यहाँ (yahā̃) means “here,” वहाँ (vahā̃) means “there,” and कहाँ (kahā̃) asks “where?” They are invariant place adverbs: they do not take gender, number, or case agreement. They can locate an event, serve as the predicate of a location statement, and combine with postpositions such as से “from” and तक “up to/as far as.”
A three-part deictic system
| Form | Function | Typical reference |
|---|---|---|
| यहाँ | proximal location | here, near the speaker or current center |
| वहाँ | distal location | there, away from that center or already mentioned |
| कहाँ | interrogative location | where? |
रीना आज यहाँ काम कर रही है।
rīnā āj yahā̃ kām kar rahī hai.
Rina is working here today.
मेरी चाबियाँ वहाँ रखी हैं।
merī cābiyā̃ vahā̃ rakhī haiṃ.
My keys are kept there.
आपका होटल कहाँ है?
āpkā hoṭal kahā̃ hai?
Where is your hotel?
In neutral event clauses, a place adverb normally precedes the verb phrase. With होना, it can be the locative predicate: होटल कहाँ है? Hindi normally leaves a wh-expression in the position occupied by the answer, unlike English, which moves where to the beginning. Clause-initial कहाँ आपका होटल है? is not the neutral translation of “Where is your hotel?”
The larger principles of information-driven reordering belong to adverb position in neutral clauses and the Word Order section. The reliable A2 pattern is subject – time – place – predicate.
Place before the event, not automatically at the end
हम कल वहाँ नई टीम से मिलेंगे।
ham kal vahā̃ naī ṭīm se mileṅge.
We will meet the new team there tomorrow.
बच्चे शाम को यहाँ क्रिकेट खेलते हैं।
bacce śām ko yahā̃ krikeṭ khelte haiṃ.
The children play cricket here in the evening.
English freely puts a short place phrase after the verb: “The children play cricket here.” Hindi's neutral predicate-final structure places यहाँ before क्रिकेट खेलते हैं. A right-dislocated place is possible as an afterthought in conversation, but it needs an appropriate pause and discourse context; it should not become the learner's default.
Adding source, endpoint, and emphasis
Because these are already place adverbs, bare यहाँ and वहाँ usually need no general locative postposition. Add a postposition only when it contributes a specific relation.
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| यहाँ से / वहाँ से / कहाँ से | from here / there / where |
| यहाँ तक / वहाँ तक / कहाँ तक | up to here / there / how far |
| यहाँ पर / वहाँ पर / कहाँ पर | at this/that/which place; often more explicit than the bare form |
| ठीक यहाँ / ठीक वहाँ | right here / exactly there |
| यहीं / वहीं | right here / right there, with focused ही |
यह बस यहाँ से हवाई अड्डे तक जाती है।
yah bas yahā̃ se havāī aḍḍe tak jātī hai.
This bus goes from here to the airport.
तुम कहाँ से आ रहे हो?
tum kahā̃ se ā rahe ho?
Where are you coming from?
टैक्सी सीधे वहाँ गई।
ṭaiksī sīdhe vahā̃ gaī.
The taxi went straight there.
With a directed motion verb such as जाना, bare वहाँ can supply the destination; Hindi does not add को merely because English has directional to. By contrast, वहाँ से explicitly marks a source and वहाँ तक an endpoint or limit.
आप यहीं बैठिए, मैं अभी आया।
āp yahīṃ baiṭhie, maĩ abhī āyā.
Please sit right here; I'll be right back. (said by a male speaker)
The final example is natural conversational Hindi. मैं अभी आया is literally past-shaped but idiomatically announces an immediate return. The location focus in यहीं tells the addressee not to move elsewhere.
यहाँ पर and वहाँ पर are common in speech and not wrong, but पर is often unnecessary when the deictic adverb alone expresses simple location. It becomes useful when speakers contrast sites or make the locative relation explicit.
Scope: moving भी changes the added alternative
Focus particles follow the constituent they affect. Compare the same event with two additive scopes:
अमन भी यहाँ काम करता है।
aman bhī yahā̃ kām kartā hai.
Aman also works here. (Aman is an additional worker)
अमन यहाँ भी काम करता है।
aman yahā̃ bhī kām kartā hai.
