से as instrument and means

Instrumental से se marks the tool, means, route, or method through which an action is carried out: चाकू से cākū se “with a knife,” बस से bas se “by bus,” ईमेल से īmel se “by email.” It answers “using what?” or “by what means?” rather than “together with whom?”

Like every simple postposition, से follows an oblique complement. Its instrumental meaning is historically and conceptually related to source—an action proceeds from or through a means—but contemporary learners should distinguish it from source and separation से in context.

Physical tools

Concrete instruments combine productively with से.

रोटी को चाकू से काट लो।

roṭī ko cākū se kāṭ lo.

Cut the flatbread with a knife. (informal)

उसने पेंसिल से पता लिख लिया।

usne peṃsil se patā likh liyā.

She wrote down the address in pencil.

The tool is neither an agent nor a companion. English with covers both instrument and accompaniment; Hindi normally separates instrumental से from comitative के साथ.

Direct formInstrumental phrase
हथौड़ा hathauṛāहथौड़े से hathauṛe se
डंडा ḍaṇḍāडंडे से ḍaṇḍe se
औज़ार auzār (singular)औज़ार से auzār se
औज़ार auzār (plural)औज़ारों से auzāroṃ se
💡
English “with” asks two different Hindi questions: a tool or means takes se; a companion takes ke sāth.

Body parts as instruments

Hands, eyes, and other body parts can be construed as means of action. Their number and oblique morphology remain ordinary.

बच्चे ने दोनों हाथों से गिलास पकड़ लिया।

bacce ne donoṃ hāthoṃ se gilās pakaṛ liyā.

The child held the glass with both hands.

कपड़े की बनावट आँखों से नहीं, उँगलियों से जाँचनी होगी।

kapṛe kī banāvaṭ ā̃khoṃ se nahīṃ, ũgliyoṃ se jā̃cnī hogī.

The fabric's texture will have to be checked with the fingers, not the eyes.

Plural हाथ becomes हाथों and उँगलियाँ becomes उँगलियों. The noun ending marks oblique plural; से supplies the instrumental relationship.

The adverbial expression ध्यान से dhyān se means “carefully.” It is lexicalized from “with attention” and illustrates how instrumental noun phrases develop manner meanings.

Transport and routes

Vehicles take से when they are the means of travel: बस से, ट्रेन से, साइकिल से, गाड़ी से.

हम ट्रेन से लखनऊ जाएँगे।

ham ṭren se lakhnaū jāẽge.

We'll go to Lucknow by train.

इस रास्ते से स्टेशन जल्दी पहुँच जाओगे।

is rāste se sṭeśan jaldī pahũc jāoge.

You'll reach the station quickly by this route. (informal)

The route use bridges source and means: the path is the channel through which movement proceeds. में would locate someone inside a vehicle—बस में बैठा हूँ “I am sitting in the bus”—while बस से जा रहा हूँ identifies transport means.

Communication channels and methods

Messages and actions can proceed through a channel or method.

दस्तावेज़ ईमेल से भेज दीजिए।

dastāvez īmel se bhej dījie.

Please send the document by email.

यह समस्या बातचीत से हल हो सकती है।

yah samasyā bātcīt se hal ho saktī hai.

This problem can be solved through discussion.

Here से is compositional: email is the channel, discussion the method. Productive method phrases include मेहनत से mehnat se “through hard work,” अभ्यास से abhyās se “through practice,” and शांति से śānti se “peacefully/calmly.”

Pronoun and demonstrative forms

When the “instrument” is a demonstrative, use इससे isse “with/by this” and उससे usse “with/by that.” Plurals are इनसे/उनसे. Personal मुझसे, तुमसे, आपसे more often denote a source, comparison base, interlocutor, or intermediary, depending on the verb.

यह चाकू तेज़ है; इससे काटकर देखो।

yah cākū tez hai; isse kāṭkar dekho.

This knife is sharp; try cutting with it. (informal)

मैंने उससे यह पत्र लिखवाया।

maĩne usse yah patr likhvāyā.

I had him write this letter.

In the second sentence, उससे marks the causee/intermediary selected by a causative construction, not an inanimate tool. The form is the same, but the verb's argument structure determines the role.

Instrument versus accompaniment

Compare राम से गया and राम के साथ गया. The second clearly means “went with Ram.” Bare राम से गया does not normally express companionship; depending on context, it could be incomplete or relate Ram as source/comparison.

मैं रीना के साथ बाज़ार गया और वहाँ से बस से लौटा।

maĩ rīnā ke sāth bāzār gayā aur vahā̃ se bas se lauṭā.

I went to the market with Reena and returned from there by bus.

के साथ marks the companion, the first से marks source, and the second से marks means. English uses with, from, and by; Hindi reuses से for the latter two.

💡
Role comes from the noun plus predicate, not from se alone. A place favors source, a tool favors instrument, a vehicle favors means, and a human with a causative verb may be the causee.

Cause and manner: lexical extensions

Some से phrases express cause or manner: ठंड से काँपना ṭhaṇḍ se kā̃pnā “tremble from cold,” ख़ुशी से हँसना xuśī se hãsnā “laugh with joy,” जल्दी से jaldī se “quickly.” These are not freely predictable from every English because of or adverb.

वह ठंड से काँप रहा था।

vah ṭhaṇḍ se kā̃p rahā thā.

He was trembling from the cold.

Learn frequent combinations with their predicates. Formal agent marking with के द्वारा ke dvārā belongs to a separate contrast; instrumental से can mark agents in some passive contexts, but register and ambiguity matter.

A natural exchange

यह ढक्कन कैसे खुलेगा? — चम्मच से कोशिश करो; हाथ से नहीं खुल रहा।

yah ḍhakkan kaise khulegā? — cammac se kośiś karo; hāth se nahīṃ khul rahā.

How will this lid open? — Try with a spoon; it won't open by hand. (informal)

Both phrases identify an attempted means.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting से before the tool

❌ से चाकू रोटी काटो।

Incorrect: से follows its oblique complement.

✅ चाकू से रोटी काटो।

cākū se roṭī kāṭo.

Cut the flatbread with a knife. (informal)

2. Keeping a masculine -ā noun direct

❌ हथौड़ा से कील ठोको।

Incorrect: हथौड़ा becomes oblique हथौड़े before से.

✅ हथौड़े से कील ठोको।

hathauṛe se kīl ṭhoko.

Hammer the nail in. (informal)

3. Using a direct plural before से

❌ उसने दो उँगलियाँ से इशारा किया।

Incorrect: उँगलियाँ becomes oblique plural उँगलियों.

✅ उसने दो उँगलियों से इशारा किया।

usne do ũgliyoṃ se iśārā kiyā.

She gestured with two fingers.

4. Using instrumental से for a companion

❌ मैं रीना से फ़िल्म देखने गया।

Incorrect for accompaniment: use रीना के साथ.

✅ मैं रीना के साथ फ़िल्म देखने गया।

maĩ rīnā ke sāth film dekhne gayā.

I went to see a film with Reena.
