जितना–उतना degree and quantity

Hindi जितना…उतना maps one amount or degree onto another: “as much/many as…that much/many” or “the more… the more.” The forms agree like adjectives when they quantify a noun — जितना समय, जितनी चीनी, जितने लोग — but default masculine singular often measures an action, quality, or whole situation.

Quantity with an overt noun

The relative phrase establishes an amount; the correlative phrase gives the matching amount. With masculine mass or singular nouns, use जितना/उतना:

जितना समय तुम्हें चाहिए, उतना समय ले लो।

jitnā samay tumheṃ cāhie, utnā samay le lo.

Take as much time as you need. (informal)

With a feminine noun, both forms are feminine:

जितनी चीनी चाय में डालोगे, उतनी ही मिठास बढ़ेगी।

jitnī cīnī cāy meṃ ḍāloge, utnī hī miṭhās baṛhegī.

The more sugar you put in the tea, the more the sweetness will increase. (informal)

Here the first जितनी agrees with चीनी and the second उतनी with feminine मिठास. The two measured nouns can differ; each form agrees locally.

Counted masculine plural nouns use जितने/उतने:

जितने टिकट ऑनलाइन बिके, उतने ही टिकट खिड़की पर भी बिके।

jitne ṭikaṭ onlāin bike, utne hī ṭikaṭ khiṛkī par bhī bike.

As many tickets were sold at the counter as were sold online.

The two plural forms establish a transparent equality between the online and counter totals. Another simple quantity match is जितने टिकट चाहिए, उतने ले लीजिए “Take as many tickets as you need.”

💡
Agreement follows the measured noun, not a fixed dictionary form. Ask “how much/many of what?”: masculine singular or mass जितना, feminine जितनी, masculine plural जितने.

Proportional change: “the more…, the more…”

When each clause describes a changing degree, जितना…उतना creates a proportional relation:

जितना तुम अभ्यास करोगे, उतना तुम्हारा आत्मविश्वास बढ़ेगा।

jitnā tum abhyās karoge, utnā tumhārā ātmaviśvās baṛhegā.

The more you practice, the more your confidence will grow. (informal)

No overt noun follows जितना or उतना. Default masculine singular measures the degree of practicing and growing. The clauses need not contain the same predicate or subject.

बारिश जितनी तेज़ होती गई, सड़क पर भीड़ उतनी ही कम होती गई।

bāriś jitnī tez hotī gaī, saṛak par bhīṛ utnī hī kam hotī gaī.

As the rain grew heavier, the crowd on the road kept thinning.

Feminine जितनी agrees locally with बारिश, while feminine उतनी agrees locally with भीड़ and measures its corresponding decrease. ही emphasizes close proportionality.

किराया जितना बढ़ा है, सुविधाएँ उतनी नहीं बढ़ी हैं।

kirāyā jitnā baṛhā hai, suvidhāẽ utnī nahīṃ baṛhī haiṃ.

The facilities have not improved as much as the rent has increased.

This main-clause-like comparison distributes the pair around two topics. Masculine जितना agrees with the degree of किराया’s rise; feminine plural उतनी agrees with सुविधाएँ.

Equality, upper bounds, and contrast

उतना ही…जितना… presents equality, often with the correlative first:

इस काम में उतना ही धैर्य चाहिए जितना अनुभव।

is kām meṃ utnā hī dhairya cāhie jitnā anubhav.

This work requires just as much patience as experience.

Both धैर्य and अनुभव are masculine mass-like nouns. A negative can deny equality:

यह रास्ता उतना लंबा नहीं है जितना नक़्शे में लगता है।

yah rāstā utnā lambā nahīṃ hai jitnā naqśe meṃ lagtā hai.

This route isn't as long as it looks on the map.

English marks the standard with as; Hindi lets final जितना introduce the degree against which उतना नहीं is evaluated.

An upper-bound reading appears with जितना हो सके “as much as possible”:

आज जितना हो सके, उतना काम पूरा कर लो।

āj jitnā ho sake, utnā kām pūrā kar lo.

Finish as much work as possible today. (informal)

Here जितना हो सके supplies the maximum feasible degree, and उतना काम realizes it.

Case is computed locally

The two sets refer to corresponding numbers but can have different grammatical roles:

जितने लोगों ने पंजीकरण कराया था, उतने लोगों को सीट नहीं मिल सकी।

jitne logoṃ ne pañjīkaraṇ karāyā thā, utne logoṃ ko sīṭ nahīṃ mil sakī.

Seats could not be found for as many people as had registered. (formal)

The relative group is an ergative agent, जितने लोगों ने. The correlative group is a recipient/affected group, उतने लोगों को. Both determiners are plural oblique जितने/उतने, but the postpositions differ because each clause assigns its own case.

जिस हद तक टीम ने खर्च घटाया, उस हद तक सेवा की गुणवत्ता भी घटी।

jis had tak ṭīm ne kharc ghaṭāyā, us had tak sevā kī guṇvattā bhī ghaṭī.

Service quality declined to the extent that the team reduced expenditure. (formal)

The expanded case-marked pair जिस हद तक…उस हद तक is useful in analytical prose. It spells out the abstract scale that bare जितना…उतना leaves implicit.

