पर for surfaces locations and occasions

The postposition पर par places something on a surface or at a location construed as a point: मेज़ पर mez par “on/at the table,” स्टेशन पर sṭeśan par “at the station.” It also marks occasions, activity sites, media, and complements selected by certain predicates.

Its complement comes first and is oblique. English on is a useful starting point, but English at, in, and for also correspond to पर in particular Hindi expressions.

Surfaces and contact

Use पर when an object rests on, touches, or is directed toward a surface.

किताब मेज़ पर रख दो।

kitāb mez par rakh do.

Put the book on the table. (informal)

दीवार पर एक पुरानी तस्वीर लगी है।

dīvār par ek purānī tasvīr lagī hai.

An old picture is hanging on the wall.

The surface need not be horizontal. दीवार पर treats the wall as the supporting/contact surface.

Direct formWith पर
रास्ता rāstāरास्ते पर rāste par
दरवाज़ा darvāzāदरवाज़े पर darvāze par
कुर्सियाँ kursiyā̃कुर्सियों पर kursiyoṃ par
मेज़ें mezeṃमेज़ों पर mezoṃ par
💡
Par follows a complete oblique phrase: us purāne darvāze par. Do not attach it to a direct masculine -ā noun.

Location points and institutions

A station, doorway, counter, intersection, or stop is often conceptualized as a point rather than an interior.

हम स्टेशन पर आपका इंतज़ार करेंगे।

ham sṭeśan par āpkā intazār kareṅge.

We'll wait for you at the station.

कोई दरवाज़े पर खड़ा है।

koī darvāze par khaṛā hai.

Someone is standing at the door.

Institutional expressions are conventional. काम पर kām par means “at work/on duty,” whereas दफ़्तर में daftar meṃ emphasizes the office as a location or interior.

मीरा आज काम पर नहीं है, लेकिन उसके दफ़्तर में कोई मौजूद है।

mīrā āj kām par nahīṃ hai, lekin uske daftar meṃ koī maujūd hai.

Meera isn't at work today, but someone is in her office.

This contrast shows why English at cannot simply map to one Hindi postposition.

Occasions and event settings

पर can locate an action at an occasion or juncture: शादी पर śādī par “at/on the occasion of the wedding,” इस मौक़े पर is mauqe par “on this occasion,” ज़रूरत पड़ने पर zarūrat paṛne par “if/when the need arises.”

उसकी शादी पर हमने उसे एक घड़ी दी।

uskī śādī par hamne use ek ghaṛī dī.

We gave her a watch on the occasion of her wedding.

इस मौक़े पर मैं सबका धन्यवाद करना चाहता हूँ।

is mauqe par maĩ sabkā dhanyavād karnā cāhtā hū̃.

On this occasion, I would like to thank everyone. (formal)

Calendar days normally use को—सोमवार को—not पर. An event noun may use में when participation or internal activity is foregrounded: बैठक में चर्चा हुई “there was discussion in the meeting.” With बैठक पर, the intended relation would need a special context.

Media, channels, and devices

Hindi commonly uses पर for communication media and platforms: फ़ोन पर fon par, टीवी पर ṭīvī par, इंटरनेट पर iṇṭarneṭ par, वेबसाइट पर vebsāiṭ par.

मैंने यह ख़बर इंटरनेट पर पढ़ी।

maĩne yah xabar iṇṭarneṭ par paṛhī.

I read this news online.

हमने कल फ़ोन पर काफ़ी देर बात की।

hamne kal fon par kāfī der bāt kī.

We talked on the phone for quite a while yesterday.

These are conventional extensions of a location/activity-site meaning. English changes between on the internet and over the phone; Hindi retains पर.

Pronoun complements

Demonstratives use इस पर is par, उस पर us par, इन पर in par, and उन पर un par. Personal pronouns use oblique stems: मुझ पर mujh par, तुम पर tum par, आप पर āp par, हम पर ham par.

मुझ पर भरोसा रखो; मैं समय पर आ जाऊँगा।

mujh par bharosā rakho; maĩ samay par ā jāū̃gā.

Trust me; I'll arrive on time. (informal)

इस पर अपना नाम लिखिए और उसे मेज़ पर रख दीजिए।

is par apnā nām likhie aur use mez par rakh dījie.

Write your name on this and put it on the table. (polite)

Do not use citation मैं पर; neutral standard Hindi requires मुझ पर.

पर versus में

The simplest contrast is surface versus interior: मेज़ पर “on the table,” दराज़ में “in the drawer.” Point-like institutional locations favor पर, while enclosed locations/domains favor में; see में for containment and domains for the other side of the contrast.

काग़ज़ मेज़ पर नहीं, दराज़ में हैं।

kāġaz mez par nahīṃ, darāz meṃ haiṃ.

The papers aren't on the table; they're in the drawer.

But construal matters. स्कूल में means at/in school as an institution or building. स्कूल पर is not the general equivalent of English at school. Learn conventional location phrases, not just geometric rules.

💡
Use geometry as a starting point, then learn activity-site expressions whole: kām par, fon par, sṭeśan par. Conventional construal often decides between par and meṃ.

Productive meaning versus lexical government

Surface and point uses are productive: new object + पर is easy to interpret. Other predicates select पर lexically: भरोसा करना bharosā karnā “trust,” ध्यान देना dhyān denā “pay attention to,” निर्भर होना nirbhar honā “depend on.” Their complements are abstract targets, not literal surfaces.

कृपया इस बात पर ध्यान दीजिए।

kripyā is bāt par dhyān dījie.

Please pay attention to this point.

Learn ध्यान देना + पर as a frame. English pay attention to does not license Hindi को here.

A natural exchange

तुम कहाँ हो? — स्टेशन पर, टिकट वाली खिड़की के पास; नक्शे पर जगह देख लो।

tum kahā̃ ho? — sṭeśan par, ṭikaṭ vālī khiṛkī ke pās; nakśe par jagah dekh lo.

Where are you? — At the station, near the ticket window; check the place on the map. (informal)

The first पर marks a location point; the second marks a literal display surface.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting पर before its complement

❌ पर मेज़ किताब है।

Incorrect: पर follows its complement.

✅ मेज़ पर किताब है।

mez par kitāb hai.

There is a book on the table.

2. Keeping a masculine -ā noun direct

❌ रास्ता पर बहुत भीड़ है।

Incorrect: रास्ता becomes oblique रास्ते before पर.

✅ रास्ते पर बहुत भीड़ है।

rāste par bahut bhīṛ hai.

There is a large crowd on the road.

3. Using a direct plural before पर

❌ कुर्सियाँ पर बैग रखे हैं।

Incorrect: कुर्सियाँ becomes oblique plural कुर्सियों.

✅ कुर्सियों पर बैग रखे हैं।

kursiyoṃ par baig rakhe haiṃ.

Bags have been placed on the chairs.

4. Translating every English “at” with पर

❌ बच्चे स्कूल पर हैं।

Incorrect for ordinary attendance/location: use स्कूल में.

✅ बच्चे स्कूल में हैं।

bacce skūl meṃ haiṃ.

The children are at school.
