Object fronting and topicalization

Hindi normally places an object before the verb, often after the subject: आरव ने वह नीली फ़ाइल कल भेजी “Aarav sent that blue file yesterday.” When the object is already the subject of conversation, it can move farther left: वह नीली फ़ाइल आरव ने कल भेजी “That blue file, Aarav sent yesterday.” This is object fronting or topicalization.

The fronted object remains inside the clause. It keeps any required को or other postposition, and it can still participate in agreement. This distinguishes object fronting from a left-dislocated topic, which commonly stands outside a complete clause and is resumed by a pronoun.

Neutral SOV and topicalized OSV

नैना ने यह भारी पार्सल सुबह भेजा।

nainā ne yah bhārī pārsal subah bhejā.

Naina sent this heavy parcel in the morning. (neutral SOV)

यह भारी पार्सल नैना ने सुबह भेजा।

yah bhārī pārsal nainā ne subah bhejā.

This heavy parcel, Naina sent in the morning. (object topic)

Both sentences describe the same event. The second begins with information that the listener can already identify—perhaps someone asked what happened to this heavy parcel. नैना ने सुबह भेजा is the comment about that topic.

Hindi permits OSV because ने, को, and other case markers help identify grammatical roles. Yet the order is not semantically empty: without an appropriate discourse context, the neutral SOV version is the safer baseline.

💡
Front an object when it answers “What about this one?” rather than merely because Hindi allows the words to move.

One proposition in four orders

Assume Aarav sent the blue file yesterday. Four arrangements package that fact differently.

Neutral report

आरव ने वह नीली फ़ाइल कल भेजी।

ārav ne vah nīlī fāil kal bhejī.

Aarav sent that blue file yesterday. (out-of-the-blue report)

Topicalized object

वह नीली फ़ाइल आरव ने कल भेजी।

vah nīlī fāil ārav ne kal bhejī.

That blue file, Aarav sent yesterday. (answering what happened to the file)

Contrastively focused object

वही नीली फ़ाइल आरव ने कल भेजी, लाल वाली नहीं।

vahī nīlī fāil ārav ne kal bhejī, lāl vālī nahīṃ.

Aarav sent that very blue file yesterday, not the red one. (corrective focus)

The fused form वही and the explicit alternative make the object exclusive focus. A topic organizes the comment; a focus selects one alternative as the correction.

Marked postverbal object

कल आरव ने भेजी वह नीली फ़ाइल।

kal ārav ne bhejī vah nīlī fāil.

Yesterday Aarav sent that blue file. (marked narrative reveal or afterthought)

Placing the object after भेजी is possible in expressive narration or as an afterthought, with its own prosodic contour. It is not a neutral alternative to SOV or OSV. The feminine form भेजी can anticipate the postverbal object, but such ordering requires a supportive context.

Case marking moves with the object

A fronted object retains the form licensed by the predicate.

नीलम को मैंने कल फ़ोन किया।

nīlam ko maĩne kal fon kiyā.

Neelam, I phoned yesterday.

इन सवालों का हम बैठक में जवाब देंगे।

in savāloṃ kā ham baiṭhak meṃ javāb deṃge.

These questions, we’ll answer at the meeting.

इस प्रस्ताव पर समिति अगले हफ़्ते चर्चा करेगी।

is prastāv par samiti agle hafte carcā karegī.

This proposal, the committee will discuss next week.

In the first example, animate specific नीलम keeps को. In इन सवालों का जवाब देना, the object-like participant is built into a genitive noun phrase, so the whole इन सवालों का constituent fronts with का. The verb चर्चा करना lexically selects पर, so इस प्रस्ताव पर must move as a unit. Fronting never gives permission to discard lexical case.

Agreement still diagnoses structure

With a perfective transitive verb and ने, an unmarked direct object may control agreement whether it precedes the subject or follows it:

ये चिट्ठियाँ रीमा ने रात में लिखीं।

ye ciṭṭhiyā̃ rīmā ne rāt meṃ likhīṃ.

These letters, Reema wrote at night.

Feminine plural चिट्ठियाँ controls लिखीं. Fronting has not removed it from the clause. Add को, however, and the object can no longer control agreement:

इन चिट्ठियों को रीमा ने रात में लिखा।

in ciṭṭhiyoṃ ko rīmā ne rāt meṃ likhā.

These particular letters, Reema wrote at night.

