The compound postposition के पीछे ke pīche means “behind” a person, object, or place. Its physical meaning extends naturally to following, pursuit, hidden causes, and motives: what stands “behind” a decision is the force or intention that explains it.
English uses behind for many of the same metaphors, but Hindi still requires its complement to come first and take the appropriate oblique or pronoun form.
Physical position behind a landmark
के पीछे locates something on the rear side of a reference point.
घर के पीछे एक छोटा-सा बगीचा है।
ghar ke pīche ek choṭā-sā bagīcā hai.
There is a small garden behind the house.
बच्चा परदे के पीछे छिप गया।
baccā parde ke pīche chip gayā.
The child hid behind the curtain.
अपना बैग सीट के पीछे रख दो।
apnā baig sīṭ ke pīche rakh do.
Put your bag behind the seat. (informal)
The construction identifies a rear region, not simple proximity. घर के पास means “near the house”; घर के पीछे specifies which side.
Oblique nouns and pronouns
Changing nouns take their oblique form before the compound postposition.
| Direct form | Behind phrase |
|---|---|
| लड़का laṛkā | लड़के के पीछे laṛke ke pīche |
| बच्चे bacce | बच्चों के पीछे baccoṃ ke pīche |
| दीवार dīvār | दीवार के पीछे dīvār ke pīche |
| दुकानें dukāneṃ | दुकानों के पीछे dukānoṃ ke pīche |
Pronouns use possessive-like masculine oblique forms: मेरे पीछे, हमारे पीछे, तुम्हारे पीछे, आपके पीछे, इसके/उसके पीछे, इनके/उनके पीछे.
मेरे पीछे कौन खड़ा है?
mere pīche kaun khaṛā hai?
Who is standing behind me?
एक काली गाड़ी काफ़ी देर से हमारे पीछे थी।
ek kālī gāṛī kāfī der se hamāre pīche thī.
A black car had been behind us for quite a while.
The second sentence can imply mere traffic position or suspicious following; context supplies the interpretation.
Following and pursuit
With a motion verb, a rear position becomes a path of following or chasing.
तुम मेरे पीछे-पीछे आओ, रास्ता थोड़ा मुश्किल है।
tum mere pīche-pīche āo, rāstā thoṛā muśkil hai.
Follow right behind me; the route is a little difficult. (informal)
पुलिस चोर के पीछे दौड़ी, लेकिन वह गली में ग़ायब हो गया।
pulis cor ke pīche dauṛī, lekin vah galī meṃ ġāyab ho gayā.
The police ran after the thief, but he disappeared into an alley.
Reduplicated पीछे-पीछे emphasizes close following along the same path. With animate complements and pursuit verbs, English often prefers “after” rather than “behind.” This is still a productive spatial extension.
Motive and underlying explanation
An event, plan, or action can be treated as the visible front of a hidden force. X के पीछे then means “behind X” in the sense of motive, reasoning, effort, or responsible influence.
इस फ़ैसले के पीछे असली कारण क्या है?
is faisle ke pīche aslī kāraṇ kyā hai?
What is the real reason behind this decision?
उसकी मदद के पीछे कोई निजी स्वार्थ नहीं था।
uskī madad ke pīche koī nijī svārth nahīṃ thā.
There was no personal self-interest behind his help.
इस सफलता के पीछे पूरी टीम की मेहनत है।
is safaltā ke pīche pūrī ṭīm kī mehnat hai.
The whole team's hard work lies behind this success.
This metaphor foregrounds an underlying explanation. It does not replace direct causal के कारण in every sentence. बारिश के कारण मैच रद्द हुआ simply states that rain caused the cancellation; मैच रद्द होने के पीछे क्या कारण था? asks for the explanation underlying the decision or outcome.
Agency and hidden responsibility
In questions and reports, के पीछे कौन है can ask who planned, financed, inspired, or secretly caused something. It often carries suspicion, so it is not a neutral substitute for naming an ordinary agent.
पुलिस पता लगा रही है कि हमले के पीछे कौन था।
pulis patā lagā rahī hai ki hamle ke pīche kaun thā.
The police are investigating who was behind the attack. (formal/news register)
इस नई पहल के पीछे स्थानीय शिक्षक थे।
is naī pahal ke pīche sthānīya śikṣak the.
Local teachers were behind this new initiative. (formal)
The first suggests concealed responsibility; the second neutrally credits the people who originated the initiative. Predicate and context determine the evaluative tone.
Idiomatic पीछे constructions
Several frequent predicates contain पीछे but must be learned as constructions. किसी के पीछे पड़ना means to pursue, nag, or persistently pressure someone (informal); पीछे रह जाना means “fall/remain behind”; पीछे हटना means “step back” or figuratively “back down.”
वह कई दिनों से मेरे पीछे पड़ा है कि मैं उसकी मदद करूँ।
vah kaī dinoṃ se mere pīche paṛā hai ki maĩ uskī madad karū̃.
He's been after me for days to help him. (informal)
This meaning is not generated from location alone. The lexical predicate पीछे पड़ना plus a person complement conveys persistent pursuit or pressure. By contrast, वह मेरे पीछे खड़ा है is a fully compositional spatial description.
पीछे versus के बाद
Hindi does not normally use के पीछे for temporal “after.” Sequence uses के बाद.
बैठक के बाद हम साथ में खाना खाएँगे।
baiṭhak ke bād ham sāth meṃ khānā khāẽge.
We'll eat together after the meeting.
Use बस के पीछे दूसरी गाड़ी थी for a car physically behind a bus, but बस के बाद दूसरी गाड़ी आई for a second vehicle arriving later. See के बाद for sequence.
A natural exchange
चाबियाँ कहाँ हैं? — शायद लैपटॉप के पीछे; मैंने वहीं रखी थीं।
cābiyā̃ kahā̃ haiṃ? — śāyad laipṭop ke pīche; maĩne vahīṃ rakhī thīṃ.
Where are the keys? — Maybe behind the laptop; I put them there.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the postposition before its landmark
❌ के पीछे घर एक रास्ता है।
Incorrect: the landmark comes before के पीछे.
✅ घर के पीछे एक रास्ता है।
ghar ke pīche ek rāstā hai.
There is a path behind the house.
2. Leaving a masculine -आ noun direct
❌ कुत्ता उस लड़का के पीछे भागा।
Incorrect: लड़का becomes oblique लड़के.
✅ कुत्ता उस लड़के के पीछे भागा।
kuttā us laṛke ke pīche bhāgā.
The dog ran after that boy.
3. Using a citation-form pronoun
❌ वह मैं के पीछे बैठा है।
Incorrect: use the postpositional form मेरे.
✅ वह मेरे पीछे बैठा है।
vah mere pīche baiṭhā hai.
He is sitting behind me.
4. Using spatial पीछे for temporal “after”
❌ कक्षा के पीछे मुझे फ़ोन करना।
Incorrect for sequence: use के बाद.
✅ कक्षा के बाद मुझे फ़ोन करना।
kakṣā ke bād mujhe fon karnā.
Call me after class. (informal)
