जो भी free relatives

Hindi जो भी builds a free relative: a clause that itself identifies a person, thing, or set without an overt head noun. Depending on context, it means “whoever,” “whatever,” “anything that,” or “all that.” The particle भी widens the choice beyond one already identified referent; the rest of the sentence then says what holds for whichever referent qualifies.

From a definite relative to a free relative

Compare ordinary जो…वह with जो भी:

जो कर्मचारी पहले पहुँचा, वह दरवाज़ा खोल देगा।

jo karmacārī pahle pahũcā, vah darvāzā khol degā.

The employee who arrived first will open the door.

The noun कर्मचारी supplies an overt head and वह retrieves one identifiable person. With no head noun and with भी, the relative clause ranges over anyone meeting the condition:

जो भी पहले पहुँचेगा, वह दरवाज़ा खोल देगा।

jo bhī pahle pahũcegā, vah darvāzā khol degā.

Whoever arrives first will open the door.

Conversational Hindi normally uses वो instead of written वह:

जो भी पहले पहुँचेगा, वो मुझे फ़ोन कर देगा।

jo bhī pahle pahũcegā, vo mujhe fon kar degā.

Whoever arrives first will give me a call. (informal)

The difference is register, not grammar: वह is standard in careful writing and formal speech; वो is the ordinary conversational form.

💡
Do not translate भी separately as “also.” After a relative form, it widens the variable: जो “the one who/that,” जो भी “whoever/whatever.”

Human, nonhuman, and proposition readings

Bare जो भी does not encode human versus nonhuman reference. The predicate and discourse supply the interpretation.

जो भी बाहर इंतज़ार कर रहा है, उसे अंदर बुला लो।

jo bhī bāhar intazār kar rahā hai, use andar bulā lo.

Invite whoever is waiting outside in. (informal)

The progressive masculine singular suggests a male or unspecified individual. In another context, जो भी denotes things:

फ़्रिज में जो भी बचा है, उसे दोपहर के खाने में इस्तेमाल कर लो।

frij meṃ jo bhī bacā hai, use dopahar ke khāne meṃ istemāl kar lo.

Use whatever is left in the fridge for lunch. (informal)

It can also refer to content—a claim, event, or message rather than a physical object:

बैठक में जो भी तय हुआ, उसकी लिखित पुष्टि आज भेजी जाएगी।

baiṭhak meṃ jo bhī tay huā, uskī likhit puṣṭi āj bhejī jāegī.

Written confirmation of whatever was decided at the meeting will be sent today. (formal)

English requires whoever versus whatever; Hindi commonly lets one form cover both and marks the referent through agreement, case, and meaning.

Universal and free-choice interpretations

The same form can have a universal reading, “everyone/everything that,” especially when the main clause distributes over all qualifying members:

जो भी मेहमान आए, सबको चाय दी गई।

jo bhī mehmān āe, sabko cāy dī gaī.

Every guest who came was given tea.

Here plural आए and सबको make the set reading explicit. A hypothetical or directive environment favors free choice:

तुम जो भी चुनो, रसीद सँभालकर रखना।

tum jo bhī cuno, rasīd sãbhālkar rakhnā.

Whatever you choose, keep the receipt safe. (informal)

The embedded subjunctive चुनो leaves the choice open. The construction does not itself say whether one item or several will be chosen; the event and context settle that.

Negation often produces a concessive “no matter what” interpretation:

वह जो भी कहे, मैं बिना जाँच के बात नहीं मानूँगी।

vah jo bhī kahe, maĩ binā jā̃c ke bāt nahīṃ mānū̃gī.

Whatever he or she says, I will not believe it without checking. (female speaker)

The correlate need not be वह

An overt correlative is clearest when the free relative is long or when its case in the main clause must be stated. But Hindi chooses the correlate required by the main clause, not a memorized जो भी…वह formula.

जो भी यह रिपोर्ट पढ़ेगा, उसे आँकड़ों की सीमा समझनी होगी।

jo bhī yah riporṭ paṛhegā, use ā̃kaṛoṃ kī sīmā samajhnī hogī.

Whoever reads this report will have to understand the limitations of the data. (formal)

The free relative is the unmarked subject of पढ़ेगा, but its resumed role is experiencer with को, so the main clause uses उसे. Different roles, different case.

जो भी सुझाव उपयोगी लगे, उस पर अगली बैठक में चर्चा करेंगे।

jo bhī sujhāv upyogī lage, us par aglī baiṭhak meṃ carcā kareṅge.

We will discuss whichever suggestion seems useful at the next meeting.

The main predicate चर्चा करना selects पर, yielding उस पर. If the main clause applies to the whole set, सब / सभी may be a better resumption than singular वह.

💡
Assign case twice: first inside the relative clause, then inside the main clause. The free relative can be जो in one clause and resume as उसे, उससे, उस पर, उसके लिए, or सबको in the other.