Now both agent रीमा ने and object इन चिट्ठियों को are overtly marked, so the predicate defaults to masculine singular लिखा. The word order has changed discourse prominence; the case pattern determines agreement.

💡
To check a fronted object, ignore its position for a moment. Ask whether it is को-marked and which noun would control agreement in the corresponding neutral clause.

Topics tend to be identifiable

Definite phrases, demonstratives, pronouns, and previously mentioned nouns make natural topics:

वह पुरानी रसीद मुझे अब तक नहीं मिली।

vah purānī rasīd mujhe ab tak nahīṃ milī.

That old receipt, I still haven’t found it / still haven’t received it.

Here वह पुरानी रसीद is an identifiable theme, and the experiencer मुझे follows it. An indefinite can be fronted when it is contrastive or introduced as a list item, but a completely new nonspecific object usually prefers a position closer to the verb.

एक कमरा हमें मिल गया, दूसरा अभी ढूँढ़ना है।

ek kamrā hameṃ mil gayā, dūsrā abhī ḍhū̃ṛhnā hai.

We found one room; we still have to find another.

The numeral creates a contrast set, so एक कमरा is licensed at the left edge even on first mention. “Given” is a strong tendency, not an absolute morphological condition.

Fronting, focus, and prosody

A fronted object can be a broad topic or a narrow correction. Prosody and particles disambiguate the two:

यह किताब मैंने पिछले साल पढ़ी थी।

yah kitāb maĩne pichle sāl paṛhī thī.

This book, I read last year. (topic; the book is already salient)

यही किताब मैंने पिछले साल पढ़ी थी, वह नहीं।

yahī kitāb maĩne pichle sāl paṛhī thī, vah nahīṃ.

This is the book I read last year, not that one. (corrective focus)

The topic version normally has a topic rise followed by the informative comment. The focus version places strong prominence on यही and rejects an alternative. Writing makes the distinction clearer through ही and an explicit correction.

Negation and clause boundaries

यह किताब मैंने नहीं खरीदी; मुझे उपहार में मिली थी।

yah kitāb maĩne nahīṃ xarīdī; mujhe upahār meṃ milī thī.

This book, I didn’t buy; I received it as a gift.

The object is the topic, while नहीं negates buying. Fronting does not itself change the scope of negation.

Pulling material across an embedded कि clause is much more restricted and can be hard to process. Use an explicit topic frame and a resumptive form when the intended relation crosses a clause boundary:

इस किताब की बात करें तो मुझे लगता है कि रवि ने इसे खरीदा है।

is kitāb kī bāt kareṃ to mujhe lagtā hai ki ravi ne ise xarīdā hai.

As for this book, I think Ravi bought it.

This avoids treating इस किताब as though it could be freely extracted from any embedded position. Rich case marking supports local flexibility, not unlimited scrambling across clause boundaries.

Common Mistakes

❌ सायरा हमने शाम को फ़ोन किया।

Incorrect — the specific animate object keeps को even when fronted.

✅ सायरा को हमने शाम को फ़ोन किया।

sāyrā ko hamne śām ko fon kiyā.

Saira, we phoned in the evening.

❌ वे कविताएँ सुमन ने दोपहर में लिखा।

Incorrect — the unmarked feminine plural object controls perfective agreement.

✅ वे कविताएँ सुमन ने दोपहर में लिखीं।

ve kavitāeṃ suman ne dopahar meṃ likhīṃ.

Those poems, Suman wrote in the afternoon.

❌ उस शिकायत परिषद पर शुक्रवार को चर्चा करेगी।

Incorrect — पर belongs with its complement and must move with it.

✅ उस शिकायत पर परिषद शुक्रवार को चर्चा करेगी।

us śikāyat par pariṣad śukravār ko carcā karegī.

That complaint, the council will discuss on Friday.

❌ यह फ़ाइल आरव ने ही भेजी।

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘this file, not another’: ही after ने focuses Aarav as sender.

✅ यही फ़ाइल आरव ने भेजी।

yahī fāil ārav ne bhejī.

Aarav sent this very file, not another one.

Key Takeaways

Object fronting moves an object to the clause’s left edge to make it a topic or correction. The object keeps its को, genitive, or lexical postposition, and its case status continues to govern perfective agreement. OSV is therefore a licensed, meaningful alternative to neutral SOV—not evidence that every Hindi word order is equally neutral.
