Additive focus with भी

Hindi भी adds its focused constituent to an already relevant set: रीना भी आई means that Rina came in addition to someone else. The particle follows the constituent in its scope, including that constituent's case marker or postposition. Its position therefore tells the listener exactly what is being added.

English also, too, and even occur in several positions and can leave scope unclear. Hindi भी is structurally more transparent, but context and prosody still decide whether the reading is plain addition, scalar surprise, free choice, or negative “either.” For the general relationship between late placement and prominence, see focus immediately before the verb.

Add one alternative to a known set

The simplest use presupposes that the proposition is already true of another alternative:

अमन बैठक में आया। रीना भी आई।

aman baiṭhak meṃ āyā. rīnā bhī āī.

Aman came to the meeting. Rina came too.

भी scopes over रीना. Feminine आई agrees normally with Rina; the focus particle does not alter case or agreement.

Move भी, and the added element changes:

रीना मंगलवार को भी आई।

rīnā maṅgalvār ko bhī āī.

Rina came on Tuesday too.

Now another day is already relevant, and मंगलवार को is added. The particle follows the entire time phrase, not bare मंगलवार before its postposition.

रीना बैठक में भी आई।

rīnā baiṭhak meṃ bhī āī.

Rina came to the meeting too. (in addition to going somewhere else)

Here the added alternative is a location/event frame. The words remain similar, but the discourse presupposition changes with the particle's host.

💡
To interpret भी, ask “X in addition to what?” The phrase immediately before भी supplies X; the preceding discourse supplies the comparison set.

भी follows case and postpositions

Case markers are inside the focused constituent:

Focused phraseForm with भीMeaning
रीनारीना भीRina too
रीना नेरीना ने भीRina too, as ergative agent
रीना कोरीना को भीRina too, as object/recipient
रीना के लिएरीना के लिए भीfor Rina too
दफ़्तर मेंदफ़्तर में भीin the office too

मोहन ने रीना को भी निमंत्रण भेजा।

mohan ne rīnā ko bhī nimantraṇ bhejā.

Mohan sent Rina an invitation too.

The recipient is the whole phrase रीना को. Form रीना भी को is impossible because it splits the postpositional constituent.

मोहन ने बच्चों के लिए भी मिठाई खरीदी।

mohan ne baccoṃ ke lie bhī miṭhāī xarīdī.

Mohan bought sweets for the children too.

Feminine मिठाई controls खरीदी; additive beneficiary बच्चों के लिए भी remains oblique and cannot control.

The same proposition in four discourse shapes

Take the core proposition “Neera sent the report on Monday.” The order changes according to what is already known and what is being added.

Neutral report

Context: Someone asks what happened on Monday.

नीरा ने सोमवार को रिपोर्ट भेजी।

nīrā ne somvār ko riporṭ bhejī.

Neera sent the report on Monday. (neutral)

Report as topic

Context: Several documents are under discussion; the report is already salient.

रिपोर्ट, नीरा ने सोमवार को भेजी।

riporṭ, nīrā ne somvār ko bhejī.

As for the report, Neera sent it on Monday.

Additively focused sender

Context: Ravi sent the report, and the speaker adds that Neera did so as well.

रिपोर्ट सोमवार को नीरा ने भी भेजी।

riporṭ somvār ko nīrā ne bhī bhejī.

Neera too sent the report on Monday.

The given object and time occur early; नीरा ने भी occupies the late focus position. The particle follows ergative ने because the entire marked subject is added.

Marked postverbal addition

Context: In spontaneous speech, the speaker remembers after the predicate that the report belongs to the added set of documents.

नीरा ने सोमवार को भेजी, रिपोर्ट भी।

nīrā ne somvār ko bhejī, riporṭ bhī.

Neera sent it on Monday—the report too. (informal afterthought)

The pause makes रिपोर्ट भी an afterthought linked to the omitted object position. Without that intonational break, the order is not neutral. The four versions share a core event but package topic, addition, and repair differently.

Paired भी...भी means “both...and”

Repeating भी adds each contrasted member to the same proposition:

रीना भी आएगी और सीमा भी आएगी।

rīnā bhī āegī aur sīmā bhī āegī.

Both Rina and Seema will come.

Shared material is often omitted from the first or second conjunct when recoverable:

इस योजना से समय भी बचेगा और पैसा भी।

is yojnā se samay bhī bacegā aur paisā bhī.

This plan will save both time and money.

