और is Hindi’s ordinary word for “and.” It joins people and things, descriptions, actions, and whole clauses. It is neutral in register: you hear it constantly in conversation and see it in formal writing. The main challenge is usually not the word itself but recognizing exactly what it joins.
Joining nouns and noun phrases
Put और between the final two members of a simple list:
मैंने सेब, केले और संतरे खरीदे।
maĩne seb, kele aur santre kharīde.
I bought apples, bananas, and oranges.
Hindi normally does not put a comma immediately before the final और in a short list. A comma may appear in a complex list where it prevents confusion, but it is not an automatic copy of the English Oxford comma.
Two singular people joined by और normally form a plural subject:
नैना और राहुल आज घर पर हैं।
nainā aur rāhul āj ghar par haiṃ.
Naina and Rahul are at home today.
The plural auxiliary हैं reflects the coordinated subject. With two feminine subjects in the perfective, the verb is feminine plural:
रिया और सना बाज़ार गईं।
riyā aur sanā bāzār gaīṃ.
Riya and Sana went to the market.
Mixed-gender human coordination normally uses masculine plural agreement. For more detail, see coordinated nouns and agreement.
One postposition can apply to the whole group
When both nouns have the same role, one postposition commonly follows the entire coordination:
मैंने कविता और नील से बात की।
maĩne kavitā aur nīl se bāt kī.
I spoke with Kavita and Neel.
The structure is [कविता और नील] से. Hindi does not need कविता से और नील से unless the speaker wants to emphasize each person separately. A declinable noun before the shared postposition still takes its oblique form:
यह कमरा लड़कों और लड़कियों के लिए है।
yah kamrā laṛkoṃ aur laṛkiyoṃ ke lie hai.
This room is for boys and girls.
Both plural nouns are oblique because के लिए governs the whole pair. In longer or structurally unequal phrases, repeating the postposition can make the relation clearer.
Joining descriptions and actions
और can coordinate adjectives or other descriptions of one noun:
यह रास्ता छोटा और सुरक्षित है।
yah rāstā choṭā aur surakṣit hai.
This route is short and safe.
It can also link actions that share one subject:
आयुष दरवाज़ा खोलता है और बाहर देखता है।
āyuṣ darvāzā kholtā hai aur bāhar dekhtā hai.
Ayush opens the door and looks outside.
The subject need not be repeated. If both predicates share the auxiliary, Hindi can coordinate compactly:
वह रोज़ जल्दी उठती और टहलने जाती है।
vah roz jaldī uṭhtī aur ṭahalne jātī hai.
She gets up early and goes for a walk every day.
The single final है supports both habitual predicates. This is natural Hindi, but beginners may repeat है after each predicate without changing the basic meaning.
Do not use और to split a compound verb such as लिख देना. There, देना is a vector verb contributing completion or affectedness, not a second coordinated event. The coordination and shared arguments page develops this distinction.
Joining two clauses
Two short independent clauses can be joined directly:
बस आ गई और हम चढ़ गए।
bas ā gaī aur ham caṛh gae.
The bus arrived and we got on.
Each clause has its own subject and predicate. The order suggests a natural sequence, but और itself merely adds the second clause; context creates the temporal interpretation.
मैं खाना बनाऊँगी और तुम मेज़ लगा देना।
maĩ khānā banāū̃gī aur tum mez lagā denā.
I'll cook, and you set the table. (informal; female speaker)
This is a natural conversational plan made of two short clauses. In careful prose, a comma can separate long clauses, especially if each contains internal material:
सुबह तकनीकी दल ने सभी उपकरणों की जाँच की, और दोपहर में प्रबंधक ने अंतिम रिपोर्ट पर हस्ताक्षर किए।
subah taknīkī dal ne sabhī upkaraṇoṃ kī jā̃c kī, aur dopahar meṃ prabandhak ne antim riporṭ par hastākṣar kie.
In the morning the technical team inspected all the equipment, and in the afternoon the manager signed the final report. (formal)
The comma is a reading aid, not a requirement triggered by every और. A comma after और normally breaks the connector away from what it joins and should be avoided.
Addition is not contrast or result
English and can loosely imply “but,” “so,” or “then.” Hindi often chooses a more exact connector when the relation matters.
