Hindi commonly places the most informative constituent in the preverbal field, close to the predicate. In मीरा बाज़ार से आम लाती है “Meera brings mangoes from the market,” आम is the natural answer to “What does Meera bring?”; in मीरा आम जयपुर से लाती है, जयपुर से is positioned to answer “Where does she bring the mangoes from?” English relies heavily on sentence stress, while Hindi combines prosody with constituent order.
This positional tendency is especially visible in information structure in answers.
“Immediately before the verb” is a useful tendency, not a rule that permits a phrase to split नहीं from the predicate or break apart a verb complex. The relevant focus position is the final constituent slot before the predicate domain.
New information near the predicate
Compare answers to different questions:
मीरा बाज़ार से आम लाती है।
mīrā bāzār se ām lātī hai.
Meera brings mangoes from the market. (What does she bring? — mangoes)
मीरा आम बाज़ार से लाती है।
mīrā ām bāzār se lātī hai.
Meera brings the mangoes from the market. (Where from? — from the market)
आम बाज़ार से मीरा ही लाती है।
ām bāzār se mīrā hī lātī hai.
It is Meera who brings the mangoes from the market. (marked answer to ‘Who?’)
The final example is possible because strong focus falls on मीरा ही, but it is not an out-of-the-blue order. The habitual predicate agrees with the focused feminine subject; discourse reordering never suspends ordinary case or agreement.
Wh-words reveal the focus position
Hindi usually keeps a content-question word in the position occupied by its answer. That makes questions an especially clear diagnostic.
मीरा बाज़ार से क्या लाती है? — मीरा बाज़ार से आम लाती है।
mīrā bāzār se kyā lātī hai? — mīrā bāzār se ām lātī hai.
What does Meera bring from the market? — Meera brings mangoes.
मीरा आम कहाँ से लाती है? — मीरा आम जयपुर से लाती है।
mīrā ām kahā̃ se lātī hai? — mīrā ām jaypur se lātī hai.
Where does Meera bring the mangoes from? — Meera brings them from Jaipur.
रीना ने चाबी किसको दी? — रीना ने चाबी चौकीदार को दी।
rīnā ne cābī kisko dī? — rīnā ne cābī caukīdār ko dī.
Who did Reena give the key to? — Reena gave it to the guard.
The question word and its answer occupy the same preverbal slot. This contrasts with English, which moves what, where, or who to the beginning of the clause.
One proposition in four information structures
Suppose Reena gave the key to the guard yesterday.
Neutral report
रीना ने कल चौकीदार को चाबी दी।
rīnā ne kal caukīdār ko cābī dī.
Reena gave the guard the key yesterday. (neutral report)
The direct object चाबी naturally precedes दी, and feminine agreement is visible on the verb.
Topicalized key
चाबी रीना ने कल चौकीदार को दी।
cābī rīnā ne kal caukīdār ko dī.
The key, Reena gave to the guard yesterday. (continuing a discussion about the key)
The key moves to the left as a topic. The recipient becomes the final constituent before the verb and can carry the main new information.
Contrastively focused recipient
रीना ने कल चाबी चौकीदार को दी, पड़ोसी को नहीं।
rīnā ne kal cābī caukīdār ko dī, paṛosī ko nahīṃ.
Reena gave the key to the guard yesterday, not to the neighbor. (corrective focus)
Strong prosody on चौकीदार को, reinforced by the rejected alternative, makes the recipient the focus even without ही.
Marked postverbal reveal
रीना ने कल चौकीदार को दी चाबी।
rīnā ne kal caukīdār ko dī cābī.
Yesterday Reena gave the guard—the key. (marked reveal or afterthought)
The postverbal object is possible with a separate intonational contour, but it is not the neutral answer to “What did she give?” Neutral Hindi places that answer before the verb.
Preverbal focus is not always adjacent on the page
Negation normally belongs immediately before the predicate:
सीमा दफ़्तर आज नहीं गई, कल गई थी।
sīmā daftar āj nahīṃ gaī, kal gaī thī.
