Pronouns combine with से se and में meṃ through conventional fused forms: मुझसे “from/with/than me,” उससे “from/with/than him, her, or it,” हममें “in/among us,” and उनमें “in/among them.” The stem preserves person, number, deixis, and sometimes honorificity.
The postposition supplies the relationship. से can mark source, separation, means, comparison, or an interlocutor; में can mark containment, membership, or an internal quality.
Full paradigm
| Direct | With से | With में |
|---|---|---|
These combinations are written as one word. Do not write मुझ से or उस में in ordinary edited Hindi.
से with different meanings
यह पार्सल मुझसे नहीं, रीना से आया है।
yah pārsal mujhse nahīṃ, rīnā se āyā hai.
This parcel came from Reena, not from me.
क्या तुमने उससे इस बारे में बात की?
kyā tumne usse is bāre meṃ bāt kī?
Did you speak with him/her about this? (familiar)
रीना हमसे तेज़ दौड़ती है।
rīnā hamse tez dauṛtī hai.
Reena runs faster than we do.
Source मुझसे, interlocutor उससे, and comparison standard हमसे look identical. Predicate and context identify the role. See से as source and separation for the broader semantic network.
With a human participant, English with is not enough to predict the form. उससे बात करना means “talk with him/her,” but companionship is उसके साथ जाना “go with him/her.”
में for containment and membership
मुझमें अब बहस करने की ताक़त नहीं है।
mujhmeṃ ab bahas karne kī tāqat nahīṃ hai.
I don't have the energy to argue now.
हममें से कोई भी रास्ता नहीं जानता था।
hammeṃ se koī bhī rāstā nahīṃ jāntā thā.
None of us knew the way.
इनमें से तुम्हारी फ़ाइल कौन-सी है?
inmeṃ se tumhārī fāil kaun-sī hai?
Which of these is your file? (familiar)
हममें से and इनमें से extract members from a set. मुझमें ताक़त treats a quality as located within a person. These are productive extensions of containment, not literal rooms.
Number and honorificity
Singular उससे/उसमें contrasts with plural उनसे/उनमें. A single respected third person uses plural-honorific उनसे/उनमें.
वे हमारी दादी हैं; हमने उनसे यह कहानी सुनी थी।
ve hamārī dādī haiṃ; hamne unse yah kahānī sunī thī.
She is our grandmother; we heard this story from her. (respectful singular)
Non-honorific वह मेरी बहन है would continue with उससे. Social respect therefore changes both agreement and the oblique pronoun.
The near series behaves in parallel: singular इससे/इसमें contrasts with plural or honorific इनसे/इनमें. Colloquial direct ये may be singular, so agreement and context—not pronunciation alone—determine whether its later form is इससे or इनसे.
ये मशीन नई है; इससे आवाज़ कम आती है।
ye maśīn naī hai; isse āvāz kam ātī hai.
This machine is new; it makes less noise. (colloquial singular)
Formal and informal minimal pair
मैं तुझसे बाद में बात करूँगा।
maĩ tujhse bād meṃ bāt karū̃gā.
I'll talk to you later. (intimate singular, male speaker)
मैं आपसे बाद में बात करूँगा।
maĩ āpse bād meṃ bāt karū̃gā.
I'll speak with you later. (respectful, male speaker)
तुझसे retains intimate तू social meaning; आपसे retains respectful आप and requires हैं whenever that addressee later controls agreement.
Reflexive “self”
Ordinary मुझमें/आपमें means “in me/you.” Reflexive reference back to the clause subject often uses अपने आप में “in itself/oneself” or खुद से “with/by oneself,” depending on meaning.
यह योजना अपने आप में पूरी नहीं है।
yah yojnā apne āp meṃ pūrī nahīṃ hai.
This plan is not complete in itself.
English by myself may mean “alone,” expressed by अकेले, rather than instrumental मुझसे. Translate the relationship, not the English preposition.
A dialogue: relationship and number
मैडम, क्या मैं आपसे बात कर सकता हूँ? — हाँ। तुम दोनों में से किसको मदद चाहिए?
maiḍam, kyā maĩ āpse bāt kar saktā hū̃? — hā̃. tum donoṃ meṃ se kisko madad cāhie?
Ma'am, may I speak with you? — Yes. Which of you two needs help? (respectful singular, then familiar plural)
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping direct मैं before से
❌ यह काम मैं से नहीं होगा।
Incorrect: मैं becomes मुझ before से.
✅ यह काम मुझसे नहीं होगा।
yah kām mujhse nahīṃ hogā.
I won't be able to do this work.
2. Inventing तुम्हसे
❌ मैं तुम्हसे कल मिलूँगा।
Incorrect: standard Hindi uses तुमसे.
✅ मैं तुमसे कल मिलूँगा।
maĩ tumse kal milū̃gā.
I'll meet you tomorrow. (familiar, male speaker)
3. Confusing singular and plural demonstratives
❌ ये लोग नए हैं; मैंने उससे बात की।
Incorrect for speaking with the group: plural ये लोग requires उनसे.
✅ ये लोग नए हैं; मैंने उनसे बात की।
ye log nae haiṃ; maĩne unse bāt kī.
These people are new; I spoke with them.
4. Using intimate तुझ with a stranger
❌ सर, क्या मैं तुझसे बात कर सकता हूँ?
Inappropriate default: use respectful आपसे with an unfamiliar adult.
✅ सर, क्या मैं आपसे बात कर सकता हूँ?
sar, kyā maĩ āpse bāt kar saktā hū̃?
Sir, may I speak with you? (male speaker)