मैंने उसे बुलाया, लेकिन वह नहीं आया।
maĩne use bulāyā, lekin vah nahīṃ āyā.
I invited him, but he did not come.
Using और here merely lists two facts and weakens the defeated expectation. लेकिन or conversational मगर explicitly marks contrast.
बारिश बहुत तेज़ थी, इसलिए मैच रद्द कर दिया गया।
bāriś bahut tez thī, islie maic radd kar diyā gayā.
It was raining heavily, so the match was cancelled.
इसलिए states a result. और would leave the causal link to inference. At A1, और is a safe additive connector, but it is not a universal translation for every English and.
Repeated and paired forms
Hindi can repeat और before several items for rhetorical accumulation:
हमें पानी भी चाहिए, खाना भी और आराम भी।
hameṃ pānī bhī cāhie, khānā bhī aur ārām bhī.
We need water, food, and rest as well.
More commonly, paired दोनों…और… emphasizes that both members are included:
कविता हिंदी और अंग्रेज़ी दोनों पढ़ती है।
kavitā hindī aur aṅgrezī donoṃ paṛhtī hai.
Kavita studies both Hindi and English.
Hindi often places दोनों after the coordinated phrase, unlike English both, which usually comes before it. भी…भी is another native paired strategy: रीना भी और अजय भी “both Reena and Ajay / Reena and Ajay too.” Do not stack every marker unless the emphasis requires it.
रीना भी आएगी और अजय भी आएगा।
rīnā bhī āegī aur ajay bhī āegā.
Reena will come, and Ajay will too.
Register: native everyday और versus marked alternatives
और is the unmarked native conversational and written coordinator. Highly Sanskritized तथा and एवं are (formal) and common in notices, headings, administrative lists, and institutional names. They usually sound stiff in ordinary conversation.
आवेदन-पत्र तथा पहचान-पत्र कार्यालय में जमा करें।
āvedan-patr tathā pahcān-patr kāryālay meṃ jamā kareṃ.
Submit the application form and identification document at the office. (formal/administrative)
The conversational version is simpler:
फ़ॉर्म और पहचान-पत्र दफ़्तर में जमा कर देना।
form aur pahcān-patr daftar meṃ jamā kar denā.
Hand in the form and ID at the office. (informal)
Urdu-influenced नीज़ “and furthermore” is (formal/literary) and survives in legal, journalistic, and elevated prose. It does not replace everyday और between two family members or two routine actions. Choosing a marked connector is a register decision, not a sign of better Hindi.
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping singular agreement with two people
❌ मोहन और सोहन आया है।
Incorrect — the coordinated subject is plural.
✅ मोहन और सोहन आए हैं।
mohan aur sohan āe haiṃ.
Mohan and Sohan have arrived.
2. Copying an English comma before every and
❌ मुझे चाय, और बिस्कुट चाहिए।
Incorrect punctuation for a two-item phrase — no comma separates और from its second member.
✅ मुझे चाय और बिस्कुट चाहिए।
mujhe cāy aur biskuṭ cāhie.
I would like tea and biscuits.
3. Using addition where contrast is intended
❌ दुकान खुली थी, और लेकिन अंदर कोई नहीं था।
Incorrect — do not stack additive और and contrastive लेकिन at one clause boundary.
✅ दुकान खुली थी, लेकिन अंदर कोई नहीं था।
dukān khulī thī, lekin andar koī nahīṃ thā.
The shop was open, but nobody was inside.
4. Doubling paired markers unnecessarily
❌ दोनों रीना और सीमा दोनों आईं।
Incorrectly doubled — one well-placed दोनों is enough.
✅ रीना और सीमा दोनों आईं।
rīnā aur sīmā donoṃ āīṃ.
Both Reena and Seema came.
Key Takeaways
- और neutrally coordinates nouns, phrases, predicates, and clauses.
- A coordinated subject is normally plural; a shared postposition can follow the whole coordinated phrase.
- Use punctuation to clarify long structures, not automatically before or after every और.
- Choose लेकिन/मगर for contrast and इसलिए for an explicit result instead of forcing और to carry those relations.
- तथा, एवं, and नीज़ are marked formal choices; everyday Hindi prefers और.
