As manner adverbs, ऐसे (aise) means “like this/in this way,” वैसे (vaise) means “like that/in that way,” and कैसे (kaise) asks “how?” They normally occur before the event predicate and do not agree with the subject or object. Their shapes are related to the adjective series ऐसा/वैसा/कैसा, but the adverbial forms have become the standard invariant way to describe how an action is performed.
The basic manner series
| Form | Core function | Typical English rendering |
|---|---|---|
| ऐसे | demonstrates a proximal or currently shown manner | like this, this way |
| वैसे | refers to a distal, mentioned, or contrasted manner | like that, that way |
| कैसे | asks for manner, means, or an explanation | how? |
ढक्कन ऐसे खोलो, ज़ोर से मत खींचो।
ḍhakkan aise kholo, zor se mat khīñco.
Open the lid like this; don't pull hard.
मैंने फ़ॉर्म वैसे ही भरा जैसे आपने बताया था।
maĩne form vaise hī bharā jaise āpne batāyā thā.
I filled out the form exactly as you had explained.
तुमने इतनी जल्दी टिकट कैसे ढूँढ़ लिया?
tumne itnī jaldī ṭikaṭ kaise ḍhū̃ṛh liyā?
How did you find a ticket so quickly?
The question word stays where the answer's manner expression would stand: तुमने टिकट ऑनलाइन ढूँढ़ लिया → तुमने टिकट कैसे ढूँढ़ लिया? English moves how to the front; neutral Hindi does not. Clause-initial कैसे तुमने... is marked and unsuitable as the default pattern.
Adverbial ऐसे versus adjectival ऐसा
When the series describes a noun, it behaves as a declinable adjective or determiner: ऐसा सवाल “such a question,” ऐसी बात “such a thing,” ऐसे लोग “such people.” When it describes an action, the conventional adverbial form is ऐसे, regardless of the gender or number of participants.
ऐसी बातें बच्चों के सामने मत कहो।
aisī bāteṃ baccoṃ ke sāmne mat kaho.
Don't say such things in front of the children.
बच्चियों से ऐसे मत बोलो।
bacciyoṃ se aise mat bolo.
Don't speak to the girls like that.
In the first sentence, feminine plural ऐसी belongs inside the noun phrase ऐसी बातें. In the second, ऐसे modifies बोलो and is invariant; it does not become ऐसी merely because बच्चियों is feminine plural.
Neutral position and predicate scope
Manner usually sits close to the action it modifies, before the verb or complex predicate. A broad time or place expression normally comes earlier.
वह बैठकों में हमेशा बहुत शांति से बोलती है।
vah baiṭhkoṃ meṃ hameśā bahut śānti se boltī hai.
She always speaks very calmly in meetings.
यह मशीन ऐसे चालू होती है।
yah maśīn aise cālū hotī hai.
This machine starts like this.
In the first example, बैठक में sets the domain, हमेशा gives frequency, and बहुत शांति से describes the manner of speaking. Large-scale rearrangements can change topic and focus, but those belong to Word Order and Information Structure rather than the basic manner pattern.
Placing a manner expression after a complete finite predicate can work as a spoken afterthought, but repeated sentence-final stacking is unnatural in neutral prose. Hindi is predicate-final; learners should build the manner into the predicate domain before the verb.
Scope: the position of भी and ही matters
Particles follow the constituent they focus. The next pair describes the same manner but changes which alternative is being added.
निधि भी ऐसे समझाती है।
nidhi bhī aise samjhātī hai.
Nidhi also explains it this way. (Nidhi is an additional explainer)
निधि ऐसे भी समझाती है।
nidhi aise bhī samjhātī hai.
Nidhi explains it this way too. (this is an additional method)
With ही, ऐसे ही can mean “just like this,” “in exactly this way,” or contextually “for no special reason/as it is.” Its meaning is not obtained by mechanically translating ही as only in every sentence.
तस्वीर को ऐसे ही रहने दो।
tasvīr ko aise hī rahne do.
Leave the picture just as it is.
Hindi does not need an English-style “-ly” class
English derives many manner adverbs from adjectives: quiet → quietly, formal → formally. Hindi distributes this work across several constructions.
| Strategy | Example | Meaning or register |
|---|---|---|
| Lexical/bare manner form | जल्दी, धीरे | quickly, slowly |
| Noun + से | ध्यान से, प्यार से | carefully, affectionately |
| Adjective + तरह से | अच्छी तरह से | well / in a good way |
| Adjective + रूप से | औपचारिक रूप से | formally (formal/written) |
| Fixed lexical item | चुपचाप | quietly, without making a fuss |
| Participial phrase | हँसते हुए | while laughing / laughingly |
कृपया पता ध्यान से लिखिए।
kripyā patā dhyān se likhie.