Seema didn’t go to the office today; she went yesterday.
The focused day आज precedes नहीं गई. Saying that focus is “immediately before the verb” really means that it occupies the final argument/adverbial position before elements tightly associated with the predicate, including नहीं.
Auxiliaries and light verbs also form a predicate complex that should not be split:
सोनल ने रिपोर्ट आज ही भेज दी है।
sonal ne riporṭ āj hī bhej dī hai.
Sonal sent the report today, not on another day.
The focused phrase comes before भेज दी है, not between भेज, दी, and है. The light verb contributes completion, and the auxiliary carries tense; these pieces are not open slots for a relocated adverb.
Focus, topic, and particles
Position can suggest focus, but particles make the interpretation more explicit:
| Form | Likely discourse role |
|---|---|
| यह किताब मैंने कल खरीदी। | यह किताब is the topic; कल can be the new information. |
| मैंने कल यह किताब खरीदी। | यह किताब is in the ordinary preverbal object position. |
| मैंने कल यही किताब खरीदी। | यही किताब is exclusive/corrective focus. |
| यह किताब तो मैंने कल खरीदी। | यह किताब is contrasted as a topic with other items. |
यह किताब मैंने जयपुर में खरीदी थी।
yah kitāb maĩne jaypur meṃ xarīdī thī.
This book, I bought in Jaipur. (book as topic; place as informative comment)
Word order alone is not a complete mechanical code. Intonation, ही, तो, भी, the preceding question, and the set of alternatives all contribute. Still, the preverbal field is the strongest unmarked position for new or contrastive material.
Limits on scrambling
Case markers make roles recoverable, but processing and constituency still matter. Move whole phrases, not fragments:
समिति इस प्रस्ताव पर अगले सोमवार को चर्चा करेगी।
samiti is prastāv par agle somvār ko carcā karegī.
The committee will discuss this proposal next Monday. (time in preverbal focus position)
To answer “Which proposal?”, use समिति अगले सोमवार को इस प्रस्ताव पर चर्चा करेगी. The entire postpositional phrase इस प्रस्ताव पर moves. इस प्रस्ताव समिति पर cannot mean the same thing because it separates the noun from पर.
Heavy embedded clauses also tend to remain together. Do not insert focus material inside कि + clause merely to put it next to the matrix verb; focus normally belongs within the clause whose alternatives it contrasts.
Common Mistakes
❌ क्या मीरा दुकान से लाती है?
Wrong for ‘What does Meera bring from the shop?’ — clause-initial क्या is normally a yes/no question marker.
✅ मीरा दुकान से क्या लाती है?
mīrā dukān se kyā lātī hai?
What does Meera bring from the shop?
❌ मीरा सब्ज़ियाँ कहाँ लाती से है?
Incorrect — कहाँ से is one source phrase and must remain together before the verb.
✅ मीरा सब्ज़ियाँ कहाँ से लाती है?
mīrā sabziyā̃ kahā̃ se lātī hai?
Where does Meera bring the vegetables from?
❌ सोनल ने रिपोर्ट भेज दी आज है।
Incorrect — the time focus cannot split the lexical verb, light verb, and auxiliary.
✅ सोनल ने रिपोर्ट आज भेज दी है।
sonal ne riporṭ āj bhej dī hai.
Sonal has sent the report today.
❌ रीना ने चाबी दी चौकीदार को।
Marked as an afterthought, not a neutral answer to ‘Who received the key?’
✅ रीना ने चाबी चौकीदार को दी।
rīnā ne cābī caukīdār ko dī.
Reena gave the key to the guard.
Key Takeaways
Hindi’s preverbal field is the preferred home of new, questioned, and contrastive information. Wh-phrases normally stay where their answers would appear, and complete postpositional phrases move as units. Negation may intervene before the verb, and verb complexes remain intact, so “immediately before” describes an information-structural zone rather than permission to insert material anywhere inside the predicate.
