जबकि connects two finite clauses whose situations overlap in time or whose contents are deliberately contrasted. English while has the same two-way ambiguity, but English speakers still need to resist treating जबकि as a universal translation of while: everyday Hindi often chooses जब for a genuinely temporal relation and लेकिन, मगर, or पर for a plain conversational contrast. जबकि is especially useful when the speaker wants the listener to compare two complete propositions.
मैं खाना बना रही थी, जबकि आरव मेज़ लगा रहा था।
maĩ khānā banā rahī thī, jabki ārav mez lagā rahā thā.
I was cooking while Aarav was setting the table.
Here both imperfective clauses describe scenes in progress at the same time. Nothing about जबकि itself determines tense or agreement: रही थी agrees with the feminine speaker, and रहा था with masculine singular आरव. The conjunction relates the clauses; each clause keeps its own normal Hindi grammar.
The two core readings
Simultaneous situations: “while”
On its temporal reading, जबकि presents one situation as the background during which another holds or unfolds. This use is grammatical in both speech and writing, but it often sounds more planned or expository than conversational जब “when/while.” It is most natural when both clauses receive comparable attention rather than when one is merely a time-setting adjunct.
बच्चे बाहर खेल रहे थे, जबकि हम अंदर सामान बाँध रहे थे।
bacce bāhar khel rahe the, jabki ham andar sāmān bā̃dh rahe the.
The children were playing outside while we were packing indoors.
जबकि डॉक्टर मरीज़ को देख रही थीं, नर्स अगली फ़ाइल तैयार कर रही थी।
jabki ḍokṭar marīz ko dekh rahī thīṃ, nars aglī fāil taiyār kar rahī thī.
While the doctor was examining the patient, the nurse was preparing the next file.
The जबकि clause may follow or precede the other clause. A following clause is common when the first scene is already the discourse topic. An initial जबकि clause establishes a frame and is normally followed by a comma in careful writing. Hindi does not require a matching तब after temporal जबकि. The pair जब...तब... belongs to the relative-correlative system and is covered on the जब–तब time page.
Contrastive propositions: “whereas / while”
The contrastive reading is at least as important as the temporal one. Here the two situations need not happen at the same time. The clauses are compared because they differ along a salient dimension: preference, quantity, outcome, policy, or expectation. English whereas is often an excellent translation.
नेहा घर से काम करना चाहती है, जबकि उसका भाई रोज़ दफ़्तर जाना पसंद करता है।
nehā ghar se kām karnā cāhtī hai, jabki uskā bhāī roz daftar jānā pasand kartā hai.
Neha wants to work from home, whereas her brother prefers going to the office every day.
पिछले महीने बिक्री बढ़ी थी, जबकि इस महीने उसमें गिरावट आई है।
pichle mahīne bikrī baṛhī thī, jabki is mahīne usmeṃ girāvaṭ āī hai.
Sales rose last month, whereas this month they have declined.
पुराना कमरा छोटा था, जबकि नया कमरा काफ़ी खुला है।
purānā kamrā choṭā thā, jabki nayā kamrā kāfī khulā hai.
The old room was small, whereas the new room is quite spacious.
This is not the same as concession. हालाँकि बारिश हो रही थी, फिर भी हम निकले means “Although it was raining, we still went out”: the second event runs against an expectation raised by the first. By contrast, यहाँ बारिश हो रही थी, जबकि दिल्ली में धूप थी simply sets two facts against each other. See हालाँकि, यद्यपि, and फिर भी for the concessive pattern.
Clause type and position
Grammatically, जबकि introduces a finite subordinate clause, but in contrastive use the two propositions often feel discourse-equal, much like coordination. That mixed behavior explains why English translations alternate between while, whereas, and sometimes but. A जबकि clause cannot normally stand alone as a complete answer: it asks the listener to recover the proposition it is being compared with.
यह योजना अभी सस्ती लगती है, जबकि लंबे समय में इसका ख़र्च बढ़ सकता है।
yah yojnā abhī sastī lagtī hai, jabki lambe samay meṃ iskā xarc baṛh saktā hai.
This plan looks inexpensive now, whereas its cost may rise in the long run.
Initial contrastive जबकि is possible, especially in formal argument, but it generally depends on a contrast established in the preceding discourse. In isolation, putting the familiar or expected statement first and the contrasting जबकि clause second is easier to process.
जबकि समिति ने समय बढ़ाने की सिफ़ारिश की थी, मंत्रालय ने पुरानी समय-सीमा बनाए रखी।
jabki samiti ne samay baṛhāne kī sifāriś kī thī, mantrālay ne purānī samay-sīmā banāe rakhī.
