Participles used as adjectives

Participles are verb-based forms that can modify nouns like adjectives. Hindi uses habitual or imperfective forms (हँसता बच्चा “a child who laughs” or, in context, “a laughing child”), perfective/result forms (टूटा कप “a broken cup”), and expanded हुआ phrases (खुली हुई खिड़की “an open window”). They preserve verbal meaning but show adjectival agreement.

The agreement pattern

Perfective टूटा illustrates the familiar four-way contrast.

FeaturesPhrase
masculine singular directटूटा कप
masculine plural directटूटे कप
masculine singular obliqueटूटे कप को
masculine plural obliqueटूटे कपों को
feminine, all casesटूटी प्लेट / टूटी प्लेटों को

टूटा कप मत इस्तेमाल कीजिए।

ṭūṭā kap mat istemāl kījie.

Please do not use the broken cup.

टूटी प्लेटों को अलग रख दीजिए।

ṭūṭī pleṭoṃ ko alag rakh dījie.

Please set the broken plates aside.

💡
A participle has two layers at once: its verb supplies event or state meaning, while the modified noun supplies gender, number, and case.

Habitual participles

The habitual or imperfective participle in -ता/-ते/-ती can describe a characteristic or repeated activity, classify a referent, or depict an action as unfolding.

चलती ट्रेन से उतरने की कोशिश मत कीजिए।

caltī ṭren se utarne kī kośiś mat kījie.

Please do not try to get off a moving train.

हँसती बच्ची ने सबका ध्यान खींच लिया।

hãstī baccī ne sabkā dhyān khīñc liyā.

The laughing child caught everyone's attention.

A bare habitual participle can be generic or characteristic, but context can also give it an unfolding-event reading. -ता हुआ often makes that ongoing reading clearer: हँसती हुई बच्ची “the girl who is laughing.”

Perfective and result-state participles

Perfective participles present an event as completed and often describe its visible result.

मेज़ पर रखा लिफ़ाफ़ा आपके लिए है।

mez par rakhā lifāfā āpke lie hai.

The envelope placed on the table is for you. (respectful)

कल भेजी गई फ़ाइल अभी तक नहीं खुली।

kal bhejī gaī fāil abhī tak nahīṃ khulī.

The file sent yesterday still has not opened.

रखा agrees with masculine लिफ़ाफ़ा; passive-like भेजी गई agrees throughout with feminine फ़ाइल. The agent need not be expressed.

An adjectival participle packages information more compactly than a finite relative clause. जो फ़ाइल कल भेजी गई थी “the file that was sent yesterday” explicitly builds a clause; कल भेजी गई फ़ाइल folds the same event into the noun phrase. The participial version is common in everyday instructions and especially useful in formal and written prose, but it need not sound bureaucratic.

जो दवा डॉक्टर ने लिखी थी, वह यहाँ नहीं मिल रही।

jo davā ḍokṭar ne likhī thī, vah yahā̃ nahīṃ mil rahī.

The medicine that the doctor prescribed is not available here.

डॉक्टर की लिखी हुई दवा यहाँ नहीं मिल रही।

ḍokṭar kī likhī huī davā yahā̃ nahīṃ mil rahī.

The medicine prescribed by the doctor is not available here.

Some participles lexicalize into ordinary adjectives. खुला can mean “open,” बंद is invariant “closed,” and पढ़ा-लिखा conventionally means educated. Lexical meaning does not cancel normal morphology.

वह पढ़ी-लिखी और आत्मनिर्भर महिला है।

vah paṛhī-likhī aur ātmanirbhar mahilā hai.

She is an educated and self-reliant woman.

Participles with हुआ

हुआ/हुए/हुई makes the participial status explicit and carries agreement.

खिड़की के पास बैठा हुआ आदमी मेरा पड़ोसी है।

khiṛkī ke pās baiṭhā huā ādmī merā paṛosī hai.

The man sitting by the window is my neighbor.

दरवाज़े के बाहर खड़ी हुई गाड़ियाँ हटवा दी गईं।

darvāze ke bāhar khaṛī huī gāṛiyā̃ haṭvā dī gaīṃ.

The vehicles parked outside the door were removed.

Both the lexical participle and हुआ agree: बैठा हुआ, खड़ी हुई. Indeclinable material inside a participial phrase remains fixed.

💡
Do not treat huā as an invariant particle. In an adjectival participial phrase it belongs to the agreement chain: huā, hue, huī.

Attributive and predicative uses

Participles can precede a noun or serve as a result-state predicate.

मुख्य दरवाज़ा अभी खुला है, लेकिन पीछे वाला बंद है।

mukhya darvāzā abhī khulā hai, lekin pīche vālā band hai.

The main door is open, but the back one is closed.

Degree is limited by meaning. बहुत थका हुआ “very tired” is natural because tiredness is gradable; बहुत लिखा हुआ पत्र is not a normal way to intensify “written.” Event participles take aspectual modifiers, while lexicalized state adjectives can take degree.

Time and manner expressions can remain inside the modifier: कल जल्दी भेजी गई फ़ाइल “the file sent early yesterday.” They modify the embedded event, while adjective agreement still comes from फ़ाइल. English speakers should therefore avoid reading every pre-nominal word as a separate adjective.

For the internal agreement of longer phrases, continue with agreement inside participial modifiers.

Direct and oblique

खुले दरवाज़े के पास मत खड़े रहिए।

khule darvāze ke pās mat khaṛe rahie.

Please do not keep standing near the open door.

Masculine singular खुला दरवाज़ा becomes oblique खुले दरवाज़े के पास. Feminine खुली खिड़की remains खुली खिड़की के पास.

Agreement in a ने-clause

नीलम ने अपनी लिखी हुई चिट्ठियाँ दोबारा पढ़ीं।

nīlam ne apnī likhī huī ciṭṭhiyā̃ dobārā paṛhīṃ.

Neelam reread the letters she had written.

अपनी refers back to Neelam, while लिखी हुई and पढ़ीं follow unmarked feminine plural चिट्ठियाँ; the ने-marked agent does not control their agreement.

Common Mistakes

❌ टूटा प्लेट फेंक दो।

Incorrect—feminine प्लेट requires टूटी.

✅ टूटी प्लेट फेंक दो।

ṭūṭī pleṭ pheṅk do.

Throw away the broken plate. (informal)

❌ खड़ी हुआ गाड़ी मेरी है।

Incorrect—both participial elements must agree with feminine गाड़ी.

✅ खड़ी हुई गाड़ी मेरी है।

khaṛī huī gāṛī merī hai.

The parked car is mine.

❌ खुले दरवाज़ा बंद करिए।

Incorrect—direct masculine singular दरवाज़ा requires खुला.

✅ खुला दरवाज़ा बंद करिए।

khulā darvāzā band karie.

Please close the open door.

❌ सीमा ने लिखा हुई चिट्ठी पढ़ी।

Incorrect—the participial phrase agrees with feminine चिट्ठी, not the agent.

✅ सीमा ने लिखी हुई चिट्ठी पढ़ी।

sīmā ne likhī huī ciṭṭhī paṛhī.

Seema read the written letter.

Key Takeaways

  • Participles combine verbal event meaning with adjective-like agreement.
  • Habitual, perfective, and हुआ-expanded modifiers differ in aspect and discourse use.
  • Lexicalized result meanings can take degree; eventive participles generally require event-oriented modifiers.
  • Case and ने do not change the noun that controls the participial modifier.
