Hindi X के अंदर locates something within X's boundary, while X के बाहर locates it beyond that boundary: कमरे के अंदर “inside the room,” घर के बाहर “outside the house.” These are compound spatial postpositions: the reference object comes first in an oblique/genitive-shaped phrase, followed by अंदर or बाहर.
Bare अंदर and बाहर can instead mean “inside/in” and “outside/out” when the setting already supplies the reference point. Simple में is the ordinary marker of containment; के अंदर more explicitly profiles the interior as opposed to the boundary or exterior.
A named boundary: X के अंदर and X के बाहर
बच्चे घर के अंदर खेल रहे हैं।
bacce ghar ke andar khel rahe haiṃ.
The children are playing inside the house.
उनकी साइकिलें घर के बाहर खड़ी हैं।
unkī sāikileṃ ghar ke bāhar khaṛī haiṃ.
Their bicycles are standing outside the house.
The landmark घर is explicit in both. अंदर selects the region enclosed by it; बाहर selects the region beyond it. Neither expression alone says whether anything is moving—खेल रहे हैं and खड़ी हैं make these stationary locations.
Masculine -आ nouns become oblique before के:
| Direct noun | Interior | Exterior |
|---|---|---|
| कमरा | कमरे के अंदर | कमरे के बाहर |
| डिब्बा | डिब्बे के अंदर | डिब्बे के बाहर |
| अलमारियाँ | अलमारियों के अंदर | अलमारियों के बाहर |
| मकान | मकान के अंदर | मकान के बाहर |
पुराने डिब्बे के अंदर कुछ तस्वीरें मिलीं।
purāne ḍibbe ke andar kuch tasvīreṃ milīṃ.
Some photographs were found inside the old box.
Both adjective पुराने and noun डिब्बे show the oblique environment.
Bare अंदर and बाहर
When the boundary is obvious from the situation, omit the landmark:
बारिश शुरू हो गई है; सब लोग अंदर आ जाइए।
bāriś śurū ho gaī hai; sab log andar ā jāie.
It has started raining; everyone, please come inside.
मैं बाहर इंतज़ार करूँगा; तुम आराम से सामान बाँध लो।
maĩ bāhar intazār karū̃gā; tum ārām se sāmān bā̃dh lo.
I'll wait outside; take your time packing. (male speaker, informal addressee)
Here the current building or room supplies the reference boundary. Bare अंदर/बाहर can be locative (वह बाहर है) or directional (वह बाहर गया). The verb supplies position versus path.
With an explicit noun, the relation is anchored again:
कुत्ता आँगन के बाहर निकल गया।
kuttā ā̃gan ke bāhar nikal gayā.
The dog went out beyond the courtyard.
The phrase identifies which boundary was crossed. Bare बाहर निकल गया would merely mean “went out” relative to the understood setting.
Stationary and directional minimal pairs
The postpositional phrase itself does not inflect for motion. Compare:
सुरक्षा-कर्मी इमारत के अंदर हैं।
surakṣā-karmī imārat ke andar haiṃ.
The security guards are inside the building.
सुरक्षा-कर्मी इमारत के अंदर गए।
surakṣā-karmī imārat ke andar gae.
The security guards went inside the building.
Copula हैं gives stationary location; motion verb गए gives a goal. Likewise:
मेहमान मुख्य द्वार के बाहर खड़े थे।
mehmān mukhya dvār ke bāhar khaṛe the.
The guests were standing outside the main entrance.
मेहमान मुख्य द्वार के बाहर चले गए।
mehmān mukhya dvār ke bāhar cale gae.
The guests went outside the main entrance area.
English sometimes distinguishes in/into or out/outside through preposition choice. Hindi often leaves that distinction to होना, जाना, आना, निकलना, and other predicates.
में versus के अंदर
Simple में normally states containment without contrasting the boundary:
चाबियाँ दराज़ में हैं।
cābiyā̃ darāz meṃ haiṃ.
The keys are in the drawer. (neutral containment)
के अंदर makes the interior explicit, often because the search area or boundary matters:
चाबियाँ दराज़ के अंदर ही हैं, मेज़ पर नहीं।
cābiyā̃ darāz ke andar hī haiṃ, mez par nahīṃ.
The keys are inside the drawer itself, not on the table.
