करते-करते gradual or repeated process

Hindi reduplicates the -ते form to profile an activity across time: चलते-चलते थक जाना “get tired from walking,” पूछते-पूछते पता लगा लेना “find out by asking repeatedly,” घर पहुँचते-पहुँचते रात हो जाना “have night fall by the time one reaches home.” The construction presents duration, repetition, or approach to a boundary and often lets a result emerge gradually.

The productive neutral adverbial is verb stem + ते-ते, normally invariant. It is not merely a longer synonym of -ते हुए: repetition foregrounds accumulation and development. It also does not entail that the activity was completed.

For simple overlap without this accumulative contour, see ते हुए simultaneous action.

Form: reduplicate the -ते form

InfinitiveReduplicated formTypical interpretation
करनाकरते-करतेthrough doing / as one keeps doing
चलनाचलते-चलतेafter walking for a while
पूछनापूछते-पूछतेby asking repeatedly
पहुँचनापहुँचते-पहुँचतेby the time one reaches
होनाहोते-होतेas something gradually becomes / by the time it happens

Use a hyphen in careful modern writing to make the reduplication easy to see. The whole form is non-finite; the following predicate carries person, TAM, and agreement.

मैं रिपोर्ट पढ़ते-पढ़ते थक गया।

maĩ riporṭ paṛhte-paṛhte thak gayā.

I got tired from reading the report for so long. (male speaker)

रीना फ़ोन पर बात करते-करते अचानक चुप हो गई।

rīnā fon par bāt karte-karte acānak cup ho gaī.

Rina suddenly fell silent while talking on the phone.

Masculine मैं and feminine रीना both take neutral adverbial -ते-ते. Gender appears on गया/गई, not on the reduplicated process frame.

💡
The repetition is grammatical, not decorative. A single करते हुए locates an overlapping scene; करते-करते asks the listener to track the activity across a stretch of time or repeated cycles.

Sustained activity leading to a result

The most familiar use presents a durative activity whose accumulation produces fatigue, boredom, skill, or another change.

इतनी देर कतार में खड़े-खड़े हमारे पैर दुखने लगे।

itnī der katār meṃ khaṛe-khaṛe hamāre pair dukhne lage.

After we had stood in line for so long, our legs began to ache.

कविता को बार-बार सुधारते-सुधारते लेखक ने उसका लहजा बिल्कुल बदल दिया।

kavitā ko bār-bār sudhārte-sudhārte lekhak ne uskā lahjā bilkul badal diyā.

By revising the poem again and again, the writer completely changed its tone.

The accumulated process may change the performer (थक गया) or reshape its object (लहजा बदल दिया). In both cases, the person who sustains the process remains recoverable.

The causal inference is strong in many examples but not encoded as a separate causal conjunction. Context tells us that prolonged standing caused the pain; in another sentence the reduplicated activity may simply supply the background during which a discovery occurs.

Repetition as a path to discovery or skill

पुराने काग़ज़ छाँटते-छाँटते हमें खोई हुई रसीद मिल गई।

purāne kāġaz chā̃ṭte-chā̃ṭte hameṃ khoī huī rasīd mil gaī.

While sorting through the old papers, we eventually found the lost receipt.

रोज़ हिंदी समाचार सुनते-सुनते आरव तेज़ बोली समझने लगा।

roz hindī samācār sunte-sunte ārav tez bolī samajhne lagā.

By listening to Hindi news every day, Aarav began to understand rapid speech.

Sorting involves repeated local actions and eventually yields a discovery. Repeated listening gradually changes Aarav's ability. English often needs eventually, over time, or by repeatedly to express what Hindi packages through reduplication.

💡
If the matrix describes a newly reached state—थक गया, सीख गया, समझने लगा, पता चल गया—-ते-ते often presents the accumulated path toward that state.

Approaching an endpoint: “by the time”

With a telic verb, reduplication can profile progress toward its endpoint rather than literal repeated completion:

घर पहुँचते-पहुँचते मैं पूरी तरह भीग गया था।

ghar pahũcte-pahũcte maĩ pūrī tarah bhīg gayā thā.

By the time I reached home, I was completely soaked. (male speaker)

अस्पताल पहुँचते-पहुँचते मरीज़ की हालत कुछ सँभल गई।

aspatāl pahũcte-pahũcte marīz kī hālat kuch sãbhal gaī.

By the time they reached the hospital, the patient's condition had improved somewhat.

Nobody repeatedly arrives home or at the hospital. The doubled form stretches out the approach to the boundary and locates the matrix change along or by the end of that course.

Environmental results are conventional even without a shared surface subject:

गाँव लौटते-लौटते अँधेरा हो गया।

gā̃v lauṭte-lauṭte ãdherā ho gayā.

It grew dark by the time we returned to the village.

The returner is supplied by discourse; impersonal अँधेरा हो गया supplies the environmental outcome. This is not the same as freely assigning two human agents to one compressed chain.

Controller continuity and genuine subject changes

In an ordinary agentive sentence, the performer of the prolonged activity is normally the participant affected by or responsible for the matrix development:

सीमा अभ्यास करते-करते बिना देखे टाइप करने लगी।

sīmā abhyās karte-karte binā dekhe ṭāip karne lagī.

Through continued practice, Seema began to type without looking.

If two independent people perform the two events, use finite clauses:

जब बच्चे आँगन में खेल रहे थे, तब उनके माता-पिता सामान बाँध रहे थे।

jab bacce ā̃gan meṃ khel rahe the, tab unke mātā-pitā sāmān bā̃dh rahe the.

