Hindi uses के अलावा ke alāvā to place one item beside the rest of a relevant set. Depending on what the clause says about that rest, it can mean either “besides/in addition to” or “apart from/except.” के सिवा ke sivā normally makes the exclusive relation explicit: the named item is removed from the set to which the statement applies.
The contrast is therefore not a choice between two physical meanings. Both expressions organize alternatives in a set. Polarity, quantifiers such as कोई and कुछ, and focus particles such as भी tell the listener whether other alternatives are included or excluded.
The two readings of के अलावा
In an additive clause, X के अलावा leaves X in the picture and adds another member. भी is a strong cue for this reading.
आरव के अलावा मीरा भी कार्यशाला में आ रही है।
ārav ke alāvā mīrā bhī kāryaśālā meṃ ā rahī hai.
Besides Aarav, Meera is also coming to the workshop.
In an exclusive clause, the remainder of the set is denied or ruled out. Negative नहीं, negative indefinites, and expressions such as और कोई make “except” natural.
आरव के अलावा कार्यशाला में और कोई नहीं आया।
ārav ke alāvā kāryaśālā meṃ aur koī nahīṃ āyā.
No one else came to the workshop except Aarav.
These sentences form a useful minimal pair. The postposition remains के अलावा; the clause after it determines whether Meera is added or everyone else is excluded.
| Frame | Typical reading | Set effect |
|---|---|---|
| X के अलावा Y भी... | besides X, Y too | X and Y are included |
| X के अलावा और... | in addition to X, another... | the set expands |
| X के अलावा कोई/कुछ नहीं... | no one/nothing except X | all alternatives other than X are excluded |
| X के अलावा कौन...? | who besides/other than X? | the question leaves both readings open to context |
के सिवा: normally exclusive
के सिवा presents the complement as the exception. It is common with कोई नहीं, कुछ नहीं, सब, and हर.
तुम्हारे सिवा यह पासवर्ड किसी को नहीं मालूम।
tumhāre sivā yah pāsvard kisī ko nahīṃ mālūm.
No one except you knows this password. (informal)
रसोई के सिवा घर के हर कमरे में धूप आती है।
rasoī ke sivā ghar ke har kamre meṃ dhūp ātī hai.
Sunlight enters every room in the house except the kitchen.
The second sentence is affirmative, but हर कमरे supplies the full comparison set and रसोई के सिवा removes one member. Negation is therefore helpful but not required for exclusion.
In contemporary Standard Hindi, अलावा is widespread in speech and writing. सिवा is also current but often feels more pointedly exclusive and slightly more elevated in careful prose. Neither is archaic, and सिवा is not restricted to literary language.
आपके सिवा इस फ़ाइल को कौन खोल सकता है?
āpke sivā is fāil ko kaun khol saktā hai?
Who other than you can open this file? (respectful)
Here the rhetorical context implies that probably nobody else can. With a genuine request for additional names, आपके अलावा और कौन... ? would more readily invite an additive list.
Complements are oblique
Both are compound postpositions built with के. A changing noun therefore appears in the oblique form, as described in compound postpositional phrases.
| Direct form | With अलावा | With सिवा |
|---|---|---|
| लड़का laṛkā | लड़के के अलावा laṛke ke alāvā | लड़के के सिवा laṛke ke sivā |
| बच्चे bacce | बच्चों के अलावा baccoṃ ke alāvā | बच्चों के सिवा baccoṃ ke sivā |
| यह प्रस्ताव yah prastāv | इस प्रस्ताव के अलावा is prastāv ke alāvā | इस प्रस्ताव के सिवा is prastāv ke sivā |
Pronouns use possessive-like forms before the expression: मेरे अलावा, हमारे अलावा, तुम्हारे सिवा, आपके सिवा, इसके अलावा, and उनके अलावा.
मेरे अलावा टीम के दो और सदस्य प्रस्तुति देंगे।
mere alāvā ṭīm ke do aur sadasya prastuti deṅge.
In addition to me, two more members of the team will give the presentation.
The quantified phrase दो और सदस्य makes the additive reading explicit. Compare the exclusive version:
मेरे सिवा टीम के किसी सदस्य को बैठक का समय नहीं बताया गया।
mere sivā ṭīm ke kisī sadasya ko baiṭhak kā samay nahīṃ batāyā gayā.
No member of the team except me was told the meeting time.
इसके अलावा as a discourse connector
इसके अलावा often links whole points rather than concrete objects. At the beginning of a sentence it commonly means “in addition/besides” in neutral and formal prose.
कमरे का किराया उचित है। इसके अलावा, बिजली का ख़र्च भी उसमें शामिल है।
kamre kā kirāyā ucit hai. iske alāvā, bijlī kā xarc bhī usmeṃ śāmil hai.
