Until clauses with जब तक

जब तक introduces the time limit through which a situation continues: जब तक तुम लौट नहीं आते, तब तक मैं यहीं रहूँगा “I will stay here until you return.” The matching phrase तब तक identifies the continuation in the main clause. In many “until X happens” sentences, Hindi uses negative न / नहीं inside the endpoint clause: जब तक काम पूरा न हो जाए, मत जाना “Do not leave until the work is complete.”

That negative form is one of the largest differences from English. It does not negate the eventual completion; it marks the period before completion as the boundary of the main situation.

The full correlative frame

The clearest structure is जब तक + endpoint clause, तब तक + continuing clause.

जब तक दुकान खुली है, तब तक हम सामान बदल सकते हैं।

jab tak dukān khulī hai, tab tak ham sāmān badal sakte haiṃ.

As long as the shop is open, we can exchange the item.

जब तक बच्चे सो रहे थे, तब तक घर बिल्कुल शांत था।

jab tak bacce so rahe the, tab tak ghar bilkul śānt thā.

The house was completely quiet while the children were asleep.

Here जब तक means “for as long as.” Both situations hold over the same interval. The paired तब तक is especially helpful when the clauses are long or the time relation could be missed.

For the broader correlative system, see temporal जब … तब clauses.

💡
Think of जब तक as drawing a time span and तब तक as locating the main situation inside that span. The English translation may be “until,” “as long as,” or “while.”

The negative endpoint pattern

When the main clause continues up to the occurrence of a new event, the endpoint clause commonly contains नहीं or subjunctive न:

जब तक बारिश नहीं रुकती, हम बाहर नहीं जाएँगे।

jab tak bāriś nahīṃ ruktī, ham bāhar nahīṃ jāeṃge.

We won’t go outside until the rain stops.

जब तक डॉक्टर न आएँ, मरीज को पानी मत देना।

jab tak ḍokṭar na āeṃ, marīz ko pānī mat denā.

Do not give the patient water until the doctor comes. (honorific)

जब तक भुगतान पूरा न हो जाए, रसीद जारी नहीं की जाएगी।

jab tak bhugtān pūrā na ho jāe, rasīd jārī nahīṃ kī jāegī.

The receipt will not be issued until payment is complete. (formal)

In these clauses, न / नहीं is licensed by the “not yet” endpoint logic. English states the endpoint positively—“until the rain stops”—but Hindi often says, structurally, “while the rain has not stopped.”

तब तक may be omitted

When the relation is obvious, the main-clause correlate can be absent:

जब तक मैं वापस न आऊँ, यहीं इंतज़ार करना।

jab tak maĩ vāpas na āū̃, yahīṃ intazār karnā.

Wait right here until I return.

मैं यहीं बैठूँगा जब तक तुम्हारी बैठक खत्म नहीं हो जाती।

maĩ yahīṃ baiṭhū̃gā jab tak tumhārī baiṭhak xatm nahīṃ ho jātī.

I’ll sit right here until your meeting ends.

Hindi permits the जब तक clause before or after the main clause. Initial position foregrounds the boundary; final position often adds it as the condition on an already announced plan. A comma is useful after a long initial clause but unnecessary before a short final one.

Simple and expanded versions

जब तक बुलाएँ नहीं, अंदर मत जाना।

jab tak bulāeṃ nahīṃ, andar mat jānā.

Don’t go inside until they call you.

जब तक स्वागत-कक्ष से आपका नाम पुकारा न जाए, कृपया इस गलियारे में बैठकर अपनी बारी का इंतज़ार करें।

jab tak svāgat-kakṣ se āpkā nām pukārā na jāe, kripyā is galiyāre meṃ baiṭhkar apnī bārī kā intazār kareṃ.

Until your name is called from reception, please sit in this corridor and wait for your turn.

The expanded endpoint is passive and has its own subject आपका नाम. The main polite imperative supplies the instruction. The two clauses need not share a subject.

Non-finite alternative with -ने तक

An oblique infinitive plus तक can package a compact endpoint:

काम पूरा होने तक कंप्यूटर बंद मत करना।

kām pūrā hone tak kampyūṭar band mat karnā.

Do not turn off the computer until the work is complete.

सूरज निकलने तक तापमान काफ़ी गिर चुका था।

sūraj nikalne tak tāpmān kāfī gir cukā thā.

By the time the sun rose, the temperature had fallen considerably.

The non-finite phrase has no independent tense. गिर चुका था supplies anterior completion in the second example, and context determines whether तक is best translated as “until” or “by the time.” A finite जब तक clause is preferable when polarity, mood, or an explicit proposition needs emphasis.

