting कर before a vector
❌ उसे रिपोर्ट ईमेल दी।
Incorrect for the loan predicate with a resultative vector — bare कर- must link the loan to देना.
✅ उसे रिपोर्ट ईमेल कर दी।
use riporṭ īmel kar dī.
I emailed the report to him or her.
Key Takeaways
- The conventional English loan supplies lexical content, while करना carries Hindi verbal grammar.
- Hindi object-before-predicate order, ने, को, and agreement remain fully active.
- Agentive करना contrasts with nonagentive होना: फ़ाइल अपलोड की versus फ़ाइल अपलोड हुई.
- Vectors follow bare कर- and add result, direction, affectedness, or maintained-state meaning.
- English loans range from neutral technical vocabulary to informal choices; select alternatives by domain and register, not by a blanket purity rule.