While the children were playing in the courtyard, their parents were packing.

बच्चे खेलते-खेलते माता-पिता... cannot neutrally mean that the children played while the parents packed; it leaves the first controller structurally unattached. Reduplication relaxes strict surface identity in result and environmental constructions, but it does not become a general replacement for जब ... तब.

Invariant process frame and agreeing reduplication

Productive process -ते-ते is conventionally invariant:

नेहा उपन्यास पढ़ते-पढ़ते सो गई।

nehā upanyās paṛhte-paṛhte so gaī.

Neha fell asleep while reading the novel.

Hindi also permits agreeing reduplicated depictives, especially with posture or a maintained state:

नेहा खिड़की के पास बैठी-बैठी सो गई।

nehā khiṛkī ke pās baiṭhī-baiṭhī so gaī.

Neha fell asleep while remaining seated by the window.

Feminine बैठी-बैठी depicts Neha's continuing posture. It is grammatical and should not be “corrected” to बैठते-बैठते, which would more readily evoke the process of repeatedly or gradually sitting. Form and viewpoint interact.

Older poetry and proverbs may show shortened करत-करत rather than modern करते-करते. That form is (literary/archaic or dialect-colored), not the neutral contemporary paradigm for new prose.

Contrast with -ते हुए and -कर

चलते हुए उसने रास्ते का नक्शा देखा।

calte hue usne rāste kā nakśā dekhā.

While walking, he or she looked at the route map.

चलते-चलते उसे सही रास्ता याद आ गया।

calte-calte use sahī rāstā yād ā gayā.

As he or she kept walking, the correct route came back to mind.

पैदल चलकर वह पुराने क़िले तक पहुँचा।

paidal calkar vah purāne qile tak pahũcā.

He reached the old fort on foot.

चलते हुए supplies simple overlap. चलते-चलते traces an extended process with an emerging result. चलकर packages walking as the means or path culminating in arrival.

A compressed written sentence and its expansion

कई वर्षों तक आँकड़े जुटाते-जुटाते शोधकर्ताओं ने मौसम का एक नया पैटर्न पहचाना।

kaī varṣoṃ tak ā̃kṛe juṭāte-juṭāte śodhkartāoṃ ne mausam kā ek nayā paiṭarn pahcānā.

Over years of gathering data, the researchers identified a new weather pattern. (academic)

Expanded:

शोधकर्ता कई वर्षों तक आँकड़े जुटाते रहे। इस लंबी प्रक्रिया के दौरान उन्होंने मौसम का एक नया पैटर्न पहचाना।

śodhkartā kaī varṣoṃ tak ā̃kṛe juṭāte rahe. is lambī prakriyā ke daurān unhoṃne mausam kā ek nayā paiṭarn pahcānā.

The researchers continued gathering data for many years. During this long process, they identified a new weather pattern. (academic)

The compressed version makes sustained data collection the developmental path toward discovery. The expansion independently asserts the duration and then locates the finding within it.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting the reduplication while intending accumulation

❌ अभ्यास करते उसकी रफ़्तार बढ़ गई।

Incorrect for the intended gradual-process construction — repeat the -ते form.

✅ अभ्यास करते-करते उसकी टाइप करने की रफ़्तार बढ़ गई।

abhyās karte-karte uskī ṭāip karne kī raftār baṛh gaī.

With continued practice, their typing speed increased.

2. Assuming the activity was completed

❌ किताब पढ़ते-पढ़ते वह सो गया, इसलिए उसने किताब पूरी कर ली।

Invalid inference — पढ़ते-पढ़ते only presents the ongoing process; falling asleep may interrupt it.

✅ किताब पढ़ते-पढ़ते वह सो गया और किताब अधूरी रह गई।

kitāb paṛhte-paṛhte vah so gayā aur kitāb adhūrī rah gaī.

He fell asleep while reading, and the book remained unfinished.

3. Using -ते-ते for a clearly completed prerequisite

❌ रिपोर्ट लिखते-लिखते उसने संपादक को भेज दी।

Wrong for 'after finishing the report'—the reduplicated form leaves writing in progress.

✅ रिपोर्ट लिखकर उसने संपादक को भेज दी।

riporṭ likhkar usne sampādak ko bhej dī.

After writing the report, he or she sent it to the editor.

4. Compressing two independent human subjects

❌ बच्चे खेलते-खेलते माता-पिता खाना बना रहे थे।

Incorrect for two independent actors — खेलते-खेलते lacks a valid controller in this structure.

✅ जब बच्चे खेल रहे थे, तब माता-पिता खाना बना रहे थे।

jab bacce khel rahe the, tab mātā-pitā khānā banā rahe the.

While the children were playing, the parents were cooking.

Key Takeaways

  • Productive neutral V-ते-V-ते is an invariant adverbial that profiles duration, repetition, or approach to a boundary.
  • It often supplies an accumulative path toward fatigue, discovery, skill, or another emerging result, but it does not guarantee causation or completion.
  • A telic verb such as पहुँचना can mean “by the time one reaches,” not repeated arrival.
  • Ordinary agentive uses favor controller continuity; discourse-supported environmental results are a conventional extension, not permission for arbitrary subject changes.
  • Agreeing reduplicated depictives such as बैठी-बैठी are grammatical and differ in viewpoint from neutral process बैठते-बैठते.
