The compound postposition के लिए ke lie presents someone as an intended beneficiary or something as a purpose: बच्चों के लिए खाना baccoṃ ke lie khānā “food for the children,” काम के लिए औज़ार kām ke lie auzār “tools for work.” It can also frame suitability, point of view, and a temporary period.
English for covers many unrelated relationships. Hindi does not translate it mechanically: an intended beneficiary takes के लिए, an actual recipient commonly takes को, a possessor may take का, and a scheduled day takes temporal को. The relationship determines the form.
Intended beneficiaries
के लिए identifies the person or group for whose benefit something is made, obtained, reserved, or done.
मैंने बच्चों के लिए नाश्ता तैयार किया है।
maĩne baccoṃ ke lie nāśtā taiyār kiyā hai.
I have prepared breakfast for the children.
यह सीट बुज़ुर्ग यात्रियों के लिए आरक्षित है।
yah sīṭ buzurg yātriyoṃ ke lie ārakṣit hai.
This seat is reserved for elderly passengers.
हमने आपके लिए बाहर छाता रख दिया है।
hamne āpke lie bāhar chātā rakh diyā hai.
We've left an umbrella outside for you. (respectful)
The benefit or intended destination is enough; the beneficiary need not already possess or receive the thing. This is why के लिए differs from recipient को.
Beneficiary versus recipient
Compare buying something with handing it over:
मैंने रीना के लिए किताब ख़रीदी।
maĩne rīnā ke lie kitāb xarīdī.
I bought a book for Reena.
मैंने रीना को किताब दे दी।
maĩne rīnā ko kitāb de dī.
I gave Reena the book.
The first sentence states the intended beneficiary; Reena may not have received the book yet. The second marks her as the actual recipient of a transfer. A natural sequence can contain both: मैंने रीना के लिए किताब ख़रीदी और शाम को उसे दे दी “I bought a book for Reena and gave it to her in the evening.” See को as recipient and goal marker for the transfer pattern.
Nouns before the compound postposition
The complement of के लिए is oblique. A masculine singular noun ending in -आ changes to -ए, and all changing plurals take their oblique plural form.
| Direct form | Before के लिए |
|---|---|
| लड़का laṛkā | लड़के के लिए laṛke ke lie |
| बच्चे bacce | बच्चों के लिए baccoṃ ke lie |
| लड़की laṛkī | लड़की के लिए laṛkī ke lie |
| महिलाएँ mahilāẽ | महिलाओं के लिए mahilāoṃ ke lie |
इस कमरे में छोटे बच्चे के लिए अलग बिस्तर है।
is kamre meṃ choṭe bacce ke lie alag bistar hai.
There is a separate bed in this room for the small child.
The internal के is fixed as part of the compound postposition. It does not agree with the beneficiary: standard Hindi has लड़की के लिए, not लड़की की लिए. Historically transparent pieces often become grammatically fixed constructions.
Pronouns use possessive-like forms
Personal pronouns combine with लिए through forms that look like masculine oblique possessives: मेरे लिए, हमारे लिए, तेरे लिए (intimate), तुम्हारे लिए, आपके लिए, इसके/उसके लिए, इनके/उनके लिए.
यह फ़ैसला मेरे लिए आसान नहीं था।
yah faislā mere lie āsān nahīṃ thā.
This decision was not easy for me.
क्या मैं तुम्हारे लिए चाय बना दूँ?
kyā maĩ tumhāre lie cāy banā dū̃?
Shall I make tea for you? (informal)
Do not say मैं के लिए or मुझ के लिए in neutral standard Hindi. मेरे लिए is conventional even though no possessed masculine noun follows. Regional colloquial alternatives occur, but the forms above are the unmarked standard.
Purpose with nouns and infinitives
A noun can name the intended function of an object or action: पढ़ाई के लिए “for study,” यात्रा के लिए “for the journey.” An infinitive before के लिए takes the oblique form ending in -ने: करना → करने के लिए, सीखना → सीखने के लिए.
मैं हिंदी सीखने के लिए दिल्ली आया हूँ।
maĩ hindī sīkhne ke lie dillī āyā hū̃.
I have come to Delhi to learn Hindi. (male speaker)
फ़ॉर्म भरने के लिए पहचान पत्र चाहिए।
form bharne ke lie pahcān patr cāhie.
An identity document is needed to fill out the form.
यह चाकू फल काटने के लिए है, डिब्बा खोलने के लिए नहीं।
yah cākū phal kāṭne ke lie hai, ḍibbā kholne ke lie nahīṃ.
