Agreement inside participial modifiers

Hindi participial modifiers behave much like adjective phrases: their visible endings normally agree with the noun they modify. Compare दौड़ता लड़का, दौड़ती लड़की, दौड़ते लड़के and लिखी हुई चिट्ठी, लिखे हुए पत्र. The challenge is not forming one ending but identifying the correct head noun through a longer sentence.

A second challenge is structural. An attributive or depictive participle agrees, while the common adverbial frame -ते हुए “while doing” is conventionally invariant. Thus both सीमा गाती हुई लौटी and सीमा गाते हुए लौटी are grammatical, but they package the scene differently.

Find the head noun first

The modified noun, not necessarily the matrix subject, controls agreement inside the participial phrase.

खिड़की पर बैठी चिड़िया को बच्चे चुपचाप देख रहे थे।

khiṛkī par baiṭhī ciṛiyā ko bacce cupcāp dekh rahe the.

The children were quietly watching the bird sitting on the window.

Feminine चिड़िया controls बैठी. Masculine plural बच्चे separately controls matrix देख रहे थे. The को marking on the bird does not erase agreement inside its own noun phrase.

दरवाज़े के पास खड़े आदमी ने हमें रास्ता बताया।

darvāze ke pās khaṛe ādmī ne hameṃ rāstā batāyā.

The man standing near the door showed us the way.

Masculine singular आदमी is oblique before ने, so the modifier appears as खड़े, not direct खड़ा. Matrix बताया follows its own perfective transitive agreement pattern.

💡
Draw a bracket around the noun phrase before checking the main clause: [खिड़की पर बैठी चिड़िया] को. Agreement inside the bracket belongs to चिड़िया; case and agreement outside it follow the matrix predicate.

The main agreement patterns

Participial typeMasculine singularFeminineMasculine plural/oblique

Feminine -ती/-ई/रही/हुई does not distinguish singular, plural, direct, and oblique in the same way; number and case remain visible on the noun and surrounding words.

मंच पर नाच रही लड़कियों को पुरस्कार मिला।

mañc par nāc rahī laṛkiyoṃ ko puraskār milā.

The girls dancing on the stage received a prize.

Feminine plural oblique लड़कियों को still takes नाच रही, not नाच रहे. Natural gender, number, and case must be read together rather than guessed from the nearest ending.

Finite predicate versus non-finite modifier

मेहमान बाहर इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।

mehmān bāhar intazār kar rahe haiṃ.

The guests are waiting outside.

बाहर इंतज़ार कर रहे मेहमानों को अंदर बुलाइए।

bāhar intazār kar rahe mehmānoṃ ko andar bulāie.

Please call the guests waiting outside in. (respectful)

In the first, कर रहे हैं is finite and asserts an ongoing event. In the second, कर रहे has no auxiliary and identifies which guests; respectful बुलाइए is the finite predicate. Masculine plural/oblique मेहमानों को controls रहे.

The modifier's time is relative to the matrix situation, not automatically present:

कल स्टेशन पर इंतज़ार कर रहे यात्री बस छूटने से नाराज़ थे।

kal sṭeśan par intazār kar rahe yātrī bas chūṭne se nārāz the.

The passengers who were waiting at the station yesterday were upset that the bus had left.

Past थे anchors the waiting in yesterday's scene. The non-finite modifier carries aspect but no independent tense.

Perfective modifiers: whose result is described?

With an intransitive verb, the modified noun is normally the participant that underwent the event:

देर से पहुँची ट्रेन आधे घंटे बाद रवाना हुई।

der se pahũcī ṭren ādhe ghaṇṭe bād ravānā huī.

The train that arrived late departed half an hour later.

With a transitive perfective modifier, the head is commonly the affected object, while an agent is expressed separately:

मेरी बहन की बनाई हुई मिठाई सबको पसंद आई।

merī bahan kī banāī huī miṭhāī sabko pasand āī.

Everyone liked the sweets made by my sister.

Feminine मिठाई controls बनाई हुई. मेरी बहन की expresses the maker; it does not make बनाई agree with बहन. Hindi does not insert an ergative ने phrase directly inside this modifier.

तकनीशियन द्वारा जाँचे गए उपकरण दोबारा पैक किए गए।

taknīśiyan dvārā jā̃ce gae upkaraṇ dobārā paik kie gae.

The devices checked by the technician were packed again. (formal)

Masculine plural उपकरण controls modifier जाँचे गए and, independently, passive predicate पैक किए गए.

Attributive, depictive, and adverbial structures

An agreeing phrase before a noun is straightforwardly attributive:

मुस्कुराती हुई बच्ची ने कैमरे की ओर देखा।

muskurātī huī baccī ne kaimre kī or dekhā.

The smiling girl looked toward the camera.

An agreeing phrase can also follow its subject and depict a temporary state during the matrix event:

सीमा गाती हुई घर लौटी।

sīmā gātī huī ghar lauṭī.

Seema returned home, singing.

The agreeing depictive गाती हुई presents Seema as a singing participant. The conventional adverbial alternative is invariant -ते हुए:

सीमा गाते हुए घर लौटी।

sīmā gāte hue ghar lauṭī.

Seema returned home while singing.

The event scene is similar, but गाते हुए more directly describes the manner or simultaneous circumstance of returning. It does not switch to feminine गाती हुई. The contrast is clearest with feminine subjects; with masculine plural लड़के गाते हुए लौटे, agreeing and invariant forms happen to look alike.

