Parenthetical and comment clauses

A parenthetical or comment clause interrupts or frames another clause to show the speaker's stance, source, degree of commitment, or reformulation: यह रास्ता, मुझे लगता है, छोटा है “this route, I think, is shorter.” The host clause remains structurally complete without the comment; the comment is set off by intonation in speech and usually by commas, dashes, or brackets in writing.

Hindi draws parentheticals from finite clauses such as मुझे लगता है, relative frames such as जैसा कि आप जानते हैं, and compact non-finite or postpositional expressions such as मेरे ख़याल से. These forms do not all mean the same thing: some hedge, some cite shared knowledge, and some repair wording.

Complement clause versus parenthetical comment

Compare a matrix predicate selecting a कि complement:

मुझे लगता है कि शाम की उड़ान देर से पहुँचेगी।

mujhe lagtā hai ki śām kī uṛān der se pahũcegī.

I think that the evening flight will arrive late.

Now place the same stance inside the proposition:

शाम की उड़ान, मुझे लगता है, देर से पहुँचेगी।

śām kī uṛān, mujhe lagtā hai, der se pahũcegī.

The evening flight, I think, will arrive late.

In the first, मुझे लगता है is the matrix clause and कि introduces its content. In the second, शाम की उड़ान…देर से पहुँचेगी is the host clause; मुझे लगता है is a detachable comment. The paired commas represent the separate intonational contour.

The parenthetical order is more marked and often useful when the speaker begins with the topic before adding a hedge. It is common in conversation and discursive prose, but dense formal writing may prefer the uninterrupted complement structure.

💡
Remove the suspected parenthetical. If the remaining words still form the intended host clause, set the comment off prosodically and punctuationally; do not insert a stranded कि inside it.

Initial stance frames

Comments often precede the host clause:

सच कहूँ तो, मुझे यह प्रस्ताव व्यावहारिक नहीं लगता।

sac kahū̃ to, mujhe yah prastāv vyāvahārik nahīṃ lagtā.

To tell the truth, this proposal does not seem practical to me.

First-person subjunctive कहूँ and correlative तो create a conventional frankness frame: literally “if I speak truthfully, then…”. The condition is not a real uncertainty; the expression announces candid stance.

jahā̃ tak mujhe patā hai, dukān ravivār ko bhī khultī hai.

As far as I know, the shop opens on Sundays too.

जहाँ तक limits the claim to the speaker's knowledge. This is a genuine finite comment with present पता है, but it does not supply an argument required by खुलती है.

Other frequent frames include:

CommentFunction and register
मेरे ख़याल सेpersonal view; neutral/conversational
मेरे विचार मेंconsidered view; neutral to (formal)
का सवाल हैdelimit a topic; neutral to (formal)

mere xayāl se, hameṃ pahle choṭe śahroṃ meṃ sevā śurū karnī cāhie.

In my view, we should launch the service in smaller cities first.

The compact phrase has no independent tense. It identifies the source of the judgment rather than asserting “I think” as a separate finite event.

Medial comments preserve the host's grammar

A medial parenthetical may appear after a topic, subject, or other salient constituent:

रीना, जहाँ तक मैं समझता हूँ, इस बदलाव से सहमत नहीं है।

rīnā, jahā̃ tak maĩ samajhtā hū̃, is badlāv se sahmat nahīṃ hai.

Reena, as far as I understand, does not agree with this change. (male speaker)

Remove the comment and the host is रीना is the subject of the host clause, whose singular copula is है; है itself does not distinguish gender. Masculine समझता हूँ agrees locally with the male speaker inside the comment.

This decision, it scarcely needs saying, will affect many families. (formal/literary)

कहना न होगा is a compressed formal comment meaning that the point is obvious. It is inappropriate as the sole neutral conversational choice; everyday speech would prefer ज़ाहिर है or यह तो साफ़ है.

Parentheticals can also follow the host:

वह आज नहीं आएगा—कम-से-कम मुझे तो ऐसा ही लगता है।

vah āj nahīṃ āegā—kam-se-kam mujhe to aisā hī lagtā hai.

He won't come today—or at least that is what it seems to me.

The dash signals a late qualification. ऐसा points back to the whole preceding proposition.

Source-reminder clauses with जैसा कि

जैसा कि… can remind the reader of known, stated, or visible information:

जैसा कि आपने कल बताया था, मुख्य प्रवेश-द्वार मरम्मत के लिए बंद है।

jaisā ki āpne kal batāyā thā, mukhya praveś-dvār marammat ke lie band hai.

As you explained yesterday, the main entrance is closed for repairs. (respectful)

The comment identifies the addressee as the source. It does not mean that the closure resembles the act of explaining; जैसा कि has developed a discourse-linking use “as.”

A medial version is equally possible:

मुख्य प्रवेश-द्वार, जैसा कि आपने कल बताया था, मरम्मत के लिए बंद है।

mukhya praveś-dvār, jaisā ki āpne kal batāyā thā, marammat ke lie band hai.

The main entrance, as you explained yesterday, is closed for repairs. (respectful)

Do not confuse this parenthetical जैसा कि with full manner pairing जिस तरह… The latter compares how two events unfold; the parenthetical cites or recalls a proposition. See comparative clauses with जैसे and वैसे for the productive comparison.

