या and अथवा alternatives

या is the everyday Hindi coordinator for alternatives: “or.” It can join single words, larger phrases, actions, or complete clauses. अथवा has the same basic coordinating function but belongs mainly to (formal) written Hindi. Learning their shared grammar is simple; the important work is making the alternatives parallel and choosing a connector that fits the situation.

या between words and phrases

Put या directly between two options:

आप चाय या कॉफ़ी लेंगे?

āp cāy yā kofī leṅge?

Will you have tea or coffee? (polite)

The options are two noun phrases occupying the same object slot. या can also join locations, times, or manner phrases:

हम शनिवार को या रविवार की सुबह मिल सकते हैं।

ham śanivār ko yā ravivār kī subah mil sakte haiṃ.

We can meet on Saturday or on Sunday morning.

The two choices need not have the same number of words, but they should perform the same grammatical job. If there are three or more options, Hindi normally places commas between the earlier members and या before the final one:

भुगतान नक़द, कार्ड या बैंक हस्तांतरण से किया जा सकता है।

bhugtān naqd, kārḍ yā baiṅk hastāntaraṇ se kiyā jā saktā hai.

Payment can be made by cash, card, or bank transfer. (formal)

No comma is normally needed before final या in a short list. The postposition से applies to the full series.

💡
Check that the material on each side of या answers the same question: what? where? when? do what? Parallel alternatives are easier to understand and punctuate.

Joining actions and clauses

या can coordinate two predicates with a shared subject:

अभी टिकट बुक कर लो या सुबह स्टेशन पर खरीद लेना।

abhī ṭikaṭ buk kar lo yā subah sṭeśan par kharīd lenā.

Book the ticket now or buy it at the station in the morning. (informal)

It can also join complete clauses with different subjects:

तुम घर पर रुको या मैं तुम्हारे साथ चलूँ?

tum ghar par ruko yā maĩ tumhāre sāth calū̃?

Will you stay at home, or should I come with you? (informal)

Both are short clauses, so no comma is necessary. With long clauses, a comma can help readers see the boundary:

आप आज शाम तक संशोधित प्रस्ताव भेज सकते हैं, या हमारी टीम कल की बैठक में पुराना मसौदा रखेगी।

āp āj śām tak saṃśodhit prastāv bhej sakte haiṃ, yā hamārī ṭīm kal kī baiṭhak meṃ purānā masaudā rakhegī.

You can send the revised proposal by this evening, or our team will present the old draft at tomorrow's meeting. (formal)

The comma separates two lengthy independent alternatives. Do not write a comma immediately after या; the connector belongs with the second alternative.

Inclusive and exclusive readings

Like English or, bare या can be inclusive or exclusive. Context normally decides. A menu question such as चाय या कॉफ़ी? often expects one choice, but बस या मेट्रो से यहाँ पहुँच सकते हैं states that either route is possible and does not logically forbid using both on different trips.

आप रिपोर्ट हिंदी या अंग्रेज़ी में लिख सकते हैं।

āp riporṭ hindī yā aṅgrezī meṃ likh sakte haiṃ.

You may write the report in Hindi or English.

Institutional context may allow either language but require one final report. To say explicitly that both are allowed, add दोनों में or reformulate with और:

आप उत्तर हिंदी, अंग्रेज़ी या दोनों भाषाओं में दे सकते हैं।

āp uttar hindī, aṅgrezī yā donoṃ bhāṣāoṃ meṃ de sakte haiṃ.

You may answer in Hindi, English, or both languages.

To insist on exactly one option, use दोनों में से केवल एक “only one of the two.” या by itself does not encode the logic symbol XOR.

Paired या तो…या

The pair या तो…या… highlights two mutually presented alternatives, like “either…or…”:

या तो अभी निकलो, या अगली बस का इंतज़ार करो।

yā to abhī niklo, yā aglī bas kā intazār karo.

Either leave now or wait for the next bus. (informal)

Only the first या normally takes तो. The second half may be introduced by या or conversational या फिर.

या तो हम फ़ोन पर बात कर लेते हैं, या फिर शाम को मिलते हैं।

yā to ham fon par bāt kar lete haiṃ, yā phir śām ko milte haiṃ.

Either we can talk on the phone, or else we can meet this evening. (informal)

फिर makes the second choice feel like the remaining alternative. It does not literally mean “again” here. In speech, a pause often comes before the second या; in writing, a comma is natural when the two alternatives are full clauses.

उम्मीदवार या तो पहचान-पत्र प्रस्तुत करे अथवा सत्यापित डिजिटल प्रति भेजे।

ummīdvār yā to pahcān-patr prastut kare athvā satyāpit ḍijiṭal prati bheje.

The applicant must either present identification or send a verified digital copy. (formal/administrative)

Mixing या तो with formal अथवा is normal in official prose. It would sound unnecessarily administrative in a chat between friends.

Questions and uncertainty

In a direct alternative question, क्या may introduce the entire question, but it does not have to be repeated before each choice:

क्या तुम आज आओगे या कल?

kyā tum āj āoge yā kal?

