Progressive participial phrases

A Hindi progressive predicate can be placed before a noun without its finite auxiliary: बाहर इंतज़ार कर रही महिला “the woman waiting outside,” तेज़ी से बढ़ रहे खर्चे “rapidly rising costs.” The sequence verb stem + रहा/रही/रहे locates the modified noun inside an event already in progress at the relevant time.

The finite system from which this modifier is built is explained under progressive aspect and ongoing events.

This construction is especially common in news, reports, explanations, and precise scene descriptions. Everyday Hindi often uses -ता हुआ or a relative clause instead, but the progressive modifier is useful when ongoingness—not habit, role, or completed result—is the crucial identifying information.

Remove the finite auxiliary, keep progressive agreement

Compare a full finite clause and a noun-modifying phrase:

एक महिला बाहर इंतज़ार कर रही है।

ek mahilā bāhar intazār kar rahī hai.

A woman is waiting outside.

बाहर इंतज़ार कर रही महिला आपसे मिलना चाहती है।

bāhar intazār kar rahī mahilā āpse milnā cāhtī hai.

The woman waiting outside wants to meet you. (respectful referent)

The first has finite auxiliary है and asserts the waiting. In the second, इंतज़ार कर रही modifies महिला; matrix चाहती है makes the main assertion. Omitting है does not create an incomplete sentence because the progressive belongs inside the noun phrase.

Head nounDirect modifierOblique modifier
masculine singularकाम कर रहा कर्मचारीकाम कर रहे कर्मचारी को
masculine pluralकाम कर रहे कर्मचारीकाम कर रहे कर्मचारियों को
feminine singularकाम कर रही कर्मचारीकाम कर रही कर्मचारी को
feminine pluralकाम कर रही कर्मचारीकाम कर रही कर्मचारियों को

Masculine singular रहा becomes oblique रहे before a postposition. Feminine रही stays the same across number and case. These are adjective-like forms controlled by the head noun.

💡
Do not leave है/था inside an attributive progressive. Use जो कर्मचारी काम कर रहा है as a full relative clause, or काम कर रहा कर्मचारी as a compact modifier—not a hybrid of both.

Progressive versus habitual attribution

English working, moving, and rising can translate two distinct Hindi viewpoints.

रात की पाली में काम करने वाला कर्मचारी अभी घर पर है।

rāt kī pālī meṃ kām karne vālā karmacārī abhī ghar par hai.

The employee who works the night shift is at home now.

रात की पाली में काम कर रहा कर्मचारी फ़ोन नहीं उठा सकता।

rāt kī pālī meṃ kām kar rahā karmacārī fon nahīṃ uṭhā saktā.

The employee currently working the night shift cannot answer the phone.

करने वाला classifies the employee by role or regular assignment. कर रहा selects someone engaged in the activity at the reference time. A bare habitual participle may also work in established descriptions, but रहा makes the ongoing interval explicit.

चलती बस का दरवाज़ा खोलने की कोशिश मत कीजिए।

caltī bas kā darvāzā kholne kī kośiś mat kījie.

Do not try to open the door of a moving bus. (respectful)

प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर आ रही ट्रेन हमारी है।

pleṭform par ā rahī ṭren hamārī hai.

The train coming into the platform is ours.

चलती बस is a conventional classifying/scene description. आ रही ट्रेन focuses on a particular train's current approach. The distinction is aspectual, not simply formal length.

The head noun supplies the progressive subject

The modified noun is interpreted as the subject of रहा. Its objects and complements appear before the progressive sequence.

पुराने रिकॉर्ड जाँच रहा अधिकारी शाम तक जवाब देगा।

purāne rikorḍ jā̃c rahā adhikārī śām tak javāb degā.

The officer checking the old records will reply by evening.

पुराने रिकॉर्ड जाँच रही अधिकारी ने हमें अंदर बुलाया।

purāne rikorḍ jā̃c rahī adhikārī ne hameṃ andar bulāyā.

The female officer checking the old records called us inside.

The English loan अधिकारी can refer to any gender; Hindi रहा/रही reveals the intended referent. The embedded object रिकॉर्ड never controls the progressive.

The head may also differ from the matrix subject:

मैंने दरवाज़े पर खड़े होकर बहस कर रहे दो लोगों को शांत कराया।

maĩne darvāze par khaṛe hokar bahas kar rahe do logoṃ ko śānt karāyā.

I calmed the two people arguing while standing at the door.

Matrix agent मैंने calms; oblique plural दो लोगों को controls कर रहे. The phrase is dense, so a relative clause may be preferable if more participants are added.

Time is relative to the matrix scene

Progressive modifiers have aspect but no independent tense. Their event overlaps the relevant reference time supplied by the matrix and surrounding adverbials.

कल पुस्तकालय में पढ़ रहा छात्र अचानक बेहोश हो गया।

kal pustakālay meṃ paṛh rahā chātr acānak behoś ho gayā.

Yesterday, the student studying in the library suddenly fainted.

अभी मरम्मत से गुज़र रहा पुल अगले महीने खुलेगा।

abhī marammat se guzar rahā pul agle mahīne khulegā.

The bridge currently undergoing repairs will open next month.

The first progressive overlaps a past fainting event; the second overlaps the present and serves as background to a future opening. रहा does not itself mean present tense.

💡
Progressive रहा supplies internal viewpoint, not tense. Date the scene with the matrix verb and adverbials, then let the modifier identify which participant is inside the unfolding event.

