Contrastive focus with ही

The focus particle ही selects the constituent immediately before it as the precise or exclusive alternative: रीना ही आई “Rina herself/only Rina came,” आज ही “today in particular,” दिल्ली में ही “in Delhi itself.” It often translates as only, just, the very, or emphatic did, but its grammatical meaning is more consistent than those English choices: it narrows a set of alternatives.

Position is therefore crucial. रीना ने ही रवि को बुलाया focuses the caller; रीना ने रवि को ही बुलाया focuses the person called. The clause remains organized around Hindi case marking and a final predicate.

Attach ही to the focused constituent

रीना ही समय पर पहुँची।

rīnā hī samay par pahũcī.

Only Rina arrived on time.

रीना आज ही पहुँची।

rīnā āj hī pahũcī.

Rina arrived today, not on another day.

रीना दिल्ली ही गई।

rīnā dillī hī gaī.

Rina went specifically to Delhi, nowhere else relevant.

In each sentence, ही follows the expression whose alternatives are excluded: other people, other days, or other destinations. Spoken prominence normally reinforces the particle, but the particle makes the intended scope visible even in writing.

💡
Find the English phrase that could be completed as “X, not the alternatives.” Put ही immediately after that complete Hindi X.

One proposition in four information structures

Suppose Samira sent the report on Monday.

Neutral report

समीरा ने रिपोर्ट सोमवार को भेजी।

samīrā ne riporṭ somvār ko bhejī.

Samira sent the report on Monday. (neutral report)

Report as contrastive topic

रिपोर्ट तो समीरा ने सोमवार को भेज दी; बाकी काग़ज़ बाद में जाएँगे।

riporṭ to samīrā ne somvār ko bhej dī; bākī kāġaz bād meṃ jāeṃge.

As for the report, Samira sent it on Monday; the remaining papers will go later.

Here तो organizes the discourse around the report without saying that no other item was sent.

Monday as contrastive focus

समीरा ने रिपोर्ट सोमवार को ही भेजी, मंगलवार को नहीं।

samīrā ne riporṭ somvār ko hī bhejī, maṅgalvār ko nahīṃ.

Samira sent the report on Monday itself, not Tuesday.

The entire time phrase सोमवार को falls within the scope of ही. It explicitly excludes Tuesday.

Marked agent focus

रिपोर्ट सोमवार को समीरा ने ही भेजी, उनके सहायक ने नहीं।

riporṭ somvār ko samīrā ne hī bhejī, unke sahāyak ne nahīṃ.

It was Samira who sent the report on Monday, not her assistant. (marked corrective order)

Moving the object and time earlier creates a background against which समीरा ने ही supplies the correction. The proposition is related, but the focus alternatives have shifted from days to senders.

Subject, object, recipient, and adverbial scope

Because Hindi marks roles overtly, ही can follow many kinds of constituents:

नादिया ने ही दरवाज़ा खोला।

nādiyā ne hī darvāzā kholā.

Nadia was the one who opened the door.

नादिया ने यही दरवाज़ा खोला।

nādiyā ne yahī darvāzā kholā.

Nadia opened this very door.

नादिया ने चाबी चौकीदार को ही दी।

nādiyā ne cābī caukīdār ko hī dī.

Nadia gave the key only to the guard.

नादिया ने चाबी सुबह ही दी।

nādiyā ne cābī subah hī dī.

Nadia gave the key first thing in the morning / in the morning itself.

The case markers remain present under focus: नादिया ने ही, चौकीदार को ही. ही does not replace ने or को. When the whole case-marked phrase is focused, NP + postposition + ही is the usual order; NP + ही + postposition is also available when the nominal itself receives narrower focus. With a direct demonstrative, frequent combinations are written together: यही, वही, यहीं, वहीं.

Focus a whole postpositional phrase

To focus a location, beneficiary, source, or other relation, place ही after the postposition when the whole relation is exclusive:

बैठक इस कमरे में ही होगी।

baiṭhak is kamre meṃ hī hogī.

The meeting will be in this room itself, not elsewhere.

यह संदेश आपके लिए ही है।

yah sandeś āpke lie hī hai.

This message is only for you.

The forms allow finer distinctions. इसी कमरे में puts narrow focus on “this very room” within the locative phrase, while इस कमरे में ही focuses the location as a whole. Combining both forms can sound redundant in careful prose. By contrast, आपके लिए ही straightforwardly focuses the whole “for you” phrase.

💡
Case and postpositions stay intact under focus. NP + postposition + ही focuses the whole case-marked phrase, while NP + ही + postposition can narrowly focus the nominal. Do not treat ही as a replacement for the relation marker.

