में versus पर

Use में when the landmark contains the located thing or supplies an abstract domain: कमरे में “in the room,” इतिहास में “in history.” Use पर when the landmark supports something, serves as a point on a route or social map, or names an occasion: मेज़ पर “on the table,” स्टेशन पर “at the station,” जन्मदिन पर “on a birthday.” The physical contrast is a useful starting point, but conventional Hindi—not English in, on, or at—decides the many extended uses.

For the full semantic ranges, see में for containment and domains and पर for surfaces, locations, and occasions.

The decision tree

Ask these questions in order:

  1. Is one thing physically inside another? Choose में.
  2. Is it supported by, attached to, or displayed on a surface? Choose पर.
  3. Is the place viewed as an activity-containing institution or event? Choose
  4. Is it viewed as a point, stop, workplace, service location, or destination?
  5. Is the noun an information domain? Content is typically में—किताब में—while a medium or platform often uses पर—वेबसाइट पर, टीवी पर.
  6. Can both occur? Decide whether you mean interior/participation (में) or availability, surface, or reference-point location (पर).

cābiyā̃ darāz meṃ haiṃ.

The keys are in the drawer.

cābiyā̃ mez par haiṃ.

The keys are on the table.

This is the clearest physical contrast: में profiles an enclosing region; पर profiles contact with a supporting surface.

💡
Do not translate the English preposition first. Picture how Hindi construes the landmark: container, domain, surface, point, institution, medium, or occasion.

Physical minimal pairs

With the same landmark, changing the postposition can change the scene rather than merely its style.

khilaunā ḍibbe meṃ hai.

The toy is in the box.

khilaunā ḍibbe par hai.

The toy is on the box.

bacce bas meṃ baiṭhe haiṃ.

The children are sitting in the bus.

bas par nayā vijñāpan lagā hai.

A new advertisement is displayed on the bus.

The oblique form appears before either postposition: डिब्बा → डिब्बे में/पर. Do not let the vivid spatial difference hide the shared case rule.

For ordinary furniture, Hindi often chooses support where English uses a different preposition. One sits कुर्सी पर, sleeps बिस्तर पर, and hangs a picture दीवार पर.

dādī kursī par baiṭhī axbār paṛh rahī haiṃ.

Grandmother is sitting on a chair reading the newspaper. (respectful)

Both are common, but they answer different versions of “where?” घर में locates someone or something inside the house and can contrast the interior with the yard or street. घर पर means at home, emphasizing presence or availability at that social location.

bacce ghar meṃ khel rahe haiṃ; bāhar bahut garmī hai.

The children are playing inside the house; it is very hot outside.

maĩ śām chah baje ghar par rahū̃gā; pārsal tab bhej dījie.

I'll be at home at six; please send the parcel then.

The second sentence does not deny that the speaker will physically be inside. It selects पर because a delivery depends on the person being available at the home address. English at home happens to match this use, but English cannot predict all comparable expressions.

Institutions, workplaces, and public points

में presents an institution as an environment containing an activity: स्कूल में पढ़ना, बैठक में बोलना, दफ़्तर में कोई होना. पर commonly presents a workplace, stop, or service site as a point: काम पर जाना, स्टेशन पर मिलना, दुकान पर रुकना.

mīrā āj daftar meṃ akelī hai.

Meera is alone in the office today.

mīrā āj kām par nahīṃ gaī.

Meera did not go to work today.

ham sṭeśan par mukhya darvāze ke pās mileṅge.

We'll meet at the station near the main entrance.

स्टेशन में is possible when the interior is genuinely contrasted—स्टेशन में बहुत भीड़ थी, बाहर सड़क खाली थी—but neutral meeting and arrival expressions favor स्टेशन पर. Similarly, दुकान में focuses on being inside a shop; दुकान पर treats the shop as a work or service point.

Participation and occasions

An event can be construed as an activity one participates in, or as an occasion at which another act occurs. में marks participation or internal content; पर marks the occasion or trigger.

baiṭhak meṃ bajaṭ par lambī carcā huī.

There was a long discussion of the budget in the meeting.

uske janmadin par hamne use parivār kī ek purānī tasvīr bheṇṭ kī.

