भी (bhī) and ही (hī) are invariant focus particles, not ordinary manner or time adverbs. भी adds an alternative—“also, too,” and sometimes “even.” ही excludes alternatives or identifies an exact one—“only, precisely, just.” Their position is their grammar: the particle normally follows the word or phrase whose alternatives are being added, excluded, or singled out. The later additive-focus page extends this foundation to discourse-driven word order.
Additive भी and restrictive ही
आरव भी कल आएगा।
ārav bhī kal āegā.
Aarav will also come tomorrow.
आरव ही कल आएगा।
ārav hī kal āegā.
Only Aarav will come tomorrow.
In both sentences the particle follows आरव, so people form the relevant alternative set. भी adds Aarav to other expected visitors; ही says that Aarav, rather than another person, is the visitor. English often places also before the verb and too at the end, but copying those positions into Hindi obscures scope.
| Focused constituent | With भी | With ही |
|---|---|---|
| person | रीमा भी “Rima too” | रीमा ही “only Rima” |
| time | आज भी “today too/still today” | आज ही “today itself / today, not later” |
| place | यहाँ भी “here too” | यहीं “right here / here specifically” |
| postpositional phrase | मेरे साथ भी “with me too” | मेरे साथ ही “only/precisely with me” |
| predicate | फ़ोन भी किया “also called” | कर ही दिया “did it after all/decisively” |
The English gloss of ही varies because exclusion can target identity, time, location, or action. The stable rule is positional scope, not a single translation.
A scope-shift set
Moving the particle through one clause creates different claims while leaving the basic event unchanged.
सना भी आज आई।
sanā bhī āj āī.
Sana too came today. (additional person)
सना आज भी आई।
sanā āj bhī āī.
Sana came today too. (additional day; often ‘again today’)
सना आज ही आई।
sanā āj hī āī.
Sana came today itself / only today. (not earlier or later)
सना ही आज आई।
sanā hī āj āī.
It was Sana who came today. (not someone else)
This is focus in the strict grammatical sense: speakers evoke alternatives and say how the asserted constituent relates to them. भी and ही do not change gender, number, or case, and they do not replace ordinary adjective or verb agreement.
Particles with case markers and postpositions
With simple case markers and postpositions such as ने, को, से, and में, the particle normally follows the marker: रीना ने ही, मोहित को भी, मुझसे ही. Compound postpositions allow a finer contrast. मेरे ही साथ narrowly singles out “me,” while मेरे साथ ही places focus after the complete “with me” phrase; context often makes their translations overlap.
रीना ने ही यह चिट्ठी लिखी।
rīnā ne hī yah ciṭṭhī likhī.
It was Rina who wrote this letter.
मैंने मोहित को भी संदेश भेजा।
maĩne mohit ko bhī sandeś bhejā.
I sent Mohit a message too.
वह मेरे साथ ही वापस जाएगी।
vah mere sāth hī vāpas jāegī.
She will go back with me specifically.
The perfective verb लिखी agrees with feminine object चिट्ठी, not with the focused ने-marked agent. The particle has no agreement features. Likewise, जाएगी is feminine singular because its subject is वह, not because मेरे साथ ही has any feminine marking.
Forms such as मुझसे ही and उसमें भी are therefore better models than an abstract instruction to put a particle “after the noun.” With a compound expression, first decide whether the intended focus is the embedded noun or the complete postpositional phrase.
भी: addition, “even,” and negative minimums
Ordinary भी adds a parallel item or action.
उसने चाय बनाई और नाश्ता भी तैयार किया।
usne cāy banāī aur nāśtā bhī taiyār kiyā.
She made tea and also prepared breakfast.
When the focused alternative is unexpected or low on a likelihood scale, भी receives an “even” reading.
यह निर्देश बच्चा भी समझ जाएगा।
yah nirdeś baccā bhī samajh jāegā.
Even a child will understand this instruction.
In negative clauses, एक भी, ज़रा भी, and बिल्कुल भी exclude even the smallest member or degree.
आज एक भी बस समय पर नहीं आई।
āj ek bhī bas samay par nahīṃ āī.
Not a single bus arrived on time today.
मुझे ज़रा भी भूख नहीं है।
mujhe zarā bhī bhūkh nahīṃ hai.
I'm not even slightly hungry.
The negative meaning comes from नहीं; भी expands the alternatives down to a minimum and lets negation rule all of them out. This also explains why कभी भी, कोई भी, and कुछ भी can develop “ever/anyone/anything” or free-choice readings depending on the clause.