Negation fits before the progressive complex:

मास्क नहीं पहन रहे यात्रियों को प्रवेश नहीं मिला।

māsk nahīṃ pahan rahe yātriyoṃ ko praveś nahīṃ milā.

Passengers who were not wearing masks were not allowed entry.

The modifier says which passengers; matrix नहीं मिला reports the denied result. Both negative scopes remain separate.

Which predicates resist progressive modification?

Dynamic activities, processes, and gradual changes are natural: बन रहा घर, पड़ रही बारिश, बदल रही नीति, हो रही चर्चा. Stable states generally resist रहा unless context coerces a temporary, developing, or actively maintained reading.

शहर में हो रहे बदलावों पर आज चर्चा होगी।

śahar meṃ ho rahe badlāvoṃ par āj carcā hogī.

The changes taking place in the city will be discussed today.

विषय को अच्छी तरह जानने वाला विशेषज्ञ बैठक में मौजूद है।

viṣay ko acchī tarah jānne vālā viśeṣagya baiṭhak meṃ maujūd hai.

An expert who knows the subject well is present at the meeting.

For stable “know,” जानने वाला विशेषज्ञ is natural classification. जान रहा विशेषज्ञ would require a special “coming to know/actively finding out” context and is not the neutral equivalent of English “an expert knowing the topic.”

Progressive modifier versus -ते हुए phrase

An attributive progressive anchors the ongoing event to its head noun:

सड़क पार कर रहा आदमी रुक गया।

saṛak pār kar rahā ādmī ruk gayā.

The man crossing the road stopped.

An adverbial -ते हुए phrase instead presents a simultaneous activity of the matrix subject:

आदमी सड़क पार करते हुए अचानक रुक गया।

ādmī saṛak pār karte hue acānak ruk gayā.

While crossing the road, the man suddenly stopped.

The real-world scene is close, but information structure differs. The first identifies which man through an attributive modifier. The second frames the crossing as the circumstance of his stopping. In many contexts both are possible, but they are not interchangeable “gerunds.”

A -कर converb usually presents a prior or tightly linked action rather than an open interval:

आदमी सड़क पार करके बस-स्टॉप पर रुका।

ādmī saṛak pār karke bas-sṭop par rukā.

After crossing the road, the man stopped at the bus stop.

Progressive कर रहा keeps the crossing open; पार करके normally presents it as completed before the stop.

A compressed written-style sentence

लगातार बढ़ रही महँगाई निम्न-आय परिवारों की बचत घटा रही है।

lagātār baṛh rahī mahaṅgāī nimn-āy parivāroṃ kī bacat ghaṭā rahī hai.

Continuously rising inflation is reducing the savings of low-income families. (formal)

Expanded into clauses:

महँगाई लगातार बढ़ रही है, इसलिए निम्न-आय परिवारों की बचत घट रही है।

mahaṅgāī lagātār baṛh rahī hai, islie nimn-āy parivāroṃ kī bacat ghaṭ rahī hai.

Inflation is continuously rising, so the savings of low-income families are decreasing.

The compressed form backgrounds the first proposition and makes inflation the matrix causer. The expanded version asserts two finite developments and explicitly states the causal link.

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping the finite auxiliary inside the modifier

❌ बाहर इंतज़ार कर रही है महिला मेरी सहकर्मी है।

Incorrect hybrid — either use a finite relative clause or remove है from the modifier.

✅ बाहर इंतज़ार कर रही महिला मेरी सहकर्मी है।

bāhar intazār kar rahī mahilā merī sahkarmī hai.

The woman waiting outside is my colleague.

2. Forgetting oblique agreement

❌ मैंने काम कर रहा कर्मचारी को बुलाया।

Incorrect — कर्मचारी को requires masculine oblique रहे.

✅ मैंने मशीन पर काम कर रहे कर्मचारी को बुलाया।

maĩne maśīn par kām kar rahe karmacārī ko bulāyā.

I called the employee working on the machine.

3. Making रहा agree with the embedded object

❌ कविता पढ़ रही लड़का मेरा भाई है।

Incorrect — masculine लड़का, not feminine कविता, controls रहा.

✅ कविता पढ़ रहा लड़का मेरा भाई है।

kavitā paṛh rahā laṛkā merā bhāī hai.

The boy reading the poem is my brother.

4. Forcing progressive morphology onto a stable property

❌ हिंदी जान रहा शिक्षक हमारी मदद करेगा।

Unnatural for stable knowledge — रहा suggests an unfolding process.

✅ हिंदी जानने वाला शिक्षक हमारी मदद करेगा।

hindī jānne vālā śikṣak hamārī madad karegā.

The teacher who knows Hindi will help us.

5. Confusing ongoing overlap with completed sequence

❌ सड़क पार कर रहा वह दुकान में गया।

Wrong for ‘after crossing’—progressive रहा leaves the crossing open.

✅ सड़क पार करके वह सामने वाली दुकान में गया।

saṛak pār karke vah sāmne vālī dukān meṃ gayā.

After crossing the road, he went into the shop opposite.

Key Takeaways

  • Attributive progressives use verb stem + रहा/रही/रहे without a finite auxiliary.
  • The modified noun supplies the progressive subject and controls gender, number, and masculine oblique agreement.
  • Ongoingness is relative to the matrix reference time, not automatically present.
  • रहा is best with dynamic or developing situations; stable classifications often prefer वाला or a relative clause.
  • Progressive modifiers identify a noun inside an open event, while -ते हुए frames simultaneity and -करके commonly packages prior completion.
