से पहले precedence

The compound expression से पहले se pahle places something earlier than a reference point: बैठक से पहले baiṭhak se pahle “before the meeting,” मुझसे पहले mujhse pahle “before me,” निकलने से पहले nikalne se pahle “before leaving.” It can order events in time or people and items in a sequence.

Hindi builds this relation with से, not the के found in के बाद “after.” The complement precedes the expression and stands in the oblique case.

The variant के पहले ke pahle is also established, and its frequency varies across speakers and regions. It is not an error. This page teaches से पहले as the neutral default; formal prose may additionally use से पूर्व se pūrv (formal).

Earlier than a time or event

बैठक से पहले मुझे ये आँकड़े भेज दीजिए।

baiṭhak se pahle mujhe ye ā̃kṛe bhej dījie.

Please send me these figures before the meeting.

हम सूरज निकलने से पहले घर से निकल गए।

ham sūraj nikalne se pahle ghar se nikal gae.

We left home before sunrise.

The first से belongs to से पहले and marks the reference event. In the second sentence, the later घर से independently marks the place of departure. Identical से forms can perform different relational jobs.

💡
Ask “earlier than what?” Put that reference point first in the oblique, then add se pahle.

Noun complements are oblique

Direct formPrecedence phrase
लड़का laṛkāलड़के से पहले laṛke se pahle
बच्चे bacceबच्चों से पहले baccoṃ se pahle
कक्षा kakṣāकक्षा से पहले kakṣā se pahle
छुट्टियाँ chuṭṭiyā̃छुट्टियों से पहले chuṭṭiyoṃ se pahle

नए लड़के से पहले दो और उम्मीदवार आए थे।

nae laṛke se pahle do aur ummīdvār āe the.

Two other candidates had arrived before the new boy.

Direct नया लड़का becomes oblique नए लड़के. This sentence compares arrival order, not physical position.

छुट्टियों से पहले सभी रिपोर्टें जमा करनी होंगी।

chuṭṭiyoṃ se pahle sabhī riporṭeṃ jamā karnī hoṅgī.

All the reports will have to be submitted before the holidays.

Plural छुट्टियाँ becomes oblique छुट्टियों before से.

Pronouns use से forms

Pronouns follow the ordinary से pattern: मुझसे पहले, हमसे पहले, तुमसे पहले, आपसे पहले, इससे/उससे पहले, and इनसे/उनसे पहले. Neutral Standard Hindi uses मुझसे पहले, not मैं से पहले. मेरे से पहले occurs (regional/informal) but is not the neutral form taught here.

वह मुझसे पहले दफ़्तर पहुँच गया था।

vah mujhse pahle daftar pahũc gayā thā.

He had reached the office before me.

इससे पहले हमने ऐसा नियम कभी नहीं देखा था।

isse pahle hamne aisā niyam kabhī nahīṃ dekhā thā.

Before this, we had never seen such a rule.

इससे पहले is a common discourse connector meaning “before this / previously.” उससे पहले points to an earlier time relative to something already mentioned.

Events expressed by infinitives

An action serving as the reference event appears as an oblique infinitive in -ने followed by से पहले.

सोने से पहले दरवाज़ा बंद कर लेना।

sone se pahle darvāzā band kar lenā.

Lock the door before going to sleep. (informal instruction)

फ़ॉर्म जमा करने से पहले सारी जानकारी जाँच लीजिए।

form jamā karne se pahle sārī jānkārī jā̃c lījie.

Please check all the information before submitting the form.

The oblique -ने is licensed by the following postposition. It is not agent marker ने and it does not indicate past time.

If the embedded event has an overt subject, that subject normally appears in a genitive form:

मेरे पहुँचने से पहले मेहमान जा चुके थे।

mere pahũcne se pahle mehmān jā cuke the.

The guests had left before I arrived.

मेरे is the subject of पहुँचना inside the nominalized event. The whole expression मेरे पहुँचने is then the complement of से पहले.

💡
For an event, first change -nā to oblique -ne, then add se pahle: jāne se pahle. An overt embedded subject normally takes genitive form: mere jāne se pahle.

Bare पहले and पहले...फिर

Without a complement, पहले means “earlier,” “beforehand,” or “first.” The pairing पहले ... फिर ... orders two actions.

पहले टिकट ले लो, फिर प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर जाना।

pahle ṭikaṭ le lo, phir pleṭform par jānā.

First get the ticket, then go to the platform. (informal instruction)

मैं यहाँ पहले भी आ चुका हूँ।

maĩ yahā̃ pahle bhī ā cukā hū̃.