Comment clauses for repair and reformulation

Spoken Hindi often uses a finite comment as its own intonational unit:

हमें रास्ता बदलना होगा—मेरा मतलब है, पुराने पुल से नहीं जाना चाहिए।

hameṃ rāstā badalnā hogā—merā matlab hai, purāne pul se nahīṃ jānā cāhie.

We'll have to change route—I mean, we shouldn't go by the old bridge.

मेरा मतलब है does not embed the following clause with कि here; it announces a repair after a pause. A fully integrated alternative is

Other conversational comments include देखिए “look/you see” (respectful), मान लीजिए “suppose,” and क्या कहूँ “what can I say.” They manage interaction, but should not be sprinkled into formal prose as literal equivalents of English fillers.

Finite and non-finite alternatives

Compare a finite source comment and a postpositional source phrase:

जैसा कि निरीक्षक ने लिखा है, निकास-द्वार पर्याप्त चौड़ा नहीं है।

jaisā ki nirīkṣak ne likhā hai, nikās-dvār paryāpt cauṛā nahīṃ hai.

As the inspector has written, the exit is not wide enough.

nirīkṣak kī riporṭ ke anusār, nikās-dvār paryāpt cauṛā nahīṃ hai.

According to the inspector's report, the exit is not wide enough. (formal)

The finite version can locate the writing in time and present it as an act. के अनुसार simply attributes the proposition to a source. Neither form changes host agreement or TAM.

A compact subjunctive frame can present a reformulation:

सीधे शब्दों में कहें तो, यह योजना अभी तैयार नहीं है।

sīdhe śabdoṃ meṃ kaheṃ to, yah yojnā abhī taiyār nahīṃ hai.

Put plainly, this plan is not ready yet.

This frame is appropriate in discussion; compact सीधे शब्दों में may be better when no explicit act of reformulation matters.

Subject reference and TAM stay local

Parenthetical clauses retain their own person, honorificity, and time:

जैसा कि हम पिछले अध्याय में देख चुके हैं, यह नियम हर क्रिया पर लागू नहीं होता।

jaisā ki ham pichle adhyāy meṃ dekh cuke haiṃ, yah niyam har kriyā par lāgū nahīṃ hotā.

As we have seen in the previous chapter, this rule does not apply to every verb. (academic)

Present perfect देख चुके हैं treats the earlier discussion as currently relevant; host habitual लागू नहीं होता states a general limitation. There is no reason to force both predicates into the same tense.

A future text pointer is also possible:

जैसा कि अगले खंड में स्पष्ट होगा, दोनों आँकड़ों की तुलना सीधे नहीं की जा सकती।

jaisā ki agle khaṇḍ meṃ spaṣṭ hogā, donoṃ ā̃kaṛoṃ kī tulnā sīdhe nahīṃ kī jā saktī.

As will become clear in the next section, the two sets of data cannot be compared directly. (academic)

Future होगा belongs to the upcoming explanation; present passive modal नहीं की जा सकती states the current analytical constraint.

A spoken dialogue

aman: kyā hameṃ āj hī javāb denā cāhie? līlā: sac kahū̃ to, mujhe abhī pūrī bāt samajh nahīṃ āī. merā matlab hai, hameṃ ek din aur mā̃gnā cāhie.

Aman: Should we answer today? Leela: Honestly, I still haven't understood everything. I mean, we should ask for one more day. (informal)

सच कहूँ तो frames Leela's stance; मेरा मतलब है reformulates its practical consequence. Both comments have their own intonational units.

A formal written parenthetical

prastāvit vyavasthā, jaisā ki svatantra samīkṣā meṃ spaṣṭ kiyā gayā hai, choṭe saṃsthānoṃ par asamān vittīya bojh ḍāl saktī hai.

The proposed system, as the independent review makes clear, may place an unequal financial burden on small institutions. (formal)

The comment is embedded in punctuation, while host subject

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving कि stranded inside a medial comment

Incorrect — medial parenthetical मुझे लगता है takes no trailing कि.

yah ṭren, mujhe lagtā hai, der se āegī.

This train, I think, will arrive late.

2. Failing to mark both edges of a medial parenthetical

Unclear formal punctuation — set the inserted source comment off on both sides.

yah nīti, jaisā ki riporṭ batātī hai, asthāyī hai.

This policy, as the report indicates, is temporary. (formal)

3. Losing honorific agreement inside the comment

Incorrect — respectful आप requires जानते हैं inside the parenthetical.

jaisā ki āp jānte haiṃ, yah rāstā kāfī lambā hai.

As you know, this route is quite long. (respectful)

4. Forcing the comment and host into one tense

Wrong for a forward reference — था points backward rather than to the coming section.

jaisā ki agle khaṇḍ meṃ spaṣṭ hogā, yah antar mahatvapūrṇ hai.

As will become clear in the next section, this distinction is important. (academic)

Key Takeaways

  • Parentheticals comment on a complete host clause and are detachable from its core syntax.
  • Initial comments take a following comma; medial comments normally need punctuation on both sides; final qualifications often suit a dash.
P is a complement structure, while P, मुझे लगता है, … is parenthetical and takes no stranded कि.
  • Finite comments express person and TAM; compact phrases such as मेरे ख़याल से and के अनुसार attribute stance without independent tense.
  • Host and parenthetical compute subject reference, honorificity, agreement, and time locally.
