Hindi orders two events with either a non-finite event phrase or a finite subordinate clause. घर से निकलने से पहले दरवाज़ा बंद कर देना means “Close the door before leaving home”; इससे पहले कि बारिश शुरू हो, घर पहुँच जाओ means “Get home before the rain starts.” After-relations use के बाद, जब … उसके बाद, or a converb when one subject performs a tightly connected sequence.
The choice is structural. A non-finite phrase does not carry its own tense and normally gets its subject from context; a finite clause can name a different subject and mark its own tense or mood.
Non-finite event phrases
Add से पहले to an oblique infinitive for “before doing” and के बाद for “after doing.”
सोने से पहले खिड़की बंद कर देना।
sone se pahle khiṛkī band kar denā.
Close the window before going to sleep.
बैठक खत्म होने के बाद हम चाय पीने गए।
baiṭhak xatm hone ke bād ham cāy pīne gae.
After the meeting ended, we went to have tea.
रिपोर्ट भेजने से पहले आँकड़े दोबारा जाँच लें।
riporṭ bhejne se pahle ā̃kaṛe dobārā jā̃c leṃ.
Check the figures again before sending the report.
The infinitive is oblique—सोने, होने, भेजने—because it precedes a postposition. The phrase itself has no present, past, or future. The main predicate and context supply the time.
For the postpositional core of these forms, compare से पहले precedence and के बाद sequence.
Subject reference in non-finite phrases
With no overt subject, the understood doer is normally the main-clause subject:
जूते पहनने के बाद आरव बाहर गया।
jūte pahanne ke bād ārav bāhar gayā.
After putting on his shoes, Aarav went outside.
Aarav both put on the shoes and went outside. When the subordinate event has a different subject, name it inside a genitive event phrase or use a finite clause:
मेहमानों के आने से पहले हमने कमरा साफ़ कर लिया।
mehmānoṃ ke āne se pahle hamne kamrā sāf kar liyā.
Before the guests arrived, we cleaned the room.
मेहमानों के आने literally nominalizes “the guests’ coming.” This makes the different subject explicit without building a finite clause.
Finite “before” clauses
Use इससे पहले कि + finite clause when the later event needs its own subject, mood, or fuller proposition:
इससे पहले कि दुकान बंद हो, दवा ले आओ।
isse pahle ki dukān band ho, davā le āo.
Get the medicine before the shop closes.
इससे पहले कि कोई गलतफ़हमी हो, मैं पूरी बात समझा देता हूँ।
isse pahle ki koī galatfahmī ho, maĩ pūrī bāt samjhā detā hū̃.
Before there is any misunderstanding, let me explain the whole matter. (male speaker)
The anticipated event is not asserted as a fact, so a subjunctive such as हो is common. Past narrative can use a finite past clause when the event is located as real:
इससे पहले कि पुलिस वहाँ पहुँच पाती, चोर भाग चुके थे।
isse pahle ki pulis vahā̃ pahũc pātī, cor bhāg cuke the.
Before the police could get there, the thieves had already fled.
Here पहुँच पाती presents police arrival as the later boundary that was not achieved in time. For a plain factual past sequence, the non-finite पुलिस के वहाँ पहुँचने से पहले is normally smoother. Hindi chooses the construction by viewpoint rather than copying an English tense formula.
Finite “after” clauses
For a full finite event, Hindi often uses जब … उसके बाद … or states the first event and follows it with उसके बाद:
जब मेहमान चले गए, उसके बाद हमने रसोई साफ़ की।
jab mehmān cale gae, uske bād hamne rasoī sāf kī.
After the guests left, we cleaned the kitchen.
पहले निदेशक ने प्रस्ताव पढ़ा; उसके बाद समिति ने मतदान किया।
pahle nirdeśak ne prastāv paṛhā; uske bād samiti ne matdān kiyā.
First the director read the proposal; after that, the committee voted.
The paired temporal relation is overt in जब … उसके बाद. In the second example, punctuation and उसके बाद connect two independent sentences. A comma by itself would not mark the relation.
Simple and expanded versions
खाने के बाद टहलना।
khāne ke bād ṭahalnā.
Take a walk after eating. (concise instruction)
रात का खाना खत्म होने के बाद कम-से-कम दस मिनट धीरे-धीरे टहलना पाचन के लिए अच्छा हो सकता है।
rāt kā khānā xatm hone ke bād kam-se-kam das minaṭ dhīre-dhīre ṭahalnā pācan ke lie acchā ho saktā hai.
