The compound postposition के बाद ke bād places something later than a reference point: बैठक के बाद baiṭhak ke bād “after the meeting,” मेरे बाद mere bād “after me,” काम करने के बाद kām karne ke bād “after doing the work.” The relation is usually temporal, but it also orders people or items in a sequence.
The complement comes before the fixed unit and stands in the oblique case. English after comes first, so the word order and the case form both require attention.
A later event or time
बैठक के बाद हम सीधे घर जाएँगे।
baiṭhak ke bād ham sīdhe ghar jāẽge.
After the meeting, we'll go straight home.
रात के दस बजे के बाद दरवाज़ा बंद रहता है।
rāt ke das baje ke bād darvāzā band rahtā hai.
The door remains locked after ten at night.
के बाद establishes sequence only. It does not claim that the first event caused the second. If the meeting ends and rain starts, बैठक के बाद बारिश हुई reports timing, not causation.
Noun complements are oblique
| Direct form | Sequence phrase |
|---|---|
| लड़का laṛkā | लड़के के बाद laṛke ke bād |
| बच्चे bacce | बच्चों के बाद baccoṃ ke bād |
| कार्यक्रम kāryakram | कार्यक्रम के बाद kāryakram ke bād |
| छुट्टियाँ chuṭṭiyā̃ | छुट्टियों के बाद chuṭṭiyoṃ ke bād |
लड़के के बाद उसकी छोटी बहन ने कविता सुनाई।
laṛke ke bād uskī choṭī bahan ne kavitā sunāī.
After the boy, his younger sister recited a poem.
This is ordering in a program rather than elapsed time. Direct लड़का becomes oblique लड़के.
गर्मी की छुट्टियों के बाद स्कूल फिर खुलेंगे।
garmī kī chuṭṭiyoṃ ke bād skūl phir khuleṅge.
The schools will reopen after the summer holidays.
The plural छुट्टियाँ becomes छुट्टियों. The compound postposition marks the boundary after which the reopening occurs.
Pronoun forms
Use मेरे बाद, हमारे बाद, तुम्हारे बाद, आपके बाद, इसके/उसके बाद, and इनके/उनके बाद. Interrogative किसके बाद asks for the preceding reference point.
मेरे बाद आप बोलेंगे, फिर सवाल लिए जाएँगे।
mere bād āp boleṅge, phir savāl lie jāẽge.
You will speak after me, and then questions will be taken. (respectful)
इसके बाद हमें क्या करना है?
iske bād hameṃ kyā karnā hai?
What do we have to do after this?
इसके बाद often functions as a discourse connector meaning “after this / next.” It still contains the same pronoun-based compound postposition.
Events expressed by infinitives
To make an action the reference event, use an oblique infinitive in -ने before के बाद: खाना → खाने के बाद, काम करना → काम करने के बाद, पहुँचना → पहुँचने के बाद.
खाना खाने के बाद दवा ले लेना।
khānā khāne ke bād davā le lenā.
Take the medicine after eating. (informal instruction)
घर पहुँचने के बाद मुझे संदेश भेज देना।
ghar pahũcne ke bād mujhe sandeś bhej denā.
Send me a message after you get home. (informal)
The -ने ending is the infinitive's oblique form, not perfective agent marker ने. The subject of the understood event is normally recovered from context.
When that subject must be explicit, it appears in a genitive form:
मेरे पहुँचने के बाद ही बैठक शुरू हुई।
mere pahũcne ke bād hī baiṭhak śurū huī.
The meeting started only after I arrived.
मेरे is the subject of the nominalized event पहुँचना, while the whole event phrase is the complement of के बाद.
के बाद, बाद में, and duration + बाद
These similar expressions have different structures:
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| X के बाद | after a named reference point | कक्षा के बाद kakṣā ke bād |
| बाद में | later / afterwards | बाद में बात करेंगे bād meṃ bāt kareṅge |
| duration + बाद | that much time later | दो घंटे बाद do ghaṇṭe bād |
अभी समय नहीं है; इस बारे में बाद में बात करेंगे।
abhī samay nahīṃ hai; is bāre meṃ bād meṃ bāt kareṅge.