Omission and integration

When the free relative itself fills the main-clause object slot, no resumptive expression is required:

तुम्हें जो भी चाहिए, ले लो।

tumheṃ jo bhī cāhie, le lo.

Take whatever you need. (informal)

This is a headless, integrated free relative: जो भी चाहिए functions like a noun phrase meaning “whatever is needed.” In a short sentence the zero object of ले लो is immediately recoverable. Adding वह would sound needlessly stiff; adding उसे is possible when contrast or clarity calls for it.

जो भी आपने भेजा था, मैंने उसे ध्यान से पढ़ लिया।

jo bhī āpne bhejā thā, maĩne use dhyān se paṛh liyā.

I carefully read everything you had sent. (respectful)

The overt उसे is natural because the first clause is complete and the second explicitly resumes its object.

जो कोई and कोई भी

जो कोई is a more formal or literary variant meaning “whoever,” normally restricted to people:

जो कोई इस पद के लिए आवेदन करे, उसे नियम पढ़ने चाहिए।

jo koī is pad ke lie āvedan kare, use niyam paṛhne cāhie.

Whoever applies for this post should read the rules. (formal)

In ordinary conversation, जो भी is more natural. कोई भी differs syntactically: it is an indefinite noun phrase “anyone/any,” not a relative clause opener.

कोई भी यह फ़ॉर्म भर सकता है, लेकिन जो भी भरे, वह सही जानकारी दे।

koī bhī yah form bhar saktā hai, lekin jo bhī bhare, vah sahī jānkārī de.

Anyone can fill out this form, but whoever does so should provide correct information. (formal)

The first कोई भी occupies an argument position directly. The second जो भी introduces a dependent clause and is resumed by वह.

The larger correlative series

Hindi extends the j-series productively: जहाँ भी “wherever,” जब भी “whenever,” जैसा भी “whatever kind,” जितना भी “however much,” and जिस तरह भी “in whatever way.”

जहाँ भी काम मिले, वहाँ रहने की व्यवस्था पहले देख लेना।

jahā̃ bhī kām mile, vahā̃ rahne kī vyavasthā pahle dekh lenā.

Wherever you find work, check the housing arrangements first. (informal)

जितना भी समय लगे, काम ठीक से पूरा होना चाहिए।

jitnā bhī samay lage, kām ṭhīk se pūrā honā cāhie.

However long it takes, the work should be completed properly.

This productive family links person, thing, place, time, manner, quality, and quantity. Learning it as a system is more powerful than memorizing जो as a single word meaning who. The किसी भी and कोई भी free-choice page contrasts the corresponding indefinite forms.

A proverb-like pattern

जो भी बोओगे, वही काटोगे।

jo bhī booge, vahī kāṭoge.

Whatever you sow, that is what you will reap. (proverb-like, familiar or generic plural)

Object-like जो भी leaves the thing sown unrestricted, while emphatic वही resumes it as the thing reaped. The generic future describes a regular consequence rather than one predicted event.

Common Mistakes

1. Inserting an extra pronoun inside the relative clause

❌ जो भी व्यक्ति वह पहले पहुँचे, उसे चाबी देना।

Incorrect — जो भी व्यक्ति already supplies the relative-clause subject; वह cannot be inserted beside it.

✅ जो भी व्यक्ति पहले पहुँचे, उसे चाबी देना।

jo bhī vyakti pahle pahũce, use cābī denā.

Give the key to whoever arrives first. (informal)

2. Copying the relative case into the main clause

❌ जो भी आवेदन भेजेगा, वह जवाब दिया जाएगा।

Incorrect — the recipient of दिया जाएगा requires को.

✅ जो भी आवेदन भेजेगा, उसे जवाब दिया जाएगा।

jo bhī āvedan bhejegā, use javāb diyā jāegā.

Whoever submits an application will be sent a response.

3. Using जो कि as a free-relative marker

❌ जो कि भी चाहिए, ले लो।

Incorrect — भी follows the relative form directly; जो कि does not create 'whatever.'

✅ जो भी चाहिए, ले लो।

jo bhī cāhie, le lo.

Take whatever you need. (informal)

4. Doubling an already complete correlate

❌ जो भी आए, वह सबको उसे अंदर भेजना।

Incorrect — वह and उसे compete as resumptions, and the intended instruction lacks a clear addressee.

✅ जो भी आए, उसे अंदर भेज देना।

jo bhī āe, use andar bhej denā.

Send whoever comes inside. (informal)

Key Takeaways

  • जो भी forms a headless relative meaning “whoever,” “whatever,” or “all that,” according to context.
  • वह is standard written resumption and वो conversational; local syntax may instead require उसे, उससे, उस पर, or सबको.
  • Subjunctive, future, negation, and generic contexts often favor free-choice or concessive readings.
  • कोई भी is an indefinite noun phrase, whereas जो भी opens a clause.
  • The pattern belongs to a productive series including जहाँ भी, जब भी, जैसा भी, जितना भी, and जिस तरह भी.
