में for containment and domains

The postposition में meṃ locates something inside a container or within a domain: कमरे में kamre meṃ “in the room,” किताब में kitāb meṃ “in the book,” हिंदी में hindī meṃ “in Hindi.” Its complement precedes it and stands in the oblique case.

The idea of containment extends naturally from physical interiors to groups, fields of activity, periods, and states. English uses in, at, among, and sometimes no preposition for these meanings, so में should be learned through its Hindi semantic core rather than one English equivalent.

Physical containment

Use में when the located entity is conceptualized as inside a bounded space, container, or substance.

बच्चे कमरे में खेल रहे हैं।

bacce kamre meṃ khel rahe haiṃ.

The children are playing in the room.

चाबियाँ मेरे बैग में हैं।

cābiyā̃ mere baig meṃ haiṃ.

The keys are in my bag.

Masculine कमरा becomes oblique कमरे. बैग is an invariant masculine singular, but possessive मेरे makes the oblique environment visible.

Direct formWith में
कमरा kamrāकमरे में kamre meṃ
बक्सा baksāबक्से में bakse meṃ
किताब kitābकिताब में kitāb meṃ
कमरे kamreकमरों में kamroṃ meṃ
किताबें kitābeṃकिताबों में kitāboṃ meṃ
💡
Containment can be literal or conceptual, but case is constant: build the oblique noun phrase first, then add meṃ.

Information and language as containers

A book, message, film, or language can be treated as a domain containing words or information.

इस किताब में कई उपयोगी उदाहरण हैं।

is kitāb meṃ kaī upyogī udāharaṇ haiṃ.

There are many useful examples in this book.

यह बात आसान हिंदी में समझाइए।

yah bāt āsān hindī meṃ samjhāie.

Please explain this in simple Hindi.

English may say “say it in Hindi,” and Hindi uses the same containment metaphor. में identifies the linguistic medium/domain here; it does not mark a physical interior.

Fields, activities, and membership

Abstract domains take में: विज्ञान में vigyān meṃ “in science,” काम में kām meṃ “in the work,” इस मामले में is māmle meṃ “in this matter.” A plural group can be the containing set.

उसे इतिहास में बहुत रुचि है।

use itihās meṃ bahut ruci hai.

She is very interested in history.

इन छात्रों में तीन लोग नेपाल से हैं।

in chātroṃ meṃ tīn log nepāl se haiṃ.

Among these students, three are from Nepal.

The second sentence views the students as a set. For a spatial position between distinct objects or people, के बीच ke bīc is often clearer; the dedicated comparison page covers that boundary.

Some predicates conventionally select में, including रुचि होना ruci honā “be interested in” and माहिर होना māhir honā “be skilled at.” Their complements fit the domain meaning, but their exact selection is lexical and should be learned with the predicate.

Time periods and completion windows

में locates an event within a period or gives the time needed for completion. Context separates “during” from “in/within.”

हम सर्दियों में जयपुर जाते हैं।

ham sardiyoṃ meṃ jaypur jāte haiṃ.

We go to Jaipur in winter.

यह काम दो घंटे में पूरा हो जाएगा।

yah kām do ghaṇṭe meṃ pūrā ho jāegā.

This work will be finished in two hours.

The first places a recurring event inside a season. The second measures the interval until completion. English uses in for both, but Hindi's shared logic is inclusion within a temporal span.

Pronoun forms

Demonstratives and personal pronouns use conventional fused forms: इसमें ismeṃ “in this,” उसमें usmeṃ, इनमें inmeṃ, उनमें unmeṃ, मुझमें mujhmeṃ, हममें hammeṃ, तुममें tummeṃ, आपमें āpmeṃ. By contrast, postpositions such as पर remain separate in मुझ पर mujh par and आप पर āp par.

इसमें चीनी नहीं है, लेकिन उसमें थोड़ी है।

ismeṃ cīnī nahīṃ hai, lekin usmeṃ thoṛī hai.

There is no sugar in this one, but there is a little in that one.

आपमें बहुत धैर्य है।

āpmeṃ bahut dhairya hai.

You have a great deal of patience. (respectful)

Do not say मैं में. The neutral form is मुझमें mujhmeṃ. Complete paradigms belong in the pronoun section.

में versus पर

Choose में for an interior/domain and पर par for a surface, point, occasion, or activity-site construed as a point. The latter pattern is developed on the page for पर.

किताब बैग में है, और बैग मेज़ पर है।

kitāb baig meṃ hai, aur baig mez par hai.

The book is in the bag, and the bag is on the table.

Some institutions allow different construals. दफ़्तर में emphasizes being inside/at the office; काम पर means “at work/on duty.” These are not interchangeable translations of English at.

💡
Ask how Hindi conceptualizes the location: interior or domain favors meṃ; surface, point, or occasion favors par. Physical reality alone does not settle every institutional expression.

Lexical government and idioms

Productive containment lets you create phrases such as डिब्बे में and शहर में freely. Other combinations are stored with a predicate: मुसीबत में होना musībat meṃ honā “be in trouble,” ध्यान में रखना dhyān meṃ rakhnā “keep in mind,” and किसी पर भरोसा करना kisī par bharosā karnā “trust someone.” Learn the governing predicate with its postposition; do not infer its case frame solely from the English translation.

इस बात को ध्यान में रखकर फ़ैसला कीजिए।

is bāt ko dhyān meṃ rakhkar faislā kījie.

Make the decision while keeping this point in mind. (formal/polite)

A natural exchange

दूध कहाँ है? — ऊपर वाले खाने में; उसी में मक्खन भी रखा है।

dūdh kahā̃ hai? — ūpar vāle khāne meṃ; usī meṃ makkhan bhī rakhā hai.

Where's the milk? — In the upper compartment; the butter is in that same one too.

Oblique खाने में and pronominal उसी में express the same containment relation.

Common Mistakes

1. Using English preposition-first order

❌ में कमरे बच्चे हैं।

Incorrect: में follows its oblique complement.

✅ कमरे में बच्चे हैं।

kamre meṃ bacce haiṃ.

There are children in the room.

2. Keeping a masculine -ā noun direct

❌ कमरा में कोई नहीं है।

Incorrect: कमरा becomes oblique कमरे before में.

✅ कमरे में कोई नहीं है।

kamre meṃ koī nahīṃ hai.

There is no one in the room.

3. Using a direct plural before में

❌ इन अलमारियाँ में सर्दियों के कपड़े हैं।

Incorrect: plural अलमारियाँ becomes oblique अलमारियों before में.

✅ इन अलमारियों में सर्दियों के कपड़े हैं।

in almāriyoṃ meṃ sardiyoṃ ke kapṛe haiṃ.

There are winter clothes in these wardrobes.

4. Translating every English “at” with में

❌ वह बस स्टॉप में इंतज़ार कर रही है।

Incorrect: a bus stop is normally construed as a location point, so use पर.

✅ वह बस स्टॉप पर इंतज़ार कर रही है।

vah bas sṭop par intazār kar rahī hai.

She is waiting at the bus stop.