The two expressions can describe the same physical arrangement. The difference is construal: दराज़ में simply locates the keys; दराज़ के अंदर contrasts the enclosed region with other possible locations. For abstract domains and routine containment, में remains the normal choice; see में for containment and domains.
यह जानकारी रिपोर्ट में है।
yah jānkārī riporṭ meṃ hai.
This information is in the report.
Using रिपोर्ट के अंदर here is possible only if the report is being treated emphatically as a physical or bounded object; it is not the neutral way to say that information appears in a text.
Pronoun complements use possessive forms
Compound postpositions take possessive-like pronoun forms, not a citation pronoun plus extra के:
| Reference | Interior | Exterior |
|---|---|---|
| I / me | मेरे अंदर | मेरे बाहर |
| he, she, it | उसके अंदर | उसके बाहर |
| these | इनके अंदर | इनके बाहर |
| you (respectful) | आपके अंदर | आपके बाहर |
इसके अंदर दो अलग खाने हैं और इसके बाहर नाम लिखा है।
iske andar do alag khāne haiṃ aur iske bāhar nām likhā hai.
It has two separate compartments inside, and a name is written on its outside.
मेरे अंदर अब इतना डर नहीं है।
mere andar ab itnā ḍar nahīṃ hai.
There isn't that much fear inside me now.
The second is a productive metaphor based on an internal emotional space. This page does not attempt to list unrelated idioms with अंदर/बाहर.
Source and path with से
Add से after the full location to express source or a path through that region:
रीना कमरे के अंदर से अपना बैग ले आई।
rīnā kamre ke andar se apnā baig le āī.
Reena brought her bag from inside the room.
घर के बाहर से बच्चों की आवाज़ आ रही थी।
ghar ke bāhar se baccoṃ kī āvāz ā rahī thī.
Children's voices were coming from outside the house.
Bare अंदर से and बाहर से are natural when the reference location is understood: दरवाज़ा अंदर से बंद है “the door is locked from the inside.” The final से marks source, path, or side; it does not replace the landmark-building के.
Temporal “within”
समय + के अंदर can impose a deadline:
कृपया दो दिनों के अंदर जवाब भेज दीजिए।
kripyā do dinoṃ ke andar javāb bhej dījie.
Please send a reply within two days.
This is a productive boundary metaphor: completion must occur before the interval closes. Simple दो दिनों में can also mean “within/in two days,” and often sounds less emphatic; के अंदर profiles the outer deadline.
A natural boundary dialogue
गार्ड: कृपया रेखा के बाहर रुकिए। यात्री: क्या बच्चे मेरे साथ अंदर आ सकते हैं? गार्ड: हाँ, लेकिन बैग बाहर ही रखिए।
gārḍ: kripyā rekhā ke bāhar rukie. yātrī: kyā bacce mere sāth andar ā sakte haiṃ? gārḍ: hā̃, lekin baig bāhar hī rakhie.
Guard: Please wait outside the line. Traveler: Can the children come inside with me? Guard: Yes, but leave the bags outside.
Explicit रेखा के बाहर anchors the first boundary. Once the controlled area is established, bare अंदर and बाहर are enough.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English preposition-first order
❌ के बाहर घर टैक्सी खड़ी है।
Incorrect — the landmark घर must precede के बाहर.
✅ घर के बाहर एक टैक्सी खड़ी है।
ghar ke bāhar ek ṭaiksī khaṛī hai.
A taxi is parked outside the house.
2. Leaving a masculine -आ noun direct
❌ कमरा के अंदर बहुत अँधेरा है।
Incorrect — कमरा becomes oblique कमरे before के.
✅ उस कमरे के अंदर बहुत अँधेरा है।
us kamre ke andar bahut ãdherā hai.
It is very dark inside that room.
3. Adding redundant के after a pronoun
❌ उसके के बाहर पता लिखा है।
Incorrect — उसके already supplies the required pronominal form.
✅ उसके बाहर पूरा पता लिखा है।
uske bāhar pūrā patā likhā hai.
The full address is written on its outside.
4. Replacing every English “in” with के अंदर
❌ उसने आसान हिंदी के अंदर जवाब दिया।
Incorrect for a language domain — ordinary में is required.
✅ उसने आसान हिंदी में जवाब दिया।
usne āsān hindī meṃ javāb diyā.
He or she answered in simple Hindi.
