Negation and adverb placement

Neutral Hindi places नहीं immediately before the verbal predicate: वह कॉफ़ी नहीं पीती है “She does not drink coffee.” Time, place, frequency, and manner expressions normally occur earlier, but their order relative to नहीं matters because it helps determine what is denied.

English uses the auxiliary do and places not before a bare verb. Hindi has no equivalent do-support: objects and adverbials are built before नहीं + predicate. Hindi can also negate one constituent rather than the entire event, but then position, contrast, and prosody must identify the narrow scope.

The basic inventory of time, place, manner, and degree positions is introduced under adverb position in neutral clauses. This page adds negation and shows how relative order changes scope.

Neutral clause negation

In an ordinary denial, place नहीं before the full predicate:

सोनल आज दफ़्तर नहीं जा रही है।

sonal āj daftar nahīṃ jā rahī hai.

Sonal is not going to the office today.

हमने अभी टिकट नहीं ख़रीदे हैं।

hamne abhī ṭikaṭ nahīṃ xarīde haiṃ.

We have not bought the tickets yet.

The progressive predicate is जा रही है and the perfect predicate is ख़रीदे हैं. Neutral नहीं precedes the aspectual or participial part, not merely the final auxiliary.

💡
Find the predicate as a whole, then put neutral nahīṃ at its left edge: nahīṃ jā rahī hai, nahīṃ xarīde haiṃ, nahīṃ āegā.

The present copula may be absent after नहीं in many everyday clauses: वह आज खाली नहीं “She isn't free today” (informal). With a verbal habitual, both वह चाय नहीं पीता and वह चाय नहीं पीता है occur. Learners should first use the full neutral pattern and recognize shorter conversational forms rather than assuming every auxiliary can be dropped everywhere.

Adverbs occupy different scope zones

Adverbs do not all belong in one slot. Sentence adverbs express the speaker's assessment and tend to occur relatively early. Time and frequency locate or quantify the event. Manner stays close to the action.

शायद रीना कल बैठक में नहीं आएगी।

śāyad rīnā kal baiṭhak meṃ nahīṃ āegī.

Perhaps Reena will not come to the meeting tomorrow.

अर्जुन अक्सर रात को फ़ोन नहीं उठाता है।

arjun aksar rāt ko fon nahīṃ uṭhātā hai.

Arjun often does not answer the phone at night.

वह कभी मेहमानों से रूखे ढंग से बात नहीं करती।

vah kabhī mehmānoṃ se rūkhe ḍhaṅg se bāt nahīṃ kartī.

She never speaks rudely to guests.

In the last sentence, कभी ... नहीं forms a negative-polarity pattern meaning “never.” The two words need not be adjacent; कभी occupies an ordinary adverbial position and नहीं negates the predicate.

Manner before नहीं can receive narrow scope

Compare broad event negation with the denial of one manner:

अनिल ने सवाल का जवाब नहीं दिया।

anil ne savāl kā javāb nahīṃ diyā.

Anil did not answer the question.

अनिल ने सवाल का जवाब साफ़-साफ़ नहीं दिया।

anil ne savāl kā javāb sāf-sāf nahīṃ diyā.

Anil did not answer the question clearly.

The first denies the answering event. The second most naturally denies clear answering; Anil may have answered vaguely. English also distinguishes these meanings, often through stress. Hindi makes the manner expression immediately before नहीं especially available for narrow-scope interpretation.

That reading is a strong tendency, not a purely mechanical equation. Context and prosody still matter. If ambiguity would be costly, use an explicit correction:

उसने मना नहीं किया; उसने बस तुरंत जवाब नहीं दिया।

usne manā nahīṃ kiyā; usne bas turant javāb nahīṃ diyā.

She did not refuse; she simply did not answer immediately.

Here the second clause denies immediacy, not necessarily the eventual answer.

Constituent negation: “not X, but Y”

To reject one time, place, person, or means, place नहीं after the rejected constituent and supply the correction. This creates a contrastive pair rather than neutral predicate negation.

सोमवार को नहीं, मंगलवार को आइए।

somvār ko nahīṃ, maṅgalvār ko āie.

Come on Tuesday, not Monday. (respectful)

यह फ़ाइल मुझे नहीं, सीमा को भेजिए।

yah fāil mujhe nahīṃ, sīmā ko bhejie.

Send this file to Seema, not to me. (respectful)

These are natural corrective structures. In speech, the rejected and corrected phrases receive prominent stress. Without the alternative, मुझे नहीं can be incomplete or depend heavily on context.

Focus particles interact locally with negation. भी नहीं can mean “not even” or add a negative parallel; सिर्फ़ X नहीं means “not only X.” Their interpretation depends on which constituent the particle follows.

आज एक भी दुकान समय पर नहीं खुली।

āj ek bhī dukān samay par nahīṃ khulī.

Not a single shop opened on time today.

One proposition in four orders

All four examples report that Kiran did not speak loudly at yesterday's meeting. The order changes how that fact is packaged.

