Neutral modern Hindi uses के नीचे ke nīce for “under” or “below” an explicit landmark, the inverse of के ऊपर. तले tale occupies some of the same semantic space but has a narrower, more literary or formulaic distribution: खुले आसमान तले khule āsmān tale “under the open sky,” दबाव तले dabāv tale “under pressure.”
The forms are not simple stylistic twins. के नीचे is productive in everyday spatial descriptions; तले often belongs to elevated prose, headlines, songs, or established expressions.
के नीचे: ordinary under and below
के नीचे locates something in the lower region of a person or object, with or without direct contact.
बिल्ली मेज़ के नीचे सो रही है।
billī mez ke nīce so rahī hai.
The cat is sleeping under the table.
दस्तावेज़ों के नीचे मेरी चाबी दब गई है।
dastāvezoṃ ke nīce merī cābī dab gaī hai.
My key has been trapped under the documents.
पुल के नीचे पानी बहुत तेज़ बह रहा है।
pul ke nīce pānī bahut tez bah rahā hai.
The water is flowing very fast under the bridge.
The cat is separated from the tabletop, the key is in contact with documents, and water passes through the lower region of the bridge. के नीचे permits all three because its core meaning is relative vertical position, not a specific contact relation.
Oblique complements and pronouns
The complement of के नीचे is oblique.
| Direct form | Below phrase |
|---|---|
| लड़का laṛkā | लड़के के नीचे laṛke ke nīce |
| बच्चे bacce | बच्चों के नीचे baccoṃ ke nīce |
| पेड़ peṛ | पेड़ के नीचे peṛ ke nīce |
| किताबें kitābeṃ | किताबों के नीचे kitāboṃ ke nīce |
Pronouns use मेरे नीचे, हमारे नीचे, तुम्हारे नीचे, आपके नीचे, इसके/उसके नीचे, इनके/उनके नीचे.
मेरे नीचे वाले फ़्लैट में एक परिवार रहता है।
mere nīce vāle flaiṭ meṃ ek parivār rahtā hai.
A family lives in the apartment below mine.
उस नक्शे के नीचे तारीख़ भी लिखी है।
us nakśe ke nīce tārīx bhī likhī hai.
The date is also written below that map.
The second example is page layout rather than physical suspension, a productive extension of the vertical axis.
Bare नीचे
Without a landmark, नीचे functions as “down, below, downstairs.”
नीचे आ जाओ; खाना तैयार है।
nīce ā jāo; khānā taiyār hai.
Come downstairs; the food is ready. (informal)
कृपया नीचे दिए गए निर्देश पढ़ें।
kripyā nīce die gae nirdeś paṛheṃ.
Please read the instructions given below. (formal)
Bare नीचे से means “from below,” while X के नीचे से marks a path from under X: पुल के नीचे से निकलना “pass under the bridge.”
तले: literary and formulaic “under”
तले appears directly after an oblique complement, normally without के. The oblique may be visible in an adjective or noun, as in पुराने बरगद तले and पैरों तले. It is productive only within a restricted elevated style and a set of familiar collocations.
लोग खुले आसमान तले रात बिताने को मजबूर थे।
log khule āsmān tale rāt bitāne ko majbūr the.
People were forced to spend the night under the open sky. (formal/literary)
पुराने बरगद तले गाँव की बैठक हुई।
purāne bargad tale gā̃v kī baiṭhak huī.
The village meeting was held beneath the old banyan tree. (literary)
In everyday conversation, खुले आसमान के नीचे and बरगद के नीचे are natural replacements. Using तले for an ordinary lost object—मेज़ तले चाबी है—is understandable but conspicuously literary.
Pressure, protection, and control
Both downward forms can become abstract. दबाव में is the everyday “under pressure”; दबाव तले is compressed and journalistic or literary (formal/literary). के नीचे can describe hierarchy, though it may sound blunt when applied to people.
कंपनी भारी कर्ज़ के दबाव तले काम कर रही है।
kampanī bhārī karz ke dabāv tale kām kar rahī hai.
The company is operating under the pressure of heavy debt. (formal)
इस अधिकारी के नीचे तीन अलग टीमें काम करती हैं।
is adhikārī ke nīce tīn alag ṭīmeṃ kām kartī haiṃ.
Three separate teams work under this officer.
For respectful organizational prose, इस अधिकारी के अधीन “under this officer's authority” (formal) may be preferable. That choice is lexical and register-sensitive; physical के नीचे remains freely compositional.
Fixed idioms with तले
The expression पैरों तले ज़मीन खिसकना literally says “the ground slipped from under one's feet” and means to be profoundly shocked.
नौकरी जाने की ख़बर सुनकर उसके पैरों तले ज़मीन खिसक गई।
naukrī jāne kī xabar sunkar uske pairoṃ tale zamīn khisak gaī.
When he heard that he had lost his job, the ground fell away beneath his feet.
Here तले gives the idiom a compressed literary or journalistic shape. Everyday Hindi also very naturally says उसके पैरों के नीचे से ज़मीन खिसक गई; the added से presents the ground as moving out from under the feet. Both versions are established, but their style and grammatical packaging differ.

The shop below that room is empty.
3. Using a citation-form pronoun
❌ वह मैं के नीचे रहता है।
Incorrect: use the postpositional form मेरे.
✅ वह मेरे नीचे रहता है।
vah mere nīce rahtā hai.
He lives below me.
4. Confusing “under” with “inside”
❌ कागज़ दराज़ के नीचे हैं।

✅ कागज़ दराज़ में हैं।
kāgaz darāz meṃ haiṃ.
The papers are in the drawer.
