Alternative and disjunctive clauses

Hindi presents alternatives with neutral या “or”: हम बस से जाएँगे या ट्रेन से जाएँगे “We’ll go by bus or by train.” When both alternatives need clear, balanced marking, use या तो … या …. Formal notices and administrative prose also use अथवा.

Disjunction can join words, phrases, or complete clauses. The omitted material in a shorter alternative must remain recoverable, and each full clause keeps its own subject, tense, and agreement.

Simple alternatives with या

तुम चाय लोगे या कॉफ़ी?

tum cāy loge yā kofī?

Will you have tea or coffee?

हम बस से जाएँगे या ट्रेन से जाएँगे।

ham bas se jāeṃge yā ṭren se jāeṃge.

We will go by bus or by train.

आज नेहा खाना बनाएगी या हम बाहर खाएँगे।

āj nehā khānā banāegī yā ham bāhar khāeṃge.

Today Neha will cook, or we will eat out.

The first example coordinates two noun phrases and omits the repeated लोगे after कॉफ़ी. The second makes both predicates overt. The third coordinates two complete clauses with different subjects.

For phrase-level alternatives and register, see या and अथवा.

💡
Use simple या when the structure of the alternatives is obvious. Repeat the verb or use paired या तो … या … when omission could hide where one alternative ends.

Balanced alternatives with या तो … या …

The paired construction marks both branches explicitly:

या तो तुम आज आवेदन भेज दो, या मैं कल दफ़्तर जाकर जमा कर दूँगा।

yā to tum āj āvedan bhej do, yā maĩ kal daftar jākar jamā kar dū̃gā.

Either you send the application today, or I’ll go to the office and submit it tomorrow. (male speaker)

हम या तो बैठक ऑनलाइन करेंगे या उसे अगले सप्ताह तक टाल देंगे।

ham yā to baiṭhak onlāin kareṃge yā use agle saptāh tak ṭāl deṃge.

We will either hold the meeting online or postpone it until next week.

तो belongs to the first member of the pair; it is not the result marker of an अगर … तो … condition here. Both alternatives should be structurally parallel enough for listeners to compare them.

Simple and expanded versions

अभी चलो या यहीं रुको।

abhī calo yā yahīṃ ruko.

Leave now or stay right here.

तुम अभी हमारे साथ स्टेशन चलो, या फिर यहीं रुककर सामान आने तक चौकीदार का इंतज़ार करो।

tum abhī hamāre sāth sṭeśan calo, yā phir yahīṃ rukkar sāmān āne tak caukīdār kā intazār karo.

Come to the station with us now, or else stay here and wait for the guard until the luggage arrives.

The expanded sentence repeats the imperative only where needed and uses रुककर to sequence two actions within the second alternative. या फिर makes the switch to the longer second branch easier to process.

Shared material and ellipsis

Repeated predicates are often omitted from the second alternative:

रीना सोमवार को आएगी या मंगलवार को।

rīnā somvār ko āegī yā maṅgalvār ko.

Rina will come on Monday or Tuesday.

The second branch means मंगलवार को आएगी. The shared subject and predicate are recoverable, so repeating them is unnecessary.

When subjects differ, retain enough material to avoid ambiguity:

या कविता प्रस्तुति देगी, या रोहन बैठक चलाएगा।

yā kavitā prastuti degī, yā rohan baiṭhak calāegā.

Either Kavita will give the presentation, or Rohan will chair the meeting.

The two future predicates agree independently with their subjects. Disjunction does not create one joint subject.

Tense and aspect across alternatives

Alternatives can locate their events at different times:

वह अभी घर आएगा या शाम को हमें फ़ोन करेगा।

vah abhī ghar āegā yā śām ko hameṃ fon karegā.

He will come home now or call us in the evening.

They can also contrast a past possibility with a present inference:

फ़ाइल नीलम ने रखी थी या शायद अभी भी कबीर के पास है।

fāil nīlam ne rakhī thī yā śāyad abhī bhī kabīr ke pās hai.

Either Neelam had put the file away, or perhaps Kabir still has it.

Each clause selects tense from its own intended time. English sequence-of-tense patterns do not require matching Hindi forms across या.

Questions, embedded alternatives, and कि

A direct alternative question can stand on its own:

तुम हमारे साथ आ रहे हो या घर जा रहे हो?

tum hamāre sāth ā rahe ho yā ghar jā rahe ho?

Are you coming with us or going home?

When the whole choice is embedded under “know,” “ask,” or “decide,” कि marks the finite clause boundary:

मुझे नहीं पता कि वे आज पहुँचेंगे या कल।

mujhe nahīṃ patā ki ve āj pahũceṃge yā kal.

