The compound postposition के साथ ke sāth places one participant in the company of another: दोस्तों के साथ dostoṃ ke sāth “with friends,” मेरे साथ mere sāth “with me.” Its core meaning is accompaniment, but it also expresses association, things consumed or used together, and change occurring over time.
English with has many other jobs—instrument, manner, possession, and lexical verb complements. Hindi uses के साथ only when an accompaniment or association is genuinely present.
The accompaniment frame
The complement comes first and stands in the oblique case; के साथ follows it as a fixed unit.
मैं शनिवार को अपने भाई के साथ बाज़ार गया।
maĩ śanivār ko apne bhāī ke sāth bāzār gayā.
I went to the market with my brother on Saturday. (male speaker)
रीना अपनी सहेलियों के साथ फ़िल्म देखने गई है।
rīnā apnī saheliyoṃ ke sāth film dekhne gaī hai.
Reena has gone to see a film with her friends.
The companion is not a second grammatical subject. In the first sentence, singular मैं controls गया; in the second, feminine singular रीना controls गई. The accompanying people do not force plural verb agreement.
Nouns are oblique before के साथ
| Direct form | Accompaniment phrase |
|---|---|
| लड़का laṛkā | लड़के के साथ laṛke ke sāth |
| बच्चे bacce | बच्चों के साथ baccoṃ ke sāth |
| लड़की laṛkī | लड़की के साथ laṛkī ke sāth |
| महिलाएँ mahilāẽ | महिलाओं के साथ mahilāoṃ ke sāth |
नए लड़के के साथ कोई बैठा है क्या?
nae laṛke ke sāth koī baiṭhā hai kyā?
Is anyone sitting with the new boy?
Direct नया लड़का becomes oblique नए लड़के. With a plural, case is always overt:
हमने स्थानीय कलाकारों के साथ दो दिन काम किया।
hamne sthānīya kalākāroṃ ke sāth do din kām kiyā.
We worked with local artists for two days.
The fixed linker is के, regardless of the complement's gender. Say रीना के साथ, not रीना की साथ. The general morphology is covered on the oblique in compound postpositional phrases.
Pronouns use possessive-shaped forms
Personal pronouns do not appear as bare citation forms before साथ. Use मेरे साथ, हमारे साथ, तेरे साथ (intimate), तुम्हारे साथ (informal), and आपके साथ (respectful). Demonstrative pronouns form इसके/उसके साथ and इनके/उनके साथ.
क्या आप हमारे साथ खाना खाएँगे?
kyā āp hamāre sāth khānā khāẽge?
Will you eat with us? (respectful)
मैं उसके साथ पहले भी काम कर चुका हूँ।
maĩ uske sāth pahle bhī kām kar cukā hū̃.
I've worked with him before. (male speaker)
These are conventional linked forms, not ordinary free agreement with an overt noun after them. मैं के साथ and मुझ के साथ are not neutral Standard Hindi.
Accompaniment versus coordination
Coordination with और aur presents two participants symmetrically. के साथ creates an asymmetric frame: one participant is the subject or topic, and the other accompanies that participant.
रीना और मोहन साथ आए।
rīnā aur mohan sāth āe.
Reena and Mohan came together.
मोहन रीना के साथ आया।
mohan rīnā ke sāth āyā.
Mohan came with Reena.
The coordinated subject is plural and takes आए. In the second sentence, masculine singular मोहन is the subject and takes आया; रीना के साथ is an accompanying phrase.
Things that occur or are used together
The companion need not be a person. के साथ can connect food, objects, or circumstances that form one practical combination.
चाय के साथ कुछ नमकीन भी ले आइए।
cāy ke sāth kuch namkīn bhī le āie.
Please bring something savory with the tea too.
इस मशीन के साथ अलग चार्जर मिलता है।
is maśīn ke sāth alag cārjar miltā hai.
A separate charger comes with this machine.
