जिस तरह–उस तरह manner

The pair जिस तरह…उस तरह means “in the way that…in that way.” It belongs to Hindi’s relative–correlative system: the relative phrase opens a value—in this case, a manner—and the correlative phrase retrieves it. The form is especially useful when the “way” is described by a complete clause rather than by a single adjective or adverb.

A manner variable opened and closed

In the neutral order, the जिस तरह clause comes first and the उस तरह clause follows:

जिस तरह तुमने पहले ग्राहक की शिकायत लिखी, उसी तरह बाकी शिकायतें भी लिखो।

jis tarah tumne pahle grāhak kī śikāyat likhī, usī tarah bākī śikāyateṃ bhī likho.

Write the remaining complaints in the same way you wrote the first customer's complaint. (informal)

जिस is the oblique singular form of जो, required because it modifies तरह inside a postpositional manner phrase. उस is the matching oblique demonstrative. उसी तरह includes emphatic ही: not merely “in that way,” but “in exactly that same way.” Plain उस तरह allows a looser resemblance.

जिस तरह आरव ने पहली फ़ाइल व्यवस्थित की, उस तरह बाकी फ़ाइलें भी रख दो।

jis tarah ārav ne pahlī fāil vyavasthit kī, us tarah bākī fāileṃ bhī rakh do.

Arrange the remaining files along the lines of how Aarav organized the first one. (informal)

The two clauses keep their own subjects, tense, case, and agreement. The pairing compares manners; it does not fuse the clauses grammatically.

💡
Read the construction as a question and answer: जिस तरह…? उस तरह “in which established way? in that way.” ही narrows the answer to exact identity: उसी तरह.

Correlative-first order

Hindi can put the main assertion first and add the model afterward. This order is common in instructions and evaluations, where the requested action is the discourse topic:

इस किनारे को उसी तरह मोड़िए जिस तरह चित्र में दिखाया गया है।

is kināre ko usī tarah moṛie jis tarah citr meṃ dikhāyā gayā hai.

Fold this edge exactly as shown in the picture. (polite/formal)

The final relative clause identifies the manner already announced by उसी तरह. English often uses a single as clause; Hindi’s paired structure makes the backward reference explicit.

हम उस तरह जल्दबाज़ी में फ़ैसला नहीं करेंगे जिस तरह पिछली समिति ने किया था।

ham us tarah jaldabāzī meṃ faislā nahīṃ kareṅge jis tarah pichlī samiti ne kiyā thā.

We will not make a rushed decision the way the previous committee did. (formal)

Long final relatives can feel heavy in conversation. Speakers often prefer the relative-first order, or replace the second clause with a shorter जैसे… comparison. Both orders are grammatical; information structure decides which sounds better.

Definite manner and free manner

Ordinary जिस तरह normally points to an identifiable way: a way demonstrated, observed, described, or inferable from the clause. Adding भी removes that uniqueness and yields “however / in whatever way.”

तुम जिस तरह भी समझाना चाहो, पहले उदाहरण ज़रूर देना।

tum jis tarah bhī samjhānā cāho, pahle udāharaṇ zarūr denā.

However you choose to explain it, be sure to give an example first. (informal)

No उस तरह is needed here because the main clause does not copy one selected manner; it holds across every permitted manner. A more explicit free-choice correlate is possible:

जिस तरह भी आपको सुविधा हो, उसी तरह दस्तावेज़ भेज दीजिए।

jis tarah bhī āpko suvidhā ho, usī tarah dastāvez bhej dījie.

Send the documents in whichever way is convenient for you. (polite)

Here उसी तरह refers to the manner that the addressee ends up choosing. The free-choice phrase supplies a range; context selects one member of that range.

Case and reference are local

Because तरह is feminine but frozen inside an adverbial phrase, जिस/उस are oblique forms rather than agreeing adjectives. Other participants in the two clauses receive their own local case:

जिस तरह से निदेशक ने कर्मचारियों से बात की, उस तरह से कर्मचारियों ने ग्राहकों से बात नहीं की।

jis tarah se nideśak ne karmacāriyoṃ se bāt kī, us tarah se karmacāriyoṃ ne grāhakoṃ se bāt nahīṃ kī.

The employees did not speak to the customers in the way the director spoke to the employees. (formal)

The relative clause has निदेशक ने as agent and कर्मचारियों से as interlocutor; the main clause assigns ने to कर्मचारियों and से to ग्राहकों. The matching manner phrases do not require matching case on their participants.

When the manner itself becomes a cause, instrument, or standard, the correlate can change shape:

जिस तरह से उसने सबके सामने सवाल उठाया, उससे माहौल असहज हो गया।

jis tarah se usne sabke sāmne savāl uṭhāyā, usse māhaul asahaj ho gayā.

The way he or she raised the question in front of everyone made the atmosphere uncomfortable.

उससे now means “from/because of that,” not simply “in that way.” Matching meaning matters more than mechanically repeating उस तरह.

The productive relative–correlative family

This is not an isolated idiom. Hindi builds a family of paired variables: person or thing जो…वह, place जहाँ…वहाँ, time जब…तब, quality जैसा…वैसा, quantity जितना…उतना, and manner जिस तरह…उस तरह.

जो तरीका सबको समझ में आए, वही अपनाएँगे; जिस तरह प्रशिक्षक बताएगा, उसी तरह काम करेंगे।

jo tarīqā sabko samajh meṃ āe, vahī apnāẽge; jis tarah praśikṣak batāegā, usī tarah kām kareṅge.

We will adopt whichever method everyone understands; we will work exactly as the instructor explains. (formal)

This example contains formal written जो…वही. Conversational Hindi commonly uses जो…वो:

जो तरीका आसान लगे, वो चुन लो और जिस तरह ठीक लगे, उस तरह कर लो।

jo tarīqā āsān lage, vo cun lo aur jis tarah ṭhīk lage, us tarah kar lo.

