Coordinated clauses

Clause coordination joins two units that could each function as a sentence: रीना ने खाना बनाया और मोहन ने मेज़ लगाई “Reena prepared the food, and Mohan set the table.” Neutral और expresses addition; formal तथा often coordinates parallel statements in administrative or academic writing.

Coordination does not erase clause structure. Each clause has its own subject reference, case licensing, agreement, and time interpretation, even when repeated material is omitted.

Two complete finite clauses

सबा ने खिड़की खोली और कबीर ने पंखा बंद किया।

sabā ne khiṛkī kholī aur kabīr ne paṅkhā band kiyā.

Saba opened the window, and Kabir switched off the fan.

The first perfective predicate agrees with feminine खिड़की; the second agrees with masculine पंखा. Both agents carry ने because each heads a transitive perfective clause.

बस समय पर पहुँची और सभी यात्री उतर गए।

bas samay par pahũcī aur sabhī yātrī utar gae.

The bus arrived on time, and all the passengers got off.

The clauses are grammatically equal. और does not itself say that arrival caused the passengers to get off, though real-world knowledge suggests a sequence.

For coordination within a single noun phrase or shared predicate, see coordination and shared arguments.

💡
Check each side of और as a small sentence. Supply the case marker and agreement that its own predicate requires before deciding what can be omitted.

Simple and expanded coordination

घंटी बजी और बच्चे बाहर आए।

ghaṇṭī bajī aur bacce bāhar āe.

The bell rang, and the children came outside.

जैसे ही दोपहर की घंटी बजी, बच्चे अपनी किताबें समेटकर कक्षा से बाहर आए और मैदान की ओर दौड़ गए।

jaise hī dopahar kī ghaṇṭī bajī, bacce apnī kitābeṃ sameṭkar kakṣā se bāhar āe aur maidān kī or dauṛ gae.

As soon as the afternoon bell rang, the children packed up their books, came out of the classroom, and ran toward the playground.

The expanded sentence contains a temporal subordinate clause, a converb समेटकर, and two coordinated finite predicates. The comma closes the opening time clause; और links the two main-clause predicates.

A shared subject may be omitted

If both predicates clearly have the same subject, Hindi usually states it once:

नैना घर लौटी और सीधे सो गई।

nainā ghar lauṭī aur sīdhe so gaī.

Naina returned home and went straight to sleep.

अर्जुन ने रिपोर्ट पढ़ी और उसमें तीन गलतियाँ ढूँढ़ीं।

arjun ne riporṭ paṛhī aur usmeṃ tīn galtiyā̃ ḍhū̃ṛhīṃ.

Arjun read the report and found three errors in it.

In the first example, feminine लौटी and सो गई confirm the same subject. In the second, the understood agent of ढूँढ़ीं is Arjun, while the unmarked feminine plural object तीन गलतियाँ controls the second perfective predicate. The earlier ने-marked agent does not make every later predicate default masculine singular.

Repeat the subject when reference could be unclear:

रवि ने मोहन को फ़ोन किया और मोहन तुरंत घर से निकल गया।

ravi ne mohan ko fon kiyā aur mohan turant ghar se nikal gayā.

Ravi phoned Mohan, and Mohan immediately left home.

Using only वह would make the person who left potentially ambiguous. Coordination permits omission only when listeners can recover the intended subject safely.

Coordination versus participial sequencing

Hindi often uses -कर / -करके when one subject completes one action as a step toward another:

दरवाज़ा खोलकर सिया भीतर गई।

darvāzā kholkar siyā bhītar gaī.

After opening the door, Siya went inside.

Compare finite coordination:

सिया ने दरवाज़ा खोला और हवा का तेज़ झोंका भीतर आया।

siyā ne darvāzā kholā aur havā kā tez jhoṅkā bhītar āyā.

Siya opened the door, and a strong gust of wind came inside.

The converb खोलकर normally shares its understood subject with सिया and presents opening as a dependent prior step. The coordinated clauses have different subjects and independent finite predicates. English and can cover both relations, but Hindi overtly distinguishes them.