Please write the address carefully.
बच्चा चुपचाप कमरे से बाहर निकल गया।
baccā cupcāp kamre se bāhar nikal gayā.
The child quietly slipped out of the room.
निर्णय की घोषणा कल औपचारिक रूप से की जाएगी।
nirṇay kī ghoṣṇā kal aupcārik rūp se kī jāegī.
The decision will be announced formally tomorrow. (formal)
These are not interchangeable shells. ध्यान से conventionally means “carefully/attentively,” चुपचाप adds quietness and lack of protest or fuss, and रूप से is productive but often sounds bureaucratic or formal when a simpler everyday expression exists. See तरह and रूप से adverbials for their internal case and register contrasts.
Degree and precision of manner
Manner can itself be modified. बिल्कुल ऐसे means “exactly like this,” कुछ ऐसे means “something like this,” and लगभग वैसे means “approximately that way.” Ordinary बहुत does not directly quantify deictic ऐसे; it normally modifies a scalar manner word: बहुत धीरे, बहुत ध्यान से.
रस्सी को बिल्कुल ऐसे बाँधना है।
rassī ko bilkul aise bā̃dhnā hai.
The rope has to be tied exactly like this.
वह आज कुछ अलग ढंग से बात कर रहा था।
vah āj kuch alag ḍhaṅg se bāt kar rahā thā.
He was speaking in a somewhat different way today.
The second example illustrates an oblique noun phrase: ढंग से “in a manner.” Hindi frequently recruits nouns and postpositions where English chooses a dedicated adverb.
Conventional uses of वैसे and कैसे
Clause-initial वैसे can be a discourse marker meaning “by the way,” “generally,” or “as it happens.” This is common in neutral and (informal) conversation and no longer simply points to a demonstrated physical manner.
वैसे, तुम कल हमारे साथ आ रहे हो?
vaise, tum kal hamāre sāth ā rahe ho?
By the way, are you coming with us tomorrow?
The idiomatic question ऐसे कैसे चलेगा? challenges the acceptability of a situation rather than asking literally how something moves.
तुम हर बार देर से आओगे तो ऐसे कैसे चलेगा?
tum har bār der se āoge to aise kaise calegā?
If you arrive late every time, how is this supposed to work?
These conventional meanings must be learned from whole constructions; a word-for-word English gloss misses their pragmatic force.
Common Mistakes
Making adverbial ऐसे agree with a feminine participant
❌ उसने बच्ची से ऐसी बात की।
Incorrect for the intended ‘she spoke to the girl in this way’ — ऐसी modifies the overt feminine noun बात and means ‘such a thing,’ rather than describing the manner.
✅ उसने बच्ची से ऐसे बात की।
usne baccī se aise bāt kī.
She spoke to the girl in this way.
Adding an unnecessary English-style suffix or postposition
❌ आपने यह कैसे से किया?
Incorrect — adverbial कैसे already means ‘how’; do not add से.
✅ आपने यह कैसे किया?
āpne yah kaise kiyā?
How did you do this?
Making a focused manner adverb agree with the object
❌ वह समस्या ऐसी भी हल कर सकती है।
Incorrect — adverbial ऐसे remains invariant before भी; feminine समस्या does not make it ऐसी.
✅ वह समस्या ऐसे भी हल कर सकती है।
vah samasyā aise bhī hal kar saktī hai.
She can solve the problem this way too.
Leaving a stack of manner phrases after the verb
❌ उसने जवाब दिया धीरे ध्यान से।
Incorrect neutral order — the competing manner expressions cannot simply be stacked after the completed predicate.
✅ उसने बहुत ध्यान से जवाब दिया।
usne bahut dhyān se javāb diyā.
She answered very carefully.
Key Takeaways
- Adverbial ऐसे/वैसे/कैसे describe manner and remain invariant; adjectival ऐसा/ऐसे/ऐसी agree with a noun.
- Neutral Hindi places manner before the final event predicate and normally leaves कैसे in the answer position.
- Particle position determines focus: निधि भी ऐसे and निधि ऐसे भी have different additive scopes.
- Hindi manner expressions include lexical items, noun-plus-से phrases, तरह/रूप से constructions, participles, and fixed idioms—not one universal -ly formation.