Aman works here too. (this is an additional workplace)
Similarly, अमन यहीं काम करता है says that Aman works right here or here specifically. ही is not a degree marker on the place; it narrows the relevant location alternatives.
Lexical place adverbs versus location phrases
English uses here, there, and where, but many English place adverbs ending in -ly have no one-word Hindi counterpart. Hindi frequently builds location adverbials from an oblique noun plus a postposition or compound postposition.
| Type | Hindi | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Lexical deictic adverb | यहाँ | here |
| Simple postpositional phrase | कमरे में | in the room |
| Simple postpositional phrase | मेज़ पर | on the table |
| Compound postpositional phrase | स्टेशन के पास | near the station |
| Reduplicated fixed adverbial | यहाँ-वहाँ | here and there |
| Idiomatic fixed adverbial | इधर-उधर | around / in different directions |
फ़ाइल ऊपर वाली दराज़ में है।
fāil ūpar vālī darāz meṃ hai.
The file is in the upper drawer.
काग़ज़ यहाँ-वहाँ मत छोड़ो।
kāġaz yahā̃-vahā̃ mat choṛo.
Don't leave papers lying around here and there.
In दराज़ में, the noun is governed by में; in स्टेशन के पास, स्टेशन is oblique before a compound postposition. By contrast, यहाँ itself does not acquire an oblique ending before से or तक.
यहाँ is not English existential “there”
English there has two jobs: it can point to a place, or it can be a dummy subject in “There are two chairs in the room.” Hindi does not need a dummy counterpart in the second use.
कमरे में दो कुर्सियाँ हैं।
kamre meṃ do kursiyā̃ haiṃ.
There are two chairs in the room.
Adding वहाँ would contribute a real deictic location: वहाँ कमरे में दो कुर्सियाँ हैं means roughly “There, in the room, there are two chairs,” appropriate only if that distant location is being contrasted.
Degree and precision of location
Ordinary degree words do not modify यहाँ as though location were a scalar adjective: बहुत यहाँ is impossible. Hindi instead expresses precision with ठीक, बिल्कुल, or focused ही, and expresses distance with scalar words such as बहुत दूर and काफ़ी पास.
टैक्सी बिल्कुल वहीं रुकी जहाँ हमने कहा था।
ṭaiksī bilkul vahīṃ rukī jahā̃ hamne kahā thā.
The taxi stopped at exactly the place we had specified.
दुकान यहाँ से काफ़ी दूर है।
dukān yahā̃ se kāfī dūr hai.
The shop is quite far from here.
Common Mistakes
Moving कहाँ to English-style clause-initial position
❌ कहाँ आपका बैग है?
Incorrect as the neutral question — Hindi normally keeps कहाँ in the answer position.
✅ आपका बैग कहाँ है?
āpkā baig kahā̃ hai?
Where is your bag?
Adding a made-up adverb ending
❌ वह यहाँली काम करती है।
Incorrect — Hindi does not add an equivalent of English -ly to यहाँ.
✅ वह यहाँ काम करती है।
vah yahā̃ kām kartī hai.
She works here.
Misplacing a focus particle
❌ भी यहाँ बस रुकती है।
Incorrect neutral order for ‘the bus stops here too’; भी must follow the location it focuses.
✅ बस यहाँ भी रुकती है।
bas yahā̃ bhī ruktī hai.
The bus stops here too.
Stacking locations after the finite verb
❌ मीरा रहती है यहाँ स्टेशन के पास।
Incorrect as neutral prose — this sounds like an unplanned right-dislocated afterthought.
✅ मीरा यहाँ स्टेशन के पास रहती है।
mīrā yahā̃ sṭeśan ke pās rahtī hai.
Mira lives here near the station.
Key Takeaways
- यहाँ, वहाँ, कहाँ are invariant place adverbs; they normally stand before the final predicate.
- Add से, तक, or पर only for the relation it contributes; plain location often needs no postposition.
- Particle placement controls scope: अमन भी यहाँ and अमन यहाँ भी answer different contrastive questions.
- Hindi also builds place adverbials with oblique nouns, postpositions, compound postpositions, and reduplicated fixed phrases.