Future time without mechanical future matching

Hindi does not require both clauses to use the same tense:

जब तक तुम्हें जवाब मिलेगा, तब तक हम दूसरी योजना तैयार कर लेंगे।

jab tak tumheṃ javāb milegā, tab tak ham dūsrī yojnā taiyār kar leṃge.

By the time you receive an answer, we will have prepared another plan.

जब तक तुम्हें जवाब न मिले, कोई अंतिम निर्णय मत लेना।

jab tak tumheṃ javāb na mile, koī antim nirṇay mat lenā.

Do not make a final decision until you receive an answer.

The first predicts two future developments. The second treats receiving an answer as a not-yet-realized boundary and uses subjunctive मिले. Mood follows the clause’s function, not an English rule that every event after until must be present tense.

Negation scope

Compare “stay until” with “do not leave until”:

तब तक यहीं रहो जब तक बस आ नहीं जाती।

tab tak yahīṃ raho jab tak bas ā nahīṃ jātī.

Stay here until the bus arrives.

जब तक बस न आए, यहाँ से मत जाना।

jab tak bas na āe, yahā̃ se mat jānā.

Do not leave here until the bus arrives.

The main clauses differ in polarity, but both share the same endpoint. Do not move नहीं mechanically to the end of the English translation; interpret it inside the Hindi “not yet” interval.

A spoken dialogue

तुम कब तक दफ़्तर में रहोगे? — जब तक यह फ़ाइल पूरी नहीं हो जाती, तब तक यहीं रहूँगा।

tum kab tak daftar meṃ rahoge? — jab tak yah fāil pūrī nahīṃ ho jātī, tab tak yahīṃ rahū̃gā.

How long will you stay at the office? — I’ll stay here until this file is finished. (male speaker)

Question कब तक asks for the endpoint. The answer supplies it as a full जब तक clause and resumes the duration with तब तक.

Formal written example and clause boundary

जब तक सभी आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ प्राप्त न हो जाएँ, तब तक आवेदन पर अंतिम निर्णय नहीं लिया जाएगा।

jab tak sabhī āvaśyak dastāvez prāpt na ho jāeṃ, tab tak āvedan par antim nirṇay nahīṃ liyā jāegā.

No final decision will be made on the application until all required documents have been received. (formal)

Clause boundary: [जब तक सभी आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ प्राप्त न हो जाएँ] [तब तक आवेदन पर अंतिम निर्णय नहीं लिया जाएगा]. The paired markers overtly connect the subordinate endpoint with the main duration. Plural दस्तावेज़ triggers जाएँ inside the first clause.

💡
Use the full जब तक … तब तक pair in formal or complex sentences. Omit तब तक only when the endpoint relation stays immediately recoverable.

Common Mistakes

❌ जब तक बारिश रुकेगी, हम बाहर नहीं जाएँगे।

Unnatural for the intended ‘not until’ boundary — neutral Hindi normally marks the rain as not yet stopped.

✅ जब तक बारिश नहीं रुकती, हम घर से नहीं निकलेंगे।

jab tak bāriś nahīṃ ruktī, ham ghar se nahīṃ nikleṃge.

We won’t leave home until the rain stops.

❌ काम पूरा होना तक मशीन बंद मत करना।

Incorrect — होना must take oblique होने before तक.

✅ काम पूरा होने तक मशीन बंद मत करना।

kām pūrā hone tak maśīn band mat karnā.

Do not turn off the machine until the work is complete.

❌ जब तक डॉक्टर आएँ, मरीज को दवा मत देना।

Wrong for the intended ‘not until the doctor comes’ instruction — the endpoint needs न.

✅ जब तक डॉक्टर न आएँ, मरीज को दवा मत देना।

jab tak ḍokṭar na āeṃ, marīz ko davā mat denā.

Do not give the patient medicine until the doctor comes. (honorific)

❌ जब तक तुम लौटो, तब मैं इंतज़ार करूँगा।

Incorrect correlative for duration — use तब तक, not bare तब.

✅ जब तक तुम लौट नहीं आते, तब तक मैं बाहर इंतज़ार करूँगा।

jab tak tum lauṭ nahīṃ āte, tab tak maĩ bāhar intazār karū̃gā.

I’ll wait outside until you return. (male speaker)

Key Takeaways

जब तक … तब तक maps an endpoint clause to a continuing main situation. Hindi frequently negates a not-yet-realized endpoint even where English uses positive until. Compact -ने तक phrases lack independent tense, while a finite जब तक clause can display its own subject, polarity, and mood.
