Postpositional phrase placement

A Hindi postpositional phrase consists of a complement followed by its postposition: दफ़्तर में “in the office,” रीना के साथ “with Reena,” इस विषय के बारे में “about this subject.” In neutral clauses, the whole phrase occurs before the final predicate. When it moves for topic or focus, it moves as a constituent; the postposition cannot be stranded elsewhere.

Hindi case marking makes several placements possible, but each placement has a discourse effect. Clause-initial phrases commonly set a frame or topic, immediately preverbal phrases often receive narrow focus, and postverbal phrases are normally detached afterthoughts rather than neutral complements.

Keep the postpositional phrase intact

The postposition closes the phrase it belongs to. Brackets make the structure visible:

[सुबह] [पुराने दफ़्तर में] [नई टीम के साथ] [काम किया]

कबीर ने सुबह पुराने दफ़्तर में नई टीम के साथ काम किया।

kabīr ne subah purāne daftar meṃ naī ṭīm ke sāth kām kiyā.

Kabir worked with the new team in the old office in the morning.

Both पुराने दफ़्तर में and नई टीम के साथ are complete constituents. Their internal order is fixed even though their position relative to other constituents is flexible. See postpositions and oblique complements for how the complement itself takes oblique form.

हमने पड़ोसियों के लिए बालकनी में दो कुर्सियाँ रखीं।

hamne paṛosiyoṃ ke lie bālkanī meṃ do kursiyā̃ rakhīṃ.

We put two chairs on the balcony for the neighbors.

Here पड़ोसियों के लिए expresses beneficiary and बालकनी में expresses location. Neither के लिए nor में can be detached from its complement.

💡
Before moving a postpositional phrase, bracket it mentally: [noun phrase + postposition]. Move the entire bracket, including any adjective, possessor, and case form inside it.

Neutral placement depends on grammatical function

A broad setting tends to occur relatively early, while a complement selected by the predicate tends to remain close to it.

अंजलि ने बैठक में नई योजना के बारे में बात की।

añjali ne baiṭhak meṃ naī yojnā ke bāre meṃ bāt kī.

Anjali spoke about the new plan at the meeting.

बैठक में sets the location for the whole event. नई योजना के बारे में belongs closely with बात की, because it identifies the topic of speaking. Reversing them is possible, but naturally highlights the location or makes the plan an established frame.

विवेक ने रात को अपने भाई से पैसे के बारे में पूछा।

vivek ne rāt ko apne bhāī se paise ke bāre meṃ pūchā.

Vivek asked his brother about the money at night.

This clause layers time, interlocutor, and topic before the verb. Hindi does not need one rigid slot for all PPs. Their semantic scope and their relation to the predicate guide the order.

Initial PPs create a frame or topic

A place or time PP can precede the subject to establish the domain within which the comment holds.

इस शहर में रात को बसें जल्दी बंद हो जाती हैं।

is śahar meṃ rāt ko baseṃ jaldī band ho jātī haiṃ.

In this city, buses stop running early at night.

मेरे परिवार में सब लोग सुबह चाय पीते हैं।

mere parivār meṃ sab log subah cāy pīte haiṃ.

In my family, everyone drinks tea in the morning.

These initial phrases are not necessarily arguments of the verb. They establish a spatial or social frame for the whole proposition. English often marks such frames with a comma; Hindi punctuation varies, and an ordinary integrated PP does not require one.

An argument PP can also be topicalized when already given:

उस प्रस्ताव के बारे में निदेशक ने अभी कोई फ़ैसला नहीं किया है।

us prastāv ke bāre meṃ nideśak ne abhī koī faislā nahīṃ kiyā hai.

As for that proposal, the director has not made any decision yet.

The topic phrase remains complete. Fronting does not turn के बारे में into a free connector.

Immediately preverbal PPs receive narrow prominence

The region before the predicate is a natural location for new or contrastive information. A focused PP often appears there, sometimes with ही or तो.

मैं यह बात आपसे ही कह रही हूँ, किसी और से नहीं।

maĩ yah bāt āpse hī kah rahī hū̃, kisī aur se nahīṃ.

I am saying this to you specifically, not to anyone else. (female speaker)

वे छुट्टियों में ट्रेन से जाएँगे, विमान से नहीं।

ve chuṭṭiyoṃ meṃ ṭren se jāẽge, vimān se nahīṃ.

They will travel by train during the holidays, not by plane.

In both examples the contrastive से phrase is close to the predicate. Case marking identifies its role, while position and prosody present it as the answer to “to whom?” or “by what means?”

One proposition in four orders

These four versions all say that Farah will meet Aarav at the café in the evening.