I don’t know whether they will arrive today or tomorrow.

The second branch omits पहुँचेंगे, which is recovered from the first. The complementizer कि introduces the entire embedded question; या coordinates the alternatives inside it.

For a yes/no uncertainty, Hindi commonly uses कि नहीं or या नहीं:

उसने पूछा कि बैठक समय पर शुरू होगी या नहीं।

usne pūchā ki baiṭhak samay par śurū hogī yā nahīṃ.

He/She asked whether the meeting would start on time.

The past पूछा does not mechanically force a past form inside the question. Future होगी is appropriate because the meeting was still later than the asking time.

Negative alternatives and consequences

Paired न … न … means “neither … nor …”:

न बस आई, न किसी ने टैक्सी भेजी।

na bas āī, na kisī ne ṭaiksī bhejī.

Neither did the bus come nor did anyone send a taxi.

By contrast, वरना or नहीं तो means “otherwise” and introduces a consequence, not a neutral alternative:

अभी निकलो, वरना आख़िरी बस छूट जाएगी।

abhī niklo, varnā āxirī bas chūṭ jāegī.

Leave now, otherwise you’ll miss the last bus.

The second clause is presented as the consequence of rejecting the command. Replacing वरना with plain या would make the two clauses sound like freely chosen alternatives.

A spoken dialogue

आज खाना घर पर बनाएँ या बाहर चलें? — घर पर बनाते हैं; बाहर बहुत भीड़ होगी।

āj khānā ghar par banāeṃ yā bāhar caleṃ? — ghar par banāte haiṃ; bāhar bahut bhīṛ hogī.

Shall we cook at home today or go out? — Let’s cook at home; it’ll be very crowded outside.

Both subjunctive forms present proposals. The reply selects one option and gives a reason in a new independent clause after the semicolon.

Formal written alternatives and punctuation

अथवा is common in instructions, forms, regulations, and formal alternatives. It can sound stiff in casual conversation.

आवेदक प्रमाणपत्र की प्रति ऑनलाइन जमा कर सकता है अथवा उसे पंजीकृत डाक से भेज सकता है।

āvedak pramāṇpatr kī prati onlāin jamā kar saktā hai athvā use pañjīkrit ḍāk se bhej saktā hai.

The applicant may submit a copy of the certificate online or send it by registered mail. (formal)

Clause boundary: [आवेदक प्रमाणपत्र की प्रति ऑनलाइन जमा कर सकता है] [अथवा उसे पंजीकृत डाक से भेज सकता है]. The subject is shared and omitted in the second clause; उसे resumes the certificate copy. No comma is necessary between two short balanced branches, though a semicolon can clarify very long alternatives.

💡
या coordinates alternatives inside one clause or between clauses; कि marks an embedded finite question; वरना marks the consequence of not choosing the first course. English “or” can correspond to all three relations, but Hindi distinguishes them.

Common Mistakes

❌ या तो तुम आज फ़ॉर्म भेजो, मैं कल जमा करूँगा।

Incomplete paired coordination — the second alternative needs या.

✅ या तो तुम आज फ़ॉर्म भेजो, या मैं कल जमा करूँगा।

yā to tum āj form bhejo, yā maĩ kal jamā karū̃gā.

Either you send the form today, or I’ll submit it tomorrow. (male speaker)

❌ मुझे नहीं पता वे आज आएँगे या कल।

Incomplete in neutral careful prose — the embedded finite alternative question should be introduced by कि.

✅ मुझे नहीं पता कि वे आज आएँगे या कल।

mujhe nahīṃ patā ki ve āj āeṃge yā kal.

I don’t know whether they’ll come today or tomorrow.

❌ अभी निकलो या बस छूट जाएगी।

Wrong for the intended warning — या presents a choice, while the second clause is actually a consequence.

✅ जल्दी निकलो, वरना बस छूट जाएगी।

jaldī niklo, varnā bas chūṭ jāegī.

Leave early, otherwise you’ll miss the bus.

❌ रीना सोमवार को आएगी या मोहन मंगलवार को आएगी।

Incorrect — the second future predicate must agree with masculine singular मोहन.

✅ रीना सोमवार को आएगी या मोहन मंगलवार को आएगा।

rīnā somvār ko āegī yā mohan maṅgalvār ko āegā.

Either Rina will come on Monday or Mohan will come on Tuesday.

Key Takeaways

Use या for neutral alternatives, या तो … या … for balanced explicit branches, and formal अथवा in official prose. Shared material may be omitted only when it is recoverable. कि introduces an embedded alternative question, while वरना / नहीं तो introduces a consequence rather than a simple option.