The second sentence expresses associated inclusion, close to English comes with. It does not assert legal possession. For possession and availability, Hindi uses का/के/की or के पास according to the intended meaning.
Parallel development and साथ-साथ
With time or a changing situation, के साथ can mean “as X progresses.” The relationship is abstract but still compositional: two developments proceed together.
समय के साथ उसकी हिंदी काफ़ी सुधर गई।
samay ke sāth uskī hindī kāfī sudhar gaī.
Over time, her Hindi improved considerably.
The emphatic extension के साथ-साथ ke sāth-sāth means “along with / as well as,” often adding a parallel participant or property.
नौकरी के साथ-साथ वह शाम को पढ़ाई भी करती है।
naukrī ke sāth-sāth vah śām ko paṛhāī bhī kartī hai.
Alongside her job, she also studies in the evening.
Because साथ-साथ announces parallel addition, the additive particle भी is common in the other part of the sentence.
के साथ versus से
English with often marks an instrument: “cut with a knife.” Hindi uses instrumental से, not accompaniment के साथ.
उसने चाकू से डिब्बा खोला और मेरे साथ सामान बाँटा।
usne cākū se ḍibbā kholā aur mere sāth sāmān bā̃ṭā.
He opened the box with a knife and shared the contents with me.
चाकू से names the means; मेरे साथ names a co-participant. English uses with for both.
Some verbs also select से lexically. Neutral Hindi says किसी से मिलना “meet someone” and किसी से बात करना “speak with someone.” किसी के साथ मिलना instead suggests joining together with that person for some further action, or it sounds non-neutral without that context.
Productive meaning and lexical frames
Accompaniment is productive: almost any plausible person or entity can fill the frame. Other expressions involving साथ must be learned as complete predicates. किसी का साथ देना means “support/stand by someone,” with का, while किसी के साथ अच्छा व्यवहार करना means “treat someone well,” with के साथ.
मुश्किल समय में उसके दोस्तों ने उसका साथ दिया।
muśkil samay meṃ uske dostoṃ ne uskā sāth diyā.
His friends stood by him during a difficult time.
Do not replace उसका साथ देना with उसके साथ देना. The first contains an ordinary genitive relation to the noun साथ inside a fixed predicate; it is not the compound postposition के साथ.
A natural exchange
तुम किसके साथ जा रहे हो? — नेहा के साथ; वह गाड़ी चला रही है।
tum kiske sāth jā rahe ho? — nehā ke sāth; vah gāṛī calā rahī hai.
Who are you going with? — With Neha; she's driving. (informal)
Interrogative किसके साथ and the proper-name answer follow the same complement-first structure.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English preposition-first order
❌ मैं के साथ मोहन जा रहा हूँ।
Incorrect: के साथ follows its complement.
✅ मैं मोहन के साथ जा रहा हूँ।
maĩ mohan ke sāth jā rahā hū̃.
I'm going with Mohan. (male speaker)
2. Leaving a masculine -आ noun direct
❌ वह लड़का के साथ बैठी है।
Incorrect: लड़का becomes oblique लड़के before के साथ.
✅ वह लड़के के साथ बैठी है।
vah laṛke ke sāth baiṭhī hai.
She is sitting with the boy.
3. Using a citation-form pronoun
❌ क्या तुम मैं के साथ चलोगे?
Incorrect: use मेरे साथ.
✅ क्या तुम मेरे साथ चलोगे?
kyā tum mere sāth caloge?
Will you come with me? (informal)
4. Making the verb plural because a companion is present
❌ रीना अपने भाई के साथ गए।
Incorrect: singular feminine subject रीना controls the verb.
✅ रीना अपने भाई के साथ गई।
rīnā apne bhāī ke sāth gaī.
Reena went with her brother.
5. Using accompaniment for an instrument
❌ उसने चाकू के साथ रस्सी काटी।
Incorrect for the instrument meaning: use चाकू से.
✅ उसने चाकू से रस्सी काटी।
usne cākū se rassī kāṭī.
He cut the rope with a knife.