ही versus तो and भी

These particles create different alternative structures:

SentenceEffect
रीना तो आई।As for Rina, she came; others remain open.
रीना भी आई।Rina came too; at least one other person came.
रीना ही आई।Only Rina came; relevant others did not.

कविता भी बैठक में आई, लेकिन रीना ही अंत तक रुकी।

kavitā bhī baiṭhak meṃ āī, lekin rīnā hī ant tak rukī.

Kavita also came to the meeting, but only Rina stayed until the end.

Replacing भी with ही reverses the logic from addition to exclusion. Replacing ही with तो changes exclusive focus into a contrastive topic and leaves other alternatives unresolved. See contrastive topics with तो for that distinction.

Prosodic focus without ही versus explicit exclusivity

Preverbal placement and stress can correct an alternative without necessarily excluding every other possibility:

मैंने चाबी चौकीदार को दी, पड़ोसी को नहीं।

maĩne cābī caukīdār ko dī, paṛosī ko nahīṃ.

I gave the key to the guard, not the neighbor.

मैंने चाबी चौकीदार को ही दी।

maĩne cābī caukīdār ko hī dī.

I gave the key only to the guard.

The explicit correction in the first sentence produces contrast through context and prosody. ही in the second packages exclusivity grammatically, even without naming the rejected alternative. That difference matters when English only has ambiguous placement: Hindi normally shows the intended scope directly.

Negation and “not only”

Be careful when ही occurs near नहीं. The sequence ही नहीं … भी … forms the paired construction “not only … but also …”:

उसने रिपोर्ट ही नहीं लिखी, आँकड़े भी जाँचे।

usne riporṭ hī nahīṃ likhī, ā̃kaṛe bhī jā̃ce.

She not only wrote the report; she also checked the figures.

This does not mean “She did not write only the report.” The following भी phrase signals additive expansion. If you need simple negative exclusive focus, make the alternatives explicit:

सिर्फ़ रीना नहीं आई; बाकी सब समय पर पहुँच गए।

sirf rīnā nahīṃ āī; bākī sab samay par pahũc gae.

Only Rina didn’t come; everyone else arrived on time.

The negative scope of particles can be genuinely difficult, and punctuation alone cannot repair an ambiguous sentence. Use सिर्फ़, an explicit alternative, or a fuller clause when precision matters.

Agreement does not follow focus alone

Focus makes a constituent prominent, but it does not automatically make that constituent the agreement controller.

रीना ने ही दोनों चिट्ठियाँ लिखीं।

rīnā ne hī donoṃ ciṭṭhiyā̃ likhīṃ.

It was Rina who wrote both letters.

The focused agent is ने-marked; the unmarked feminine plural object दोनों चिट्ठियाँ controls लिखीं. Conversely, a को-marked focused object cannot control perfective agreement: रीना ने अर्जुन को ही बुलाया has default masculine singular बुलाया.

Common Mistakes

❌ ही रीना समय पर पहुँची।

Incorrect — clitic ही follows the constituent it focuses.

✅ रीना ही समय पर पहुँची।

rīnā hī samay par pahũcī.

Only Rina arrived on time.

❌ रीना ही आई।

Wrong for the intended additive meaning ‘Rina also came’: ही excludes alternatives.

✅ रीना भी आई।

rīnā bhī āī.

Rina also came.

❌ मीरा ने ही कबीर को बुलाया।

Wrong for the intended focus ‘Kabir, not anyone else’: this placement focuses Meera as caller.

✅ मीरा ने कबीर को ही बुलाया।

mīrā ne kabīr ko hī bulāyā.

Meera called only Kabir.

सीमा ही ने दोनों फ़ाइलें भेजीं।

sīmā hī ne donoṃ fāileṃ bhejīṃ.

Seema herself sent both files. (narrow focus on Seema; marked but grammatical)

सीमा ने ही दोनों फ़ाइलें भेजीं।

sīmā ne hī donoṃ fāileṃ bhejīṃ.

It was Seema who sent both files. (focus on the case-marked agent phrase)

Both placements are grammatical. The second is the more usual formulation in many contexts; the first makes the nominal सीमा itself the narrow focus before ने.

Key Takeaways

ही narrows the relevant alternatives. It normally follows the whole phrase it focuses, but it may precede a postposition when the nominal inside that phrase receives narrow focus. Moving it from an agent to an object, recipient, time, or location changes the truth conditions or correction being made. It preserves case marking and does not determine agreement by itself. Contrastive तो, additive भी, and exclusive ही are therefore not interchangeable emphatic particles.