Neutral presentation

In a plain statement, time and place precede the selected companion phrase and final verb:

फ़राह शाम को कैफ़े में आरव से मिलेगी।

farāh śām ko kaife meṃ ārav se milegī.

Farah will meet Aarav at the café in the evening. (neutral presentation)

Place as topic

If several venues are being discussed, the café can frame the sentence:

कैफ़े में फ़राह शाम को आरव से मिलेगी।

kaife meṃ farāh śām ko ārav se milegī.

At the café, Farah will meet Aarav in the evening. (place topic)

Place in contrastive focus

If someone proposes the office, put the corrected place close to the verb and mark it with ही:

फ़राह शाम को आरव से कैफ़े में ही मिलेगी, दफ़्तर में नहीं।

farāh śām ko ārav se kaife meṃ hī milegī, daftar meṃ nahīṃ.

Farah will meet Aarav at the café specifically, not at the office, in the evening. (contrastive place focus)

Postverbal afterthought

If the speaker remembers the venue only after completing the clause, it can be appended with its own intonation:

फ़राह शाम को आरव से मिलेगी—कैफ़े में।

farāh śām ko ārav se milegī—kaife meṃ.

Farah will meet Aarav in the evening—at the café. (spoken afterthought)

The last version is natural (informal) as a clarification. In planned neutral prose, keeping कैफ़े में before मिलेगी is better.

💡
Initial PP usually means “within this frame” or “as for this relation”; immediately preverbal PP often answers a contrast question; postverbal PP normally repairs or adds information. The same case marking does not make those discourse effects disappear.

Placement can clarify attachment

A PP can in principle relate to different parts of a sentence. Keeping it near the expression it modifies reduces ambiguity.

सीमा ने दूरबीन से छत पर बैठे पक्षी को देखा।

sīmā ne dūrbīn se chat par baiṭhe pakṣī ko dekhā.

Seema used binoculars to look at the bird sitting on the roof.

दूरबीन से describes the instrument of seeing, while छत पर belongs inside छत पर बैठे पक्षी. Moving छत पर away from बैठे पक्षी could briefly suggest that Seema herself was on the roof. Rich case marking identifies relations such as instrument and location, but it does not automatically settle every attachment.

Long PPs also compete with processing needs. A heavy frame is often placed first in formal prose:

नई शिक्षा नीति के लागू होने के बाद स्कूलों में कई बदलाव आए।

naī śikṣā nīti ke lāgū hone ke bād skūloṃ meṃ kaī badlāv āe.

After the new education policy came into effect, many changes occurred in schools. (formal)

Placing this long के बाद phrase first lets the reader establish the temporal frame before reaching the main subject and predicate.

What cannot be scrambled freely

You may move आरव के साथ as a whole, but not place आरव at the beginning and leave के साथ near the verb. You may front उस मुद्दे पर, but its demonstrative and case-marked noun must travel with पर. Elements inside relative clauses and tightly built noun phrases are also not freely extractable.

This is the crucial limit on the slogan “Hindi has free word order.” Hindi allows constituent order to respond to information structure. It does not license random word shuffling.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting a Hindi postposition before its complement

❌ वह साथ अपनी बहन बाज़ार गई।

Incorrect—के साथ must follow its complement.

✅ वह अपनी बहन के साथ बाज़ार गई।

vah apnī bahan ke sāth bāzār gaī.

She went to the market with her sister.

2. Stranding part of a compound postposition

❌ इस प्रस्ताव मैंने के बारे में निदेशक से पूछा।

Incorrect—इस प्रस्ताव के बारे में is one constituent.

✅ इस प्रस्ताव के बारे में मैंने निदेशक से पूछा।

is prastāv ke bāre meṃ maĩne nideśak se pūchā.

As for this proposal, I asked the director about it.

3. Copying English postverbal placement as neutral

❌ हम बात करेंगे इस मुद्दे पर कल।

Incorrect as a neutral plan—the topic and time sound like separate afterthoughts.

✅ हम कल इस मुद्दे पर बात करेंगे।

ham kal is mudde par bāt kareṅge.

We will discuss this issue tomorrow.

4. Putting focus after the wrong PP

❌ मैं आज ही आपसे मिलूँगा।

Wrong for ‘I will meet with you specifically’; आज ही focuses today.

✅ मैं आज आपसे ही मिलूँगा।

maĩ āj āpse hī milū̃gā.

I will meet with you specifically today. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • A postpositional phrase is a complete constituent: complement first, postposition last.
  • Neutral PPs precede the predicate; broad settings tend to occur earlier than closely selected complements.
  • Initial, immediately preverbal, and postverbal placements signal frame/topic, focus, and afterthought respectively.
  • Case marking supports flexibility, but constituency, attachment, information structure, and prosody sharply limit what an order can mean.