Free amount with भी

Adding भी creates “however much/many” and removes any fixed upper value:

तुम जितना भी समझाओ, वह अभी अपना फ़ैसला नहीं बदलेगा।

tum jitnā bhī samjhāo, vah abhī apnā faislā nahīṃ badlegā.

However much you explain it, he will not change his decision right now. (informal)

जितनी भी शिकायतें मिली हैं, उन सभी की जाँच की जाएगी।

jitnī bhī śikāyateṃ milī haiṃ, un sabhī kī jā̃c kī jāegī.

All the complaints that have been received will be investigated. (formal)

The second example uses उन सभी rather than matching उतनी because the main clause refers to the whole definite set, not to an equal numerical measure. Correlatives need to match the intended meaning, not merely repeat a textbook pair.

Amount is not quality

Compare quantity जितना with kind or manner जैसा:

मुझे जितना खाना चाहिए था, मैंने उससे ज़्यादा खा लिया।

mujhe jitnā khānā cāhie thā, maĩne usse zyādā khā liyā.

I ate more than I should have.

This measures amount. By contrast, जैसा खाना मैं चाहता था means “the kind of food I wanted.” English as and like blur distinctions that Hindi makes overt. See जैसा–वैसा manner and quality for the quality branch.

The full relative–correlative family

Nominal जो…वह and informal जो…वो provide the core structural pattern:

जो बजट स्वीकृत हुआ है, वह अगले साल तक लागू रहेगा।

jo bajaṭ svīkrit huā hai, vah agle sāl tak lāgū rahegā.

The budget that has been approved will remain in effect until next year. (formal)

जो पैसे बचे हैं, वो सफ़र के लिए रख लो।

jo paise bace haiṃ, vo safar ke lie rakh lo.

Keep the money that's left for the trip. (informal)

This productive family specializes for place जहाँ…वहाँ, time जब…तब, quality जैसा…वैसा, and quantity जितना…उतना. जितना is therefore not an isolated comparative word; it opens an amount variable that उतना or another quantified expression resolves.

💡
Do not demand an overt उतना in every sentence. Hindi can close the amount slot with उससे ज़्यादा, कम, सभी, or context. Use उतना when equality or proportional correspondence is the point.

Conversation and proverb

निशा: कितना चावल बनाऊँ? कबीर: जितने लोग आ रहे हैं, उनके लिए जितना काफ़ी हो उतना बना लो।

niśā: kitnā cāval banāū̃? kabīr: jitne log ā rahe haiṃ, unke lie jitnā kāfī ho utnā banā lo.

Nisha: How much rice should I make? Kabir: Make enough for however many people are coming. (informal)

Interrogative कितना requests an amount; relative जितने/जितना builds it into a clause; उतना supplies the resulting quantity.

जितनी चादर हो, उतने ही पैर पसारो।

jitnī cādar ho, utne hī pair pasāro.

Stretch your legs only as far as your blanket allows — live within your means. (proverb)

Feminine जितनी agrees with चादर, while plural उतने agrees with पैर. The proverb is a compact demonstration of local agreement across the pair.

Common Mistakes

1. Using masculine forms with a feminine measured noun

❌ जितना मदद चाहिए, उतना मदद माँग लो।

Incorrect — मदद is feminine, so both quantity forms must be feminine.

✅ जितनी मदद चाहिए, उतनी मदद माँग लो।

jitnī madad cāhie, utnī madad mā̃g lo.

Ask for as much help as you need. (informal)

2. Confusing amount with kind

❌ जैसा पानी चाहिए, उतना गिलास में भर दो।

Mismatched — the intended meaning is an amount, not a kind of water.

✅ जितना पानी चाहिए, उतना गिलास में भर दो।

jitnā pānī cāhie, utnā gilās meṃ bhar do.

Fill the glass with as much water as is needed. (informal)

3. Copying case from one clause to the other

❌ जितने छात्रों ने फ़ॉर्म भरा, उतने छात्रों ने प्रमाणपत्र मिला।

Incorrect — the recipients in the main clause require को, not ने.

✅ जितने छात्रों ने फ़ॉर्म भरा, उतने छात्रों को प्रमाणपत्र मिला।

jitne chātroṃ ne form bharā, utne chātroṃ ko pramāṇpatr milā.

As many students as filled out the form received a certificate.

4. Using जो कि for a degree relation

❌ यह कमरा उतना बड़ा नहीं है जो कि लगता है।

Incorrect — degree comparison requires जितना, not English-style जो कि.

✅ यह कमरा उतना बड़ा नहीं है जितना लगता है।

yah kamrā utnā baṛā nahīṃ hai jitnā lagtā hai.

This room isn't as big as it looks.

Key Takeaways

  • जितना/जितनी/जितने and उतना/उतनी/उतने agree with the quantity-bearing noun.
  • Default masculine singular measures an action, property, or situation when no overt noun controls agreement.
  • The pair expresses equal quantity, proportional change, or degree comparison; भी adds an unrestricted “however much/many” reading.
  • Each clause assigns its own case, so corresponding groups can take different postpositions.
  • Hindi’s amount pair is one branch of a broader person–place–time–manner–quantity correlative system.