The room's rent is reasonable. In addition, the electricity cost is included.
With negation, the same phrase can become exclusive: इसके अलावा कोई विकल्प नहीं है “there is no option other than this.” Punctuation does not decide the meaning; the scope of भी, कोई, and नहीं does.
The additive use frequently pairs with focus particle भी. भी does not belong inside the postposition; it marks the newly added constituent or proposition.
Scope: what exactly is the exception?
The phrase must be interpreted against a particular predicate and comparison set. In रविवार के सिवा दुकान रोज़ खुलती है, the days of the week form the set and Sunday is excluded from “the shop opens.” In रविवार के अलावा सोमवार को भी दुकान बंद रहेगी, Sunday is already assumed to be a closing day and Monday is added.
रविवार के सिवा पुस्तकालय हर दिन खुला रहता है।
ravivār ke sivā pustakālay har din khulā rahtā hai.
The library is open every day except Sunday.
रविवार के अलावा सोमवार को भी पुस्तकालय बंद रहेगा।
ravivār ke alāvā somvār ko bhī pustakālay band rahegā.
Besides Sunday, the library will also be closed on Monday.
Quantifier placement matters as well. दो अध्यापकों के अलावा बारह छात्र आए adds twelve students to two teachers. दो अध्यापकों के सिवा बाकी सभी लोग आए excludes the teachers from the contextually relevant group of attendees. The nouns alone do not determine the relation; the predicate and quantifier define the larger set.
दो प्रशिक्षकों के अलावा बारह प्रतिभागियों ने अभ्यास पूरा किया।
do praśikṣakoṃ ke alāvā bārah pratibhāgiyoṃ ne abhyās pūrā kiyā.
In addition to two instructors, twelve participants completed the exercise.
दो अध्यापकों के सिवा बाकी सभी लोग आए।
do adhyāpakoṃ ke sivā bākī sabhī log āe.
Everyone else came except two teachers.
An initial exception phrase normally has scope over the following clause. If only one noun phrase is meant to contrast, put भी, ही, or और next to that focused constituent. This avoids the English learner's tendency to assume that except and besides possess a fixed meaning independently of clause scope.
A short dialogue: making the set explicit
— इन दो रिपोर्टों के अलावा और क्या भेजना है? — इनके अलावा बजट भी भेजना है; और कुछ नहीं।
— in do riporṭoṃ ke alāvā aur kyā bhejnā hai? — inke alāvā bajaṭ bhī bhejnā hai; aur kuch nahīṃ.
— Besides these two reports, what else needs to be sent? — In addition to them, the budget must also be sent; nothing else.
The first और क्या asks which further set members exist. The answer's भी adds the budget, and और कुछ नहीं closes the set. This is how conversation normally resolves the potential ambiguity: speakers provide cues rather than relying on अलावा alone.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English preposition-first order
❌ के अलावा राहुल दो सहकर्मी भी आए।
Incorrect — the complement must come before के अलावा.
✅ राहुल के अलावा दो सहकर्मी भी आए।
rāhul ke alāvā do sahkarmī bhī āe.
Besides Rahul, two coworkers also came.
2. Leaving a masculine -आ noun in the direct form
❌ उस लड़का के सिवा सब तैयार थे।
Incorrect — लड़का becomes oblique लड़के before the compound postposition.
✅ उस लड़के के सिवा सब तैयार थे।
us laṛke ke sivā sab taiyār the.
Everyone except that boy was ready.
3. Omitting के
❌ चाय अलावा ठंडे पेय भी मिलते हैं।
Incorrect in Standard Hindi — अलावा requires the compound form के अलावा.
✅ चाय के अलावा ठंडे पेय भी मिलते हैं।
cāy ke alāvā ṭhanḍe pey bhī milte haiṃ.
Besides tea, cold drinks are also available.
4. Assuming अलावा is always additive
❌ चाय के अलावा कुछ नहीं है।
Incorrect for the intended additive meaning — कुछ नहीं makes के अलावा exclusive: there is nothing except tea.
✅ चाय के अलावा कॉफ़ी भी है।
cāy ke alāvā kofī bhī hai.
Besides tea, there is coffee too.
Key Takeaways
- के अलावा can be additive or exclusive; the surrounding clause resolves the reading.
- के सिवा normally marks a clear exception, with or without overt negation.
- Both take oblique noun complements and possessive-like pronoun forms such as मेरे, इसके, and उनके.
- भी/और add alternatives; कोई नहीं/कुछ नहीं exclude them.
- These expressions structure a set of alternatives, not a spatial relation and not a mechanical one-to-one English translation.
