Hindi pairs relative जहाँ “where” with correlative वहाँ “there”: जहाँ धूप आती है, वहाँ पौधे रखो “put the plants where sunlight comes in.” The first clause opens a place variable; the second points back to that place. This is the spatial member of the same system as जो…वह, not merely two unrelated adverbs.
The basic place pair
जहाँ सड़क मुड़ती है, वहाँ एक छोटा-सा मंदिर है।
jahā̃ saṛak muṛtī hai, vahā̃ ek choṭā-sā mandir hai.
There is a small temple where the road bends.
जहाँ सड़क मुड़ती है identifies a location by an event. वहाँ fills the location role in the main clause. English can say where the road bends once; Hindi makes the dependency especially transparent by marking both ends.
जहाँ तुमने गाड़ी खड़ी की थी, वहीं मेरा दफ़्तर है।
jahā̃ tumne gāṛī khaṛī kī thī, vahī̃ merā daftar hai.
My office is right where you parked the car. (informal)
Emphatic वहीं means “right there / in that very place.” Its nasalization belongs to the vowel: vahī̃, not vahīṅ.
Relative-first and correlative-first orders
The relative-first order sets the spatial frame before giving the main news:
जहाँ पहले कारखाना था, वहाँ अब बच्चों का पार्क बन गया है।
jahā̃ pahle kārxānā thā, vahā̃ ab baccoṃ kā pārk ban gayā hai.
Where there used to be a factory, a children's park has now been built.
The correlative may come first when the destination or main assertion is already topical:
हम वहीं रुकेंगे जहाँ नदी के पास साफ़ जगह मिलेगी।
ham vahī̃ rukeṅge jahā̃ nadī ke pās sāf jagah milegī.
We will stop right where we find a clean spot near the river.
Both orders are standard. Relative-first order often feels explanatory; main-clause-first order feels like a claim followed by spatial specification. In short conversation, वहाँ can be omitted when the verb or an overt noun phrase already supplies the spatial slot:
जहाँ जगह मिले, बैठ जाना।
jahā̃ jagah mile, baiṭh jānā.
Sit wherever you find space. (informal)
This has a free-choice interpretation: no single location has been identified in advance. The omitted main-clause correlate is recoverable from बैठ जाना.
Source, route, and boundary extensions
Spatial postpositions and particles build parallel pairs. जहाँ से…वहाँ से marks a source:
जहाँ से यह पगडंडी शुरू होती है, वहीं से जंगल की सीमा भी शुरू होती है।
jahā̃ se yah pagḍaṇḍī śurū hotī hai, vahī̃ se jaṅgal kī sīmā bhī śurū hotī hai.
The forest boundary begins at the very place where this footpath begins.
जहाँ तक…वहाँ तक marks an endpoint or extent:
जहाँ तक सड़क पक्की है, वहाँ तक बस जाती है।
jahā̃ tak saṛak pakkī hai, vahā̃ tak bas jātī hai.
The bus goes as far as the road is paved.
For a destination, colloquial Hindi can use जहाँ…वहाँ with a motion verb; the goal meaning comes from the verb:
जहाँ बाकी लोग जा रहे हैं, हम भी वहीं चलेंगे।
jahā̃ bākī log jā rahe haiṃ, ham bhī vahī̃ caleṅge.
We will go to the same place where everyone else is going.
Hindi does not need a separate word corresponding to English to where here. By contrast, an explicit source requires से, because “leave from” and “arrive at” are different spatial roles.
Definite place versus free relative
A plain जहाँ…वहाँ pair can identify one contextually definite place:
जहाँ हमने पहली बार चाय पी थी, वहाँ अब नई दुकान खुल गई है।
jahā̃ hamne pahlī bār cāy pī thī, vahā̃ ab naī dukān khul gaī hai.
A new shop has opened where we first had tea.
Adding भी creates an unrestricted “wherever” meaning:
जहाँ भी नेटवर्क मिलेगा, मैं तुम्हें संदेश भेज दूँगा।
jahā̃ bhī neṭvark milegā, maĩ tumheṃ sandeś bhej dū̃gā.
Wherever I get a signal, I'll send you a message. (male speaker, informal)
The main clause need not repeat वहाँ with a free relative, especially when its spatial role is obvious. जहाँ कहीं…वहाँ is a more emphatic or somewhat literary “wherever…there”:
जहाँ कहीं भी अन्याय हो, वहाँ आवाज़ उठाना ज़रूरी है।
jahā̃ kahī̃ bhī anyāy ho, vahā̃ āvāz uṭhānā zarūrī hai.
