Perfective participles attributively

Hindi perfective participles can modify nouns: टूटा कप “a broken cup,” कल आया संदेश “the message that arrived yesterday,” मेरे लिखे पत्र “the letters written by me.” They package a completed event or its resulting state inside a noun phrase, leaving the matrix clause free to make the main assertion.

For a compact comparison with adjective behavior, see participles used as adjectives.

The form is not simply an English “past participle.” With an intransitive verb, the modified noun is commonly the participant that moved, arrived, fell, or slept. With a transitive verb, it is commonly the affected object. Agreement follows that modified noun, while an agent—if expressed—uses a separate possessive or formal agent phrase.

Form and agreement

Regular perfective participles add -आ/-ए/-ई to the stem and behave like declinable adjectives. Feminine plural may show nasalization where the form is predicative or finite, while attributive feminine -ई before a noun normally remains visibly the same across number.

Head nounDirect phraseOblique phrase
masculine singularटूटा गिलासटूटे गिलास को
masculine pluralटूटे गिलासटूटे गिलासों को
feminine singularटूटी प्लेटटूटी प्लेट को
feminine pluralटूटी प्लेटेंटूटी प्लेटों को

टूटा गिलास सिंक के पास रख दो।

ṭūṭā gilās siṅk ke pās rakh do.

Put the broken glass near the sink. (informal)

टूटी प्लेटों को अलग डिब्बे में रखिए।

ṭūṭī pleṭoṃ ko alag ḍibbe meṃ rakhie.

Put the broken plates in a separate box. (respectful)

Masculine singular becomes oblique टूटे before को/के/से. Feminine टूटी does not change for case or number. The participle agrees inside the noun phrase independently of the matrix imperative.

Important irregulars include करना → किया, होना → हुआ, जाना → गया, देना → दिया, and लेना → लिया. Their agreeing forms are किया/किए/की, गया/गए/गई, and so on; learners cannot build करा or जाया by the regular rule.

💡
Store irregular participles as small adjective-like paradigms: किया–किए–की, गया–गए–गई, दिया–दिए–दी, लिया–लिए–ली. Their noun-phrase agreement is regular even when the stem formation is not.

Finite event versus non-finite modifier

नया पार्सल आज सुबह आया।

nayā pārsal āj subah āyā.

The new parcel arrived this morning.

आज सुबह आया पार्सल अभी मेज़ पर है।

āj subah āyā pārsal abhī mez par hai.

The parcel that arrived this morning is still on the table.

In the first sentence, आया is the matrix perfective predicate. In the second, आज सुबह आया modifies पार्सल; finite है locates the parcel now. The arrival is complete before the current state, but आया itself carries no independent tense in the noun phrase. A past, present, or future matrix can select a different reference point.

कल तक जमा किए आवेदन अगले सप्ताह जाँचे जाएँगे।

kal tak jamā kie āvedan agle saptāh jā̃ce jāẽge.

The applications submitted by tomorrow will be reviewed next week. (formal)

Here किए is perfective relative to the review: submission must be completed first, even though both events are future from the speaker's present.

Intransitive participles modify their actor or theme

With intransitive verbs, the head noun normally performs or undergoes the completed event.

देर से आए मेहमान पीछे बैठ गए।

der se āe mehmān pīche baiṭh gae.

The guests who arrived late sat at the back.

आँगन में गिरी पत्तियाँ अभी गीली हैं।

ā̃gan meṃ girī pattiyā̃ abhī gīlī haiṃ.

The leaves that fell in the courtyard are still wet.

मेहमान are both arrivers and matrix sitters—a same-subject context. In the next sentence, the matrix subject can differ:

माली ने आँगन में गिरी पत्तियाँ इकट्ठी कीं।

mālī ne ā̃gan meṃ girī pattiyā̃ ikaṭṭhī kīṃ.

The gardener gathered the leaves that had fallen in the courtyard.

The leaves control गिरी inside the modifier; माली ने is the matrix agent. This is not a dangling phrase because the modified noun explicitly supplies the participant of falling.

Some forms have conventional state readings: बैठा आदमी is “a seated man,” सोया बच्चा a child asleep, जगा बच्चा a child awake. The completed change is backgrounded and the resulting posture or condition is foregrounded.

Transitive participles usually modify the affected object

कल भेजी रिपोर्ट में दो आँकड़े ग़लत थे।

kal bhejī riporṭ meṃ do ā̃kṛe ġalat the.

Two figures in the report sent yesterday were wrong.

बाज़ार से खरीदे आम बहुत मीठे निकले।

bāzār se kharīde ām bahut mīṭhe nikle.

The mangoes bought at the market turned out to be very sweet.

Feminine रिपोर्ट controls भेजी; masculine plural आम controls खरीदे. The participle has a passive-like orientation in English translation, but Hindi has not necessarily built a full passive with जाना.

