ते हुए simultaneous action

The conventional Hindi adverbial verb stem + -ते हुए presents one situation as simultaneous with another: घर लौटते हुए मैंने दूध खरीदा “while returning home, I bought milk.” It is a non-finite frame: लौटते हुए supplies overlap and circumstance, while finite खरीदा supplies tense and clause-level agreement.

Neutral adverbial -ते हुए is conventionally invariant, even with a feminine singular subject. Hindi also has grammatical agreeing -ता हुआ/-ती हुई/-ते हुए depictives and noun modifiers. Thus रीना गाते हुए लौटी and रीना गाती हुई लौटी are both possible, but their structure and information packaging differ.

The broader agreement contrast is introduced on agreement inside participial modifiers.

Building the neutral adverbial

Attach imperfective -ते and invariant हुए to the verb stem:

InfinitiveAdverbial formTypical meaning
चलनाचलते हुएwhile walking
करनाकरते हुएwhile doing
होनाहोते हुएwhile being / despite being
लेनालेते हुएwhile taking
देनादेते हुएwhile giving

अनु बस की ओर दौड़ते हुए अपना टिकट ढूँढ़ रही थी।

anu bas kī or dauṛte hue apnā ṭikaṭ ḍhū̃ṛh rahī thī.

Anu was looking for her ticket while running toward the bus.

मैंने सीढ़ियाँ उतरते हुए उसे संदेश भेजा।

maĩne sīṛhiyā̃ utarte hue use sandeś bhejā.

I sent him or her a message while walking down the stairs.

Feminine अनु does not change neutral adverbial दौड़ते हुए. Ergative मैंने can control उतरते हुए; the controller need not be an unmarked nominative.

💡
In the neutral “while doing” frame, learn -ते हुए as a unit. Do not infer feminine or singular agreement merely from the subject; agreement signals a different participial analysis.

Overlap, not an independent tense

The adverbial event overlaps the reference time established by the finite predicate:

कल दफ़्तर जाते हुए मुझे एक पुराना दोस्त मिला।

kal daftar jāte hue mujhe ek purānā dost milā.

Yesterday, while going to the office, I ran into an old friend.

कल प्रदर्शनी देखते हुए हम हर चित्र पर चर्चा करेंगे।

kal pradarśanī dekhte hue ham har citra par carcā kareṅge.

Tomorrow, while viewing the exhibition, we will discuss every picture.

The same जाते/देखते हुए morphology occurs with a past encounter and a future discussion. It marks internal overlap, not present tense.

The two events need not have exactly equal duration. Finding the friend occupies one point within the longer journey; discussing individual pictures recurs during the viewing interval. Context supplies the precise temporal geometry.

Manner and attendant circumstance

Simultaneity often develops into a manner reading:

वह धीमे स्वर में बोलते हुए नोट्स देख रहा था।

vah dhīme svar meṃ bolte hue noṭs dekh rahā thā.

He was looking at his notes while speaking softly.

बच्चे गाना गाते हुए स्कूल से घर लौटे।

bacce gānā gāte hue skūl se ghar lauṭe.

The children returned home from school singing a song.

The singing and speaking provide the manner or accompanying scene. English may use an -ing adjunct, but Hindi explicitly chooses the imperfective viewpoint -ते and a shared controller.

With भी, the construction can be concessive rather than simply temporal:

जोखिम जानते हुए भी उसने प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर लिया।

jokhim jānte hue bhī usne prastāv svīkār kar liyā.

Even though he or she knew the risk, he or she accepted the proposal.

Knowledge overlaps the decision, but भी adds “despite that.” This extension is common in neutral and formal Hindi.

Neutral adverbial versus agreeing depictive

Compare two grammatical sentences:

रिया हँसते हुए भीतर आई।

riyā hãste hue bhītar āī.

Riya came inside while laughing.

रिया हँसती हुई भीतर आई।

riyā hãstī huī bhītar āī.

Riya came inside, laughing.

Invariant हँसते हुए frames the manner/circumstance of coming. Agreeing हँसती हुई depicts Riya as a temporarily laughing participant. The real-world scene may be nearly identical; the grammar chooses whether the secondary event is oriented toward the clause or toward the participant.

An agreeing phrase before a noun is attributive:

हँसती हुई बच्ची ने अपनी माँ को आवाज़ दी।

hãstī huī baccī ne apnī mā̃ ko āvāz dī.

The laughing girl called out to her mother.

Feminine बच्ची controls both हँसती and हुई. This is not the invariant adverbial frame.

