ते ही immediate succession

Hindi verb stem + ते ही means “as soon as,” “the moment,” or “immediately upon”: घर पहुँचते ही फ़ोन करना “call as soon as you get home.” The -ते form presents a boundary or trigger, and focus particle ही says that the following event occurs right at that contextually relevant point.

Unlike -कर/-करके, -ते ही can readily frame an event with a different, explicitly expressed subject: मेरे पहुँचते ही बैठक शुरू हुई “the meeting began as soon as I arrived.” It is therefore best analyzed as a compact temporal subordinate construction, not simply another same-subject converb.

For the looser “after” relation, compare के बाद sequence.

Form and invariability

Infinitiveते ही formMeaning
करनाकरते हीas soon as one does
आनाआते हीas soon as one comes
देखनादेखते हीon seeing
होनाहोते हीas soon as it happens/becomes
पता चलनापता चलते हीas soon as it becomes known

The form is conventionally -ते ही regardless of the first event's subject gender and number:

रीना घर पहुँचते ही सो गई।

rīnā ghar pahũcte hī so gaī.

Reena fell asleep as soon as she got home.

बच्चे छुट्टी की घंटी बजते ही बाहर भागे।

bacce chuṭṭī kī ghaṇṭī bajte hī bāhar bhāge.

The children ran outside as soon as the dismissal bell rang.

Feminine रीना does not produce पहुँचती ही. The bell and the children are different subjects, but घंटी बजते ही explicitly supplies the trigger event.

💡
Treat -ते ही as a fixed temporal frame. Its -ते does not agree like an attributive participle, and ही is essential to the immediate-trigger meaning.

Same subject: one participant crosses a boundary

When no separate subject is expressed, the matrix participant normally controls the -ते ही event:

मैंने ईमेल खोलते ही गलती पहचान ली।

maĩne īmel kholte hī galtī pahcān lī.

I spotted the error as soon as I opened the email.

आरव ने ख़बर सुनते ही अपनी बहन को फ़ोन किया।

ārav ne xabar sunte hī apnī bahan ko fon kiyā.

Aarav called his sister as soon as he heard the news.

The opening and recognizing share मैंने; hearing and calling share आरव ने. The entire chain is located in the past by the finite predicate, not by -ते ही itself.

The first event need not be a long completed activity. With perception verbs, the salient boundary is often onset: देखते ही पहचानना means recognition occurs on sight. With a telic motion verb such as पहुँचना, the trigger is naturally arrival at the endpoint.

Different subject: name the trigger's participant

A genitive-marked subject can identify a participant different from the matrix subject:

मेरे स्टेशन पहुँचते ही ट्रेन चल पड़ी।

mere sṭeśan pahũcte hī ṭren cal paṛī.

The train started moving as soon as I reached the station.

रीना के बोलते ही पूरा कमरा शांत हो गया।

rīnā ke bolte hī pūrā kamrā śānt ho gayā.

The whole room fell silent as soon as Reena began to speak.

मेरे/रीना के belongs to the temporal clause; ट्रेन/कमरा belongs to the matrix clause. English simply uses nominative I/Reena, so learners must not copy that case directly.

In conventional event expressions, an inanimate subject often appears without an overt genitive marker:

बारिश शुरू होते ही दुकानदारों ने सामान अंदर रख लिया।

bāriś śurū hote hī dukāndāroṃ ne sāmān andar rakh liyā.

As soon as it began to rain, the shopkeepers moved their goods inside.

बारिश शुरू होना forms a recognizable event unit. A full finite alternative removes any structural compression: जैसे ही बारिश शुरू हुई, दुकानदारों ने....

Immediate means contextually immediate

ही presents the second event as following at the first relevant opportunity, not necessarily within a measurable fraction of a second.

आवेदन मिलते ही हम उसकी प्रारंभिक जाँच शुरू करेंगे।

āvedan milte hī ham uskī prārambhik jā̃c śurū kareṅge.

We will begin the preliminary review as soon as we receive the application. (formal)

An institution may need a normal processing moment before work begins; the sentence promises no avoidable intervening stage. This pragmatic immediacy is why -ते ही is common in assurances, instructions, and narratives.

कमरे की बत्ती बुझते ही बच्चा रोने लगा।

kamre kī battī bujhte hī baccā rone lagā.

The child began to cry the moment the room light went out.

Here the transition is perceived as virtually instantaneous. Lexical and real-world context sharpen the interval.

-ते ही versus -ते हुए

घर लौटते हुए मैंने सब्ज़ियाँ खरीदीं।

ghar lauṭte hue maĩne sabziyā̃ kharīdīṃ.