Masculine singular बचेगा is overt with the first conjunct; the second is an elliptical parallel. This construction adds both alternatives. It does not mean “even time” unless context supplies a scale of surprise.

Additive भी can become scalar “even”

When one alternative is less expected than the others, addition creates a scalar reading:

इतनी तेज़ बारिश में बच्चे भी बाहर निकल गए।

itnī tez bāriś meṃ bacce bhī bāhar nikal gae.

Even the children went outside in such heavy rain.

Context presents children as an unlikely group to go outside. The particle itself still adds them to a set; surprise orders that set on a scale.

Prosody matters. Strong prominence on बच्चे भी supports “even the children,” while a calm continuation after mentioning adults supports “the children too.” Written English must choose, but the Hindi string can permit both until context resolves it.

भी under negation

With a negative predicate, भी often means “either” or strengthens a scalar negative:

अमन नहीं आया, और रीना भी नहीं आई।

aman nahīṃ āyā, aur rīnā bhī nahīṃ āī.

Aman didn't come, and Rina didn't come either.

बैठक में एक सदस्य भी नहीं आया।

baiṭhak meṃ ek sadasya bhī nahīṃ āyā.

Not even one member came to the meeting.

In एक...भी नहीं, the numeral defines the lowest possible quantity, so negation yields an emphatic zero. Agreement remains singular because the overt quantified NP is singular.

Indefinites plus भी can yield free-choice or negative-polarity expressions:

आप यहाँ कोई भी सीट चुन सकते हैं।

āp yahā̃ koī bhī sīṭ cun sakte haiṃ.

You may choose any seat here. (respectful)

मैंने किसी को भी नहीं बुलाया।

maĩne kisī ko bhī nahīṃ bulāyā.

I didn't invite anyone at all.

These meanings are constructional. कोई भी in an affirmative modal expresses unrestricted choice; किसी को भी नहीं under negation excludes every individual. Do not translate each भी separately as also.

Word order and agreement remain independent

An additively focused object can be fronted, but it keeps its case and agreement status:

नई कुर्सियाँ भी समिति ने खरीद लीं।

naī kursiyā̃ bhī samiti ne xarīd līṃ.

The committee bought the new chairs too. (chairs as added object topic)

Unmarked feminine plural कुर्सियाँ controls standalone लीं despite being fronted. If the object bears को, it cannot control merely because भी makes it prominent.

उस पुरानी मशीन को भी समिति ने बेच दिया।

us purānī maśīn ko bhī samiti ne bec diyā.

The committee sold that old machine too.

Feminine मशीन को भी is marked and ineligible, so बेच दिया is default masculine singular. Focus prominence never replaces the agreement hierarchy.

Common Mistakes

1. Placing भी before a case marker

❌ मोहन ने रीना भी को बुलाया।

Incorrect — भी follows the complete object phrase रीना को.

✅ मोहन ने रीना को भी कल बुलाया।

mohan ne rīnā ko bhī kal bulāyā.

Mohan called Rina too yesterday.

2. Using भी for exclusive “only”

❌ रीना भी आएगी।

Wrong for ‘Only Rina will come’ — भी means Rina in addition to someone else.

✅ रीना ही शाम को आएगी।

rīnā hī śām ko āegī.

Only Rina will come in the evening.

3. Splitting a compound postposition

❌ बच्चों के भी लिए मिठाई खरीदी।

Incorrect — के लिए is one compound postposition; भी follows the whole phrase.

✅ बच्चों के लिए भी ताज़ी मिठाई खरीदी।

baccoṃ ke lie bhī tāzī miṭhāī xarīdī.

Fresh sweets were bought for the children too.

4. Reading free-choice कोई भी as “someone too”

❌ आप भी कोई किताब पढ़ सकते हैं।

Incorrect for ‘You may read any book’ — this adds आप to a set of readers; it does not give कोई a free-choice reading.

✅ आप कोई भी हिंदी किताब चुन सकते हैं।

āp koī bhī hindī kitāb cun sakte haiṃ.

You may choose any Hindi book. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

  • भी follows the complete constituent in its scope, after ने, को, or a compound postposition.
  • Plain addition presupposes another true alternative; scalar “even” adds an unexpectedly ranked alternative.
  • Repeated भी...भी coordinates additions, while एक भी नहीं and किसी को भी नहीं strengthen negation.
  • कोई भी can express free choice under a modal and cannot be translated word by word as “someone also.”
  • Topic fronting and focus do not change case or agreement; they only reshape how alternatives enter the discourse.
