Comparative clauses with जैसे वैसे

Hindi pairs relative जैसे “as/in the way that” with correlative वैसे “in that way”: जैसे मैंने समझाया, वैसे ही करना “Do it exactly as I explained.” The first clause establishes a manner or model; the second points back to it. Repeated जैसे-जैसे … वैसे-वैसे … expresses two developments changing together: “as X changes, so Y changes.”

English often uses a single as and leaves the correspondence implicit. Hindi can omit वैसे in short contexts, but the full pair makes the clause relation and scope much clearer.

The basic जैसे … वैसे pair

जैसे मैंने बताया, वैसे ही फ़ॉर्म भरना।

jaise maĩne batāyā, vaise hī form bharnā.

Fill in the form exactly as I explained.

जैसे रीना काम करती है, वैसे मैं नहीं कर सकता।

jaise rīnā kām kartī hai, vaise maĩ nahīṃ kar saktā.

I can’t work the way Rina does. (male speaker)

जैसे उसे काम समझाया गया था, वैसे ही उसने काम किया।

jaise use kām samjhāyā gayā thā, vaise hī usne kām kiyā.

He/She did the work exactly as it had been explained.

जैसे introduces a finite comparison clause. वैसे resumes its manner in the main clause, and ही sharpens the match to “exactly so.” The two clauses may have different subjects and voices.

Finite clause versus compact manner phrase

The finite model in जैसे रीना काम करती है, वैसे मैं नहीं कर सकता can carry its own subject रीना, agreement करती है, and present habitual time. A compact की तरह phrase packages the model as a noun phrase instead:

मैं रीना की तरह काम नहीं कर सकता।

maĩ rīnā kī tarah kām nahīṃ kar saktā.

I cannot work like Rina. (male speaker)

रीना की तरह has no independent tense or finite predicate. Use a finite जैसे clause when the comparison itself needs a full proposition; use की तरह when naming the model is enough.

For a related nominal pattern, see manner clauses with जिस तरह.

💡
Treat जैसे and वैसे as a matched pair of pointers: जैसे opens the model, and वैसे identifies the corresponding manner in the main assertion.

Simple and expanded versions

जैसे मैं करूँ, वैसे करना।

jaise maĩ karū̃, vaise karnā.

Do it the way I do it.

जैसे मैं पहले उदाहरण में हर चरण को अलग-अलग लिखकर समझाऊँ, वैसे ही तुम अगले सवाल का पूरा हल दिखाना।

jaise maĩ pahle udāharaṇ meṃ har caraṇ ko alag-alag likhkar samjhāū̃, vaise hī tum agle savāl kā pūrā hal dikhānā.

Just as I explain every step separately in the first example, show the complete solution to the next question in the same way.

The expanded sentence contains a converb लिखकर inside the model clause. The main instruction has a different subject तुम, so both subject references are overt.

वैसे can be omitted when the relation is local

काम वैसे करो जैसे प्रशिक्षक ने दिखाया था।

kām vaise karo jaise praśikṣak ne dikhāyā thā.

Do the work the way the instructor demonstrated.

जैसे मैंने कहा था, दस्तावेज़ उसी क्रम में रख देना।

jaise maĩne kahā thā, dastāvez usī kram meṃ rakh denā.

As I said, put the documents in that same order.

In the first example, the main-clause correlate precedes the comparison clause. In the second, उसी क्रम में supplies a more specific correlate than generic वैसे. Hindi does not require the pair to be adjacent or always ordered subordinate-first.

Bare जैसे मैंने कहा था can also function parenthetically as “as I said.” In that use, the following clause supplies the relevant content through discourse rather than an overt वैसे.

जैसे-जैसे … वैसे-वैसे for proportional change

Reduplication presents repeated or gradual covariation:

जैसे-जैसे रात बढ़ती गई, वैसे-वैसे हवा ठंडी होती गई।

jaise-jaise rāt baṛhtī gaī, vaise-vaise havā ṭhaṇḍī hotī gaī.

As the night wore on, the air grew colder and colder.

जैसे-जैसे लोग जुड़ते गए, वैसे-वैसे चर्चा अधिक उपयोगी होती गई।

jaise-jaise log juṛte gae, vaise-vaise carcā adhik upyogī hotī gaī.

As more people joined, the discussion became increasingly useful.

The paired repetition does not merely mean that one event happened after another. It maps stages of the first development onto stages of the second. Progressive change is also expressed by -ता गया / होती गई, but the internal morphology belongs to the predicates, not to the correlative itself.

💡
Use जैसे-जैसे … वैसे-वैसे when both sides change by degrees or repeated stages. For one fixed model and one matching action, ordinary जैसे … वैसे is enough.

Gendered जैसा / जैसी / जैसे versus adverbial जैसे

Adverbial जैसे / वैसे describes manner and is not agreeing with a noun. Adjectival correlatives do agree:

जैसी मेहनत करोगे, वैसी सफलता मिलेगी।

jaisī mehnat karoge, vaisī safaltā milegī.

The kind of effort you make will determine the kind of success you get.