On her birthday, we presented her with an old family photograph.

In the first sentence, बैठक में is the containing event; बजट पर marks the topic, another extended use of पर. In the second, the birthday is the occasion associated with gift-giving. With a wedding, standard Hindi usually makes the occasion explicit as शादी के मौक़े पर or शादी के अवसर पर. If the claim concerns something that happened as part of wedding proceedings, शादी में is natural: शादी में बहुत लोग आए “many people came to the wedding.”

śādī meṃ donoṃ parivāroṃ ke purāne dost bhī āe the.

Old friends of both families had also come to the wedding.

Texts, information, media, and platforms

For information contained in a text, list, picture, or record, Hindi usually uses में. For a mark written on a physical surface, or content encountered through a broadcast medium or digital platform, पर is conventional.

riporṭ meṃ is xarc kā koī zikr nahīṃ hai.

There is no mention of this expense in the report.

lifāfe par apnā pūrā patā likhie.

Write your full address on the envelope. (respectful)

yah sākṣātkār kal ṭīvī par dikhāyā jāegā.

This interview will be shown on television tomorrow.

vebsāiṭ par samay badal gayā hai, lekin īmel meṃ purānā samay likhā hai.

The time has changed on the website, but the old time is written in the email.

The last pair is conventional rather than geometrically literal. A website is construed as a platform (पर); an email message is a bounded text containing information (में). Some speakers extend पर to particular apps or chats, especially under English influence, but मैसेज में लिखा है remains the natural content reading.

Abstract domains versus targets

में places an item within a field, set, period, or condition: इतिहास में, कानून में, जनवरी में, मुसीबत में. पर identifies the target of attention, discussion, dependence, or pressure: विषय पर, फ़ैसले पर, उस पर भरोसा.

ādhunik hindī sāhitya meṃ is upanyās kā viśeṣ sthān hai.

This novel has a special place in modern Hindi literature. (academic)

samiti agle saptāh prastāv par vicār karegī.

The committee will consider the proposal next week. (formal)

These collocations must be learned with their governing noun or verb. Spatial imagery explains the contrast historically and conceptually, but it does not authorize replacing पर in विचार करना with में.

A short dialogue

a: kyā āp abhī ghar meṃ haiṃ? ba: ghar par hī hū̃, lekin ghar ke andar nahīṃ—barāmde meṃ baiṭhā hū̃.

A: Are you inside the house right now? B: I'm at home, but not inside—I'm sitting on the veranda. (respectful question)

The reply distinguishes the larger social location घर पर from the speaker's exact position बरामदे में, outside the enclosed interior. The questioner's घर में specifically asks about the interior. In a delivery call, घर पर हूँ is the ordinary availability answer; घर में हूँ specifically presents the house as the enclosing space.

Diagnostic checklist

  • Is there containment, participation, membership, a period, or an information domain? Choose में.
  • Is there surface support, attachment, a point location, a service site, a medium, a target, or an occasion? Choose पर.
  • With घर, दुकान, दफ़्तर, स्टेशन, what construal is relevant: interior or social/reference point?
  • Is the event being entered as a participant (में) or used as the occasion for something else (पर)?
  • Are you copying English in/on/at? Check the Hindi collocation instead.

Common Mistakes

The keys are on the table.

Incorrect for a calendar day—Hindi uses को with days, not में or पर.

maĩ somvār ko āū̃gā.

I will come on Monday.

Incorrect for information contained in the report; पर would need a surface or topic interpretation.

riporṭ meṃ iskā zikr hai.

This is mentioned in the report.

Incorrect—participation in an event is expressed with में.

ham baiṭhak meṃ śāmil hue.

We took part in the meeting.

Key Takeaways

  • में profiles an interior, containing activity, period, condition, set, or information domain.
  • पर profiles a surface, reference point, service location, medium, target, or occasion.
  • Places such as घर, दुकान, and स्टेशन permit both when the speaker changes the construal.
  • English in, on, and at do not map one-to-one onto either postposition.
  • Learn abstract uses with their collocations: बैठक में, विषय पर, रिपोर्ट में, वेबसाइट पर.