An agent may appear as a possessive-like phrase or, in formal prose, with द्वारा:

यह मेरी दादी की लिखी चिट्ठी है।

yah merī dādī kī likhī ciṭṭhī hai.

This is a letter written by my grandmother.

समिति द्वारा तैयार की गई रिपोर्ट सार्वजनिक है।

samiti dvārā taiyār kī gaī riporṭ sārvajanik hai.

The report prepared by the committee is public. (formal)

दादी की agrees possessively with feminine चिट्ठी; it is not दादी ने inside the noun phrase. The expanded passive तैयार की गई explicitly presents a completed preparation event and is common in administrative writing.

💡
With a transitive perfective modifier, first look for the affected head noun: लिखी चिट्ठी, खरीदे आम. To name the doer, use a natural genitive phrase or formal द्वारा, not an isolated ने inside the modifier.

Perfective versus habitual viewpoint

सड़क किनारे रुकती बस में बहुत भीड़ रहती है।

saṛak kināre ruktī bas meṃ bahut bhīṛ rahtī hai.

The bus that stops by the roadside is usually very crowded.

सड़क किनारे रुकी बस का इंजन बंद था।

saṛak kināre rukī bas kā iñjan band thā.

The bus stopped by the roadside had its engine off.

रुकती classifies the bus by a regular stop or views stopping from within. रुकी presents a reached state: it had stopped. English stopping/stopped suggests the contrast, but Hindi agreement and context determine the exact reading.

Perfective does not always mean a lasting physical result. कल हुई बैठक is “the meeting that took place yesterday”; the meeting no longer exists as an object. The participle simply establishes a completed identifying event.

A compressed written-style sentence

हाल में प्रकाशित रिपोर्ट ग्रामीण विद्यालयों में घटी उपस्थिति की ओर ध्यान खींचती है।

hāl meṃ prakāśit riporṭ grāmīṇ vidyālayoṃ meṃ ghaṭī upasthiti kī or dhyān khīñctī hai.

The recently published report draws attention to declining attendance in rural schools. (formal)

Expanded into finite clauses:

रिपोर्ट हाल में प्रकाशित हुई है। उसमें बताया गया है कि ग्रामीण विद्यालयों में उपस्थिति घटी है।

riporṭ hāl meṃ prakāśit huī hai. usmeṃ batāyā gayā hai ki grāmīṇ vidyālayoṃ meṃ upasthiti ghaṭī hai.

The report was published recently. It states that attendance in rural schools has declined.

The compressed version turns two completed propositions into modifiers and foregrounds what the report does. The expanded version is longer but clearer when the reader must process several agents or time relations.

Perfective modifier versus -कर sequence

An attributive perfective identifies a noun through a completed event. A -कर/-करके converb links an earlier event to the matrix event and normally shares its subject.

दरवाज़े पर लगाया ताला नया है।

darvāze par lagāyā tālā nayā hai.

The lock installed on the door is new.

ताला लगाकर चाबी अपने पास रखिए।

tālā lagākar cābī apne pās rakhie.

Lock it and keep the key with you. (respectful)

The first modifies ताला; the second instructs the same addressee to perform two linked actions. English may use “installed” and “after installing,” but Hindi keeps agreement and control structurally distinct.

Common Mistakes

1. Using a regular form for an irregular participle

❌ कल जाया यात्री आज लौट आया।

Incorrect — जाना has irregular perfective गया.

✅ कल गया यात्री आज लौट आया।

kal gayā yātrī āj lauṭ āyā.

The traveler who left yesterday returned today.

2. Forgetting agreement with the head noun

❌ मेज़ पर रखा किताब मेरी है।

Incorrect — feminine किताब requires रखी.

✅ मेज़ पर रखी किताब मेरी है।

mez par rakhī kitāb merī hai.

The book lying on the table is mine.

3. Using ने as an internal attributive agent

❌ रीना ने लिखी कविता प्रसिद्ध हुई।

Wrong for ‘the poem written by Reena’—the intended internal agent needs a genitive or द्वारा phrase.

✅ रीना की लिखी कविता पुरस्कार के लिए चुनी गई।

rīnā kī likhī kavitā puraskār ke lie cunī gaī.

The poem written by Reena was selected for an award.

4. Confusing a result modifier with a same-subject converb

❌ आवेदन भरा दफ़्तर भेजिए।

Incorrect for ‘after filling in the application’—the first action requires a converb.

✅ आवेदन भरकर दफ़्तर भेजिए।

āvedan bharkar daftar bhejie.

Fill in the application and send it to the office. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

  • Perfective participles identify nouns through completed events or attained states and agree like declinable adjectives.
  • Intransitive participles commonly modify their actor/theme; transitive participles commonly modify the affected object.
  • Their completion is relative to the matrix reference point, not automatically past time.
  • An internal transitive agent uses a genitive-like phrase or formal द्वारा, not free-standing ने.
  • Attributive perfectives modify nouns; -कर/-करके links events under a shared controller.