जैसा कमरा हमने सोचा था, वैसा कमरा वहाँ नहीं मिला।

jaisā kamrā hamne socā thā, vaisā kamrā vahā̃ nahīṃ milā.

We did not find there the kind of room we had imagined.

Feminine जैसी / वैसी agrees with मेहनत / सफलता; masculine जैसा / वैसा agrees with कमरा. By contrast, जैसे मैंने कहा, वैसे करो uses invariant adverbial forms meaning “in the way.”

Tense and aspect across the comparison

Each clause keeps the time relation its meaning requires:

जैसे उन्होंने कल समझाया था, वैसे ही हम आज प्रक्रिया दोहराएँगे।

jaise unhoṃne kal samjhāyā thā, vaise hī ham āj prakriyā dohrāeṃge.

We will repeat the procedure today exactly as they explained it yesterday. (honorific)

The model clause is past perfect and the matching action is future. English sequence-of-tense rules do not force both sides into the same tense.

जैसे ही परिस्थिति बदलेगी, योजना भी बदलनी पड़ेगी।

jaise hī paristhiti badlegī, yojnā bhī badalnī paṛegī.

As soon as the situation changes, the plan will also have to change.

Be careful: जैसे ही here means “as soon as,” a temporal relation rather than manner comparison. It therefore has no matching वैसे. By contrast, comparative जैसे … वैसे ही … aligns two ways of acting.

Comparison, exemplification, and “as if”

जैसे कि can introduce an example or explicit comparison, while मानो / जैसे कि can introduce “as if”:

वह ऐसे बोल रहा था जैसे कि सब कुछ पहले से जानता हो।

vah aise bol rahā thā jaise ki sab kuch pahle se jāntā ho.

He was speaking as if he already knew everything.

This construction pairs ऐसे with a hypothetical comparison in जैसे कि … हो. It does not assert that he actually knew everything. Do not force every occurrence of जैसे into the factual जैसे … वैसे template.

A spoken dialogue

यह गाँठ कैसे बाँधूँ? — देखो, जैसे मैं बाँध रही हूँ, वैसे ही धीरे-धीरे बाँधो।

yah gā̃ṭh kaise bā̃dhū̃? — dekho, jaise maĩ bā̃dh rahī hū̃, vaise hī dhīre-dhīre bā̃dho.

How should I tie this knot? — Look, tie it slowly just the way I’m tying it. (female speaker)

The model action is progressive and simultaneous with the instruction. वैसे ही points back to that visible manner.

Formal written example and clause boundary

जैसे-जैसे उपलब्ध आँकड़ों की मात्रा बढ़ेगी, वैसे-वैसे विश्लेषण की विश्वसनीयता में भी सुधार होगा।

jaise-jaise uplabdh ā̃kaṛoṃ kī mātrā baṛhegī, vaise-vaise viśleṣaṇ kī viśvasnīyatā meṃ bhī sudhār hogā.

As the quantity of available data increases, the reliability of the analysis will also improve. (formal)

Clause boundary: [जैसे-जैसे उपलब्ध आँकड़ों की मात्रा बढ़ेगी] [वैसे-वैसे विश्लेषण की विश्वसनीयता में भी सुधार होगा]. The paired correlatives overtly align two gradual future developments; the comma helps readers locate the boundary.

Common Mistakes

❌ जैसे मैंने समझाया।

Incomplete as a standalone comparison — जैसे opens a model but no main assertion completes it.

✅ जैसे मैंने समझाया, वैसे ही तुम सवाल हल करो।

jaise maĩne samjhāyā, vaise hī tum savāl hal karo.

Solve the question exactly as I explained.

❌ जैसी मैं बोलूँ, वैसी लिखना।

Incorrect for adverbial ‘in the way’: no feminine noun controls जैसी/वैसी here.

✅ जैसे मैं बोलूँ, वैसे लिखना।

jaise maĩ bolū̃, vaise likhnā.

Write as I dictate.

❌ जैसा योजना तुम बनाओगे, वैसी परिणाम मिलेगा।

Incorrect paired agreement — feminine योजना requires जैसी, while masculine परिणाम requires वैसा.

✅ जैसी योजना तुम बनाओगे, वैसा ही परिणाम मिलेगा।

jaisī yojnā tum banāoge, vaisā hī pariṇām milegā.

You will get a result corresponding to the kind of plan you make.

❌ जैसे-जैसे तापमान बढ़ता गया, वैसे-वैसे हवा गर्म होते गए।

Incorrect — the changing predicate must agree with feminine singular हवा.

✅ जैसे-जैसे तापमान बढ़ता गया, वैसे-वैसे हवा गर्म होती गई।

jaise-jaise tāpmān baṛhtā gayā, vaise-vaise havā garm hotī gaī.

As the temperature kept rising, the air grew progressively warmer.

Key Takeaways

Finite जैसे … वैसे clauses compare manners; जैसे-जैसे … वैसे-वैसे aligns gradual developments. The clauses may differ in subject and tense. Adverbial जैसे / वैसे is invariant, while adjectival जैसा / जैसी / जैसे and वैसा / वैसी / वैसे agree with their local nouns. Context can license omission, but the full correlative pair makes long comparisons easier to parse.
