किसी भी and कोई भी free choice

कोई भी koī bhī and किसी भी kisī bhī often mean “any,” “anyone,” or “whichever,” with no relevant option excluded. Use direct कोई भी where ordinary कोई is direct; use oblique किसी भी before ने, को, से, में, पर, or a possessive postposition.

The particle भी broadens the alternatives. Compare कोई किताब “some unspecified book” with कोई भी किताब “any book whatsoever.” This free-choice reading is especially natural with permission, ability, possibility, generic statements, and instructions.

Direct and oblique paradigm

FunctionFormExample phrase
direct pronounकोई भीकोई भी आ सकता है
direct determinerकोई भी + nounकोई भी रास्ता
ergativeकिसी भी ... नेकिसी भी सदस्य ने
recipient/objectकिसी भी ... कोकिसी भी कर्मचारी को
source/instrumentकिसी भी ... सेकिसी भी दुकान से
possessiveकिसी भी ... का/की/केकिसी भी शहर का नक्शा

कोई भी इस कार्यक्रम में भाग ले सकता है।

koī bhī is kāryakram meṃ bhāg le saktā hai.

Anyone can take part in this program.

आप किसी भी काउंटर से टिकट ले सकते हैं।

āp kisī bhī kāuṇṭar se ṭikaṭ le sakte haiṃ.

You can get a ticket from any counter. (respectful)

The second phrase is oblique because से follows it. कोई भी काउंटर से is not the standard case pattern.

💡
Remove bhī first to find the stem: direct koī stays koī bhī; oblique kisī stays kisī bhī before a case marker.

Free choice versus an unspecified member

मुझे कोई आसान किताब चाहिए।

mujhe koī āsān kitāb cāhie.

I need an easy book. (the identity is unspecified)

आप कोई भी आसान किताब चुन सकते हैं।

āp koī bhī āsān kitāb cun sakte haiṃ.

You may choose any easy book. (every suitable option is allowed)

Bare कोई asserts or seeks an unspecified member. कोई भी opens the whole set of eligible members. English often uses any for both meanings, so the modal environment and भी matter more than the English word alone.

An imperative also licenses free choice:

रास्ते में किसी भी दुकान पर रुक जाना।

rāste meṃ kisī bhī dukān par ruk jānā.

Stop at any shop on the way. (informal instruction)

Definiteness of the domain, not of the choice

A demonstrative or partitive phrase can identify the set while leaving the selected member open.

इनमें से कोई भी फ़ाइल खोल लीजिए।

inmeṃ se koī bhī fāil khol lījie.

Open any one of these files. (respectful)

वह नीली फ़ाइल खोलिए।

vah nīlī fāil kholie.

Open that blue file. (one specific file)

इनमें से makes the domain definite: both speakers can identify the files. कोई भी keeps the choice non-specific. In the second sentence, वह नीली फ़ाइल itself is specific. Hindi therefore separates discourse definiteness from free-choice specificity without dedicated articles.

Agreement with singular and plural choices

With one unrestricted member, agreement follows the singular noun and its gender.

कोई भी लड़की यह काम कर सकती है।

koī bhī laṛkī yah kām kar saktī hai.

Any girl can do this work.

कोई भी छात्र आवेदन कर सकता है।

koī bhī chātr āvedan kar saktā hai.

Any student can apply.

For an unrestricted choice of several members, a number follows कोई भी, and the noun and predicate are plural where morphology shows it.

आप कोई भी दो तारीख़ें चुन सकते हैं।

āp koī bhī do tārīxeṃ cun sakte haiṃ.

You may choose any two dates. (respectful)

Hindi needs no obligatory classifier between दो and तारीख़ें. The construction selects any two-member subset; full numeral formation belongs in Numbers and Measurement.

Negation changes the interpretation

In a positive permission, कोई भी means unrestricted choice. Under negation, the same sequence often becomes an emphatic negative-polarity expression: “not any” or “no.”

आप कोई भी रंग चुन सकते हैं।

āp koī bhī raṅg cun sakte haiṃ.

You may choose any color. (respectful permission)

मैंने कोई भी रंग नहीं चुना।

maĩne koī bhī raṅg nahīṃ cunā.

I did not choose any color at all.

The negative sentence does not grant free choice; नहीं takes scope over the existential alternatives. See the dedicated page on negation and quantifier scope.

Negative imperatives behave similarly:

किसी भी बटन को मत दबाना।

kisī bhī baṭan ko mat dabānā.

Don't press any button. (informal prohibition)

Scope across another quantifier

हर कर्मचारी किसी भी प्रबंधक से सलाह ले सकता है।

har karmacārī kisī bhī prabandhak se salāh le saktā hai.

Every employee may seek advice from any manager.

The free-choice set falls inside the distribution over employees: each employee may choose a manager independently. A specific उस प्रबंधक से would instead hold one identifiable manager constant.

कोई भी, कुछ भी, and जो भी

Stand-alone कोई भी favors persons; कुछ भी favors things, content, or actions. जो भी means “whatever/whoever” and builds a free relative rather than a simple noun phrase.

आप कुछ भी पूछ सकते हैं; जो भी जानकारी मेरे पास होगी, मैं दे दूँगा।

āp kuch bhī pūch sakte haiṃ; jo bhī jānkārī mere pās hogī, maĩ de dū̃gā.

You may ask anything; whatever information I have, I'll give it to you. (respectful, male speaker)

These forms overlap in English translation, but their Hindi syntax differs. Do not select among them by the English word any alone.

Common Mistakes

1. Using direct कोई before a postposition

❌ आप कोई भी दुकान से दवा ले सकते हैं।

Incorrect: से requires oblique किसी भी.

✅ आप किसी भी दुकान से दवा ले सकते हैं।

āp kisī bhī dukān se davā le sakte haiṃ.

You may buy the medicine from any shop. (respectful)

2. Using oblique किसी as a direct subject

❌ किसी भी यहाँ बैठ सकता है।

Incorrect: the direct pronominal subject is कोई भी.

✅ कोई भी यहाँ बैठ सकता है।

koī bhī yahā̃ baiṭh saktā hai.

Anyone can sit here.

3. Translating “every” as free-choice any

❌ कोई भी कर्मचारी रोज़ नौ बजे आता है।

Incorrect for the habitual claim ‘every employee’: कोई भी means any eligible employee, not universal attendance.

✅ हर कर्मचारी रोज़ नौ बजे आता है।

har karmacārī roz nau baje ātā hai.

Every employee comes at nine each day.

4. Making a multi-member choice singular

❌ कोई भी दो तारीख़ चुन लीजिए।

Incorrect: after दो, count noun तारीख़ needs plural तारीख़ें.

✅ कोई भी दो तारीख़ें चुन लीजिए।

koī bhī do tārīxeṃ cun lījie.

Choose any two dates. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

  • Use direct कोई भी and oblique किसी भी according to case.
  • Positive modal and imperative contexts license unrestricted free choice.
  • Under negation, the same forms usually mean “not any” or emphatic “none.”
  • A domain can be definite while the selected member remains non-specific: इनमें से कोई भी.
