Hindi scrambling reorders complete constituents without changing their basic grammatical roles. A phrase marked by ने, को, से, में, पर, or a compound postposition remains identifiable after it moves. This permits object-before-subject, location-before-subject, and other nonneutral orders used for topic, focus, contrast, and discourse continuity.
Scrambling is not random permutation. Case helps recover roles, but information structure determines why a phrase moves, prosody marks the resulting organization, and the predicate normally remains final.
Neutral order is the comparison point
Start from a neutral subject–recipient–object–predicate clause:
नीलम ने आज सीमा को नई किताब दी।
nīlam ne āj sīmā ko naī kitāb dī.
Neelam gave Seema the new book today.
The markers identify नीलम ने as perfective agent and सीमा को as recipient. Unmarked feminine नई किताब controls दी. Neutral order makes the subject the early anchor and keeps the theme close to the predicate.
Now front the recipient:
सीमा को नीलम ने आज नई किताब दी।
sīmā ko nīlam ne āj naī kitāb dī.
As for Seema, Neelam gave her the new book today.
सीमा को remains recipient because को travels with it. The movement makes Seema the topic; it does not turn her into the subject.
Move complete constituents
Scrambling applies to phrases, not isolated words. Each bracketed unit can move intact:
- [मीरा ने] — ergative subject
- [कल] — time adverb
- [रवि को] — recipient
- [नई फ़ाइल] — direct object
- [भेजी] — predicate
Fronting a postpositional phrase is therefore straightforward:
नई परियोजना के लिए समिति ने कई सुझाव माँगे।
naī pariyojnā ke lie samiti ne kaī sujhāv mā̃ge.
For the new project, the committee requested several suggestions.
Compound के लिए remains with its oblique complement. Form के लिए समिति ने नई परियोजना... cannot preserve the same structure because the postposition has been stranded.
Modifiers normally move with their head:
वे तीन ज़रूरी दस्तावेज़ नीलम ने सुबह भेज दिए।
ve tīn zarūrī dastāvez nīlam ne subah bhej die.
Those three essential documents, Neelam sent in the morning.
The complete object NP fronts. Masculine plural दस्तावेज़ continues to control दिए.
One proposition in four scrambled shapes
The core proposition is “Mira sent Ravi the new file yesterday.”
Neutral report
Context: Everything is new.
मीरा ने कल रवि को नई फ़ाइल भेजी।
mīrā ne kal ravi ko naī fāil bhejī.
Mira sent Ravi the new file yesterday. (neutral)
Recipient as topic
Context: The conversation is already about Ravi.
रवि को मीरा ने कल नई फ़ाइल भेजी।
ravi ko mīrā ne kal naī fāil bhejī.
As for Ravi, Mira sent him the new file yesterday.
Contrastively focused sender
Context: Someone thinks Neelam sent the file.
रवि को नई फ़ाइल कल मीरा ने ही भेजी, नीलम ने नहीं।
ravi ko naī fāil kal mīrā ne hī bhejī, nīlam ne nahīṃ.
It was Mira who sent Ravi the new file yesterday, not Neelam.
Given recipient, object, and time occur early; focused मीरा ने ही stands immediately before the predicate.
Marked postverbal repair
Context: A speaker adds the recipient after a pause.
मीरा ने कल नई फ़ाइल भेजी—रवि को।
mīrā ne kal naī fāil bhejī—ravi ko.
Mira sent the new file yesterday—to Ravi. (spoken afterthought)
The dash represents a separate intonational phrase. The order is licensed as repair or afterthought, not as neutral verb-medial Hindi.
Object fronting preserves agreement
Unmarked objects can scramble even without visible case because agreement and context help identify them:
नई मशीन कंपनी ने पिछले महीने खरीदी।
naī maśīn kampanī ne pichle mahīne xarīdī.
The new machine, the company bought last month.
Feminine मशीन controls खरीदी. The ने-marked agent cannot be mistaken for the controller.
Mark the object with को, and it remains ineligible after fronting:
उस पुरानी मशीन को कंपनी ने पिछले महीने बेच दिया।
us purānī maśīn ko kampanī ne pichle mahīne bec diyā.
That old machine, the company sold last month.
Default बेच दिया follows from कंपनी ने + मशीन को. Linear first position and discourse prominence do not restore feminine agreement.
This contrast makes agreement a useful structural diagnostic: scrambling changes order but does not rewrite the case hierarchy.
Preverbal scrambling creates focus
A phrase moved toward the predicate commonly receives narrow focus:
मीरा ने फ़ाइल रवि को भेजी, मोहन को नहीं।
mīrā ne fāil ravi ko bhejī, mohan ko nahīṃ.
