तरह and रूप से adverbials

Hindi has two productive manner patterns that can look similar in English. X की तरह means “like X / in X's manner” and makes a comparison. X रूप से, most often adjective + रूप से, presents a manner or viewpoint explicitly and is especially common in formal writing: स्पष्ट रूप से “clearly,” व्यक्तिगत रूप से “personally.” They are not interchangeable suffixes.

X की तरह: comparison as manner

Because तरह is feminine, an ordinary noun or possessive form before it uses की.

वह अपनी माँ की तरह तेज़ बोलती है।

vah apnī mā̃ kī tarah tez boltī hai.

She speaks quickly like her mother.

यह मशीन इंसान की तरह सोच नहीं सकती।

yah maśīn iṃsān kī tarah soc nahīṃ saktī.

This machine cannot think like a human.

The comparison may concern manner, behavior, or resemblance. It does not say that the subject literally belongs to the comparison class.

Plural noun possessors take the oblique before की तरह:

बच्चों की तरह हर बात पर मत हँसो।

baccoṃ kī tarah har bāt par mat hãso.

Don't laugh at everything like children do. (familiar)

Pronouns use possessive forms: मेरी तरह, तुम्हारी तरह, उसकी तरह, आपकी तरह. The feminine -ī is selected by तरह, not by the speaker's or referent's gender.

💡
Learn kī tarah as a fixed relational frame. The kī points to feminine tarah; it does not agree with the person or thing being compared.

इस तरह and उस तरह

Demonstratives commonly form इस तरह “in this way” and उस तरह “in that way.” No overt की appears in these fixed oblique-demonstrative expressions.

फ़ोन को इस तरह मत पकड़ो—गिर जाएगा।

fon ko is tarah mat pakṛo—gir jāegā.

Don't hold the phone like this—it will fall. (familiar)

उसने सवाल का जवाब उसी तरह दिया जैसे हमने अभ्यास किया था।

usne savāl kā javāb usī tarah diyā jaise hamne abhyās kiyā thā.

She answered the question in the same way that we had practiced.

The second sentence uses the correlative pattern उसी तरह ... जैसे .... That larger clause relationship is covered under जिस तरह–उस तरह manner.

Degree and precision are usually expressed with ठीक, बिल्कुल, लगभग: ठीक मेरी तरह “just like me,” लगभग उसी तरह “in almost the same way.” बहुत मेरी तरह is not the neutral way to say “very much like me”; use बहुत हद तक मेरी तरह.

Adjective + रूप से

रूप means “form,” and से creates an adverbial phrase. In present-day usage, adjective + रूप से is productive mainly with abstract, evaluative, or classification adjectives in formal, academic, administrative, and journalistic prose.

AdverbialTypical meaningRegister
स्पष्ट रूप सेclearly, explicitlyneutral-formal
सामान्य रूप सेgenerallyformal
व्यक्तिगत रूप सेpersonallyneutral-formal
औपचारिक रूप सेformally, officiallyformal
तकनीकी रूप सेtechnicallytechnical/academic

कंपनी ने औपचारिक रूप से प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर लिया है।

kampanī ne aupcārik rūp se prastāv svīkār kar liyā hai.

The company has formally accepted the proposal. (formal)

व्यक्तिगत रूप से मुझे यह योजना पसंद है।

vyaktigat rūp se mujhe yah yojnā pasand hai.

Personally, I like this plan. (neutral-formal)

रूप से does not agree with the subject or object. The adjective is normally the established citation form used in that collocation: स्पष्ट रूप से, not a feminine स्पष्टा रूप से or plural form.

Bare form or रूप से?

Everyday Hindi often prefers a shorter lexical or adjective-shaped adverb: साफ़ बोलिए “speak clearly,” धीरे चलिए “walk slowly.” स्पष्ट रूप से कहिए is more explicit and formal; धीमे रूप से चलिए is unnatural in ordinary Hindi.

ज़रा साफ़-साफ़ बताओ कि हुआ क्या।

zarā sāf-sāf batāo ki huā kyā.

Just tell me clearly what happened. (informal)

रिपोर्ट में स्पष्ट रूप से कहा गया है कि शुल्क वापस नहीं होगा।

riporṭ meṃ spaṣṭ rūp se kahā gayā hai ki śulk vāpas nahīṃ hogā.

The report clearly states that the fee will not be refunded. (formal)

The difference is not merely length. Reduplicated साफ़-साफ़ is direct and conversational; स्पष्ट रूप से fits institutional prose. See adjectives used adverbially for the shorter pattern.

💡
Do not use rūp se as a universal translation of English -ly. Use it with established abstract adjectives, especially when the sentence itself belongs to a formal register.

Position and scope

Both patterns normally precede the predicate they modify. A sentence-level viewpoint phrase may also frame the whole clause at the beginning, as with व्यक्तिगत रूप से above.

Focus position changes scope:

उसने सिर्फ़ लिखित रूप से जवाब दिया।

usne sirf likhit rūp se javāb diyā.

He answered only in writing, not orally.

सिर्फ़ उसने लिखित रूप से जवाब दिया।

sirf usne likhit rūp se javāb diyā.

Only he answered in writing.

In the first, सिर्फ़ restricts the manner लिखित रूप से. In the second, it restricts the subject उसने. Leaving the adverbial after the final verb would be marked as an afterthought rather than neutral order.

रूप से versus के रूप में

Do not confuse manner रूप से with role or capacity के रूप में “as.”

वह सलाहकार के रूप में काम करती है।

vah salāhkār ke rūp meṃ kām kartī hai.

She works as an adviser. (formal)

This identifies her role; it does not describe how she works. By contrast, वह स्वतंत्र रूप से काम करती है means “she works independently.”

Common Mistakes

❌ वह उसका तरह बोलता है।

Incorrect—pronouns use a possessive form before feminine तरह.

✅ वह उसकी तरह बोलता है।

vah uskī tarah boltā hai.

He speaks like her/him.

❌ मैं धीमे रूप से चल रहा हूँ।

Unnatural in ordinary Hindi—use lexical धीरे for ‘slowly.’

✅ मैं धीरे चल रहा हूँ।

maĩ dhīre cal rahā hū̃.

I am walking slowly.

❌ वह शिक्षक रूप से काम करता है।

Incorrect for a professional role—use के रूप में, not रूप से.

✅ वह शिक्षक के रूप में काम करता है।

vah śikṣak ke rūp meṃ kām kartā hai.

He works as a teacher. (formal)

❌ उसने जवाब दिया स्पष्ट रूप से।

Marked and unnatural as neutral prose—the manner phrase normally precedes the predicate.

✅ उसने स्पष्ट रूप से जवाब दिया।

usne spaṣṭ rūp se javāb diyā.

He answered clearly. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • X की तरह compares a manner or behavior with X; इस/उस तरह mean “in this/that way.”
  • Adjective + रूप से is especially productive in formal and abstract language.
  • Everyday manner often prefers a bare word, reduplication, or another fixed phrase.
  • रूप से marks manner; के रूप में marks a role or capacity.