This knife is for cutting fruit, not for opening boxes.
The infinitive does not agree with a following noun here. -ने is its oblique form licensed by the postposition, not the perfective ergative marker ने attached to an agent.
Purpose usually concerns an intended action, not a cause that has already produced a result. बारिश के कारण मैच रुका means “the match stopped because of rain”; बारिश के लिए मैच रुका would incorrectly suggest that stopping the match served rain as a purpose or beneficiary.
Suitability and point of view
The same construction can set the person or context relative to which an evaluation holds. English often translates this use as for.
यह रास्ता बच्चों के लिए सुरक्षित नहीं है।
yah rāstā baccoṃ ke lie surakṣit nahīṃ hai.
This route is not safe for children.
मेरे लिए परिवार काम से ज़्यादा महत्वपूर्ण है।
mere lie parivār kām se zyādā mahatvapūrṇ hai.
For me, family is more important than work.
The first phrase names the group whose safety is evaluated; the second frames the speaker's viewpoint. Neither is an actual transfer. These extensions remain compositional because “relative to the needs or perspective of X” follows naturally from beneficiary meaning.
Temporary duration and intended allocation
के लिए can bound a temporary arrangement or intended period, especially with a quantified time expression.
मैं दो दिनों के लिए जयपुर जा रहा हूँ।
maĩ do dinoṃ ke lie jaypur jā rahā hū̃.
I'm going to Jaipur for two days. (male speaker)
उन्होंने कमरा एक महीने के लिए किराए पर लिया।
unhoṃne kamrā ek mahīne ke lie kirāe par liyā.
They rented the room for one month.
This presents the interval as the intended span of the trip or arrangement. By contrast, दो घंटे तक इंतज़ार किया means “waited for/up to two hours” and focuses the endpoint or measured extent. The distinction is not always mirrored cleanly by English for.
Productive meanings versus lexical government
Beneficiary and purpose uses are highly productive, but English for also appears with verbs whose Hindi complement is lexically different. “Wait for the bus” is बस का इंतज़ार करना, not बस के लिए इंतज़ार करना in the neutral expression. “Ask for help” is normally मदद माँगना. “Leave for Delhi” can be दिल्ली के लिए निकलना, where the phrase names an intended destination selected by the movement construction.
हम सुबह छह बजे मुंबई के लिए निकलेंगे।
ham subah chah baje mumbaī ke lie nikleṅge.
We'll leave for Mumbai at six in the morning.
Learn lexical complements with their predicates. Do not assume that every dictionary gloss containing English for licenses के लिए.
A natural exchange
ये फूल किसके लिए हैं? — दादी के लिए; आज उनका जन्मदिन है।
ye phūl kiske lie haiṃ? — dādī ke lie; āj unkā janmdin hai.
Who are these flowers for? — For Grandma; it's her birthday today.
किसके लिए asks for the intended beneficiary; the answer repeats only the beneficiary phrase because the rest is understood.
Common Mistakes
1. Using a direct masculine -आ noun
❌ यह खिलौना उस बच्चा के लिए है।
Incorrect: बच्चा becomes oblique बच्चे before the compound postposition.
✅ यह खिलौना उस बच्चे के लिए है।
yah khilaunā us bacce ke lie hai.
This toy is for that child.
2. Making के agree with a feminine beneficiary
❌ मैंने रीना की लिए टिकट ख़रीदा।
Incorrect: के लिए is fixed; its के does not agree with रीना.
✅ मैंने रीना के लिए टिकट ख़रीदा।
maĩne rīnā ke lie ṭikaṭ xarīdā.
I bought a ticket for Reena.
3. Using a citation-form pronoun
❌ यह संदेश मैं के लिए है।
Incorrect: use the conventional pronoun form मेरे लिए.
✅ यह संदेश मेरे लिए है।
yah sandeś mere lie hai.
This message is for me.
4. Confusing intended beneficiary with actual recipient
❌ मैंने रीना के लिए चाबी दे दी।
Incorrect for an actual recipient: देना marks the receiver with को.
✅ मैंने रीना को चाबी दे दी।
maĩne rīnā ko cābī de dī.
I gave Reena the key.
5. Translating lexical English “for” literally
❌ हम बस के लिए इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।
Non-neutral calque for “wait for the bus”: इंतज़ार conventionally takes a का phrase.
✅ हम बस का इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।
ham bas kā intazār kar rahe haiṃ.
We are waiting for the bus.