While returning home, I bought vegetables.

घर लौटते ही मैंने चाय बना ली।

ghar lauṭte hī maĩne cāy banā lī.

As soon as I got home, I made tea.

लौटते हुए opens an interval within the journey. लौटते ही selects its contextually relevant boundary—here completion of the return—and places tea-making immediately afterward. English on returning can obscure this distinction, so check whether the events overlap or form a trigger sequence.

-ते ही versus -कर ही

Particle placement changes the focus:

घर पहुँचते ही उसने मुझे फ़ोन किया।

ghar pahũcte hī usne mujhe fon kiyā.

He or she called me as soon as they got home.

घर पहुँचकर ही उसने मुझे फ़ोन किया।

ghar pahũckar hī usne mujhe fon kiyā.

He or she called me only after getting home.

The first emphasizes immediacy. The second makes arrival a necessary prerequisite or correct point for calling; a delay after arrival is still compatible. ही scopes over a different unit in each construction.

💡
Use this diagnostic: V-ते ही answers “how soon?”; V-कर ही often answers “only after/by what means?” They may describe the same order but do not make the same claim.

Finite expansion with जैसे ही

घंटी बजते ही कर्मचारी इमारत से बाहर निकले।

ghaṇṭī bajte hī karmacārī imārat se bāhar nikle.

As soon as the alarm rang, the employees left the building.

जैसे ही घंटी बजी, कर्मचारी इमारत से बाहर निकल गए।

jaise hī ghaṇṭī bajī, karmacārī imārat se bāhar nikal gae.

As soon as the alarm rang, the employees left the building.

The finite जैसे ही clause overtly agrees with feminine घंटी and can carry its own TAM. The compact बजते ही phrase is invariant and backgrounds the alarm as a trigger.

A compressed written sentence and its expansion

अनियमितता का पता चलते ही विभाग ने भुगतान रोक दिया।

aniyamittā kā patā calte hī vibhāg ne bhugtān rok diyā.

The department stopped the payment as soon as the irregularity was discovered. (formal)

Expanded:

जैसे ही विभाग को अनियमितता का पता चला, उसने भुगतान रोक दिया।

jaise hī vibhāg ko aniyamittā kā patā calā, usne bhugtān rok diyā.

As soon as the department discovered the irregularity, it stopped the payment. (formal)

The compressed version foregrounds the administrative response. The finite expansion overtly identifies the department as experiencer of the discovery and agent of the decision.

Common Mistakes

1. Making -ते agree with a feminine subject

❌ सीमा के आती ही बैठक शुरू हुई।

Incorrect — the immediate temporal frame is invariant आते ही.

✅ सीमा के आते ही बैठक शुरू हुई।

sīmā ke āte hī baiṭhak śurū huī.

The meeting began as soon as Seema arrived.

2. Copying an English nominative into the genitive subject slot

❌ मैं पहुँचते ही ट्रेन चल पड़ी।

Incorrect for two different subjects — use मेरे to mark 'my arriving.'

✅ मेरे पहुँचते ही ट्रेन चल पड़ी।

mere pahũcte hī ṭren cal paṛī.

The train pulled away as soon as I arrived.

3. Using a finite perfective directly before ही

❌ घंटी बजी ही छात्र बाहर निकले।

Incorrect for an 'as soon as' clause — use बजते ही or जैसे ही घंटी बजी.

✅ घंटी बजते ही छात्र बाहर निकले।

ghaṇṭī bajte hī chātra bāhar nikle.

The students went outside as soon as the bell rang.

4. Confusing immediacy with an exclusive prerequisite

❌ घर पहुँचकर ही मुझे संदेश भेजना।

Wrong for 'message me immediately on arrival'—पहुँचकर ही means only after reaching, not necessarily at once.

✅ घर पहुँचते ही मुझे संदेश भेजना।

ghar pahũcte hī mujhe sandeś bhejnā.

Send me a message as soon as you get home. (familiar)

Key Takeaways

  • V-ते ही marks a contextually immediate trigger and is invariant for gender and number.
  • Its time is relative to the finite clause; the same form works in past and future contexts.
  • It can share the matrix controller or host a distinct subject, often genitive मेरे/उसके/रीना के.
  • -ते हुए marks overlap, while -ते ही selects a boundary; -कर ही usually emphasizes an exclusive prerequisite rather than speed.
  • A finite जैसे ही clause is clearer when the trigger needs independent TAM, agreement, or elaboration.