Whereas the committee had recommended extending the time, the ministry retained the old deadline.
That sentence is (formal) and suits a report or policy discussion. In conversation, speakers are more likely to preserve ordinary main-clause order and use लेकिन, मगर, or पर.
Choosing among जबकि, लेकिन, मगर, and पर
| Connector | Core effect | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| जबकि | places two propositions side by side; can also mean simultaneous “while” | neutral to formal; common in explanation and writing |
| लेकिन | ordinary “but,” often correcting an expectation | neutral, speech and writing |
| मगर | ordinary “but,” often a little more conversational or expressive | neutral/informal; historically Urdu-influenced but fully established |
| पर | compact conversational “but” | informal |
| इसके विपरीत | explicitly “in contrast to this” | formal/academic, Sanskritic vocabulary |
मैंने उसे दो बार फ़ोन किया, लेकिन उसने फ़ोन नहीं उठाया।
maĩne use do bār fon kiyā, lekin usne fon nahīṃ uṭhāyā.
I called her twice, but she did not answer.
सोनल सुबह काम करती है, जबकि इमरान की पाली रात में होती है।
sonal subah kām kartī hai, jabki imrān kī pālī rāt meṃ hotī hai.
Sonal works in the morning, whereas Imran's shift is at night.
The first example reports an obstacle or disappointed expectation, so लेकिन is natural. The second constructs a balanced comparison, so जबकि fits better. The difference is not “spoken versus correct”: it is the discourse relation the speaker chooses.
Punctuation and paired wording
In careful Hindi prose, use a comma where जबकि joins two substantial clauses, especially when the second begins with the conjunction. A very short, transparent sentence may omit it, but the comma helps the reader see the clause boundary. Do not insert a full stop before जबकि if the intended construction is one sentence; starting a new sentence with जबकि is possible only when it deliberately links back to the preceding sentence, a journalistic style that beginners need not imitate.
Formal writers sometimes reinforce a balanced contrast with एक ओर...दूसरी ओर..., “on the one hand...on the other hand.” जबकि can occur inside such a passage, but it is not a required paired member and piling every marker into one sentence sounds heavy.
एक ओर किराया कम हुआ है; दूसरी ओर, बिजली का ख़र्च बढ़ गया है।
ek or kirāyā kam huā hai; dūsrī or, bijlī kā xarc baṛh gayā hai.
On the one hand, the rent has decreased; on the other hand, the electricity cost has risen.
This (formal) alternative makes the architecture of a longer argument explicit. In ordinary conversation, two clauses with जबकि or लेकिन are more natural.
Common Mistakes
1. Using जबकि for every temporal “while”
❌ जबकि मैं घर पहुँचा, सब सो चुके थे।
Incorrect as the neutral choice — this is a simple time frame, not two simultaneous situations being compared.
✅ जब मैं घर पहुँचा, सब सो चुके थे।
jab maĩ ghar pahũcā, sab so cuke the.
When I got home, everyone had already gone to sleep.
2. Confusing contrast with concession
❌ जबकि बारिश हो रही थी, फिर भी हम टहलने निकले।
Awkward — जबकि and फिर भी package two different relations here.
✅ हालाँकि बारिश हो रही थी, फिर भी हम टहलने निकले।
hālā̃ki bāriś ho rahī thī, phir bhī ham ṭahalne nikle.
Although it was raining, we still went out for a walk.
3. Copying English “while” where Hindi needs a plain contrast
❌ मैं सहमत हूँ, जबकि मुझे एक चिंता है।
Unnatural for ‘I agree, but I have one concern’ — the clauses are not a balanced comparison.
✅ मैं सहमत हूँ, लेकिन मुझे एक चिंता है।
maĩ sahmat hū̃, lekin mujhe ek cintā hai.
I agree, but I have one concern.
4. Doubling contrast markers mechanically
❌ मीरा बस से गई, लेकिन जबकि अर्जुन पैदल गया।
Incorrect — do not stack लेकिन and जबकि at the same clause boundary.
✅ मीरा बस से गई, जबकि अर्जुन पैदल गया।
mīrā bas se gaī, jabki arjun paidal gayā.
Meera went by bus, whereas Arjun went on foot.
Key Takeaways
- जबकि relates two finite clauses and means either simultaneous “while” or contrastive “whereas.”
- It favors parallel, comparable propositions; plain जब or लेकिन may be more natural when there is no such balance.
- It needs no automatic partner such as तब or फिर भी.
- The conjunction controls the relation between clauses, not their tense, gender, number, or agreement.
- In careful prose, a comma normally marks the boundary between two substantial clauses.