ही: restriction, exactness, and decisive completion
After a time, place, number, or description, ही often selects an exact value.
बैठक तीन बजे ही शुरू होगी।
baiṭhak tīn baje hī śurū hogī.
The meeting will start at three precisely.
ट्रेन रुकने के बाद ही उतरिए।
ṭren rukne ke bād hī utarie.
Get off only after the train has stopped.
With a verb plus a compatible vector, ही can emphasize that an action was carried through despite hesitation, delay, or opposition.
बहुत सोचने के बाद उसने नौकरी छोड़ ही दी।
bahut socne ke bād usne naukrī choṛ hī dī.
After a lot of thought, she finally did quit the job.
This is not freely generated by inserting ही anywhere. छोड़ ही दी has a natural discourse setup: quitting was contemplated or resisted and then decisively occurred. The light verb देना contributes completion here; it is not an interchangeable synonym of simple छोड़ना.
Fused spellings and focused deictics
With a small set of common demonstrative and locative forms, ही is written as part of a conventional fused form:
| Base | Focused form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| यह | यही | this very one / exactly this |
| वह | वही | that same one / exactly that |
| यहाँ | यहीं | right here |
| वहाँ | वहीं | right there |
| तब | तभी | only then / just then |
यही वह किताब है जिसकी मुझे तलाश थी।
yahī vah kitāb hai jiskī mujhe talāś thī.
This is the very book I was looking for.
Do not generalize fusion to every phrase: write रीना ही, आज ही, मेरे लिए ही with spaces. Orthographic convention, not a different agreement rule, licenses the fused forms above.
Focus particles are not degree adverbs
Unlike बहुत or काफ़ी, focus particles do not place a property higher on a scale. In the frequent sequence बहुत ही अच्छा, ही emphasizes the already high degree expressed by बहुत; it does not itself mean “very.”
यह आपके लिए बहुत ही अच्छा मौक़ा है।
yah āpke lie bahut hī acchā mauqā hai.
This is a really excellent opportunity for you.
Hindi also attaches particles to lexical and phrasal adverbials: अक्सर ही “very regularly/invariably in the relevant context,” ध्यान से ही “only carefully/by that careful means,” यहाँ भी “here too.” This differs from English -ly: Hindi recruits adjective forms, oblique nouns, postpositional phrases, and fixed expressions as adverbials, while भी/ही operate one level higher by organizing alternatives around any of those constituents.
Natural conversational uses
मैं आज ही भेज देता हूँ, आप चिंता मत कीजिए।
maĩ āj hī bhej detā hū̃, āp cintā mat kījie.
I'll send it today; please don't worry. (male speaker)
This everyday promise uses आज ही to exclude delay beyond today. Without ही, आज भेज देता हूँ merely places the sending today; the particle makes the deadline contrastive and reassuring.
Common Mistakes
Copying sentence-final English “too”
❌ रीना कल आएगी भी।
Incorrect as the neutral translation of ‘Rina will come tomorrow too’; final भी gives marked predicate focus.
✅ रीना कल भी आएगी।
rīnā kal bhī āegī.
Rina will come tomorrow too.
Putting the particle before its focus
❌ भी मोहन बैठक में था।
Incorrect neutral order — भी follows मोहन when Mohan is the added person.
✅ मोहन भी बैठक में था।
mohan bhī baiṭhak meṃ thā.
Mohan was also at the meeting.
Splitting a simple postpositional form
❌ उसने मुझ भी से बात की।
Incorrect — the simple postposition forms मुझसे first, and भी follows that complete form.
✅ उसने मुझसे भी बात की।
usne mujhse bhī bāt kī.
She spoke with me too.
Confusing addition with restriction
❌ आज भी रिपोर्ट भेजिए।
Incorrect for ‘send the report today itself’; आज भी means today too/still today.
✅ आज ही रिपोर्ट भेजिए।
āj hī riporṭ bhejie.
Send the report today itself, without delaying it.
Letting focus override ordinary agreement
❌ रीना ही कल आया था।
Incorrect — ही is invariant and does not block feminine agreement.
✅ रीना ही कल आई थी।
rīnā hī kal āī thī.
It was Rina who came yesterday.
Key Takeaways
- भी adds an alternative or includes an unexpected minimum; ही restricts alternatives or identifies an exact one.
- The particle follows its focus, including the full case-marked or postpositional phrase.
- Moving the particle changes scope, not agreement: सना भी आज, सना आज भी, and सना आज ही make different claims.
- Focus particles can attach to lexical adverbs and complex adverbials, but they are not themselves English-style manner or degree adverbs.