Choose whichever method seems easy and do it in whatever way feels right. (informal)

The first pair chooses an entity, तरीका; the second abstracts over the manner of acting. See the relative–correlative overview for the shared architecture.

💡
English the way can name either a method or a property. Hindi keeps useful distinctions: जिस तरह introduces a clausal manner, जिस तरीके से foregrounds method, and जैसा often compares quality or resemblance.

जिस तरह, जैसा, and जैसे कि

जिस तरह…उस तरह compares a detailed procedure or manner. जैसा…वैसा more readily compares kind, quality, or conformity, although their uses overlap.

जिस तरह उसने चाय बनाई, उसी तरह मैं भी बनाऊँगा।

jis tarah usne cāy banāī, usī tarah maĩ bhī banāū̃gā.

I will make tea in the same way he or she did. (male speaker)

मुझे जैसी चाय पसंद है, वैसी यहाँ नहीं मिलती।

mujhe jaisī cāy pasand hai, vaisī yahā̃ nahīṃ miltī.

I cannot get tea here of the kind I like.

जो कि is not an all-purpose Hindi equivalent of English which/that/as. It has discourse and appositive uses, especially in formal prose, but it does not replace the manner pair. For the quality branch, consult जैसा–वैसा manner and quality.

Register and style

जिस तरह…उसी तरह is neutral and common in conversation, journalism, and careful prose. जिस प्रकार…उसी प्रकार is (formal/academic) and frequent in argumentation; it may sound bureaucratic in casual talk.

जिस प्रकार तापमान बढ़ता है, उसी प्रकार दाब भी बढ़ता है।

jis prakār tāpmān baṛhtā hai, usī prakār dāb bhī baṛhtā hai.

As temperature increases, pressure also increases. (formal/academic)

Urdu-influenced जिस तरीक़े से…उसी तरीक़े से is also standard, not slang; it foregrounds “method” more concretely. जिस ढंग से…उसी ढंग से is neutral-to-formal and can carry approval or disapproval of someone’s conduct.

जिस ढंग से बात बिगड़ी है, उसी ढंग से अब उसे सँभालना संभव नहीं होगा।

jis ḍhaṅg se bāt bigṛī hai, usī ḍhaṅg se ab use sãbhālnā sambhav nahīṃ hogā.

Given the way the situation has deteriorated, it will no longer be possible to handle it by the same approach. (formal)

A conversational and proverb-like use

मीरा: तुमने दादी की खीर कैसे बनाई? नील: जिस तरह उन्होंने मुझे सिखाया था, उसी तरह।

mīrā: tumne dādī kī khīr kaise banāī? nīl: jis tarah unhoṃne mujhe sikhāyā thā, usī tarah.

Meera: How did you make Grandma's rice pudding? Neel: Exactly the way she taught me. (informal)

Hindi also uses the pair in compact proverbial parallels:

जिस तरह बोओगे, उसी तरह काटोगे।

jis tarah booge, usī tarah kāṭoge.

As you sow, so shall you reap. (proverb-like)

The future forms refer generically to consequences, not to one literal future harvest.

Common Mistakes

1. Repeating the relative form instead of supplying a correlate

❌ जिस तरह सीमा ने योजना समझाई, जिस तरह हम परियोजना चलाएँगे।

Incorrect as one paired comparison — the main clause repeats the relative form instead of closing it with उस तरह.

✅ जिस तरह सीमा ने योजना समझाई, हम परियोजना उसी तरह चलाएँगे।

jis tarah sīmā ne yojnā samjhāī, ham pariyojnā usī tarah calāẽge.

We will run the project in the way Seema explained the plan.

2. Treating the two clauses as if they required matching case

❌ जिस तरह प्रबंधक ने ग्राहकों से बात की, उस तरह कर्मचारी ग्राहकों से बात की।

Incorrect — the perfective transitive main-clause agent requires ने; in the correction, feminine singular की agrees with बात, not with कर्मचारियों.

✅ जिस तरह प्रबंधक ने ग्राहकों से बात की, उस तरह कर्मचारियों ने भी उनसे बात की।

jis tarah prabandhak ne grāhakoṃ se bāt kī, us tarah karmacāriyoṃ ne bhī unse bāt kī.

The employees spoke to them in the way the manager spoke to the customers.

3. Replacing the manner pair with indiscriminate जो कि

❌ तुम काम करो जो कि मैंने दिखाया।

Incorrect as a manner comparison — जो कि does not mean 'in the way that.'

✅ तुम काम उसी तरह करो जिस तरह मैंने दिखाया।

tum kām usī tarah karo jis tarah maĩne dikhāyā.

Do the work exactly the way I showed you. (informal)

4. Making जिस agree like an adjective

❌ जिसी तरह वह बोली, उसी तरह मैं बोली।

Incorrect — जिस तरह is invariant; feminine agreement belongs on the verb.

✅ जिस तरह वह बोली, उसी तरह मैं भी बोली।

jis tarah vah bolī, usī tarah maĩ bhī bolī.

I spoke the same way she did. (female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • जिस तरह opens a manner; उस तरह / उसी तरह resumes it, with ही marking exact correspondence.
  • Relative-first and correlative-first orders are both possible, while each clause keeps independent case, agreement, and tense.
  • जिस तरह भी creates free choice; a causal or instrumental main clause may resume the manner with उससे instead.
  • The construction is one branch of a larger person–place–time–manner–quantity–quality family.
  • Use neutral तरह in ordinary speech and formal प्रकार when the register genuinely calls for it.