Tense and aspect across clauses

Coordinated clauses need not have matching tense:

वह कल जयपुर पहुँचा था और आज दिल्ली लौट जाएगा।

vah kal jaypur pahũcā thā aur āj dillī lauṭ jāegā.

He had reached Jaipur yesterday and will return to Delhi today.

Past perfect पहुँचा था establishes one time; future लौट जाएगा establishes another. Do not change the second clause to past merely because the first is past.

When both clauses share a time frame, each can still carry the form needed for its own viewpoint:

मैं खाना बना रही थी और बच्चे आँगन में खेल रहे थे।

maĩ khānā banā rahī thī aur bacce ā̃gan meṃ khel rahe the.

I was cooking, and the children were playing in the courtyard. (female speaker)

The parallel progressives express simultaneous background events. और contributes addition, while aspect supplies simultaneity.

A spoken dialogue

तुम टिकट ले आओगे और मैं होटल बुक कर दूँ? — ठीक है, फिर शाम को बात करते हैं।

tum ṭikaṭ le āoge aur maĩ hoṭal buk kar dū̃? — ṭhīk hai, phir śām ko bāt karte haiṃ.

Will you get the tickets and shall I book the hotel? — All right, then we’ll talk this evening.

The question coordinates two proposals with different subjects. The second uses a first-person subjunctive कर दूँ as a suggestion; coordination does not require identical moods.

Punctuation and longer coordination

Short clauses joined by और need no comma. A comma can help when clauses are long or when a boundary might otherwise be missed; a semicolon can separate heavily expanded clauses. Do not rely on a comma alone to join unrelated sentences in imitation of an English run-on.

A formal written example uses तथा and makes the parallel clauses explicit:

विभाग ने आवेदनों की जाँच पूरी कर ली है तथा चयन समिति अगले सप्ताह परिणाम घोषित करेगी।

vibhāg ne āvedanoṃ kī jā̃c pūrī kar lī hai tathā cayan samiti agle saptāh pariṇām ghoṣit karegī.

The department has completed its review of the applications, and the selection committee will announce the results next week. (formal)

Clause boundary: [विभाग ने आवेदनों की जाँच पूरी कर ली है] [तथा चयन समिति अगले सप्ताह परिणाम घोषित करेगी]. Each bracket contains a finite predicate and its own subject. तथा marks coordination, not subordination.

💡
और and तथा state addition. Event order, cause, and simultaneity usually come from tense, aspect, adverbials, and world knowledge—not from the conjunction alone.

Common Mistakes

❌ मीरा ने पर्दा हटाया और रोहन दरवाज़ा खोला।

Incorrect in the intended perfective reading — the second transitive agent also requires ने.

✅ मीरा ने पर्दा हटाया और रोहन ने दरवाज़ा खोला।

mīrā ne pardā haṭāyā aur rohan ne darvāzā kholā.

Meera moved the curtain, and Rohan opened the door.

❌ तारा बस से उतरी और तेज़ी से चला गया।

Incorrect — the omitted subject remains Tara, so the second predicate must be feminine.

✅ तारा बस से उतरी और तेज़ी से चली गई।

tārā bas se utrī aur tezī se calī gaī.

Tara got off the bus and walked away quickly.

❌ दरवाज़ा खोलकर हवा भीतर आई।

Incorrect for the intended meaning that Siya opened the door — the converb wrongly makes the wind its understood subject.

✅ सिया ने दरवाज़ा खोला और हवा भीतर आई।

siyā ne darvāzā kholā aur havā bhītar āī.

Siya opened the door, and the wind came inside.

❌ वह कल पहुँचा था और आज लौट गया।

Wrong for the intended future return — English past reporting does not force the second Hindi clause into the past.

✅ वह कल पहुँचा था और आज लौट जाएगा।

vah kal pahũcā thā aur āj lauṭ jāegā.

He had arrived yesterday and will return today.

Key Takeaways

Clause coordination joins equal finite clauses, while a converb makes one event dependent on another. A recoverable shared subject can be omitted, but case and agreement are still computed within each predicate. और is neutral, तथा is formal, and neither conjunction by itself specifies sequence, cause, or matching tense.