Will you come today or tomorrow? (informal)

With reported uncertainty, या नहीं means “or not”:

मुझे नहीं पता कि वह बैठक में आएगी या नहीं।

mujhe nahīṃ patā ki vah baiṭhak meṃ āegī yā nahīṃ.

I don't know whether she will come to the meeting.

English distinguishes interrogative whether from alternative or. Hindi commonly uses an embedded कि…या नहीं frame or simply आएगी या नहीं. Do not translate whether mechanically with चाहे: चाहे…चाहे has a concessive “whether X or Y, regardless” meaning.

चाहे बारिश हो या धूप, दुकान सुबह नौ बजे खुलेगी।

cāhe bāriś ho yā dhūp, dukān subah nau baje khulegī.

Whether it rains or is sunny, the shop will open at nine in the morning.

The main result remains true under both alternatives; this is not a request to choose rain or sunshine.

या versus और

और includes both members; या presents alternatives. The intended real-world grouping can change the meaning dramatically:

दवा सुबह और रात को लें।

davā subah aur rāt ko leṃ.

Take the medicine in the morning and at night. (formal/polite)

दवा सुबह या रात को लें।

davā subah yā rāt ko leṃ.

Take the medicine either in the morning or at night. (formal/polite)

The first instruction requires two daily times; the second offers one of two times. Review और coordination when both members should be included.

अथवा and register

अथवा is a Sanskritized (formal) alternative coordinator. It is common on forms, examinations, rules, legal documents, and carefully written explanatory prose:

उत्तर नीली अथवा काली स्याही से लिखें।

uttar nīlī athvā kālī syāhī se likheṃ.

Write the answer in blue or black ink. (formal instruction)

Everyday speech strongly prefers या:

नीले या काले पेन से लिख देना।

nīle yā kāle pen se likh denā.

Write it with a blue or black pen. (informal)

Formal अन्यथा means “otherwise,” not simply “or,” and belongs to result/warning structures. Conversational वरना has a Persian/Urdu historical source and is the everyday “otherwise.” Urdu-influenced ख़्वाह…ख़्वाह “whether…or” is (literary/formal) and uncommon in neutral modern conversation. These forms enrich particular registers; they are not upgrades for basic या.

💡
Default to या in speech and ordinary prose. Choose अथवा for a deliberately official written register; choose या फिर when conversationally presenting a second practical option.

Formal and conversational versions

The same instruction can be calibrated without changing its core alternatives:

आवेदक प्रमाणपत्र डाक द्वारा अथवा ऑनलाइन पोर्टल के माध्यम से भेज सकता है।

āvedak pramāṇpatr ḍāk dvārā athvā onlāin porṭal ke mādhyam se bhej saktā hai.

The applicant may send the certificate by post or through the online portal. (formal/administrative)

प्रमाणपत्र डाक से भेज दो या फिर ऑनलाइन जमा कर दो।

pramāṇpatr ḍāk se bhej do yā phir onlāin jamā kar do.

Send the certificate by post, or just submit it online. (informal)

The formal sentence uses nominal expressions द्वारा and के माध्यम से; the conversational version uses direct imperatives and या फिर. Register is a property of the whole sentence, not of the conjunction alone.

Common Mistakes

1. Repeating तो in both halves

❌ या तो चाय लीजिए या तो कॉफ़ी लीजिए।

Nonstandard doubling in the neutral paired pattern — तो belongs after the first या.

✅ या तो चाय लीजिए या कॉफ़ी लीजिए।

yā to cāy lījie yā kofī lījie.

Have either tea or coffee. (polite)

2. Putting a comma after the connector

❌ अभी भुगतान करें या, कल कार्यालय आएँ।

Incorrect punctuation — या must remain attached to the second alternative.

✅ अभी भुगतान करें या कल कार्यालय आएँ।

abhī bhugtān kareṃ yā kal kāryālay āẽ.

Pay now or come to the office tomorrow. (formal/polite)

3. Copying English whether…or with चाहे in an open question

❌ मुझे बताओ चाहे तुम आओगे या नहीं।

Incorrect — चाहे marks indifference or concession, not an ordinary request for information.

✅ मुझे बताओ कि तुम आओगे या नहीं।

mujhe batāo ki tum āoge yā nahīṃ.

Tell me whether you will come or not. (informal)

4. Leaving the second alternative without its required postposition

❌ मैं बस से या मेट्रो जाऊँगा।

Incorrect for two means of travel — से attaches only to बस, while मेट्रो is left without the required postposition.

✅ मैं बस या मेट्रो से जाऊँगा।

maĩ bas yā meṭro se jāū̃gā.

I will go by bus or metro. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • या is the neutral coordinator for alternatives in conversation and ordinary writing.
  • या तो…या (फिर) foregrounds a two-way choice; use तो only in the first half.
  • Bare या can be inclusive or exclusive, so add दोनों or केवल एक when logic must be explicit.
  • A comma may separate long alternative clauses, but it does not go automatically before या or immediately after it.
  • अथवा is Sanskritized and formal; conversational Hindi prefers या and often या फिर.