Mira sent the file to Ravi, not Mohan.
Recipient रवि को follows the theme and occupies the preverbal focus position. Neutral ditransitive order more readily places recipient before theme, but correction motivates the reversal.
मीरा ने रवि को फ़ाइल कल भेजी, आज नहीं।
mīrā ne ravi ko fāil kal bhejī, āj nahīṃ.
Mira sent Ravi the file yesterday, not today.
Time कल moves late under correction. Prosodic prominence and the rejected alternative make the focus clear.
Particles can reinforce the same structure:
मीरा ने फ़ाइल रवि को ही भेजी।
mīrā ne fāil ravi ko hī bhejī.
Mira sent the file only to Ravi.
ही follows the complete case-marked recipient. Scrambling never licenses रवि ही को.
Adjuncts scramble as frames
Time and place phrases frequently move to the left to establish a frame:
पिछले साल इस गाँव में कई नए घर बनाए गए।
pichle sāl is gā̃v meṃ kaī nae ghar banāe gae.
Last year, several new houses were built in this village.
Neither initial adjunct is a subject. Masculine plural घर controls passive बनाए गए. Initial position here organizes the domain rather than signaling agenthood.
Multiple frames have preferences: broader settings often precede narrower ones, and heavy new information tends later. Reversing them can be grammatical with a contrastive context, but not equally neutral.
Negation stays in the predicate domain
Fronting an object or adjunct does not normally drag नहीं away from the predicate:
वह फ़ाइल मीरा ने रवि को नहीं भेजी।
vah fāil mīrā ne ravi ko nahīṃ bhejī.
That file, Mira did not send to Ravi.
The fronted file is topic; negation denies sending. A contrast can instead target the recipient:
वह फ़ाइल मीरा ने रवि को नहीं, सीमा को भेजी।
vah fāil mīrā ne ravi ko nahīṃ, sīmā ko bhejī.
That file, Mira sent not to Ravi but to Seema.
Parallel को phrases make the correction local. The final predicate remains integrated.
Scrambling is normally clause-local
Within an embedded clause, constituents can reorder for its own discourse needs:
नीलम ने कहा कि रवि को मीरा ने नई फ़ाइल भेजी है।
nīlam ne kahā ki ravi ko mīrā ne naī fāil bhejī hai.
Neelam said that, as for Ravi, Mira has sent him the new file.
रवि को fronts inside the clause introduced by कि. Moving it before the matrix subject without a detached-topic frame would force a difficult long-distance analysis. Use रवि की बात करें तो... or a resumptive pronoun when the intended topic spans clauses.
The next page on limits on scrambling develops these boundaries.
Common Mistakes
1. Stranding a postposition
❌ रवि मीरा ने को नई फ़ाइल भेजी।
Incorrect for recipient-fronting — रवि को must move as a complete phrase.
✅ रवि को मीरा ने नई फ़ाइल भेजी।
ravi ko mīrā ne naī fāil bhejī.
As for Ravi, Mira sent him the new file.
2. Treating the first phrase as subject
❌ सीमा को रवि ने बुलाई।
Incorrect — initial सीमा को is still the marked object and cannot control feminine agreement.
✅ सीमा को रवि ने दफ़्तर बुलाया।
sīmā ko ravi ne daftar bulāyā.
Seema, Ravi called to the office.
3. Losing agreement after object fronting
❌ नई मशीन कंपनी ने पिछले महीने खरीदा।
Incorrect — fronted unmarked feminine मशीन still controls खरीदी.
✅ नई मशीन कंपनी ने पिछले महीने ही खरीदी।
naī maśīn kampanī ne pichle mahīne hī xarīdī.
The new machine, the company bought only last month.
4. Splitting the predicate complex
❌ मीरा ने भेज फ़ाइल रवि को दी है।
Incorrect — फ़ाइल and रवि को cannot be inserted inside भेज दी है.
✅ मीरा ने फ़ाइल रवि को भेज दी है।
mīrā ne fāil ravi ko bhej dī hai.
Mira has sent the file to Ravi.
Key Takeaways
- Case marking lets complete constituents move while retaining subject, object, recipient, and adjunct roles.
- Leftward movement commonly creates a topic; movement into the preverbal field commonly creates focus.
- Fronted objects keep their agreement eligibility or ineligibility.
- Postpositions, modifiers, and predicate complexes cannot be scattered word by word.
- Scrambling is primarily clause-local and always carries a discourse or processing effect beyond the neutral SOV baseline.