Walking slowly for at least ten minutes after dinner is over can be good for digestion.
The expanded के बाद phrase is still non-finite. The main subject is the nominalized activity टहलना, and हो सकता है supplies modality.
Converb versus explicit “after”
A converb in -कर normally presents a completed step by the same subject:
ताला जाँचकर चौकीदार बाहर निकला।
tālā jā̃ckar caukīdār bāhar niklā.
After checking the lock, the guard went outside.
ताला जाँचने के बाद चौकीदार बाहर निकला states essentially the same sequence more explicitly. The converb is tighter and often implies that the first action directly prepares for the second. If the two events have different subjects, prefer a genitive event phrase or finite clause rather than letting the converb acquire the wrong subject.
Tense and completion across the boundary
English often uses a past perfect after before or after. Hindi marks anterior completion only when the discourse needs it:
मेरे स्टेशन पहुँचने से पहले ट्रेन निकल गई थी।
mere sṭeśan pahũcne se pahle ṭren nikal gaī thī.
The train had left before I reached the station.
मेरे स्टेशन पहुँचने से पहले ट्रेन निकल चुकी थी।
mere sṭeśan pahũcne se pahle ṭren nikal cukī thī.
The train had already left before I reached the station. (completion emphasized)
Both orders are established by से पहले. चुकी थी adds a resultant-completion viewpoint; it is not compulsory merely because English has had left.
A spoken dialogue
तुम दफ़्तर से निकलने के बाद मुझे फ़ोन करोगे? — हाँ, लेकिन बस में चढ़ने से पहले करूँगा।
tum daftar se nikalne ke bād mujhe fon karoge? — hā̃, lekin bas meṃ caṛhne se pahle karū̃gā.
Will you call me after leaving the office? — Yes, but I’ll call before getting on the bus. (male speaker)
The time phrases share the understood subject तुम / मैं with their respective main clauses. Their non-finite forms do not themselves express future time.
Formal written example and clause boundary
इससे पहले कि नया नियम लागू हो, विभाग सभी कर्मचारियों को संशोधित निर्देश भेजेगा।
isse pahle ki nayā niyam lāgū ho, vibhāg sabhī karmacāriyoṃ ko saṃśodhit nirdeś bhejegā.
Before the new rule takes effect, the department will send revised instructions to all employees. (formal)
Clause boundary: [इससे पहले कि नया नियम लागू हो] [विभाग सभी कर्मचारियों को संशोधित निर्देश भेजेगा]. कि closes the complex subordinator इससे पहले कि; the comma makes the initial subordinate boundary visible. The subordinate subjunctive हो is interpreted prospectively from the future main clause.
Common Mistakes
❌ घर से निकलना से पहले बत्ती बंद करो।
Incorrect — an infinitive before a postposition must take the oblique -ने form.
✅ घर से निकलने से पहले बत्ती बंद करो।
ghar se nikalne se pahle battī band karo.
Turn off the light before leaving home.
❌ पहले कि बारिश शुरू हो, कपड़े अंदर ले आओ।
Incorrect — the finite subordinator is इससे पहले कि, not bare पहले कि.
✅ इससे पहले कि बारिश शुरू हो, कपड़े अंदर ले आओ।
isse pahle ki bāriś śurū ho, kapṛe andar le āo.
Bring the clothes inside before it starts raining.
❌ मेहमान आकर हमने खाना परोसा।
Incorrect for different subjects — the converb would make ‘we’ the understood guests who arrived.
✅ मेहमानों के आने के बाद हमने खाना परोसा।
mehmānoṃ ke āne ke bād hamne khānā parosā.
After the guests arrived, we served the food.
❌ मेरे पहुँचने के बाद ट्रेन पहले निकल गई।
Wrong for the intended sequence that the train left before my arrival.
✅ मेरे पहुँचने से पहले ट्रेन निकल चुकी थी।
mere pahũcne se pahle ṭren nikal cukī thī.
The train had left before I arrived.
Key Takeaways
Use oblique infinitive -ने से पहले / -ने के बाद to package an event non-finitely. Use इससे पहले कि or जब … उसके बाद when a full clause and separate subject are useful. Hindi temporal markers establish order directly; past-perfect morphology adds viewpoint and completion, not a mechanical translation of English tense.