Wherever injustice occurs, it is necessary to speak up. (formal)
Named places and case-marked noun pairs
When the place is an overt noun, Hindi can use the broader जिस…उस paradigm instead of the adverbial pair:
जिस कमरे में प्रोजेक्टर लगा है, उसी कमरे में बैठक होगी।
jis kamre meṃ projekṭar lagā hai, usī kamre meṃ baiṭhak hogī.
The meeting will be in the same room in which the projector is installed.
This is a case-marked pair: both noun phrases take में because both happen to be locations. Case still comes from each local clause, not from mechanical matching. Compare:
जिस गाँव से बस चलती है, उस गाँव में मेरा दोस्त रहता है।
jis gā̃v se bas caltī hai, us gā̃v meṃ merā dost rahtā hai.
My friend lives in the village from which the bus departs.
The relative phrase has source से, while the main-clause phrase has location में. Matching reference does not require matching postpositions.
जहाँ in the larger family
For people or things, the same architecture appears as formal जो…वह and conversational जो…वो:
जो रास्ता कम भीड़ वाला है, वह स्टेशन तक जाता है।
jo rāstā kam bhīṛ vālā hai, vah sṭeśan tak jātā hai.
The road that is less crowded goes to the station. (neutral/formal)
जो कैफ़े नदी के पास है, वो आज बंद है।
jo kaife nadī ke pās hai, vo āj band hai.
The café by the river is closed today. (informal)
Place जहाँ…वहाँ, time जब…तब, manner जैसा…वैसा, and quantity जितना…उतना are productive siblings of that nominal pair. Learn the family as a mapping between two clauses, not as separate vocabulary lists. See the place-adverb paradigm for the demonstrative and interrogative forms outside relative clauses.
Conversation and proverb-like generalization
अमन: हम सामान कहाँ रखें? लीना: जहाँ बच्चों का हाथ न पहुँचे, वहीं रख दो।
aman: ham sāmān kahā̃ rakheṃ? līnā: jahā̃ baccoṃ kā hāth na pahũce, vahī̃ rakh do.
Aman: Where should we put the supplies? Leena: Put them right where the children cannot reach. (informal)
The question uses interrogative कहाँ; the answer opens a relative condition with जहाँ and closes it with emphatic वहीं.
जहाँ चाह, वहाँ राह।
jahā̃ cāh, vahā̃ rāh.
Where there is a will, there is a way. (proverb)
The proverb omits both copulas, as compact proverbs often do, but the spatial-correlative logic remains intact.
Common Mistakes
1. Mixing the interrogative and relative series
❌ कहाँ धूप आती है, वहाँ पौधे रखो।
Incorrect for 'wherever/where' — कहाँ asks a question; it does not open this relative pair.
✅ जहाँ धूप आती है, वहाँ पौधे रखो।
jahā̃ dhūp ātī hai, vahā̃ paudhe rakho.
Put the plants where sunlight comes in. (informal)
2. Dropping a required source marker
❌ जहाँ यह ट्रेन चली, वहाँ से दूसरी ट्रेन मिलेगी।
Incorrect for the intended source reading — the relative side also needs से.
✅ जहाँ से यह ट्रेन चली, वहाँ से दूसरी ट्रेन मिलेगी।
jahā̃ se yah ṭren calī, vahā̃ se dūsrī ṭren milegī.
Another train will be available from the place this train departed from.
3. Treating reference matching as case matching
❌ जिस शहर से वह पढ़ता है, उस शहर से उसका परिवार रहता है।
Incorrect — studying and living are locations here, not sources.
✅ जिस शहर में वह पढ़ता है, उस शहर में उसका परिवार रहता है।
jis śahar meṃ vah paṛhtā hai, us śahar meṃ uskā parivār rahtā hai.
His family lives in the city where he studies.
4. Inserting जो कि as an English-style where
❌ वह जगह जो कि हम मिले थे बहुत शांत थी।
Incorrect — the clause needs a locative relative, not subject-form जो कि.
✅ जिस जगह हम मिले थे, वह बहुत शांत थी।
jis jagah ham mile the, vah bahut śānt thī.
The place where we met was very quiet.