Neutral presentation

When the entire event is new, use time – place – manner – negation – predicate:

किरण ने कल बैठक में ज़ोर से बात नहीं की।

kiraṇ ne kal baiṭhak meṃ zor se bāt nahīṃ kī.

Kiran did not speak loudly at the meeting yesterday. (neutral presentation)

Time as topic

When comparing yesterday with other days, place the time frame first:

कल किरण ने बैठक में ज़ोर से बात नहीं की।

kal kiraṇ ne baiṭhak meṃ zor se bāt nahīṃ kī.

As for yesterday, Kiran did not speak loudly at the meeting. (time topic)

Manner in contrastive focus

If the issue is whether Kiran was loud, front the manner with तो and provide the positive alternative:

ज़ोर से तो किरण ने कल बैठक में बात नहीं की; वह बहुत धीरे बोली।

zor se to kiraṇ ne kal baiṭhak meṃ bāt nahīṃ kī; vah bahut dhīre bolī.

Kiran did not speak loudly at yesterday's meeting; she spoke very softly. (contrastive manner focus)

Place as a marked afterthought

If the speaker adds the location only after completing the denial, it forms a separate intonational unit:

किरण ने कल ज़ोर से बात नहीं की—बैठक में।

kiraṇ ne kal zor se bāt nahīṃ kī—baiṭhak meṃ.

Kiran did not speak loudly yesterday—at the meeting. (spoken afterthought)

The postverbal location is grammatical (informal) as a clarification, but it is not neutral planned order. Rich case marking keeps बैठक में recognizable; the pause explains why it comes after the predicate.

💡
Reordering does not merely decorate a negative clause. An early phrase becomes a frame or contrastive topic, a phrase adjacent to नहीं is readily interpreted inside its scope, and a postverbal phrase sounds detached.

Negation inside a multiword predicate

In simple predicates, नहीं precedes the finite or participial verb form. In modal and other multi-verb complexes, it can occur inside the complex, with its position reflecting scope:

वह पिछले हफ़्ते से ठीक से सो नहीं पा रही है।

vah pichle hafte se ṭhīk se so nahīṃ pā rahī hai.

She has not been able to sleep properly since last week.

The sequence सो नहीं पा रही है places negation between the bare lexical stem सो and the modal/aspectual complex पा रही है because the denied ability is “manage to sleep.” This shows why “always put नहीं before the first verb-looking word” is too crude.

राघव घर नहीं आया था।

rāghav ghar nahīṃ āyā thā.

Raghav had not come home.

The marked conversational order राघव घर आया नहीं था is also grammatical when a prior claim “he had come” is being explicitly rejected. It carries corrective prosody; it should not replace the neutral model.

Scope with अभी, अक्सर, and शायद

Several common combinations are best learned as meaning contrasts:

OrderLikely interpretation
अभी तैयार नहीं हैis not ready now / is not ready yet
शायद नहीं आएगाprobably or perhaps will not come
अक्सर समय पर नहीं आताoften fails to arrive on time
कभी देर से नहीं आताnever arrives late

English may move probably, often, and not around auxiliaries. Hindi keeps the predicate final and uses the relative order of adverbs, focused constituents, and नहीं to guide scope.

Common Mistakes

1. Placing neutral नहीं before the object

❌ वह नहीं यह दवा लेती है।

Incorrect for ordinary clause negation—this placement suggests a marked contrast on यह दवा.

✅ वह यह दवा नहीं लेती है।

vah yah davā nahīṃ letī hai.

She does not take this medicine.

2. Putting नहीं after the final auxiliary

❌ मोहित घर गया है नहीं।

Incorrect neutral order—नहीं belongs before the predicate, not after the final auxiliary.

✅ मोहित घर नहीं गया है।

mohit ghar nahīṃ gayā hai.

Mohit has not gone home.

3. Copying English sentence-final “either”

❌ रवि ने फ़ोन नहीं किया भी।

Incorrect for ‘Ravi did not call either’—भी follows the added participant.

✅ रवि ने भी फ़ोन नहीं किया।

ravi ne bhī fon nahīṃ kiyā.

Ravi did not call either.

4. Putting a sentence adverb inside an unnatural negative sequence

❌ वह नहीं शायद आज आएगी।

Incorrect as a neutral uncertainty statement—शायद scopes over the negative proposition and belongs earlier.

✅ शायद वह आज नहीं आएगी।

śāyad vah āj nahīṃ āegī.

Perhaps she will not come today.

5. Misordering अभी in the “not yet” reading

❌ वह नहीं अभी तैयार है।

Incorrect neutral order—अभी precedes the predicate whose current truth is denied.

✅ वह अभी तैयार नहीं है।

vah abhī taiyār nahīṃ hai.

She is not ready yet.

Key Takeaways

  • Neutral नहीं stands at the left edge of the verbal predicate, after ordinary objects and most adverbials.
  • Adverb placement reflects scope: sentence assessment is relatively high, while manner stays close to the event.
  • X नहीं, Y rejects one constituent; it is not the same structure as broad event negation.
  • Hindi order is flexible enough to express topic and corrective focus, but prosody, scope, and predicate structure rule out random placement.