I've been here before too. (male speaker)

Do not add से unless an explicit comparison or reference point follows it.

से पहले, तक, and के बाद

These expressions locate an event differently around a boundary:

PhraseBoundary relationCan the event occur at six?
छह बजे से पहले chah baje se pahlestrictly before sixno
छह बजे तक chah baje takby/up to sixyes, under the “by” reading
छह बजे के बाद chah baje ke bādlater than sixno

कृपया छह बजे से पहले आ जाइए; छह बजे के बाद दरवाज़ा बंद हो जाएगा।

kripyā chah baje se pahle ā jāie; chah baje ke bād darvāzā band ho jāegā.

Please arrive before six; after six the door will be locked.

तक would allow arrival at the deadline itself; से पहले excludes the boundary.

Ordered and figurative precedence

The reference point need not be a clock time. से पहले can order names, turns, or priorities.

सूची में मेरा नाम आपके नाम से पहले है।

sūcī meṃ merā nām āpke nām se pahle hai.

My name comes before yours on the list.

वह अपनी प्राथमिकताओं में परिवार को काम से पहले रखती है।

vah apnī prāthamikatāoṃ meṃ parivār ko kām se pahle rakhtī hai.

In her priorities, she puts family before work.

The second use is figurative priority. It extends the same ordering schema rather than locating the family physically.

A finite-clause extension

The grammaticalized frame इससे पहले कि isse pahle ki introduces a finite clause meaning “before...”. It is useful when two clauses have independently expressed subjects or when a finite mood is natural.

इससे पहले कि देर हो जाए, हमें निकलना चाहिए।

isse pahle ki der ho jāe, hameṃ nikalnā cāhie.

Before it gets late, we should leave.

This page focuses on postpositional complements; the full clause pattern belongs on the before and after clauses page.

Productive precedence versus lexical English “before”

Temporal and ranking uses are productive. English before can also mean “in the presence of” in legal or formal language. “Appear before the court” is अदालत के सामने पेश होना adālat ke sāmne peś honā, not अदालत से पहले.

गवाह कल अदालत के सामने पेश होगा।

gavāh kal adālat ke sāmne peś hogā.

The witness will appear before the court tomorrow. (formal/legal)

The English word is the same, but the Hindi relation is presence in front of an institution, not temporal precedence.

A natural exchange

हमें कब पहुँचना है? — नौ बजे से पहले; उसके बाद प्रवेश नहीं मिलेगा।

hameṃ kab pahũcnā hai? — nau baje se pahle; uske bād praveś nahīṃ milegā.

When do we need to arrive? — Before nine; after that, entry won't be allowed.

The reply pairs neutral से पहले with its asymmetric counterpart के बाद.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting से with an explicit reference point

❌ बैठक पहले मुझे फ़ोन करना।

Incorrect for 'before the meeting': the reference point requires बैठक से पहले.

✅ बैठक से पहले मुझे फ़ोन करना।

baiṭhak se pahle mujhe fon karnā.

Call me before the meeting. (informal instruction)

2. Leaving a masculine -आ noun direct

❌ लड़का से पहले कौन आया?

Incorrect: लड़का becomes oblique लड़के before से.

✅ लड़के से पहले कौन आया?

laṛke se pahle kaun āyā?

Who came before the boy?

3. Using a citation-form pronoun

❌ वह मैं से पहले पहुँच गया।

Incorrect in neutral Standard Hindi: use मुझसे पहले.

✅ वह मुझसे पहले पहुँच गया।

vah mujhse pahle pahũc gayā.

He arrived before me.

4. Leaving an infinitive in -ना

❌ बाहर जाना से पहले बत्ती बंद करो।

Incorrect: the infinitive becomes oblique जाने before से.

✅ बाहर जाने से पहले बत्ती बंद करो।

bāhar jāne se pahle battī band karo.

Turn off the light before going out. (informal)

5. Confusing “before” with a deadline including the boundary

❌ फ़ॉर्म शुक्रवार से पहले जमा करें।

Incorrect if Friday itself is included in the deadline; से पहले excludes Friday.

✅ फ़ॉर्म शुक्रवार तक जमा करें।

form śukravār tak jamā kareṃ.

Submit the form by Friday. (formal instruction)

Key Takeaways

  • से पहले means earlier than a time, event, person, or item in an order.
  • Nouns are oblique; pronouns use मुझसे पहले, उससे पहले, and related से forms.
  • Event complements use oblique infinitive -ने: करने से पहले.
  • से पहले excludes the boundary, whereas deadline तक can include it.
  • Hindi uses के बाद for “after,” so the two sides of the contrast are structurally asymmetric.