There isn't time now; we'll talk about this later.
ट्रेन दो घंटे बाद आई।
ṭren do ghaṇṭe bād āī.
The train arrived two hours later.
In दो घंटे बाद, the duration measures the distance forward from a contextually understood point. दो घंटों के बाद is also possible when the interval is construed as a bounded period after which something happens, but the compact direct-number phrase is extremely common.
Temporal after versus spatial behind
के बाद orders events and items. Physical “behind” is normally के पीछे ke pīche. A person can be मेरे बाद in a speaking order but मेरे पीछे in a queue or spatial arrangement.
सूची में नेहा मेरे बाद है, लेकिन लाइन में वह मेरे पीछे नहीं है।
sūcī meṃ nehā mere bād hai, lekin lāin meṃ vah mere pīche nahīṃ hai.
Neha comes after me on the list, but she isn't behind me in the line.
The distinction is conceptual order versus physical orientation, though a queue can be described as an order when that is what matters.
Contrast with से पहले
Hindi's paired expressions are structurally asymmetric: “after X” is X के बाद, while “before X” is normally X से पहले. The complementary pattern is developed on the से पहले precedence page.
कक्षा से पहले पुस्तकालय खुलता है और कक्षा के बाद बंद होता है।
kakṣā se pahle pustakālay khultā hai aur kakṣā ke bād band hotā hai.
The library opens before class and closes after class.
Do not mechanically make both halves use के or both use से.
Productive sequence versus lexical English “after”
Temporal and ordered uses are productive. English phrasal or idiomatic after does not necessarily contain this relation in Hindi. “Look after the children” means बच्चों की देखभाल करना, not बच्चों के बाद देखना. “Name a child after someone” also requires a separate naming construction.
आज शाम मैं बच्चों की देखभाल करूँगा।
āj śām maĩ baccoṃ kī dekhbhāl karū̃gā.
I'll look after the children this evening. (male speaker)
The English string is no guide; choose के बाद only for sequence.
A natural exchange
तुम दफ़्तर से कब निकलोगे? — बैठक के बाद; शायद छह बजे के आसपास।
tum daftar se kab nikloge? — baiṭhak ke bād; śāyad chah baje ke āspās.
When will you leave the office? — After the meeting; probably around six. (informal)
The short answer is a complete time phrase. के बाद supplies the relation without repeating the verb.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting “after” before its complement
❌ के बाद बैठक हम निकलेंगे।
Incorrect: the reference point precedes के बाद.
✅ बैठक के बाद हम निकलेंगे।
baiṭhak ke bād ham nikleṅge.
We'll leave after the meeting.
2. Leaving a masculine -आ noun direct
❌ लड़का के बाद रीना बोलेगी।
Incorrect: लड़का becomes oblique लड़के.
✅ लड़के के बाद रीना बोलेगी।
laṛke ke bād rīnā bolegī.
Reena will speak after the boy.
3. Using a citation-form pronoun
❌ मैं के बाद कौन है?
Incorrect: use मेरे बाद.
✅ मेरे बाद कौन है?
mere bād kaun hai?
Who is after me?
4. Leaving an infinitive in -ना
❌ खाना खाना के बाद दवा लो।
Incorrect: the event infinitive must be oblique खाने.
✅ खाना खाने के बाद दवा लो।
khānā khāne ke bād davā lo.
Take the medicine after eating. (informal)
5. Translating idiomatic English “look after” literally
❌ वह आज बच्चों के बाद देखेगी।
Incorrect: के बाद expresses sequence, not caretaking.
✅ वह आज बच्चों की देखभाल करेगी।
vah āj baccoṃ kī dekhbhāl karegī.
She will look after the children today.