💡
Do not label रिया हँसती हुई आई ungrammatical. It is an agreeing depictive. The real error is a hybrid such as हँसती हुए, which combines feminine -ती with invariant/masculine-oblique हुए.

Subject control and dangling readings

The unexpressed subject of neutral -ते हुए normally matches the semantic subject or experiencer of the matrix predicate:

तेज़ चलते हुए मुझे साँस फूलने लगी।

tez calte hue mujhe sā̃s phūlne lagī.

I began to feel short of breath while walking quickly.

Dative मुझे is the walker and experiencer. A truly different subject requires an explicit finite or nominalized clause:

जब आरव खाना बना रहा था, तब मीरा मेहमानों से बात कर रही थी।

jab ārav khānā banā rahā thā, tab mīrā mehmānoṃ se bāt kar rahī thī.

While Aarav was cooking, Meera was talking to the guests.

Compressing this to खाना बनाते हुए मीरा... would normally make Meera the cook. Hindi shares English's concern about dangling -ing clauses, but its dative and ergative controllers mean that “same subject” cannot be reduced to surface nominative case.

-ते हुए versus -कर/-करके

दरवाज़ा खोलते हुए नील के हाथ से चाबी गिर गई।

darvāzā kholte hue nīl ke hāth se cābī gir gaī.

While opening the door, Neel dropped the key.

दरवाज़ा खोलकर नील कमरे में चला गया।

darvāzā kholkar nīl kamre meṃ calā gayā.

After opening the door, Neel went into the room.

खोलते हुए keeps the opening in progress when the key falls. खोलकर packages it as completed or enabling before entry. With manner verbs the contrast can be less sharply sequential, but -ते हुए always favors an internal, overlapping view.

A compressed written sentence and its expansion

प्रस्ताव पर विचार करते हुए समिति ने बजट से जुड़े जोखिमों को ध्यान में रखा।

prastāv par vicār karte hue samiti ne bajaṭ se juṛe jokhimoṃ ko dhyān meṃ rakhā.

While considering the proposal, the committee took the budget-related risks into account. (formal)

Expanded into finite clauses:

समिति प्रस्ताव पर विचार कर रही थी। उसी दौरान उसने बजट से जुड़े जोखिमों को भी ध्यान में रखा।

samiti prastāv par vicār kar rahī thī. usī daurān usne bajaṭ se juṛe jokhimoṃ ko bhī dhyān meṃ rakhā.

The committee was considering the proposal. During that process, it also took the budget-related risks into account. (formal)

The compressed version makes consideration the frame and risk assessment the main assertion. The expansion gives each proposition its own TAM and makes the overlap explicit.

Common Mistakes

1. Mixing invariant and agreeing morphology

❌ नेहा गाती हुए बरामदे में आई।

Incorrect hybrid — choose invariant गाते हुए or agreeing गाती हुई.

✅ नेहा गाते हुए बरामदे में आई।

nehā gāte hue barāmde meṃ āī.

Neha came onto the veranda singing.

2. Leaving a finite auxiliary inside the adverbial

❌ काम करते हैं हुए वह फ़ोन सुन रहा था।

Incorrect — the non-finite frame is करते हुए, without हैं.

✅ काम करते हुए वह रेडियो सुन रहा था।

kām karte hue vah reḍiyo sun rahā thā.

He was listening to the radio while working.

3. Leaving the secondary subject dangling

❌ सड़क पर चलते हुए बारिश शुरू हो गई।

Unclear — बारिश cannot be the understood walker.

✅ जब हम सड़क पर चल रहे थे, तब बारिश शुरू हो गई।

jab ham saṛak par cal rahe the, tab bāriś śurū ho gaī.

While we were walking along the road, it began to rain.

4. Using simultaneity for completed priority

❌ खाना खाते हुए वह बर्तन धोने लगा।

Wrong for 'after eating'—this says dishwashing began while the meal was still in progress.

✅ खाना खाकर वह बर्तन धोने लगा।

khānā khākar vah bartan dhone lagā.

After eating, he began washing the dishes.

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral adverbial -ते हुए is conventionally invariant and presents overlap, manner, or attendant circumstance.
  • TAM comes from the finite predicate; the non-finite phrase can occur in past, present, or future settings.
  • Agreeing -ता हुआ/-ती हुई/-ते हुए depictives are also grammatical and orient the description toward a participant.
  • The neutral adverbial normally shares the matrix semantic controller, including ergative and dative controllers.
  • Use -ते हुए for an open overlapping view and -कर/-करके when the first event is packaged as completed, enabling, or culminating.
