Hindi manner clauses use relative जिस तरह “in the way that” and a matching correlative such as उस तरह or emphatic उसी तरह “in that same way.” In जिस तरह तुमने समझाया, उसी तरह मैंने किया, the first clause supplies a model and the second says that another action matched it.
This pair is close to जैसे…वैसे, but जिस तरह…उस तरह makes the noun तरह “way/manner” overt. It is therefore especially clear when the comparison is long, when the correlate comes first, or when the writer wants to name one specific manner.
The full relative-correlative pair
जिस तरह तुमने अलमारी सजाई है, उसी तरह मेज़ भी सजाओ।
jis tarah tumne almārī sajāī hai, usī tarah mez bhī sajāo.
Decorate the table in the same way that you decorated the wardrobe. (informal)
The initial clause opens a variable manner: “in whichever/the way you decorated the wardrobe.” उसी तरह points back to that manner and ही inside उसी emphasizes an exact match.
Without emphasis, use उस तरह:
जिस तरह नील काम बाँटता है, उस तरह कबीर भी काम बाँटता है।
jis tarah nīl kām bā̃ṭtā hai, us tarah kabīr bhī kām bā̃ṭtā hai.
Kabir distributes work in the way that Neel does.
Here the second clause matches Kabir's method to Neel's. A plain उस तरह can make a looser comparison, while emphatic उसी तरह explicitly presents the manners as the same. To express a causal result instead, Hindi normally uses a causal frame rather than relying on this manner pair alone.
The main clause can come first
The correlative phrase may precede its model clause:
यह गाँठ उसी तरह बाँधो जिस तरह मैंने कल दिखाई थी।
yah gā̃ṭh usī tarah bā̃dho jis tarah maĩne kal dikhāī thī.
Tie this knot in exactly the way I demonstrated yesterday. (informal)
This order is natural when the instruction यह गाँठ…बाँधो is the starting point and the model is added afterward. A comma is usually unnecessary before a short final manner clause; intonation still marks the attachment.
Initial subordinate clauses normally take a comma in longer prose:
बैठक में जिस तरह जिम्मेदारियाँ तय की गई थीं, अंतिम मसौदे में उसी तरह दर्ज की गईं।
baiṭhak meṃ jis tarah zimmedāriyā̃ tay kī gaī thīṃ, antim masaude meṃ usī tarah darj kī gaīṃ.
The responsibilities were recorded in the final draft in the same way that they had been assigned in the meeting. (formal)
The comma helps readers locate the boundary; the paired phrases, not punctuation alone, establish the relation.
जिस तरह से is a common expanded form
Adding से explicitly marks manner or means:
जिस तरह से आपने समस्या समझाई, उससे सबको असली कारण समझ में आ गया।
jis tarah se āpne samasyā samjhāī, usse sabko aslī kāraṇ samajh meṃ ā gayā.
The way you explained the problem made the real cause clear to everyone. (respectful)
The correlate here is pronominal उससे “from/by that,” because the main clause presents the explanatory manner as a cause. A literal उसी तरह would instead say that another explanation followed the same method.
Both जिस तरह and जिस तरह से are standard. The shorter form is common in speech and writing; से is useful when “by the way/method” is prominent. Do not conclude that every first phrase requires the identical words in the correlate—the grammatical relation can be completed by उससे, उसी तरह, or a more specific expression.
Finite clause versus compact noun phrase
A finite manner clause carries its own subject and TAM:
जिस तरह फ़राह बच्चों को कहानी सुनाती है, उसी तरह मैं नहीं सुना सकता।
jis tarah farāh baccoṃ ko kahānī sunātī hai, usī tarah maĩ nahīṃ sunā saktā.
I cannot tell stories the way Farah does. (male speaker)
A compact की तरह phrase merely names the comparison model:
मैं फ़राह की तरह कहानी नहीं सुना सकता।
maĩ farāh kī tarah kahānī nahīṃ sunā saktā.
I cannot tell a story like Farah. (male speaker)
The finite form can tell us how Farah actually performs the action and can locate it in time. The noun phrase फ़राह की तरह has no independent tense and may compare the speaker with Farah more generally.
A participial noun phrase offers another compressed option:
निर्देश में बताए तरीके से मशीन बंद कीजिए।
nirdeś meṃ batāe tarīqe se maśīn band kījie.
Switch off the machine by the method described in the instructions. (formal/polite)
This version names a method through a participial modifier rather than asserting a separate finite model clause.
Simple and expanded manner clauses
A simple pair can contain two short actions:
जिस तरह मैं बोलूँ, उसी तरह दोहराना।
jis tarah maĩ bolū̃, usī tarah dohrānā.
Repeat it exactly the way I say it.
An expanded pair can give each clause its own participants and details:
जिस तरह प्रशिक्षक ने पहले नमूने को धीरे-धीरे घुमाकर उसकी दरारें दिखाईं, उसी तरह सहायक ने बाकी नमूनों की भी जाँच की।
jis tarah praśikṣak ne pahle namūne ko dhīre-dhīre ghumākar uskī darāreṃ dikhāīṃ, usī tarah sahāyak ne bākī namūnoṃ kī bhī jā̃c kī.
The assistant inspected the remaining samples in the same way that the instructor had slowly rotated the first sample and shown its cracks.
The model clause contains a converb घुमाकर whose understood actor is प्रशिक्षक. The main clause has a different subject सहायक. The overt correlative keeps the long comparison clear.
Subject reference and agreement stay local
The subjects of the two clauses may differ:
जिस तरह माँ ने कमरा सजाया था, उसी तरह बेटियों ने आँगन सजाया।
jis tarah mā̃ ne kamrā sajāyā thā, usī tarah beṭiyoṃ ne ā̃gan sajāyā.