This distinction extends the analysis on participles with हुआ: agreement is evidence for a noun-oriented modifier or depictive, while invariant -ते हुए is an adverbial clause-linking frame.

💡
Do not “correct” every feminine subject to -ती हुई. Ask whether the phrase depicts the participant (सीमा गाती हुई लौटी) or adverbially frames the action (सीमा गाते हुए लौटी). Both are Standard Hindi.

Subject control in the adverbial frame

Invariant -ते हुए normally shares the matrix subject:

फ़ाइल पढ़ते हुए मैंने तीन गलतियाँ नोट कीं।

fāil paṛhte hue maĩne tīn galtiyā̃ noṭ kīṃ.

While reading the file, I noted three errors.

The reader and noter are both मैं. If the simultaneous event belongs to someone else, use a finite clause or another explicit structure:

जब रिया फ़ाइल पढ़ रही थी, तब मैंने तीन गलतियाँ नोट कीं।

jab riyā fāil paṛh rahī thī, tab maĩne tīn galtiyā̃ noṭ kīṃ.

While Riya was reading the file, I noted three errors.

This prevents a dangling controller. An attributive modifier, by contrast, gets its subject locally from its head noun even when the matrix subject differs.

Participle versus converb

-ता हुआ/-ते हुए presents overlap or an open scene. -कर/-करके packages an event as prior, enabling, or manner-related to the following event.

वह दौड़ते हुए स्टेशन पहुँचा।

vah dauṛte hue sṭeśan pahũcā.

He reached the station while running.

वह दौड़कर स्टेशन पहुँचा।

vah dauṛkar sṭeśan pahũcā.

He ran to the station and reached it.

The first views running from within as simultaneous manner. The second packages running as the means/path culminating in arrival; it need not mean that one fully separate run ended before another unrelated arrival began. Hindi converbs organize event structure, not a rigid English “having done” category.

A compressed written modifier and its expansion

पिछले वर्ष स्वीकृत हुई परियोजनाओं की संशोधित सूची वेबसाइट पर उपलब्ध है।

pichle varṣ svīkrit huī pariyojnāoṃ kī saṃśodhit sūcī vebsāiṭ par uplabdh hai.

The revised list of projects approved last year is available on the website. (formal)

Feminine plural oblique परियोजनाओं की controls स्वीकृत हुई; invariant learned adjective स्वीकृत stays fixed, while हुई realizes agreement. Expanded:

परियोजनाएँ पिछले वर्ष स्वीकृत हुई थीं। उनकी संशोधित सूची वेबसाइट पर उपलब्ध है।

pariyojnāẽ pichle varṣ svīkrit huī thīṃ. unkī saṃśodhit sūcī vebsāiṭ par uplabdh hai.

The projects were approved last year. Their revised list is available on the website. (formal)

The expansion gives approval its own finite clause; the compressed version makes it background identification.

Common Mistakes

1. Agreeing with the matrix subject instead of the head noun

❌ पेड़ पर बैठा चिड़िया को बच्चों ने देखा।

Incorrect — feminine चिड़िया controls बैठी inside its noun phrase.

✅ पेड़ पर बैठी चिड़िया को बच्चों ने देखा।

peṛ par baiṭhī ciṛiyā ko baccoṃ ne dekhā.

The children saw the bird sitting in the tree.

2. Missing masculine oblique agreement

❌ काम कर रहा मज़दूर को पानी दीजिए।

Incorrect — मज़दूर को requires oblique रहे.

✅ धूप में काम कर रहे मज़दूर को पानी दीजिए।

dhūp meṃ kām kar rahe mazdūr ko pānī dījie.

Give water to the worker laboring in the sun. (respectful)

3. Freezing हुआ in an attributive phrase

❌ मेज़ पर रखी हुआ किताब मेरी है।

Incorrect — feminine किताब controls both रखी and हुई.

✅ मेज़ पर रखी हुई किताब मेरी है।

mez par rakhī huī kitāb merī hai.

The book lying on the table is mine.

4. Creating a hybrid adverbial

❌ नेहा मुस्कुराती हुए अंदर आई।

Incorrect hybrid — use agreeing मुस्कुराती हुई or invariant adverbial मुस्कुराते हुए.

✅ नेहा मुस्कुराते हुए अंदर आई।

nehā muskurāte hue andar āī.

Neha came in smiling.

5. Using a participle for a completed sequence

❌ पत्र लिखते हुए उसने लिफ़ाफ़ा बंद किया।

Wrong for 'after writing the letter'—this says the envelope was closed while writing was still in progress.

✅ पत्र लिखकर उसने लिफ़ाफ़ा बंद किया।

patra likhkar usne lifāfā band kiyā.

After writing the letter, he or she sealed the envelope.

Key Takeaways

  • Agreement inside an attributive modifier follows its head noun, including masculine oblique case.
  • Habitual, perfective, progressive, and expanded हुआ modifiers each carry their own agreement pattern.
  • An attributive modifier can have a different subject from the matrix clause because its head supplies the controller.
  • Agreeing depictives and invariant adverbial -ते हुए are both grammatical but package the participant and circumstance differently.
  • Participles present states or overlap; -कर/-करके packages an event as prior, enabling, or integrated manner.
