Both के बीच ke bīc and में meṃ can translate English among. के बीच foregrounds an intervening space, a relationship, or a position in the midst of multiple reference points. में presents someone or something as a member of, or located within, a larger set or domain.
Compare दो घरों के बीच एक गली है “there is a lane between two houses” with इन घरों में एक खाली है “among these houses, one is vacant.” The first constructs a relation among reference points; the second selects or locates within a set.
Literal space between reference points
With two or more landmarks, के बीच identifies the space that separates or is bounded by them.
दो इमारतों के बीच एक सँकरी गली है।
do imāratoṃ ke bīc ek sãkarī galī hai.
There is a narrow lane between the two buildings.
सोफ़े और खिड़की के बीच छोटी मेज़ रख दो।
sofe aur khiṛkī ke bīc choṭī mez rakh do.
Put the small table between the sofa and the window. (informal)
भीड़ के बीच वह बच्चा अकेला खड़ा था।
bhīṛ ke bīc vah baccā akelā khaṛā thā.
The child was standing alone in the midst of the crowd.
The crowd example does not require geometrically equal distances. के बीच conceptualizes the child as surrounded or embedded amid salient people.
Coordinated singulars and plural complements
Two named participants form one complement: राम और सीमा के बीच. A plural noun takes its oblique plural form.

This is an abstract relationship, not a physical gap. Relations such as समझौता, बातचीत, अंतर, तनाव, and सहयोग frequently occur with के बीच because they inherently connect participants.
तीन देशों के बीच नया व्यापार समझौता हुआ है।
tīn deśoṃ ke bīc nayā vyāpār samjhautā huā hai.
A new trade agreement has been reached among the three countries. (formal)
Pronouns and paired participants
Plural pronouns use हमारे बीच, तुम्हारे बीच, आपके बीच, इनके/उनके बीच. To relate two singular participants, coordinate their possessive-like forms: मेरे और उसके बीच “between me and him/her.”
हमारे बीच अब कोई ग़लतफ़हमी नहीं है।
hamāre bīc ab koī ġalatfahmī nahīṃ hai.
There is no misunderstanding between us now.
यह बात मेरे और तुम्हारे बीच रहेगी।
yah bāt mere aur tumhāre bīc rahegī.
This will stay between you and me. (informal)
English reverses the conventional order to “you and me” in the translation, but Hindi case marking remains मेरे ... तुम्हारे, not citation मैं ... तुम.
में: membership in a set or domain
Use में when the point is that something belongs to, occurs within, or is selected from a group—not that members stand in a mutual relation.
इस कक्षा में रीना सबसे तेज़ पढ़ती है।
is kakṣā meṃ rīnā sabse tez paṛhtī hai.
Reena reads fastest in this class.
इन तस्वीरों में मेरी पसंदीदा कौन-सी है?
in tasvīroṃ meṃ merī pasandīdā kaun-sī hai?
Which one among these pictures is my favorite?
टीम में पाँच नए खिलाड़ी शामिल हुए हैं।
ṭīm meṃ pā̃c nae khilāṛī śāmil hue haiṃ.
Five new players have joined the team.
Here में defines the comparison set, selection set, or membership domain. Replacing it with के बीच would foreground relationships or being surrounded, which is not the intended meaning.

Choosing from a set: में से
Selection commonly uses में से meṃ se “out of/from among.” This is more precise than के बीच when one or more items are extracted from a set.
इन तीन डिज़ाइनों में से एक चुन लीजिए।
in tīn ḍizāinoṃ meṃ se ek cun lījie.
Choose one of these three designs.
हममें से किसी को उसका पता नहीं मालूम।
hammeṃ se kisī ko uskā patā nahīṃ mālūm.
None of us knows his address.
हममें is the conventional fused spelling of हम + में. हमारे बीच किसी को... would instead mean “among the people present in our relational group” and sounds less like clean set extraction.
बीच में and interruption
Bare बीच में means “in the middle” spatially, temporally, or conversationally. The landmark is recoverable from context.
मेरी बात के बीच में मत बोलो।
merī bāt ke bīc meṃ mat bolo.
Don't interrupt me while I'm speaking. (informal)
The fuller phrase literally locates speech in the middle of मेरी बात. Colloquial बीच में मत बोलो omits the explicit complement. This interruption expression is grammaticalized but remains connected to the image of entering an ongoing span.
Productive relation versus lexical government
Relational nouns freely combine with participant sets: छात्रों के बीच चर्चा, देशों के बीच तनाव. But verbs of distribution, inclusion, and selection impose their own frames. किसी को समूह में शामिल करना “include someone in a group” selects में; विकल्पों में से चुनना selects में से. English among cannot determine the Hindi postposition on its own.
पुरस्कार पाँच विजेताओं में बाँट दिया गया।
puraskār pā̃c vijetāoṃ meṃ bā̃ṭ diyā gayā.
The prize was divided among five winners.
Distribution बाँटना conventionally uses में for the recipient set. विजेताओं के बीच can occur, but it gives greater prominence to the group as a relational field.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English preposition-first order
❌ के बीच दोनों घर एक रास्ता है।
Incorrect: the reference points precede के बीच.
✅ दोनों घरों के बीच एक रास्ता है।
donoṃ gharoṃ ke bīc ek rāstā hai.
There is a path between the two houses.
2. Leaving a plural direct
❌ दोनों लड़के के बीच बहस हुई।
Incorrect: a plural complement becomes oblique लड़कों.
✅ दोनों लड़कों के बीच बहस हुई।
donoṃ laṛkoṃ ke bīc bahas huī.
The two boys had an argument.
3. Using citation-form pronouns
❌ यह बात मैं और तुम के बीच है।
Incorrect: use possessive-like forms before के बीच.
✅ यह बात मेरे और तुम्हारे बीच है।
yah bāt mere aur tumhāre bīc hai.
This matter is between you and me. (informal)
4. Using के बीच for set extraction
❌ इन किताबों के बीच एक चुनिए।
Incorrect for selecting one from a set: use में से.
✅ इन किताबों में से एक चुनिए।
in kitāboṃ meṃ se ek cunie.