The daughters decorated the courtyard in the same way that their mother had decorated the room.
Each perfective transitive clause has its own ने-marked agent. Masculine कमरा controls सजाया था, and masculine आँगन controls सजाया. A manner relation does not create shared case or long-distance agreement.
An omitted subject is possible only when context recovers it:
जिस तरह पहले करते थे, उसी तरह इस बार भी करेंगे।
jis tarah pahle karte the, usī tarah is bār bhī kareṅge.
We will do it this time too, the way we used to do it before.
The conversational context supplies the same group as the understood subject on both sides. If the actors differ, name them.
Tense and aspect need not match
The model may be past while the matching action is future:
जिस तरह आपने पिछली शिकायत सँभाली थी, उसी तरह आप यह मामला भी सँभालेंगे।
jis tarah āpne pichlī śikāyat sãbhālī thī, usī tarah āp yah māmlā bhī sãbhāleṅge.
You will handle this matter in the same way that you handled the previous complaint. (respectful male addressee or masculine/mixed group)
Hindi does not backshift or harmonize the two predicates merely because they are compared. Past perfect सँभाली थी establishes the model; future सँभालेंगे locates the new action.
Correlate omission and parenthetical use
In a short, local relation, a more specific manner phrase can replace उस तरह:
जिस तरह हमने तय किया था, काम उसी क्रम में आगे बढ़ेगा।
jis tarah hamne tay kiyā thā, kām usī kram meṃ āge baṛhegā.
The work will proceed in the same sequence we had agreed on.
Bare जिस तरह मैंने कहा था can also function as a parenthetical “as I said.” Then discourse supplies the link rather than an overt correlative. In a long sentence where the intended relation is manner comparison, retaining उसी तरह avoids a run-on reading. See parenthetical and comment clauses for that separate discourse use.
A spoken dialogue
रिया: यह कपड़ा कैसे मोड़ूँ? नानी: जिस तरह मैंने पहला कपड़ा मोड़ा था, उसी तरह इसे भी मोड़ दो।
riyā: yah kapṛā kaise moṛū̃? nānī: jis tarah maĩne pahlā kapṛā moṛā thā, usī tarah ise bhī moṛ do.
Riya: How should I fold this cloth? Grandmother: Fold this one the same way I folded the first one. (informal)
The direct question requests a manner; the response supplies a finite model clause and an overt correlate.
A formal written boundary
जिस प्रकार स्वतंत्र विशेषज्ञों ने प्रारंभिक आँकड़ों का मूल्यांकन किया था, उसी प्रकार अंतिम परिणामों की भी समीक्षा की जाएगी।
jis prakār svatantra viśeṣagyoṃ ne prārambhik ā̃kaṛoṃ kā mūlyāṅkan kiyā thā, usī prakār antim pariṇāmoṃ kī bhī samīkṣā kī jāegī.
The final results will be reviewed in the same manner in which independent experts evaluated the preliminary data. (formal/academic)
Clause boundary: [जिस प्रकार स्वतंत्र विशेषज्ञों ने प्रारंभिक आँकड़ों का मूल्यांकन किया था] [उसी प्रकार अंतिम परिणामों की भी समीक्षा की जाएगी]. जिस प्रकार…उसी प्रकार is a formal written alternative to everyday जिस तरह…उसी तरह.
Common Mistakes
1. Leaving a long relative manner clause without a correlate
❌ जिस तरह प्रशिक्षक ने पूरी प्रक्रिया समझाई, कर्मचारी अगले सप्ताह करेंगे।
Unclear run-on — the long main clause needs an overt manner correlate.
✅ जिस तरह प्रशिक्षक ने पूरी प्रक्रिया समझाई, कर्मचारी अगले सप्ताह उसी तरह काम करेंगे।
jis tarah praśikṣak ne pūrī prakriyā samjhāī, karmacārī agle saptāh usī tarah kām kareṅge.
Next week the employees will work in the way the instructor explained the whole process.
2. Repeating the relative form instead of closing the pair
❌ जिस तरह तुम लिखोगे, जिस तरह मैं लिखूँगा।
Incorrect as the intended paired comparison — the second clause needs उस/उसी तरह.
✅ जिस तरह तुम लिखोगे, उसी तरह मैं भी लिखूँगा।
jis tarah tum likhoge, usī tarah maĩ bhī likhū̃gā.
I will write in the same way that you do. (male speaker)
3. Making तरह agree with a feminine subject
❌ जिसी तरह रीना बोलती है, उसी तरह सुनो।
Incorrect — adverbial जिस तरह is invariant; it does not agree with Reena.
✅ जिस तरह रीना बोलती है, उसी तरह तुम भी बोलो।
jis tarah rīnā boltī hai, usī tarah tum bhī bolo.
Speak the way Reena does. (informal)
4. Forcing both clauses into the same tense
❌ जिस तरह उसने कल तैयारी की थी, उसी तरह हम कल तैयारी की थी।
Incorrect — the upcoming action needs its own future form and subject agreement.
✅ जिस तरह उसने कल तैयारी की थी, उसी तरह हम कल तैयारी करेंगे।
jis tarah usne kal taiyārī kī thī, usī tarah ham kal taiyārī kareṅge.
Tomorrow we will prepare in the same way that he or she did yesterday.
Key Takeaways
- जिस तरह…उस/उसी तरह overtly links a model manner to a corresponding action.
- जिस तरह से highlights method; the main clause may answer with उससे when that method causes a result.
- A finite manner clause has its own subject and TAM; की तरह and participial method phrases are compact non-finite alternatives.
- Each clause computes case and agreement locally, and its tense follows its own time reference.
- जिस प्रकार…उसी प्रकार is formal; everyday speech strongly favors जिस तरह…उसी तरह.
